The aptly titled fifth album from Ronnie Baker Brooks establishes his long family ties with the blues. He was born Rodney Dion Baker. His father, Lee Baker Jr, is the highly respected blues musician better known by his stage name, Lonnie Brooks. Lonnie kept the music and the blues life in front of him at an early age. In 1976, at age 9, he first appeared on stage to play guitar with his father. After graduating high school, he became a roadie for his father’s band. Koko Taylor advised him to “Learn from your daddy everything you can. And one day, it’ll be up to you to carry the blues forward. Ronnie took heart in this message and Lonnie eventually allowed him to join the band playing bass. As time passed and Ronnie’s proficiency with the guitar improved, Lonnie permitted Ronnie to move up to second guitar. Ronnie made his first recorded appearance on Lonnie’s 1988 album, Live from Chicago: Bayou Lightning Strikes.

His tours with Lonnie put him into contact with many of the blues greatest performers including B.B. King, Elvin Bishop and Junior Wells among others. Willie Dixon taught the importance of delivering a song and Albert Collins, whom Ronnie says was almost a second father to him provided the advice to “Take what you like from what we do and make it your own.

In 1998, with Lonnie’s blessing, Ronnie formed his own label, Watchdog Records releasing three albums starting with Gold Digger (1998), Take Me Witcha (2001), and The Torch (2006). In 2008, he played on Eddy Clearwater’s album, West Side Strut. He released his fourth album, Times Have Changed, on the Provogue label in 2017. Then the pandemic hit, and everything ground to a halt. As life returned to somewhat normal after that extended period, Ronnie started playing around again including some guest appearances with Shemekia Copeland.

All leading to this, his first album for Alligator Records. Ronnie is joined by Will McFarlane on rhythm guitar, Dave Smith on bass, Steve Potts on drums, Rick Steff on electric piano on ten tracks and Clayton Ivey on the Hammond B3 on four tracks. Brad Quinn on sax and Drew White on trumpet guest on tracks 5 & 8. All the tracks were written by Ronnie with exception of “All True Man”, which was co-written by “Big Head” Todd Mohr with him.

The album opens with a strong blues rocker, “I’m Feeling You” and he sings “something you got is the kind of loving I need”. “Lonnie Brooks’ Blessing” is a twelve second sound clip from Lonnie saying “it’s time I give you your first blues lesson, give you my blessing to keep these a blues alive” which immediately shifts into the title song with Ronnie telling his life story as he declares “I ain’t complaining, I’m just explaining, I got love in my blood, the blues in my DNA.”

He prays that “My Love Will Make You Do Right” in a smooth ballad. That is followed with another ballad mixed with Memphis soul, “Accept My Love” as he declares “I’m the one for you” and pleas for her to “Give me a chance to prove my love is true…and give our love one more try.” He declares that he is the “All True Man”, which moves back into a rock mode as he proclaims, “I will love you all morning, all day long…I don’t make promises, I make guarantees.”

He digs deep into the blues on “Robbing Peter to Pay Paul”. He states “that I got the blues so bad, don’t know what I’m going to do.” “My paycheck is coming in, but it is already spent”. He is seeking “Instant Gratification” in another rocking number as he declares “Life is too short, got to live for the day, been waiting too long just to have it my way.” He seeks a woman whom he tells “I Got to Make You Mine” and tells her “You are driving me wild”.

The eight-minute “Stuck on Stupid” is a new version of the song that was originally released on his debut album, Gold Digger. Pure Chicago blues emanates from the song as he cries “I give you all of my money, you go shopping downtown, you come back early the next morning, going to put me down.” “I Found a Dollar Looking for a Dime” keeps his blues groove going as he meets a woman “who was so fine…not easily impressed by every man she meets”. On “My Boo”, he says “I have never met someone that makes me feel like you”.

After the long drought from the recording scene, Ronnie’s welcome return certainly quickly re-establishes him at the top of today’s blues echelon. His voice has not lost any of the soul that he demonstrated with those earlier recordings. He states “I’ll always carry on and represent the blues in everything I do. Dad started the fire, Albert poured the gas on it, and Koko put the grill on”. ~John Sacksteder

Provogue is home to some of the worlds’ finest modern Blues artists and the Label are thrilled to announce their first Rockin’ The Blues 2018 Tour featuring the exceptional talents of Eric Gales, Quinn Sullivan, Gary Hoey and now added to the bill as a special end of show guest is Texan guitar slinger Lance Lopez guitar hero extravaganza. The tour will be calling through Germany, The Netherlands and the UK in March next year.

To celebrate this, Rockin’ The Blues, the album features 14 stellar performances from Eric Gales, Quinn Sullivan, Gary Hoey, Black Stone Cherry, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Beth Hart, Walter Trout, SIMO, Supersonic Blues Machine, Thomas Wynn & The Believers, Jonny Lang, Lance Lopez, Sonny Landreth and Ronnie Baker Brooks.
Guitar whirlwind Eric Gales’ Been So Long is taken from his critically acclaimed new album Middle of the Road which was released early 2017, Eric Gales is a man on form and on fire right now. His fourth album on Provogue/Mascot Label Group (15th album in total) sees him at his most expressive yet, his rebirth in fact; it is a deeply personal and reflective record that echoes where he is in his life right now and he allows himself to open up and really flourish. The who’s who of guitarists are declaring their admiration for him; Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction) exclaimed that “How Eric Gales isn’t the hugest name in rock guitar is a total mystery”, modern blues icon Joe Bonamassa said he is “One of the best, if not the best guitar player in the world”, whilst Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge) said ‘this guy could be the best player on Earth” not to mention an admirer in the shape of Carlos Santana.

18 year old guitar prodigy and Buddy Guy protégé Quinn Sullivan has been a music professional for more than 75 percent of his life. He’s shared the stage with Buddy Guy aged eight, Eric Clapton, Los Lobos, The Roots, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi and Joe Bonamassa, and he opened for B.B. King, who later invited him to play his treasured “Lucille” guitar. He’s also appeared on national TV, with guest appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Oprah, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Conan with Jeff Bridges and twice on The Ellen DeGeneres show aged six and fourteen. Sullivan has packed some extraordinary experience into his decade-long career, Midnight Highway is taken from the his new album of the same name which was produced by multi GRAMMY® winner Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi, Johnny Winter).

It’s just so right-with-the-universe that Gary Hoey’s 20th album, Dust & Bones is an exuberant fusion of blues and rock. After all, this accomplished and diverse guitarist has explored several styles in his career—hard rock, rock, surf, and prog, to name a few. The title track is a bonafide Hoey classic. In 1987, the Boston-born guitarist caught the ear of Ozzy Osbourne—no slouch at picking great guitar players—and almost ended up in his band (The gig ultimately went to Zakk Wylde.) Hoey scored a major-label record deal where his version of Focus’ “Hocus Pocus” brought him huge success.

There’s no doubt about it, the state of Texas is well known worldwide for its fiery blues guitar players, and Lance Lopez (also singer/guitarist for Supersonic Blues Machine) perfectly encapsulates that fire on Mr Lucky with some furious piece of fretboard mastery.

The album is awash with some of the finest blues artists in modern times; powerhouse Beth Hart is unstoppable on Love is A Lie, the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter is riding a creative tidal wave, firing out acclaimed albums, hooking up with the biggest names in music and rocking the house each night with that celebrated burnt-honey voice. Arena rockers Black Stone Cherry returned to their roots in September releasing a blues cover record Black to Blues, here they explode in BSC style on Muddy Waters, Champagne & Reefer. Louisiana’s Kenny Wayne Shepherd prowls on Diamonds & Gold saying; Diamonds & Gold is a wink-wink kinda thing about how materialistic our society has become. It’s like, we should be living for bigger things than how much we can accumulate. If you look at the mainstream and what young people are led to believe they should work towards – it’s all just stuff. And stuff doesn’t have much substance. So that song is just to kinda inspire people to look for more in life.”

Nashville trio SIMO get funky on People Say, slide guitar maestro Sonny Landreth demonstrates his chops on this live version of Blues Attack taken from Recorded Live In Lafayette. Blues warrior Walter Trout shows why he is at the peak of his career with the formidable We’re All In This Together ft. Joe Bonamasssa. Jonny Lang returned with his first new album, Signs in 4 years in 2017 and Stronger Together is a soul crossover highlight. Chicago blues man Ronnie Baker Brooks, son of the late great Lonnie Brooks, delivers some fine blues, soul and funk with Times Have Changed ft. Al Kapone. Orlando’s favourite band Thomas Wynn & The Believers deliver an exquisite performance on Wade Waist Deep whilst Supersonic Blues Machine go from strength to strength and reach for the sky on the festival favourite, the hypnotic L.O.V.E.

Ronnie Baker Brooks was born in Chicago, and started playing guitar around age six. At 19, he joined his father, Lonnie Brooks who by then had influenced some of the most well-known bluesman of our history: Jimmy Reed, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Johnny Winter, and Junior Wells. For 12 years the two would tour together, putting Ronnie out front with Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Koko Taylor.

Times Have Changed, Brooks' first album in ten years, carries with it the weight of grown perspective and time spent perfecting old material. Brooks worked it with Steve Jordan, whose work runs from Keith Richards to Stevie Wonder, John Mayer and Eric Clapton.

The whole album came together over the course of a few weeks at Royal Studios in Memphis, the home of Al Green, Syl Johnson and Bobby "Blue" Bland. Jordan and Brooks brought in a mint press of Memphis music royalty: Stax Records staple Steve Cropper (Booker T. & the M.G.'s, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave), Archie Turner (Al Green, Syl Johnson, O.V. Wright), jazz saxophonist Lannie McMillan, and R&B icon Angie Stone. For several tracks, Brooks also enlisted members of the legendary Hi Rhythm Section, which served as the house band for hit soul albums by artists like Al Green and Ann Peebles.

Big Head Todd and the Monsters has joined forces with three second-generation blues stars, Mud Morganfield, Billy Branch and Ronnie Baker Brooks, to pay tribute to one of the pillars of modern blues, and one of the most influential songwriters of early rock and roll.

Big Head Todd and the Monsters have been fans of blues music since their first days together playing music in high school. In 2011 the band delved into the blues with their first Big Head Blues Club project, 100 years of Robert Johnson, which featured guest appearances by BB King, Hubert Sumlin, Charlie Musselwhite, Honeyboy Edwards, and more. That album led to a limited number of tour dates under the Big Head Blues Club moniker that same year.

Together these four artists form the 2016 incarnation of the Big Head Blues Club, armed with their brand new album “Way Down Inside” featuring an incredible playlist of songs from Willie Dixon, possibly the most prolific and accomplished songwriters in modern blues and rock n’ roll.
