After years of being a sideman and gigging without recorded, Paul Oscher -- a former harpist for Muddy Waters -- made his first album, Knockin' on the Devil's Door, in 1996. Oscher stays true to his Chicago blues roots, but he wisely doesn't run through the same old standards again. Instead, he's written a set of impassioned originals, augmented by a couple of appropriate covers. Working with a talented supporting group -- featuring harpist Steve Guyger, bassist Mudcat Ward, pianist David Maxwell and drummer Big Eyes Smith -- Oscher devotes himself to guitar, showing a flair for gritty riffs and solos. But the key to the record's success are his fully realized originals, which make the album an impressive, if much belated, debut. ~by Thom Owens

Chicken Shack are a British blues band, founded in the mid-1960s by Stan Webb (guitar and vocals), Andy Silvester (bass guitar), and Alan Morley (drums), who were later joined by Christine Perfect (vocals and keyboards) in 1968.

The band were formed in April 1965, naming themselves after Jimmy Smith's "Back at the Chicken Shack" album. Chicken shacks (chicken restaurants) had also by then frequently been mentioned in blues and rhythm and blues songs, as in Amos Milburn's hit, "Chicken Shack Boogie". Their first concert was at the 1967 National Blues and Jazz Festival at Windsor and they were signed by the Blue Horizon record label in the same year.

Chicken Shack enjoyed modest commercial success, with Christine Perfect being voted Best Female Vocalist in the Melody Maker polls, two years running.

Perfect left the band in 1969 when she married John McVie of Fleetwood Mac. Pianist Paul Raymond, bassist Andy Silvester, and drummer Dave Bidwell all left in 1971 to join Savoy Brown. In 1977 Silvester joined Los Angeles based ensemble, Wha-Koo. Webb was also recruited for Savoy Brown in the mid-1970s, and recorded the album Boogie Brothers with them.

Brian Kramer from Brooklyn was barely out of his teens when he began hanging out with legendary blues men, picking up tips and advice from folks such as Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, whenever they visited his hometown of NYC. Junior Wells took a particular liking to Brian and paid careful attention in showing him the right moves and how to play from the heart. In 1989, Junior joined Brian on his first record, Brian Kramer and the Blues Masters featuring Junior Wells, Win or Lose, with Junior backing up Brian on almost every track and Brian supporting Junior on four of his songs. On these sessions were a gathering of the finest, most respected sidemen in the US, as well as former Rolling Stone, Mick Taylor. Throughout the 90s, Brian toured and continued to be a fixture within the New York club scene, performing frequently with the great blues man Larry Johnson, until relocating overseas to seek a broader range of opportunities.

Based in Sweden, Brian began to be featured on the tracks of several established artists, steadily becoming an active part of Scandinavia’s club and festival scene. Brian has shared the stage, traded licks and recorded with the Legendary Taj Mahal, Toumani Diabate, Bob Brozman, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Robin Ford, Bobby Rush, Cory Harris, John Mayall, Sven Zetterberg, Jimmy Dawkins and many others; and performed at international events such as the Cambridge Folk Festival, Bull Durham Blues Festival, Chicago World Music Festival, Notudden Blues Festival, Portugal Simply Blues Festival, etc.

When not on the road, Brian hosts his weekly International Blues Jam in Stockholm, Sweden, originally at Club Stampen, now at Engelen every Saturday, which he started in 1998. These jam sessions proved to be fertile ground for nurturing Sweden’s hottest new young blues talents, many who have become shining stars within the Blues and Jazz community; Isabella Lundgren, Jasmine Kara, Anna Christoffersson and Lisa Lystam are just a few who have gone on to tour and release their own albums after fine-tuning their skills on Brian’s popular scene. July 10th 2015 after Brian Kramer Band's performance at Sweden's biggest Blues event, Åmål Blues Festival, Brian was presented with their prestigious BLUES AWARD OF THE YEAR - a hand sculpted trophy in Brian's likeness as well as a very large check.

In 2007 Pelle put togheter his own band, simply called Pelle Lindberg Band, and despite the band's short career, they have mangaged to play at some prestigious festivals and clubs throughout Sweden. PLB has also toured Scandinavia twice serving as backing band for Kellie Rucker, something that gave them lots of attention.

Also significant for the band, is the focused solo playing from each member and their ability to take it to the fith gear, something that has to be experienced live. Pelle Lindberg Band released their debut album entitled "Put Your Foot Down" in November 2011.

Mark May Band - 2 albums: Blues Heaven / Doll Maker

Texas may have produced more great unsung blues guitarists than any state in the nation. Mason Ruffner and Chris Duarte come immediately to mind as virtuosos who have labored in relative obscurity for years. Maybe it's the stiff competition that makes it so hard to break out of the Lone Star State. Had David Bowie and Jackson Browne not championed Stevie Ray Vaughan, he might never have transcended the Austin blues scene. It appears that, in order to break out from the blues pack these days, an artist must either be a teenage wunderkind or have the help of an industry insider to grease the wheels.

If a guitarist was ever worthy of such greasing, it's Houston's Mark May, the best guitarist you've never heard of, and arguably the most versatile talent working the blues today. He lets fly on his third album, "Doll Maker," the follow-up to 1997's brilliant "Telephone Road." Don't think Mark's been idle during the interval; he spent two productive years touring as Dickey Betts's guitarist. ~Bill Kolter

It's not often that an album disavowed by its own author at the time of release goes on to become considered a modern classic. Yet that's exactly what happened with Chicago blues legend Howlin Wolf's 1969 LP "The Howlin Wolf Album", a release that has since attained mythical status due to the controversy behind it.

Released on Cadet Records, a subsidiary of legendary imprint Chess Records, "The Howlin Wolf Album" was a radical experiment for a well established artist: attempt to integrate electric instruments and psychedelic arrangements into his revered signature blues sound.

The result was an album that Wolf himself initially disregarded on the now infamous cover, but one that has won a special place amongst dedicated music aficionados thanks to its unique mix of traditional blues and electric rock elements. /Amazon

Carey Bell is an effective and surprisingly versatile singer but it is his powerful harmonica that really stands out. One of the last of the major Chicago blues harpists, Bell (an alumnus of the Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon bands) had led his own groups for most of the previous 30 years when he came out with this disc. His longtime guitarist Steve Jacobs offers some concise and stinging comments but the leader is virtually the whole show on his CD, which finds him leading a tight six-piece group. Nothing too unusual occurs but the music definitely has plenty of spirit. ~Review by Scott Yanow

The new CD from The Steve Kozak Band... IT'S TIME is here! Recorded in Vancouver BC at Afterlife Studios, site of the famed Mushroom Records. The album – Kozak’s fourth – is produced and mixed by award winning composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Matthew Rogers. Rogers is one half of the amazing blues duo, The Harpoonist and The Axe Murderer.

One of Canada’s finest blues artists, Steve Kozak has been turning heads of blues fans in Canada for over thirty years since he first broke onto the Vancouver scene in the mid-eighties.

When it comes to tasty West coast blues guitar, Kozak’s name is at the top of the list in this nation -- just ask greats like Duke Robillard and James Harman who have shared the stage with this gifted bandleader, instrumentalist, writer and singer.

Gaining national recognition in 2013 Steve Kozak won a Maple Blues Award for New Artist or Group of the Year in Canada. Steve was also awarded The Ambassador of the Blues Award for 2012 by the Blues Underground Network.

The Steve Kozak band is Steve Kozak, guitar and vocals, Dave Webb on piano and Hammond organ, Roger Brant on bass, and 2016 Maple Blues Award nominee for best blues drummer of the year in Canada, Chris ‘The Wrist’ Nordquist on drums.

04. Electric Religion (5:13)
05. Matter Of Time (3:43)
06. Draw The Line (4:03)

Opening with Blink Of An Eye, Curry is back with a strong ballad and his soulful vocals. His expressive guitar riffs are more mature and his backing band is new. Matthew plays guitar and handles lead vocals with Tim Brickner on bass, Mark Masefield on keys, Francis Valentino on drums. A super radio melody and Matthew's vocal work, backed by Valentino and Alexis Saski on vocals, this track is square on. Very nice opener. With it's funky back beat, Caroline, catches you right at the get go. Brickner, Masefield and Valentino set a great stage for Curry's vocal lead and his stinging guitar riffs have great bite. Excellent! Title track, Shine On, is another radio track with huge commercial potential. I can't say enough about Curry's vocal acuity and the overall balance of the band. His guitar is restrained but not contained showing maturity and precision. Very nice. Electric Religion is a solid rocker with a heavy, lumbering bottom. Curry steps up top with some soaring guitar pyrotechnics pleasing even the toughest critics. Very cool. With a light airy, jazz rock feel, Matter of Time, is the "pop" est track on the release. Curry's soulful vocals anchor the track with skillful B3 work from Masefield and warm backing vocals. Wrapping the release is Draw The Line, a blues rocker with clean guitar soloing and cool B3 backing. Curry has put out a real nice release here and is definitely making a name for himself with John Mayer, Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Check out this new release. It's quite good. ~bman

Another period of the veteran Chicago harp man's career that awaits CD documentation -- and one of the most exciting. Wells's late-'60s output for Bright Star and Mercury's Blue Rock subsidiary frequently found him mining funky James Brown grooves (with a bluesy base, of course) to great effect -- "Up in Heah" and his national smash "You're Tuff Enough" are marvelous examples of his refusal to bend to purists' wishes (though there's a glorious version of Bobby Bland's blues-soaked "You're the One" that benefits handily from Sammy Lawhorn's delicate guitar work). ~Review by Bill Dahl

An interesting collection of early Tiny, working with Cats & The Fiddle on five of the 14 collected tracks on this hodgepodge compilation. The rest of it is Grimes backing everyone from gospel group the Dixieaires to R&B singers Johnny Davis, Lionel Robinson, J.B. Summers and George Grant (recorded here for Gotham Records under the pseudonym of Haji Baba), along with an unissued and much wilder take of his own "Call of the Wild." Not the place to start a Tiny Grimes collection, but a nice one to add to the collection along the way. ~ Cub Koda

Tiny Grimes was a drummer and a pianist before he began playing electric guitar in 1938. He was also part of The Cats And The Fiddle, a popular jive group. On this disc, we hear a lot of Grimes' work with that group, as well as his other work with greats such as Johnny Davis, J.B. Summers, and Lionel Robinson.

lack Joe Lewis trawls the intersection of blues, soul, funk, and garage rock—a well-traveled juncture. But he has a few strategies to make this timeworn mixture more tangy on his new album, Backlash. The first is vocal: Lewis can unleash a stirring scream, a cauterizing billow of noise that’s sure to flutter your nervous system. The second is compositional: he likes shifting dynamics so that a slack song suddenly stiffens and lashes out, like a horse kicking an inconsiderate handler.

That scream, coupled with his heavy reliance on guitars, has earned Lewis comparisons to blues institutions (Muddy Waters), soul shouters (Wilson Pickett), and funk innovators (James Brown). But he prefers a different descriptor. “It’s all about putting on a good show and getting everyone having a good time,” he said in 2013. “There’s no category for that other than rock’n’ roll, as far as I know.”

Rhythmtown-Jive - 2 albums: Analog Travelog / Retrogroove Artifact

RHYTHMTOWN-JIVE is an exciting American roots combo featuring accomplished San Francisco Bay Area musicians recognized nationally for their versatility and outstanding skill. With rich vocal harmonies and tasty saxophone-based instrumentals, they offer infectious dance music, delivering inventive, original '40s and '50s influenced rhythm & blues, zydeco, jump-swing, rock & roll and New Orleans gems. They have a deep sense of the feel and mechanics of the essential grooves of these American roots styles. As a back-up group they are in demand and recognized as journeymen in their field, having worked with, among others: Bo Diddley, Big Joe Turner, Johnnie Johnson, Earl King, Robert Ward, Long John Hunter and New Orleans rock & roll sax innovator Lee Allen. They were the featured house band at the 15th annual Sacramento Blues Festival. The RJs are fronted by Tim Eschliman (founding member of the Christmas Jug Band), vocalist and bassist, who was formerly with Etta James, Commander Cody, and the Moonlighters, whose "Rush Hour" release was produced by Nick Lowe.

Following a fascination with the era of transition from '40s & '50s rhythm & blues to rock & roll, Rhythmtown-Jive is the Bay Area's leading proponent of American roots dance music, featuring driving and syncopated counter-rhythms the feet cannot deny. The "RJ"s, Formerly Five Guys Named Mo, have a refreshing repertoire which goes beyond the typical rehashed "top 40" music of yesterday usually associated with R&B dance bands. In addition to their original numbers, the members of the group draw from a well of obscure and unusual post-world war II saturday night rave-ups and moody relief numbers that offer something different for the dance-inclined public: Louis Jordan & his Tympani Five, Big Joe Turner, Hank Ballard & the Midnighters, Big Jay McNeely, Clyde McPhatter, Freddie King, Lee Allen, Clifton Chenier, Maceo Parker, Jimmy Reed, Louis Armstrong, Huey "Piano" Smith & the Clowns, Roy Brown, Thurston Harris, Ray Charles, the Meters, Smiley Lewis, Paul Gayten, King Curtis, Sonny Thompson, James "Wee" Willie Wayne, Ella Mae Morse, Lil Millet, Will Bradley, Ray McKinley & Bill Doggett.

Donald Ray Johnson's self-released

Travelin’ Man is a self-produced set of soul-blues that demonstrates his mastery of the genre as he wraps his smooth tenor around a diverse set of covers and originals. Johnson cites Tyrone Davis, Little Milton, and Johnny Taylor as influences and pays homage to them with straightforward versions of “Sugar Daddy”, “If Walls Could Talk” and “Last Two Dollars” respectively.

The title track penned by Maurice John Vaughn, is a brassy midtempo shuffle with slithery slide guitar. It’s a perfect vehicle for Johnson, whose motto is “Have drum will travel.” The drinking lament “Me and Jack (Daniels) feature Sonny Rhodes on lap steel. Both tunes would be right at home on an Elvin Bishop album, as would the churning swamp rock of Tony Joe White’s “Steamy Windows.” Another Johnson original “Apple Tree,” evokes the Ecko Records sound with its sparse instrumentation of keyboards, guitar, and programmed drums; Gib Monks’ savory sax licks break up the synthesized monotony. The treacly torch song “Always On My Mind” showcases Johnson’s versatility, but it sounds out of place and disrupts the album’s overall tone. Johnson is a restrained vocalist who uses subtlety in lieu of emotional overstatement or sexual braggodacio. Despite a few questionable decisions, the unpretentious Travelin’ Man succeeds thanks to quality musicianship, sound production, and warm, supple vocals. ~Thomas J. Cullen

10. Great Balls Of Fire (3:37)

A live concert from January 25, 1969, recorded in Los Angeles by soundman Dinky Dawson. The fidelity is very good (excellent, in fact, by late-1960s standards), and the band are good form on a nine-song set (a tenth track is just a "Tune Up") that sticks mostly to lesser-known originals and covers. That means you don't get classics on the order of "Black Magic Woman" or "Oh Well", but on the other hand it's nice to hear different versions of some of the lesser-known early Mac originals, like Peter Green's anguished "Before the Beginning" and one of Danny Kirwan's better tunes, "Something Inside of Me".

It's getting hard to keep track because of the bumper crop of official and semi-official live late-sixties Fleetwood Mac releases now available, but this is the first appearance of "Lemon Squeezer" to my knowledge, and "My Baby Sweet" is not easy to come by (although at least one version has appeared on a hard-to-find CD). No late-sixties Fleetwood Mac live release, it seems, is deemed complete without the inclusion of a couple of comic fifties rock covers, and you have to sit through "Great Balls of Fire" and "Blue Suede Shoes" here. The latter boasts over-the-top lewd lyrics, "lick my dick" being substituted for "blue blue, blue suede shoes" for a while in the chorus - just the type of schoolboy humor that might have seemed taboo-smashing in 1969, but seems sort of stupid on disc.

This release would be of more interest if there wasn't already an abundance of live and outtake early Mac available on Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac Live at the BBC, Jumping at Shadows, Cerulean, and Vaudeville Years. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

In 1929, he recorded one solitary side under the title of "Sammy Price and His Four Quarters." After a few years in Kansas City, he spent time in Chicago and Detroit. In 1938, Price became the house pianist for Decca in New York and appeared on many blues sides with such singers as Trixie Smith and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. He led his own band on records in the early '40s which included (on one memorable session) Lester Young. Price worked steadily on 52nd Street, in 1948 played at the Nice Festival with Mezz Mezzrow, spent time back in Texas, and then a decade with Red Allen; he was also heard on many rock & roll-type sessions in the 1950s. In later years he recorded with Doc Cheatham. Sammy Price was active until near his death, 63 years after his recording debut. ~bio by Scott Yanow

Little Mike And The Tornadoes - 2 albums: Payday / Heart Attack

This powerhouse blues and rock n’ roll band from New York City is led by singer, songwriter, producer, and harp master, Mike Markowitz. The band is well-known for its flawless, high energy blues sound, modeled after the great Chicago bands of the 50’s.

They have played nearly every major metropolitan area in the United States and Canada, some of the toughest hangouts, as well as the most sophisticated stages in the world, never straying from their course of delivering hard back alley blues and rough rock and roll. Little Mike, is a mean harmonica player who cut his teeth in New York City in the late 1970s and early 1980s, backing up legendary Bluesmen Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, and Jimmy Rogers. He then moved to Florida, and continued to perform and record through to the early 2000’s.

After leading a series of bands as a teenager, Mike formed the Tornadoes in 1978. At age 22, Mike was leading one of the busiest and toughest blues bands in New York City. Whenever a visiting blues artist came to town and needed a band, Little Mike and the Tornadoes usually got the call, backing artists such as Perkins, Rogers, Sumlin, Louis Meyers, Walter Horton, Bo Diddley. Mike’s reputation led to the band touring and recording as the backing unit for blues legends such as Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, and Jimmy Rogers.

The old Willie Dixon adage, "blues is truth," perfectly describes the searing, contemporary blues-rock of world-renowned guitarist and vocalist Coco Montoya. Taught by the “Master of the Telecaster,” Albert Collins, but with a hard-edged sound and style all his own, Montoya mixes his forceful, melodic guitar playing and passionate vocals with memorable songs, delivering the blues' hardest truths. He earned his status as a master guitarist and soul-powered vocalist through years of paying his dues as a sideman with Collins (first as a drummer) and then with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, before launching his solo career in 1993. Five years of constant touring with Collins and ten years with Mayall turned him into a monster player and dynamic performer. Montoya has released eight solo albums—including three for Alligator between 2000 and 2007—and has played at clubs, concert halls and major festivals all over the world. Guitar Player says Montoya plays "stunning, powerhouse blues with a searing tone, emotional soloing, and energetic, unforced vocals."

Returning to Alligator with his new album, Hard Truth, Montoya delivers one career-topping performance after another, the music immediately ranking among the best he's ever recorded. Produced by drummer Tony Braunagel (Eric Burdon, Curtis Salgado, Taj Mahal, Bonnie Raitt), the album features eleven songs, each delivering a hard truth of its own. From the radio-friendly, gospel-inspired celebration of love, "I Want To Shout About It," to the haunting "Devil Don't Sleep" to the icy-hot cover of Albert Collins' "The Moon Is Full," Hard Truth covers a lot of emotional ground. Montoya's unpredictable guitar playing and smoking soul vocals blend effortlessly with a backing band featuring renowned musicians including bassist Bob Glaub (Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Jerry Lee Lewis), keyboardist Mike Finnigan (Jimi Hendrix, Etta James, Taj Mahal), guitarists Billy Watts (Eric Burdon) and Johnny Lee Schell (Bonnie Raitt), and Braunagel on drums. Slide guitar master Lee Roy Parnell guests on "Lost In The Bottle."

The daughter of blues icon Johnny Copeland may not be the template for sassy, blues-based soul shouting -- there are plenty of similarly styled women in blues history -- but her tough, brassy vocals and female-empowered songs quickly made her one of the most popular contemporary female artists in the genre after her 1998 Alligator debut. The label released four albums from the singer, all pretty much in the same vein, through 2005, after which she took a four-year break and reappeared on the Telarc imprint with a redefined approach. This hour-plus compilation successfully grabs 15 highlights, adds a snappy Christmas song originally included on an Alligator holiday anthology, and provides a snapshot for those who want a sampler of Copeland's talents. While the strutting, harder-edged music, often including horns, is a significant part of Copeland's résumé and substantially represented here, the compilers have included some jazzy and more subtle performances that show she is comfortable dialing down the vocal fire power when needed. There's also a funky side to her personality, represented by the Tower of Power-styled "Better Not Touch" from 2005's The Soul Truth and 2002's "When a Woman's Had Enough." The disc ignores a strict chronological presentation for one that flows musically. Many of these songs were written specifically for Copeland -- she gets a writing co-credit on five --so the sound and lyrical themes remain relatively consistent, even through seven years. Since all of her discs had a similar groove, the result is more than just a batch of good tunes played and sung with conviction, but a smartly calculated summation that plays like a unified whole. In addition to gritty blues-rockers like the Stones/Chuck Berry-inspired flamethrower "Wild, Wild Woman," Copeland wrings real soul from ballads such as "Don't Whisper" and especially an intimate reading of her father's "Ghetto Child," both with a surprisingly sympathetic and sensitive touch. She's even convincing on the lone acoustic Delta blues "Beat Up Guitar," an enticing side road that might be worth exploring again in the future. Copeland's 2009 Telarc release reveals new directions for her, but this wrap-up does a terrific job of summarizing these crucial early years in her professional development. ~Hal Harowitz

We hope the album will get many music lovers to nod approvingly. We believe we have given a new, contemporary flair to classic soul, and blues music. Obviously with a Greasy sound, says Holmlund.De Most of the songs on the album are written by Espen Liland (music) and Tom Erik Holmlund (text) as well as contributions from the deceased Norwegian American singer-songwriter R. C. Finnigan.

Greasy Gravy was established in the early 2000s as a blues band who also had 50s rock and r & b on the repertoire. Since that time the band has gone more towards soul music, but a dose of soulful blues are still part of the band's repertoire and sound. The band consists of an experienced bunch of musicians from the Eastern region who has played with many famous bands in recent years and has extensive experience in the Norwegian music scene. The band is fronted by singer Tom Erik Holmlund from Hamar. Holm Lund vote first became known to people outside the Mjøs region in the environment around blue club Muddy Waters in Oslo in the 2000s. Guitarist in the band's Espen Liland from Tonsberg, he has a proven track record within bluer styles. In addition to being included in Linda Kvam Band he gladly headhunted when foreign soul / blues singers need a guitarist by Norway Office. The band's two skilled blowers are Kasper Værnes (tenor sax / Foyt) and Tom Erik Antonsen (trumpet). Bassist's veteran Rune Endal, which many would associate with Vazelina Bilopphøggers or Vidar Busk. On drums Alexander Pettersen, one widely used freelancer. He is also a member of Billy T Band and Joakim Tinderholt and his band.
