During Covid confinement, singer and harmonica player Ronnie Owens spent time listening to some of his band Li’l Ronnie & The Grand Dukes’ old live shows recordings. One of them belonged to a 2005 concert. It was very well recorded and had an excellent sound too. Now Ronnie has rescued it to the delight of blues lovers who look for the best music, because the album is really impressive. Eight fantastic songs have been selected from that concert, respecting the same order they were played live, plus three bonus tracks recorded on studio.

The band included Ronnie Owens on vocals and harmonica, Robert Frahm on guitar, John Fralin on piano and organ, Bryan Smith on bass and George Sheppard on drums, all of them great musicians and amazing blues masters, a language they perfectly know and totally control. It is a real pleasure to savor and enjoy these eleven juicy attractive dishes, full of a very special fragrance and quality, where the best blues prevail and shine at really high level. /Vicente P. One of the finest retro blues bands from the east coast. Produced by Anson Funderburgh they are delivering a nice set of eleven originals. Rooted in Chicago style blues and urban swing and r&b. Naturally enough, Ronnie Ownes and the band did not re-invent the blues. They album has class, though. It should be a treat for all lovers of the more traditional styles in blues.

Blues masters Terry Garland and Li'l Ronnie have been performing as a duo since December 31, 2009. Although they had performed together in the past, this time it really clicked. Their electrifying sound mesmerizes the listener. Both Terry & Ronnie have long distinguished recording careers, as they are both vocalists, songwriters and interpreters their repertoire is varied, exciting and spontaneous.

Terry Garland is known internationally as a master slide and acoustic guitarist. Terry performs world wide and has performed at top blues festivals across the globe. The artist's impassioned songs, rare musical insight and depth make him one of the most innovative and praised contemporary blues and roots musicians. Terry's meticulous finger-picking and driving percussive foot-stomping unite with his vocal prowess to create an evocative, engaging transformation.

Born in Johnson City, TN., Terry's musical roots were pioneered by forefathers of the blues. During his youth, he studied the sounds of Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed, Blind Willie McTell, Howling' Wolf and Lightning Hopkins, who inspired him to follow his calling. These pioneers played the blues on guitar or piano, they were the music. Just a voice and an instrument.

Harpist, singer/songwriter and Hohner Harmonica endorsee Ronnie Owens has been performing since the 60's and has been fronting his own bands for over 25 years. Ronnie and band have performed at top music festivals and venues including a headlining performance at the prestigious Lincoln Center. They have also played with and opened shows for some of the biggest names in the blues /rock world.

Terry and Ronnie recently recorded an electrifying live CD, 'Live at the Canal Club', with a planned release date of January, 2011. Terry and Ronnie are very excited about their new musical partnership.

[4:45] 12. That's What a Girl Wants to Hear
[1:53] 13. I Just Met a Man
[5:00] 14. I Had a Warden for a Woman

This aptly titled CD 'unfinished business' has been a long time in the making and I believe certainly worth the wait. The Blue Beats were a very popular band in the blues / roots scene during the 80's and early 90's. This is their 2nd CD that they started recording way back in 91'. This recording features the soulful gospel tinged vocals of Claudia Carawan. They had written all the songs and had already recorded 8. But you know, sometimes life just gets in the way and things just don't turn out as planned. Well here it is over 23 years later and they're finally getting it finished. The record is a great mix of American musical styles, 12 originals and two choice covers by Ray Charles and Louie Prima.

Li'l Ronnie & The Grand Dukes - Young And Evil

Bitrate: 320K/s
Time: 44:32
Size: 102.0 MB
Styles: Texas blues, Harmonica blues
Year: 2001
Art: Front

[4:18] 1. Leavin' Here Tonight
[4:21] 2. Mellow Chick
[4:57] 3. Young & Evil
[4:08] 4. Buck Naked
[2:34] 5. Rockin'

[3:54] 8. Let Me Down Easy
[5:13] 9. I've Been Your Good Thing
[4:17] 10. Doggin' Round
[3:19] 11. Chicken Shack Boogie

An accomplished and entertaining set of traditional electric blues, Li'l Ronnie and the Grand Dukes translate reverence into impassioned performance. Joined by guitarist Anson Funderburgh, Ronnie Owens deftly leads his band through a roll call of blues genre exercises, from the loosely rocking Texas blues of "Leavin' Here Tonight" to a jump blues cover of Amos Milburn's "Chicken Shack Boogie" and a slow burning rendition of George Smith's "Early One Monday Morning." Owens more than holds his own on the seven originals here, as well, with big swinging blues shouters, tight soul grooves, and jazzy instrumentals all sharing time. As Owens is a soulful vocalist and standout harpist, he does well to allow his backing band to share the spotlight in his powerhouse performances. Sure, it's all been done before, but this kind of enthusiasm and authenticity makes for an addition that should be welcome in any blues collection.

[3:24] 14. C'est La Vie

Recorded and written in the beginning of 2012, Gotta Strange Feeling showcases the superb songwriting of Owens and guitarist Ivan Appelrouth against a musical backdrop steeped in blues, swing and rock 'n' roll. For fans of Chess Records, Jimmy Reed, and Louisiana Swamp Blues, Li'l Ronnie & the Grand Dukes express a traditional blues feeling naturally. Gotta Strange Feeling, Sweet Sue, and Bring Your Love Home are jumpin' blues numbers that will certainly pack the dance floor! Cold Hard Cash is a swamp rocker straight out of the Little Feat book, while the 1950's blues of Chicago are recalled on Can't Please Your Wife, Fat City, and Late Nite Blues. A few choice covers like Chuck Berry's rocking C'est La Vie and the Louis Jordan classic, Buzz Me, round out the song selection. Slow deep-rooted tales and lively swingers. Based on the east coast, Owens leads this band with searing harp refrains and convincing vocals.

Ronnie Owens (vocals, harmonica); John Fralin (piano); John Sheppard (upright bass, electric bass); Mark Young (drums).
