Well, we just released two albums on New Orleans-based indie label Cash Munkey Records titled “Have Mercy” and “Hump Night 55”. Dom from Backsliders is on both of them. He came to visit us in New Orleans while we were recording and we’re proud as hell to have him playing with us. We met him and Rob at Wangaratta Jazz Festival back in 2013 and kinda hit it off. Ended up out int the parking lot swapping lies and tequila until the wee hours. While he was in NOLA with us, we started talking about the idea of touring together because the two bands complement each other on a bill…they cover areas of music that we don’t, and we cover areas of music that they don’t…so everybody who comes to the shows should leave tired and happy!

Greg Copeland was born as Gregory Andre Copeland in Portsmouth, Virginia (USA). There was always music being played in the Copeland family. Greg ´s mother Delores Copeland was a Gospel Singer with an excellent voice. "I still remember as a small child how my Mother used to sing me a song before I went to sleep at night. She had so much emotion in her voice. Just by her singing I could tell if she was happy or sad. Her perserverance and the love that she showed me and my brother while raising us alone still influences me deeply and has a great impact on my singing and songwriting.“Greg was and still is heavily influenced by artists such as James Brown, Wilson Pickett and Buddy Guy just to name a few. These influences have helped Greg to develop his own unique singing style.

Smooth, slick, rough and down south dirty. These are the words that best describes his vocal style. One minute he will grunt and groan and remind you of James Brown. Then suddenly he will let out a scream that reminds you of Wilson Pickett while all the time still being himself. „When I sing I want to make you feel wanted and needed. Make you feel my hurt, my pain, my happiness and my sadness. I want to ask for forgiveness if I did something wrong and forgive you if you did me wrong. All of these things I try do with my music. I am a Funk, Soul and Blues man through and through. I don ´t just sing notes, I sing emotions also“.

Greg is an established songwriter and has collaborated with artists such as ex-Eruption keyboarder Gerry Williams, keyboarder/singer-songwriter Piano Pete Budden and Internationally acclaimed Roots, Folk and Blues singer/songwriter Big Daddy Wilson. Greg has also graced the stage with some of Europe ´s finest musicians. Artists such as Big Daddy Wilson, Gregor Hilden, Guitar Crusher, Greyhound Blues Band and Blues Power.

Stevie’s musical journey began at a very young age, sleeping behind a drumset where his parents worked as local artists. At the age of 15, Stevie B got his first opportunity performing at the Juneteenth Festival as the Muddy Suns. Shortly after, Stevie B was given the opportunity to host a Jam Session at the legendary San Jose Blues Bar “JJ’s Blues”. Over the years, he has performed at festivals, venues, and private events, building a reputation for his energy, authenticity, and expressive stage presence.

As the founder and driving force behind the Muddy Suns, Stevie guided the band from 1999 to 2025, leading them to become one of the Bay Area’s standout acts. Known for their genre-crossing blend of Blues and funk the Muddy Suns entertained crowds at countless events and remained a fixture of the Bay Area/Northern California music scene.

After his time with the Muddy Suns, Stevie B started the Stevie B Band, continuing to perform traditional Blues and soulful Americana grooves. This group carries forward his roots of music style, while keeping the spirit of the Blues alive. If you’re in the area, you can catch the Stevie B Band live by checking his calendar.

Beyond the stage, Stevie B is also the owner of Honey Lane Studio, a professional, musician-friendly space where he records, rehearses, and opens the doors to other artists seeking a creative environment. The studio reflects his commitment to fostering community and supporting the next generation of musicians.

Whether playing solo, leading the Muddy Suns, or mentoring artists at Honey Lane Studio, Stevie B continues to honor the traditions of roots music while bringing his own voice to every note. His harmonica reminds us how one instrument, in the hands of a true artist, can move an audience and tell a story like no other.

Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar has released their new live album “A Beautiful Buzz”. Captured during the band’s Love Is All Around tour across Western Canada in 2022, the album documents the raw power, soul, and communal energy that have made Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar one of Canada’s most electrifying live acts. Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar occupy a rare space in modern roots blues music: deeply reverent of soul and gospel tradition, yet unafraid to push those forms into something louder, sweatier, and fiercely alive. Led by Martin’s unmistakable, powerhouse vocal delivery, the band has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s most commanding live acts, equal parts grit, grace, and emotional force.

A two-time JUNO Award nominee and seven-time Canadian Blues Award nominee for Female Vocalist of the Year, Samantha Martin has long drawn comparisons to the great soul shouters of the past. As Rhythm & Booze put it, “Samantha Martin’s name can be talked of in the same sentence as Etta James, Tina Turner, and Aretha Franklin. It’s soul for the modern age with a turbocharger.” Paris Move (France) went further, calling her “indispensable, Samantha Martin, the new Southern soul tornado.”

Those comparisons aren’t casual. Over the course of their catalogue, discerning listeners will hear echoes of Mavis Staples, Sharon Jones, Otis Redding, Booker T. & the MG’s, and the Memphis Horns, all filtered through a modern, road-hardened sensibility. It’s classic soul DNA delivered with contemporary urgency and volume. As Glide Magazine noted, “a jaw-dropping display of vocal prowess that showcases this band’s brand of supercharged blues. Comparisons of soul greats run rampant, but like Brittany Howard, Samantha Martin might be the next musical game changer.” /Bluestown Music

Personnel: Samantha Martin (vocals, acoustic guitar); Curtis Chaffey (guitar); Ian McKeown (bass); Will Fisher (drums); Jeff Heisholt (keyboards); Emily Ferrell (trombone); Andrew Moljgun (saxophone); Brian Walters (trumpet); Tafari Anthony, Sherie Marshall (background vocals).

Olav & the Blues Cruise - Unfulfilled Desire

Size: 310 MB
Time: 44:03
File: Flac
Released: 2022
Styles: Blues

1. You Left Me (3:55)
2. Let It Die (6:06)
3. Wasting Time (4:45)

6. Southern Fairy (3:55)
7. Lead Me On (5:04)
8. Investigation (6:31)
9. A Man Like That (3:54)

Recently the first album "Unfulfilled Desire" was released with eight songs plus a bonus track, seven of which were written by Olav Boereboom. The band is supported by a number of colleagues on bass, harmonica and vocals. The result is a very nice album with fine blues, varying in style and tempo, so that listening to it remains interesting from start to finish. The two covers are a surprising version of Steve Winwood's "Talking Back To The Night" with lyrics slightly modified by Olav, and "Lead Me On" by Curtis Harding. The lyrics of their own songs are very personal, as evidenced by titles such as "You Left Me" and "Let It Die", with which the CD opens. Very nice is the duet with Suzan Wattimena in "The Mail" and the solid "Investigation", in which guitar and keyboard alternately solo. In short, a great album with excellent music. Definitely recommended.

Swing, swing, swing. That's what it's all about! The genre made popular in the late thirties and forties is evolving ever still to its contemporary form today. The style that we know as jump blues and boogie woogie has found a solid home in the European club scene. At the fore-front of this scene are the Belgium based Electric Kings, leading the way with fresh renditions of blues classics, jump standards and originals - all with a flair of their own.

Fronting this ensemble is Big Dave. His strong but relaxed vocals are enhanced by his straight ahead, no nonsense, harmonica playing which made him one of the most respected harmonica players on the scene today.

Personnel: Big Dave (vocals, harmonica); Luke Alexander, Marck T. (guitar); Luke Henry Jr. (double bass); Willy Maze (drums); Prince Thomas (piano); Roel Jacobs (saxophone).

Discovered quite by chance: this very surprising and versatile Tribute CD in which the laid-back guitar songs of JJ Cale are cast in a completely different jacket. The entire CD perhaps breathes the atmosphere of the southern states of the US even more strongly than with JJ Cale himself; steaming swamps, sweltering pubs, endless prairies. They are also all local bands that have covered the songs. Unpolished and raw rock with Rufus Huff, harmonic a cappella with the Persuasions, cheerful country with Tim & Roddy Smith's Groove Gang, a heavy but clear electric guitar with Michael Powers, and the pounding rhythm of Swamp Cabbage. I am a big fan of JJ Cale's work, but with this CD I am almost hypnotized. Big words perhaps, but I think this disc should not be missing in the closet of any JJ Cale fanatic. Four and a half stars, just under five because of a few misses.

Mac Arnold & Plate Full O' Blues - Country Man

11. Screamin' And Cryin' (3:10)
12. Mule For A Chevrolet (3:42)
13. Swing Me Back Home (3:47)

After years of playing bass with Chicago legends like Muddy Waters and Otis Spann, not to mention a stint in the Soul Train house band (he was also one of the show's producers) and a contribution to the theme of Sanford and Son, Mac Arnold moved back to his South Carolina home. But you can't keep a good bluesman down, and after his friends and neighbors kept asking him to perform, he put together his first band, Mac Arnold & Plate Full o' Blues. The musicians may be neighbors, but they're all first-rate players, and on their third album, produced by another Muddy Waters' alum, Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin, they range from folky love songs and country-blues to Chicago urban sizzlers and blues-rock shuffles.

Arnold fronts the band with a warm, bluesy voice somewhere between Waters' shout and the low-down growl of Howlin' Wolf. He leaves most of the music to his bandmates, but they're up to the task. "I Ain't Sugar Coatin'" opens this up with a straightforward sardonic look at modern life, laying down the law to fathers who leave their families amidst rising prices and young men who wear their jeans so low you can see their underpants. Austin Brashier's guitar switches between rhythmic, fuzz-drenched chords and brittle lead lines. Margolin's lead guitar adds some fire to "Too Much," a blues-rock tune that sings the praises of a woman who's just too damn hot. Arnold's shouted vocal is full of gritty sexuality.

Arnold's famous for his homemade gas can guitars, instruments that have a surprisingly rich sound despite their humble origin. He plays a killer hook on "Cackalacky Twang," a bouncy dance number then turns in a short, sharp solo that showcases the instrument's high but surprisingly rich, treble-drenched sound. Arnold then does Waters' "Screamin' and Cryin'' country style, with his weathered vocal and Margolin's acoustic guitar taking things back to their roots. The album closes with the instrumental "Swing Me Back Home," and Country Man has just done that. letting the boys in the band show off their chops with Brashier's aggressive, stinging guitar and Arnold's jazzy, inventive bass playing stealing the show. /J. Mac Arnold's Blues Revival - Live At The Grey Eagle

Album: Live At The Grey Eagle

10. Got My Mojo Workin' (6:08)

Southpaw bassist and South Carolina native Mac Arnold was only ten years old when he and his brother built a guitar out of a gas can, a couple strips of wood, a handful of nails, and some screen wire. Things just got better from there. Arnold played in J. Floyd & the Shamrocks (who frequently featured a young James Brown on piano) while still in high school, and officially began his professional career when he joined Charles Miller's band in the early '60s.

He moved to Chicago around 1965 and began gigging with saxophonist A.C. Reed before hooking up with Muddy Waters and his band in 1966. The Waters stint led to a fair amount of studio work, and Arnold played bass on several 1960s blues albums, including Otis Spann's The Blues Is Where It's At and John Lee Hooker's Live at Cafe Au Go Go.

In 1967 Arnold formed the Soul Invaders, who worked as a backing unit for B.B. King and the Temptations, among others. Arnold relocated to L.A. in the early '70s, where the session work continued (that's Arnold playing bass on the Quincy Jones-produced Sanford and Son theme song), and from 1971 to 1975 he was part of the set band for the Soul Train television show. A stretch backing up Bill Withers followed.

By the 1980s Arnold had tired of the road and moved back to South Carolina, settling in his hometown of Pelzer, where for all practical purposes he retired from the music business. A group of local musicians kept after him to start performing again, though, which led to Arnold eventually fronting his own band, Mac Arnold & Plate Full O' Blues. In 2006 the group released the self-produced album Nothin' to Prove, officially credited to Plantation #1 Productions. /Biography by Steve Leggett, AllMusic

9. Jump, Jive, An' Wail (3:42)
10. Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody (4:38)

Louis Prima Jr. has a larger-than-life legacy to live up to, but after the first notes of “Oh Babe,” the Prima Sr. track that opens this album, comes blasting out of the speakers, you’ll have no doubt that he’s up to the task. Louis Jr. has assembled a new band of Witnesses including vocalist Sarah Spiegel, and they add a razor-sharp rock & roll edge to the to ten of the tunes his dad made famous. “Bei Mir Bist du Schön,” a duet with Spiegel, follows the aforementioned “Oh Babe.” Wisely, Spiegel doesn’t try to outsing Keely Smith, but settles on a mischievous delivery that’s all her own.

Later on, her lead on “A Sunday Kind of Love” displays a simmering, low-key soul halfway between Vegas and a Detroit street corner. Louis Jr. is a powerful vocalist himself, exhibiting the same kind of irrepressible energy that made his dad such a formidable performer. The band rips through classics like “Las Vegas Woman,” “Night Train,” and “Jump, Jive an’ Wail” with an energy that would make his dad proud. Louis Jr. may not be the new King of Swing yet, but this album cements his place as a Crown Prince. This CD will blow the roof off of any party once you hit play and turn up the volume.

Chris Bergson - East River Blues

6. What Would I Do Without You (4:22)
7. Driftin' (4:45)

Acclaimed guitarist and singer Chris Bergson marks 30 years in New York City with East River Blues. Featuring Larry Grenadier, Herlin Riley, and Jay Collins, the album blends blues, jazz, soul and classic Blue Note influences. The album pays tribute to foundational influences including Muddy Waters and Ray Charles, as well as the soul-jazz spirit of 1960s Blue Note icons like Grant Green, Lou Donaldson, and Herbie Hancock. The result is a recording that feels timeless yet alive in the present moment.

The core of the album features Bergson in a stripped-down trio setting with master bassist Larry Grenadier and New Orleans drum great Herlin Riley. Saxophonist Jay Collins joins the group on three tracks, adding warmth and fire to the ensemble sound. The recording nearly took a different path. Originally, the drum chair was to be filled by the late Al Foster. Following Foster’s passing just weeks before the scheduled session, Bergson reached out to Herlin Riley - fresh from sharing the stage with him at a Jazz at Lincoln Center blues jam. By remarkable coincidence, Riley and Grenadier performed together the night before the Catskill recording session. What followed feels, in Bergson’s words, “meant to be.”

Chris Bergson has long been recognized as one of modern blues’ most inventive voices. Inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame as a Master Blues Artist, he is known for a sound that bridges blues, soul, jazz, and Americana. In addition to leading the Chris Bergson Band, he is an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music. With East River Blues, Bergson distills three decades of experience into a record that feels grounded, honest, and deeply musical - like the river that inspired its name, constantly moving yet timeless. /Blues Magazine

Necessity is the mother of invention; Mac Arnold arrived at that realization early in his career. When he was a mere teenager, the Upstate South Carolina native fashioned a guitar out of a gasoline can, a broomstick and wires. He did so when is father prohibited him from buying a proper instrument. Fast forward nearly 70 years – a time in which Arnold played with James Brown, Muddy Waters, Otis Spann and John Lee Hooker – and he’s still doing things his own way. A champion of the indie and DIY aesthetics long before those terms were in common use, Arnold has self-released albums featuring him and his long-running band Plate Full O’ Blues.

Recipient of myriad awards from the Blues Foundation and other institutions, the 82-year-old Arnold has scaled back his activities to some degree, performing a bit less often than in previous years. But he’s still managed to turn out a fine new album, On a Mission. Featuring mainstays Austin Brashear and Max Hightower on guitar, the album – Arnold’s first in quite some time – serves up eight new original songs. With the assured musical firepower of his two guitarists plus the rhythm section of Mike Frost (bass) and drummer Rick Latham, for On a Mission Arnold sets aside his trusty gas can guitar, focusing solely on vocals. /Bill Kopp

Formed in Montreal in the mid 1960s as Les Gants blancs, the band went through a variety of names (including "7e Invention", "Grandpa & Company", "Offenbach Pop Opera", and "Offenbach Soap Opéra") before settling on Offenbach in 1969. The band initially consisted of vocalist and lyricist Pierre Harel, guitarist Johnny Gravel, organist and singer Gerry Boulet, bassist Michel Lamothe (son of country singer Willie Lamothe), and drummer Denis Boulet (Gerry's brother).

Offenbach Soap Opera released their debut self-titled album, Offenbach Soap Opéra, in 1971. Although the band's material was primarily in French, that album also included two English songs, "No Money No Candy" and "High But Low".

Denis Boulet left the band in 1972, and was replaced by Roger (Wezo) Belval. In November of that year, the band performed a "Mass for the Dead" at Saint Joseph's Oratory, which was released on album as Saint-Chrone de néant.

In 1973, Pierre Harel left the band to pursue a career as a filmmaker and the band toured France. They were based there for the next two years as they toured Europe extensively. Several performances from this era were documented in the concert film Tabarnak, directed by Claude Faraldo. In 1975, the band returned to Montreal.

Lamothe and Belval left in 1977 and were replaced by Norman Kerr on bass and Pierre Lavoie on drums; Jean Millaire also joined the band that year as a second guitarist, but left within the year and was replaced briefly by Doug McCaskill, then permanently by John McGale. Kerr and Lavoie departed in 1978, and were replaced by Breen Leboeuf on bass and Robert Harrisson on drums.

In 1976, the band recorded its first of two English albums, Never Too Tender, and toured across Canada to promote it. They subsequently released three more French albums, Offenbach, Traversion and "En Fusion", before their second English language album, Rock Bottom, was released in 1980. Traversion won the band its first Félix Award for rock album of the year in 1979.

In 1979, Offenbach toured Quebec with the Vic Vogel Big Band. A recording of their concert at the St. Denis Theatre was issued in 1980 as Offenbach en fusion, which won the Félix Award for rock album of the year in 1980. The band also received Félix Awards in 1980 as group of the year and for show of the year, the latter honoring a concert on April 3 in which Offenbach became the first Québécois band ever to headline at the Montreal Forum.

In 1982, Harrison left the band and was replaced by Pat Martel. The band released three more albums of new material, as well as the live album À fond d'train (documenting a successful tour with Plume Latraverse), Gerry Boulet recorded his first solo album in 1985 and started planning a solo career. The band performed final shows at the Colisée de Québec and the Montreal Forum that year; the Montreal concert was released on album as Le Dernier show and as a concert film.

Mark “Fatt Max” Hill was born in London, England in 1967. He grew up listening to his parents’ collection of jazz, blues and Rat Pack music, but was always drawn to the blues. He was self-taught to play the guitar – “just listening and learning”. By age 9, he was picking up riffs and tunes from the radio or the family collection. At age 11 he joined his first band which performed a mix of original tunes with covers of blues and Beatles songs. He continued in bands playing in different genres through his teen years and into his 20’s, but the blues was always foremost in his mind. The latter period found him performing in acts throughout UK.

Things changed in 1996 when he got married. His wife was born in New Zealand, and in 1998 they moved to Auckland, New Zealand. Now in a new country with no knowledge of other musicians, he decided to continue his career as a solo musician. He eventually discovered the Auckland Blues Music Club and found a bunch of like-minded people, all dedicated to the blues. He started playing gigs in clubs and festivals all across the country and is looking forward to playing at the 40th Anniversary of the Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival. He continues to play solo but also plays in a band called The Dirty Tones.

Mark builds his own guitars out of scrap materials like cigar boxes and hub caps. In addition to the guitar, he also plays bass, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, keyboards, harmonica and 3-string slide guitar. He does all of his own production, engineering and songwriting in his home studio and he has a regular podcast called Blues Diabolique on the RFS Network. Although now disbanded, he was the founder and president of the Fat Bikers Motorcycle Club which had over 300 members in New Zealand, many of whom were like-minded about the love of blues music. In fact, he notes that blues is still strong in New Zealand with many young people getting involved. “We love our blues down under”.

It’s been thirty years since, as a teen from Shreveport, Louisiana, Kenny Wayne Shepherd helped shine a light on blues music in the mainstream with his album Ledbetter Heights. Now the platinum-selling, six-time Grammy-nominated guitarist has released Ledbetter Heights (The 30th Anniversary Sessions).

The newly recorded collection revisits Shepherd’s landmark 1995 debut in full, following a series of singles released in recent weeks including “Deja Voodoo,” “One Foot on the Path,” and now “Born With A Broken Heart,” each providing a look at the project’s updated sound and perspective.

Signed by Irving Azoff at just 16 years old, Shepherd recorded Ledbetter Heights while still in high school, splitting his time between classes in Louisiana and sessions in Memphis. Now, three decades later, he returns to that material. A key presence on the project is longtime collaborator and legendary drummer Chris “Whipper” Layton, a founding member of Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, who has played alongside Shepherd since the original Ledbetter Heights sessions.

The album was co-produced with Jerry Harrison, whose history with Shepherd spans multiple records including Trouble Is… and its 25th anniversary re-recording. In another full-circle detail, Shepherd returned to his original 1995 rig for the sessions, using the same sonic palette that first introduced him to audiences. /Hannah Means-Shannon, Wildfire Music

The blues musicians Lennart Olofsson from Sweden and Dan Bindel from Denmark met in the spring of 1980 in Växjö. Sweet music arose. Dan brought his slide-based delta blues and Lennart his roots in the heavier Chicago blues and white British 60s blues. They let their influences merge into an exciting decoction. The result was the cult blues band Doctor Blues. A decisive milestone in the band's history was when the blues singer Karin Rudefelt entered the scene in 1996, and the vocal part of the music gained a new dimension. Nowadays, the band therefore calls themself "Karin Rudefelt & Doctor Blues".

Karin Rudefelt & Doctor Blues have toured around Sweden and performed in most blues-profile places, like the biggest blues festivals and most important clubs that Sweden has to offer. The band is regarded as innovators of blues as a genre and likes to experiment and push the boundaries of the blues into new dimensions. Yet always with both feet deeply rooted in the traditional mould.

Personnel: Karin Rudefelt (vocals); Lennart Olofsson (guitar, vocals); Peter Borgström (bass, pedal tambourine); Tobias Magnusson (drums); Sven Torstensson (keyboard). Special guests: Brian Kramer (slide guitar, vocals); Erja Lyytinen (slide guitar).
