Jools Holland: Julian Miles Holland (born 24 January 1958) is an English pianist, bandleader, singer, composer and television presenter. He was an original member of the rock band Squeeze, formed in 1974. From 1982 until 1987, he co-presented the Channel 4 music programme The Tube. In 1987 he created his 19-piece big band Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, which has included vocalist Ruby Turner. Since 1992 he has hosted Later... with Jools Holland, a music show aired on BBC2, and in 1994 the BBC2 New Years Eve show Jools' Annual Hootenanny was added. Holland is a published author and appears on television shows besides his own. He regularly hosted the programme Jools Holland on BBC Radio 2.

In 2004 Holland collaborated with the Welsh singer Tom Jones on an album of traditional R&B music. Ruby Turner: Francella Ruby Turner (born 22 June 1958) is a British Jamaican R&B and soul singer, songwriter, and actress. In a music career spanning more than 30 years, Turner is best known for her albums and single releases in Europe and North America. She is also known for her work as a session backing vocalist, artists she has worked with include Bryan Ferry, UB40, Steel Pulse, Steve Winwood, Jools Holland, and Mick Jagger. She has written songs that have been covered by artists including Lulu, Yazz and Maxi Priest.

Turner achieved the rare feat, for a British singer, of reaching no. 1 on the US R&B chart, with "It's Gonna Be Alright" in February 1990. Between 1986 and 1995, eight of her singles appeared in the UK Singles Chart with "I'd Rather Go Blind" being the most successful, reaching no. 24 in 1987. Turner performed at the Birmingham Heart Beat 86 concert, which featured George Harrison; and also sang on BBC Television's Jools' Annual Hootenanny, from 2007 to 2017 inclusive. Nine Below Zero started life in South London during 1977, in the midst of the punk rock boom in England - but their sound and inspiration were so totally counterintuitive to what was going on in punk rock that they scarcely seemed to be part of that movement, apart from their extremely energetic attack on their instruments. Rather than noise for its own sake or auto-destruction, their inspiration lay in classic Chicago blues (though John Mayall's early music and that of the Who and the Kinks from early in their careers also figured into their sound).

Dennis Greaves (lead vocals, guitar), Peter Clark (bass), and Kenny Bradley (drums) - soon joined by Mark Feltham (who actually replaced a teacher of theirs who had sat in on the early gigs) on vocals and harmonica - were schoolmates and friends who shared a love of blues; all had all come into the world in the early '60s, and might well have resigned themselves to having missed the boat for the British blues revival by virtue of having been born in the midst of it. Instead, they reached back to that era and found themselves pegged as part of the "mod revival" in the midst of the punk era.

Originally billed as Stan's Blues Band, they made a name for themselves locally in South London, sounding a lot like the Who from their "maximum R&B" days and the Kinks from their early days, and arrived as younger rivals to Dr. Feelgood. A couple of years later, they acquired a manager and a new name, taken from a song by Sonny Boy Williamson II, and cut a debut record on their own label. By 1980, they'd been signed to A&M Records' British division and took the bold step of making their major-label debut a live album from the Marquee Club in London - to judge from the results, one heartily wished that some of the earlier bands that inspired them had displayed similar daring.

Live at the Marquee, recorded on June 16, 1980 - by which time Stix Burkey had replaced Bradley on the drums - was a success and led to their follow-up album. For their sophomore effort, Don't Point Your Finger, they were determined to translate their live energy into the studio and turned to no less a producer than Glyn Johns, who had worked with the Rolling Stones and the Who in their respective best years. The resulting record reached number 56 on the British charts.

The band's upward momentum was slowed in the years that followed, with Clark's departure (replaced by Brian Berhall), though a third album, Third Degree, followed - but it seemed as though the moment had passed, as that record never got the attention or recognition it deserved from the press or the public. Greaves' involvement with an outfit called the Truth, who coalesced as a full-time band in 1984, seemed to bring an end to Nine Below Zero, and that might have been as far as the group got. But a 1990 reunion got them playing before sell-out audiences, and the group has been working ever since, with Greaves on lead guitar and Mark Feltham even returning to the fold in 2001. /Biography by Bruce Eder, AllMusic

Drummer Paul Tsanos has played with some of the top names on the Liverpool music scene, including Pete Wylie and Ian McNabb, Connie Lush & Parlour Flames with Bone head from Oasis. He also performed alongside Ringo Starr at the Liverpool Capital of Culture concert at the Echo Arena in 2008.

Bass player Pete Somerville was recruited after he supported the legendary blues man Peter Green at the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain and he has also played with Ian McNabb.

11-tracker from Glasgow-based sax maestro McGee, who has been a leading light on the scene there for over thirty years as well as touring all over the place backing up numerous blues and jazz artists. This album consists of Deke’s own compositions, written in the spirit of classic R&B of the late 1940s, plus a couple of jazz-based instrumentals and slow blues. Deke’s tough blowing and pleasing vocals is accompanied by a fine little combo of guitar, keyboards, bass and drums. All fellow Glaswegians I presume.

‘Mr Cornbread’ is a fine tribute to the honking of Hal Singer, utilising the basic tenor riff before the band jumps in with a rollicking and infectious beat. ‘Blowout’ is another honking instrumental reminiscent of Big Jay at his best whilst ‘Jumpin’ Jesus Holy Cow’, ‘Jumpin’ Out The Window’ and ‘Shut Your Mouth’ are further examples of classic R&B/jump blues. The best track for me is ‘The Sweetheart Blues’, a great New Orleans-flavoured number, which would have served Fats Domino proud. If you’re a fan of classic R&B as put out by the likes of Louis Jordan, Roy Milton and Joe Liggins etc, then Deke’s your man. /Tony Watson, Blues & Rhythm Magazine

Many years ago, the Jive Aces were drawn to each other through a common love for American roots music: blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, jazz, and swing. When asked how they discovered this music as teenagers east of London, England, they always tell the same story - it was through the door kicked open by Elvis Presley, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. That Memphis catalyst, along with a few others, started a musical revolution and evolution.

The Jive Aces are a six-piece UK-based, swing band that was formed in 1989. They were Britain's Got Talent semi-finalists in 2012. They have released 11 albums, as well as compilations, EPs and singles and have performed at numerous music festivals. The band was founded by vocalist Ian Clarkson, drummer Peter Howell (who went to school with Ian in Billericay), bassist Ken Smith and saxophonist "Big" John Fordham. The four met in East London jive and jazz clubs. They cut their teeth street entertaining and were soon being offered shows in UK and Europe. After several years of touring the band with various other musicians, the four met Alex Douglas (trombone, bongos, blues harp, washboard) and Vince Hurley (piano) who became permanent members. Grazia Clarkson, the band's publicist, has also become a regular performing member playing several featured songs on accordion.

The band is recognized as one of the top swing bands in the world, something borne out by their extensive international travel (the band has performed in over 40 countries). The June 2015 issue of Vintage Rock magazine described them as the "UK's number one jive and swing band". They have received awards from Variety, the Children's Charity and the City of Derry International Music Award in 2006. On 12 September 2018 The Jive Aces won "Best Band" at the Boisdale Music Awards. The award was presented by Jools Holland, who then joined the band for a boogie woogie jam session. /Wikipedia

Mark "Deke" McGee started playing saxophone at the age of thirteen, after hearing Bill Doggetts "Honky Tonk" played by the legendary Clifford Scott. He began studying the sound and the stylings of all the great swing and rhythm n' blues horn men of that era such as Arnett Cobb, Illinois Jacquet, Herschel Evans, Lee Allen, Sil Austin, Red Prysock, Big Al Sears, Plas Johnson, Sam "The Man" Taylor and the great Texas tenor King Curtis.

As a sideman, Deke has performed all over the world at jazz and blues festivals in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, London, Dublin, Antwerp, Paris and numerous other places. This has seen him recording, supporting and sharing the stage with names such as Buddy Guy, Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh, Hamish Stuart, Phil Guy, Lazy Lester, Sugar Blue, Zoot Money, Otis Grand, George Melly, The Fratellis, Band Of Friends, Martin Stephenson, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, The Dan Reed Network, Jackson Sloan and the Rhythmtones, Big George and the Business, The Nimmo Brothers, The Cobramatics, The Beatstalkers and many more.

On 20 March 2026 The Mighty Howlers were invited to perform for the renowned Friday Night Blues club at The Butler in Reading, Berkshire. The show was professionally recorded courtesy of Simon Windisch and has now been mixed and mastered into this special 2 CD live release. Rather than a studio-perfect recording, this album captures the energy, spontaneity and atmosphere of a real Mighty Howlers performance.

With over 150 combined years of gigging experience behind them, Morgen, Colin, Terry and Justin have played with many bands over the years, spanning a wide variety of music genres from rockabilly, rock classic and rock blues. They have a history of playing together from way back in the 1990's with many influences on their music. The majority of The Mighty Howlers songs have been written by Morgen over a period of many years. The experience of the other musicians has allowed a rich and punchy sound to be developed, resulting in the music heard by their large audiences today.

Previous hook-ups include Morgen and Justin in Me and The Devil as well as The Mo' Slim Stompers. Colin and Morgen in Black Cat Bone. Terry and Colin in Overdrawn, plus many more. Other bands they have been a part of include Transam and The Flat Caps. Their main influences today are Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, 50's rhythm & blues, Dr Feelgood, to name but a few.

Their tough, high energy, performances have proved to be very popular with both the dance crowd and the blues purists. Those members of the audience who would not have considered themselves devotees of Blues Music at the start of the evening, tend to be wholly converted by the time The Mighty Howlers have completed their roaring sets.

He started playing a guitar his Mother got from a jumble sale after expressing an interest in playing after hearing ''Purple Haze'' by Jimi Hendrix at school. He then had lessons for three or four years, before teaching himself. His Fathers record collection was mainly country blues (especially Big Bill Broonzy) and 60s Blues and Rock and Roll , all heavily guitar led. For an aspiring young guitarist, this was a library of exciting tricks to learn, more so than other music around at the time or since, and Oliver quickly became a student of the blues and its many forms. But the lessons really started when he began playing with other musicians....

'I got ok at it (guitar), and my Uncle Martin introduced me to some local musicians, including Steve Walwyn (guitarist with Dr Feelgood and The Big Town Playboys at the time). Steve invited me up on stage when I was 15, and the buzz was amazing, I knew what I wanted to do...'

Oliver then formed his first band, with Chas Chaplin (the drummer from Steve's band) on drums, and firstly Matt Clark then later Craig Rhind (also from Steve's band) on bass....the band was called The Bluetits.

'Retrospectively, I was so lucky to be playing with experienced and tasteful musicians like these, really spoilt-they saved me years of messing around and pointed me in the right direction'.

Around this time Oliver saw Mike Sanchez, then front man of The Big Town Playboys;

'I was blown away with his style and charisma, and also the level of musicianship, I'd never seen anyone that good before. The fact that it was wrapped up with a great show as well was awesome, he had everything'.

This made an impression, and Oliver's understanding of the whole art of the show began to develop.

It was also around this time that Oliver fully began to appreciate the true brilliance of Fleetwood Mac's frontman and founder, Peter Green;

'I'd always listened to and liked Peter Green, but one day something clicked, and I just suddenly realised how different he was to everyone else. I suppose it was just growing up a bit, kind of like an acquired taste. It also happened to me like that with T-Bone Walker, and especially with Charles Brown and Johnny Moore-I listened to the albums the first time, and thought they were ok, but then something would keep nagging at me, haunting me, and I'd put the album on again, and then be think ''Wow, this is amazing.... I want to learn how to do this!'''

A few years later, Oliver was supporting a group called Electric Leg (featuring Sanchez's then bass player, Al Gare) with The Bluetits, and the guys really liked a couple of T-Bone Walker tracks The Bluetits performed. They asked Oliver up to do a couple of numbers with them. This was also where the nickname 'Darling' came from-at the end of the gig, the singer wanted to introduce Oliver, and asked 'what's his name?'. One of the band replied 'Darling', and when announced, there was some sniggering...! After this, the name stuck.

A few months later, Oliver got his first serious break, when Al put his own band together, Palookaville!

'Palkookaville! were a great band, we just did instrumentals and audiences loved it, the Spainiards especially went wild!'. Palookaville! (also made up of ex-King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys Dean Beresford and Danny McCormack) developed an under ground following, and did some memorable festivals in Spain (The Wild Weekend, The Dracula Festival), and Shambala Festival in the UK. Sanchez also became a fan of the band.

Oliver's love of music and appreciation of the best players meant he would often go and see Sanchez's band if they were in the area. 'I got to know Mike's guitarist Andy Silvester pretty well (former bass player of Chicken Shack, and close friend of Peter Green in the 60s). Peter is one of my heros, so I'd always pester Andy for stories about what he was like when they were younger'. Unfortunately Andy had to have an operation on his arm, which meant he'd be out of action for a couple of months in the Sanchez band. He asked Oliver to fill in for him.

'It was an honour, and I got my dream job..... I joined Mikes band. I ended up staying in the band for 4 years, touring around Europe and the UK, and we also went out to Las Vegas'. Oliver left Mikes band to pursue his own projects, with his own band The Dirty Robbers, and also as a session musician.

? Also in Mike's band at the time was singer Imelda May. She left Mike's group to persue a solo career which has been extremely succesful. In 2015 her guitarist left, and Oliver got the call and has been with her ever since.

As well as these artists, Oliver has worked with many different groups. Highlights include playing with members of The Buena Vista Social Club with Rhythms Del Mundo in Milan, touring with Tony Christie, and working with his own band, The Dirty Robbers.

He has worked with Tanita Tikaram, touring and appearing on her album 'Closer To The People'.

He is currently working with Welsh legend Geraint Watkins, and touring with Imelda May, as well as doing solo, duo, trio and band gigs. Oliver has worked with many musicians during his career building a solid reputation, and today enjoys being involved with some of the best artists in the business.

That Decca Records became the major blues label of the 1960's is basically down to the exhaustive efforts and enthusiasm of one man: Mike Vernon. Having joined the Artists & Repertoire Department of the company in November 1963 in a minor capacity, he progressively worked on his seniors until given the go-ahead to produce his first album, interestingly enough by one of the acts featured here: Curtis Jones. From this modest beginning Mike Vernon was eventually able to lure several 'name' Stateside blues men to 'The Supreme Record Company's' then head offices on London's Albert Embankment, for the purpose of inking a recording contract, and thereafter driving them to West Hampstead - Decca's studio complex.

Simultaneously, his was the influence which convinced some of Britain's finest home-grown exponents of the genre to follow a similar course. This package, aptly titled Raw Blues, was assembled by Mike and issued on Decca's subsidiary 'Ace Of Clubs' label in January 1967. /Excerpt from the liner notes by John Tracy

Dr. Feelgood was the ultimate working band. From their formation in 1971 to lead vocalist Lee Brilleaux's untimely death in 1994, the group never left the road, playing hundreds of gigs every year. Throughout their entire career, Dr. Feelgood never left simple, hard-driving rock & roll behind, and their devotion to the blues and R&B earned them a devoted fan base. That following first emerged in the mid-'70s when Dr. Feelgood became the leader of the second wave of pub rockers. Unlike Brinsley Schwarz, the laid-back leaders of the pub rock scene, Dr. Feelgood were devoted to edgy, Stonesy rock & roll, and their sweaty live shows - powered by Brilleaux's intense singing and guitarist Wilko Johnson's muscular leads - became legendary. While the group's stripped-down, energetic sound paved the way for English punk rock in the late '70s, their back-to-basics style was overshadowed by the dominance of punk and new wave, and the group had retreated into cult status by the early '80s.

Brilleaux (vocals, harmonica), Johnson (guitar), and John B. Sparks (bass) had all played in several blues-based bar bands around Canvey Island, England before forming Dr. Feelgood in 1971. Taking their name from a Johnny Kidd & the Pirates song, the group was dedicated to playing old-fashioned R&B and rock & roll, including both covers and originals by Johnson. John Martin (drums), a former member of Finian's Rainbow, was added to the lineup, and the group began playing the pub rock circuit. By the end of 1973, Dr. Feelgood's dynamic live act had made them the most popular group on the pub rock circuit, and several labels were interested in signing them. They settled for United Artists and released their debut, Down by the Jetty, in 1974.

According to legend, Down by the Jetty was recorded in mono and consisted almost entirely of first takes. While it was in fact recorded in stereo, the rumor added significantly to Dr. Feelgood's purist image, and the album became a cult hit. The following year, the group released Malpractice - also their first U.S. offering - which climbed into the U.K. Top 20 on the strength of the band's live performances and positive reviews. In 1976, the group released the live album Stupidity, which became a smash hit in Britain, topping the album charts. Despite its thriving British success, Dr. Feelgood was unable to find an audience in the States. One other American album, Sneakin' Suspicion, followed in 1977 before the band gave up on the U.S.

Sneakin' Suspicion didn't replicate the success of Stupidity, partially because of its slick production, but mainly because the flourishing punk rock movement overshadowed Dr. Feelgood's edgy roots rock. Wilko Johnson left the band at the end of 1977 to form the Solid Senders; he later joined Ian Dury's Blockheads. Henry McCullough played on Feelgood's 1977 tour before John "Gypie" Mayo became the group's full-time lead guitarist. Nick Lowe produced 1978's Be Seeing You, Mayo's full-length debut with Dr. Feelgood. The album generated the 1979 Top Ten hit "Milk and Alcohol," as well as the Top 40 hit "As Long as the Price Is Right." Two albums, As It Happens and Let It Roll, followed in 1979, and Mayo left the band in 1980. He was replaced by Johnny Guitar in 1980, who debuted on A Case of the Shakes, which was produced by Nick Lowe.

During their first decade together, Dr. Feelgood never left the road, which was part of the reason founding members John Martin and John Sparks left the band in 1982. Lee Brilleaux replaced them with Buzz Barwell and Pat McMullen, and continued touring. Throughout the '80s, Brilleaux continued to lead various incarnations of Dr. Feelgood, settling on the rhythm section of bassist Phil Mitchell and drummer Kevin Morris in the mid-'80s. The band occasionally made records - including Brilleaux, one of the last albums on Stiff Records, in 1976 - but concentrated primarily on live performances. Dr. Feelgood continued to perform to large audiences into the early '90s, when Brilleaux was struck by cancer. He died in April of 1994, three months after he recorded the band's final album, Down at the Doctor's.

The remaining members of Dr. Feelgood hired vocalist Pete Gage and continued to tour under the band's name. Former Feelgoods Gypie Mayo, John Sparks, and John Martin formed the Practice in the mid-'80s, and they occasionally performed under the name Dr. Feelgood's Practice. Wilko Johnson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013 and was expected to live no more than a year, but he responded well to surgery and returned to music in 2014, continuing to perform and record up until his death on November 21, 2022 at the age of 75. /Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic
