Singer / guitarist Rudy Rotta (1950) lives in northern Italy near Verona. He was born in Piedmont, moved with his parents to Lucerne in Switzerland and began playing guitar at age fourteen. Rotta often plays abroad and has worked with BB King (Montreux Jazz Festival), John Mayall, Etta James, Brian Auger and Taj Mahal (Kansas City Blues Festival).

After his albums "Some Of My Favorite Songs" (2004) and "Winds Of Louisiana" (2006) Rotta there again with another "idols". That he is a "Beatles" fan, which we already knew from his album "The Beatles In Blues" (2001), including "Love Me Do," "Dear Prudence" and "Come Together". Rotta now involves British opponent of "The Beatles", "The Rolling Stones" in his latest tribute "Plays Beatles and Rolling Stones." With eleven tracks, twenty-two combination and a bonus track "Con Le Mie Lacrime" he slaloms through the work of this British rockers.

The nice thing about this compilation is that each track both bands combine a theme and in one song neatly finishes. On the album there are non-permanent members (Pippo Guarnera: keys, Enrico Cecconi: drums and Renato Marciano: bass), also heard some guests. These are "Quintorigo" (in "Lady Jane & Julia"), the strings of the "Gnu Quartet" (in "Ruby Tuesday & Strawberry Fields Forever"), percussionist and violinist Laura Ernesttico Masotto (in "Rocky Raccoon"). ~Translated from Italian with Google Translate.

Special guests on this album include two sax players; Blues Music Award Winner and West Coast blues legend, Terry Hanck, and Dana Robbins who currently plays sax on tour in Delbert McClinton’s Band. Terry also joins Debbie in a vocal duet. Dave Keyes adds some sparkling piano to the mix, and blues-soul-rocker Jay Stollman joins Davies in an R’n B duet. As always, Davies is true to her blues roots without being an imitator, and honest to the many musical influence that have surrounded her since her youth."

Joined by a full band that includes two other guitarists (John Garcia, Jr. on lead and Ron Thompson on rhythm), John Lee Hooker is passionately rockin' on this live date (recorded at the Keystone in Palo Alto, CA in 1977). Hooker has always been known for taking quite a few liberties with his material, something that could easily throw some musicians off. Without a doubt, Hooker keeps a sideman on his toes -- and he presents even more of a challenge on stage because there are no second and third takes. But this is a band that, although not in a class with Canned Heat, obviously understands (and even thrives on) his sense of spontaneity, and rises to the occasion on such familiar gems as "One Room Country Shack," "When My First Wife Left Me" and "Tupelo," as well as the invigorating "Boogie On" (one of the many variations of "Boogie Chillen" Hooker has provided over the years). Hooker doesn't do as much improvising as he did when playing unaccompanied at New York's Hunter College the previous year, but he never ceases to be confidently soulful. Although not quite essential, The Cream is an engaging CD that definitely has a lot going for it. ~Review by Alex Henderson

"Like my pal tommy castro, i’m from east san jose, california. that’s just under oakland and san pancho. in the early sixties my older brother dennis became afflicted with the blues fever. bad. i was dragging an accordian, that was bigger than me, to the house up the street for lessons. i had a damm wagon cuz the accordian was huge. after the umteenth polka something happened. my brother started teaching me very simple 1 4 5 jimmy reed rhythms. i was his practice partner. i dug it and began to like the guitar. with the bay area we had many fusions goin’ on. santana, cold blood, tower of power, sons of champlin, funky funky funky. and the ever powerful “war” and slippin’ into darkness. these in the barrios were heavy and everywhere along with the blues. donny hathaway followed by bb king was and is pretty normal back to back. the music is a truth you cannot escape if it has to find you. it found me. basically, i went with dennis, my brother, to many concerts and clubs. using his i.d. when needed i saw a lot of blues in the bay area. charlie musselwhite was in el cerrito, hooker was always around. jr. watson, gary smith, rick estrin, were a few of the locals gettin’ it right. paul durkett, guys like that. the fillmore was full of great blues shows as was the san francisco club scene. the keystone, the stone, winterland. very accesible if you’re lookin’, as usual.

The harmonica came after the guitar. mowing yards to get $2.50 for a marine band ‘c’ harp is how i got the first one. the first bands were garage ‘ccr’ ‘fleetwood mac with peter green’ ‘stones’ ‘santana’ song murdering sessions. brutal and very fun.

I have been very very fortunate and lucky in my blues life. in california i made great friends with many who are gone now. bill, lester, fats, unfortunately the list is long but we carry on in the blues. our blues.

Living in texas in the late 80’s and 90’s gave me a chance to see some real real damm music. the south is just the south and that’s all. i wish i could take you into a saturday nite and walk you all into a smokey, packed club. the sweat runnin’ offa ya and you see albert collins leaning on the bar so you wave. you go over and the sound of lou ann barton’s amazing voice is driving derek o’brien and the band in to a texas frenzy. it’s experiences like that, that make you wanna always be a part of it. being with bill clarke on a saturday nite in watts was another animal altogether. going to smokey wilson’s ‘pioneer 88’ club and gettin’ a set up there from linda and watchin’ smokey call bill up for some serious blues biz. then off to the ‘safari room’ to see cardell aka louisiana red. then off to ‘ricky and laura’s’ or ‘babes and rick’s’, depends who ya are. hang with curtis tillman(freddie king) and big terry and laura. the great sax man ‘bill clarke(another)and the balls of fire’ are playin’ all nite. then off to ‘j.d. nicholson(t-bone) after hours’. then to ‘state st. barbeque’ or ‘popeyes’(when it was really greasy). breaktime. then as the sun comes up it’s off to get in line at the ‘pure pleasure’ lounge to sign up for the sunday jam. phillip ‘neckbones’ walker would come in and sit cross legged and ‘phrase’ the ‘okie dokie stomp’ to my slack jawed amazement.

It’s stories like this that i hope to tell you instead of who’s and where’s i been’s. later i’ll scan some interviews and press stuff. for now, just go look around and feel free to tell me how to improve this thing. remember, i’m just a jimmy reed fan, so take it easy on me. te watcho"

A solid Louisiana vocalist who plays both guitar and piano, "Rockin'" Tabby Thomas has been cutting stirring recordings since the mid-'50s. He's teamed often with harmonica players Whispering Smith and Lazy Lester, and has done several sessions for Maison De Soul and various labels owned by Jay Miller.

Thomas was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but he began his musical career in San Francisco, which is where he was stationed while he was in the army. After he completed his time in the service, Thomas stayed in San Francisco, playing shows and talent contests. He happened to win a talent contest, which led to a record contract with Hollywood Records. Hollywood issued "Midnight Is Calling," which gained no attention, and the label dropped Thomas.

After the failure of "Midnight Is Calling," Tabby Thomas returned to Baton Rouge. He began playing local clubs with his supporting band the Mellow, Mellow Men. In 1953, the group recorded two songs -- "Thinking Blues" and "Church Members Ball" -- for the Delta label. After those songs didn't gain much attention, Thomas went through a number of record labels -- including Feature, Rocko, and Zynn -- before having a hit on Excello Records in 1962 with "Voodoo Party."

Thomas wasn't able to record a hit follow-up to "Voodoo Party" and by the end of the '60s, he retired from performing music. His retirement was short-lived -- in 1970, he founded his own record label, Blue Beat. In addition to releasing Thomas' own recordings, Blue Beat spotlighted emerging Baton Rouge talent. Within a few years, the label was very successful and Thomas began his own blues club, Tabby's Blues Box and Heritage Hall. By the mid-'80s, the club was the most popular blues joint in Baton Rouge.

Although he had become a successful businessman in the late '70s, Thomas continued to perform and record. All of his efforts -- from his recordings and concerts, to his label and nightclub -- made Tabby Thomas the leading figure of Baton Rouge's blues scene for nearly three decades. Thomas was still active into the new millennium, although he wasn't performing as frequently as he had in the past. He was seriously injured in an automobile accident in Baton Rouge in October 2002.

Paul Orta, it is considered to be one of the largest and most genuine harmonica players living within the blues, was leader of the mythical The Kingpins and represents this generation of American musicians who had the fortune to take the essence of this genre directly from the sources. He has shared the stage with the likes of Jimmy Rogers, Eddie Taylor, Luther Allison, Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, among other legends.

This bluesman from Port Arthur, Texas, who has spent decades drawing half the world accompanied by the best musicians of the genre. In addition to singer and composer is the inventor of the slide harp as well as precursor of Texas Crude amplifier. Orta is classic blues manufactured in Texas, blues full of emotion and wisdom inherited as said, artists as Snooky Prior and Sonny Boy Williamson.

Tonky de la Peña, guitarist, singer, leader and founder of the legendary Tonky blues band, has recorded and toured all over the world over the past thirty years. Talk about this Madrid Bluesman is to talk about the history of the blues this side of the Atlantic, is talking about one of the maximum exponents of blues European, teacher and mentor of many leading figures in the blues done here. Artists of the stature of Naco Goñi, Francisco Simon, Adrián Costa and Marcos Coll were formed under his tutelage.

Orta and Tonky have joined forces for the second time, their first meeting already occurred in "Pawn Shop Blues" (2008) and now edit this "Hard time Blues", a work full of maturity where both artists put on the table all his wisdom and good work through seven classic tracks that carry the signature of names such as Rice Miller Jimmy Reed and Big Walter Horton.
Rounding out the disc "Babe" written by the own Paul Orta, "Texas Gulf fiesta" composed by Tonky and "Hard time Blues" signed by both.

Just when it seemed as if Blues Traveler were settling into a nice, mature roots groove, the band up and makes a star-studded crossover pop album from 2006. The hitch is, Blow Up the Moon arrives in 2015, about a decade or more removed from the glory days of all involved. Apart from Thompson Square, a country act who first debuted in 2011, the guest stars all had hits several years back: JC Chasez sways in to sing on the title track, Plain White T's of "Hey Delilah" fame play on "Nikkia's Prom," Bowling for Soup show up for two songs, as do 3OH!3, and fellow class-of-1997 alumni Jewel and Hanson both show up for a track apiece (as does American Pie survivor Thomas Ian Nichols, looking to show that he's something more than an actor and not doing a bad job of it). All of the artists, even Thomas Ian Nichols, put an indelible stamp on their respective tracks and even if only a handful of cuts feel like true Blues Traveler collaborations — including the sweet Jewel ballad "Hearts Are Still Awake" — the appeal of Blow Up the Moon is that it feels more like a buffet than a carefully crafted meal; depending on your stylistic persuasion, there may be something to satisfy.

Ever since he first started playing around the bars and clubs of Detroit at the tender age of fifteen, Katon has infused the traditional blues sound with his own Michigan ‘tude, and is today considered one of the world’s finest exponents of blues rock.

After spending 20 years on the move, honing his trade with various blues and rock’n’roll bands, Katon relocated from Los Angeles where he had been living during the mid-70’s, to the aptly named village of Hell, Michigan, and released his debut solo album, ‘Boogie All Over Your Head’. In keeping with his own DIY ethics and with a firm desire to avoid compromise, the album was released on Katon’s own Wild Ass Records label. It was his dirty boogie style, hoarse vocals and hard-hitting riffs that helped Katon win popularity with fans of hard rock and metal music as well as the blues cats.

Released in England, his second album ‘Proud To Be Loud’, cemented his international reputation as a guitarist to keep a firm eye on in the 80’s. Following wild, whiskey and sweat drenched shows in the U.K., Katon found himself in the pages of British metal publications like Kerrang! and Metal Hammer.

As the spandex-clad eighties made way for the grungy, plaid-adorned nineties, Katon responded with the sonic attack of 1992’s ‘Get On The Boogie Train’. Hard hitting and completely, gloriously lacking in subtlety, the album showcased Katon’s own unique take on a traditional genre. Fans of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn had found themselves a new hero, particularly in Europe where Katon found himself able to command a growing and fiercely loyal fan base.

1994’s appropriately titled ‘Rip It Hard!’ did exactly that, with the title track blasting out of the gates like a bull with a matador to aim at, and the record never lets up from there. No More Whisky, Lucky Lucky Lucky and Barbeque On My Boogie were instant fan favorites.

1996’s ‘Rub’ was no less ferocious, though it also managed to highlight Katon’s lighter side, with tracks like the slow blues howler If I Have A Heart Attack Baby and the acoustic genius of The Devil’s Daughter showing that Katon could play slow when he wanted to. That same year also saw the release of Katon’s debut live album, ‘Bustin’ Up The Joint! – Live’. Recorded at the intimate Howard’s Club H in Ohio, the record successfully brought all of the sweat and grit of a Michael Katon concert into living rooms all over the world.

As Y2K arrived (and the predicted devastation failed to occur), Katon celebrated with ‘The Rage Called Rock ‘N’ Roll’, his sixth solo studio album. In glorious contrast to the title, this saw Katon displaying a tad more restraint – a more song-based record.

2002’s ‘Bad Machine’ saw Katon returning to the raw and wicked fury with which he made his name. The song titles (Pierced, Tattooed And Twenty Somethin’ Boogie, Rock ‘N’ Roll, Whisky, Blood ‘N’ Guts and American McMofo) gave away exactly where Katon was coming from at this point in his life.

2006’s ‘MK’ and ‘Diablo Boogie - Blues Brewed In Hell’ both saw Katon carry on where he’d left off, bringing fire and brimstone blues and boogie to the new millennium.

2007 saw the release of his second live album, ‘Live & On The Prowl’. Recorded in Europe during the 2006 MK tour, the album exhibits the flat out sonic firepower of a Michael Katon show.

2008 saw yet another live album culled from the ‘MK’ tour, ‘Bootleg Boogie Live’. Raw and uncompromising, ‘Live & On The Prowl’ and ‘Bootleg Boogie Live’ show the world that Katon is still as relevant as ever in the 21stCentury.

As the first decade of this new millennium approaches its end, it’s refreshing to know that Michael Katon, a blues artist in the purest sense, is still around and playing music the way he wants to play it. Such integrity is rare in the modern music sense. Michael Katon is indeed the real deal.

“Today’s music ain’t got the same soul,” Bob Seger once lamented, and apparently that’s a lesson that JJ Grey & Mofro have taken to heart. The Jacksonville, Florida-based band has sustained itself for more than a dozen years, taking inspiration from its southern surroundings (as if a song such as “Florida” and “Lochloosa” leave any doubt) and archival instincts honed in a city that bears a distinctive musical history all its own. While an allegiance to the blues inspired an early affiliation with the roots label Alligator Records, it soon became evident that the group was moving into more contemporary realms, an area that finds them well in tune with today’s populist precepts. Enlisting Derek Trucks from the Allman Brothers and Tedeschi Trucks Band and Toots Hibbert from Toots and the Maytals for their fifth album, Georgia Warhouse, seems an appropriate move, but in truth Grey offers a sound that satisfies on its own. He may be the only constant member of this ensemble, but he’s overseen the band’s evolution into a tight knit soulful ensemble.

Evidence of that achievement is easily head on the group’s latest offering, the aptly titled
Ol’ Glory, an album infused with archival R&B. It effectively emulates a style that was once prevalent in the ‘60s and ‘70s, well before rap and hip hop ransacked black music almost entirely. This is the sound of Stax, Hi and the other signature labels of that particularly abundant era. ~Lee Zimmerman

Carolyn Wonderland’s live album debut is here! Even with the success of studio albums in 2008 (Miss Understood) and again in 2011 (Peace Meal), those who have been fortunate enough to witness, Carolyn shines brightest in live performance, winning legions of fans with her take-no-prisoners approach to the stage. So it made perfect sense to capture that energy of her trio in a full-length album, and even better, to do it in a trio of Texas’ most famous packed houses, Antone’s in Austin, Kessler Theatre in Dallas and Last Concert Café in Houston.

“The reigning queen of Austin blues, Carolyn Wonderland sparks fire on guitar and soulful fury in the force of her vocal grit. Since 2011’s Peace Meal, reveling in Wonderland’s rough and raw Janis Joplin-esque howl and burn-down blues, she’s lent her impeccable riffs to a number of albums, including the LP from the Stooges’ James Williamson, Re-licked.” – Austin Chronicle

The result is Live Texas Trio and in addition to Carolyn, her bandmates Cole El-Saleh on keys and bass and Rob Hooper on drums, she invited guests Guy Forsyth and Shelley King on several tracks. Opening with a blistering take on Leon Russell’s “Palace Of The King,” the collection mixes a combination of tasteful covers (Doug Sahm, Blind Willie Johnson, Larry Campbell) with new originals (including one co-write with Ruthie Foster), and live versions of favorites from prior studio albums (“Walk On”, “Only God Knows When”). The evening wraps with a spirited rendition of the Ashford/Simpson “Let’s Go Get Stoned,” a fitting anthem for Antone’s Home of the Blues.

Shoes Blues is a collection of traditional blues covers from blues greats plus original songs written by "in demand" Nashville/Muscle Shoals players and song writers. Credits of the band members include studio and touring with such greats as Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Delbert McClinton, Etta James, Bobby Blue Bland, Taj Mahal and many other blues/rock artists. Styles of music on this CD are a tip of the hat to Albert King, Little Feat, Ray Charles. BB King, James Brown and the JB's, NRBQ and the Allman Brothers Band to name a few. Started as a "side project," the musicians enjoyed the high quality of performance so much that a decision was made to create this project. The music explores the traditional blues shuffle with the addition of the "Shoe Horns," a 5 piece horn section of again top notch Nashville musicians on 3 songs. There is New Orleans "second line," Allman's style southern funk, greasy NRBQ style rock and roll and even a touch of near Steely Dan sophisticated funk. If you are a fan of any or all of these, try Shoes Blues, a fun trip through modern Americana blues. Oh, and one more thing, the album features cameo performances by Jack Pearson, former guitarist with the Allman Brothers Band and John Cowan, the remarkable, soulful voice of New Grass Revival. The John Cowan Band and now the Doobie Brothers.
