For as long as anybody can remember Brian Calway aka Hash Brown has been a ubiquitous and positive presence on the Dallas blues scene. As a function of age and geography I happen to remember Hash Brown’s early tenure as host of the Sunday Blues Jam in the late 80’s at Schooners in the newly revitalized Deep Ellum historical district. That struggling African-American enclave on the east end of downtown Dallas, was desperately trying to preserve its history, culture and legacy. Hash Brown did the same for blues men, helping them with their careers. His positive associations with Henry Qualls, Zuzu Bolin and Sam Myers, for instance, had a great impact on their legacies.

Now after 17 years between albums bearing his name, Hash Brown is back with a terrific 2022 release. Stop! Your Evil Ways on Jeff Berg’s fledgling Massachusetts based Feffrey Records label is drenched with Texas grit, more than a hint of uptown cool and a splash of cocktail blues, all stirred with the same straw that mixed the drinks of T-Bone Walker. Calway returned to New England to record this album where the blues man first plugged into the blues. With artists like Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, Johnny Nicholas, Roomful of Blues and Duke Robillard helping to pave the way for the young guitarist, vocalist and harmonica player. It turned out to be the perfect training ground for a life on the Texas blues scene.

Stop! Your Evil Ways was produced and engineered by Jeff Berg. He also plays bass throughout this 12-song offering. The disc features drummer Mark Teixeira and Bruce Bears plays organ and piano. They are joined by Doug James who handles all the saxophone duties. These three veteran musicians are all long-time members of Duke Robillard’s studio and road band.

This ensemble provides confident, solid support for Calway, who seems to know exactly what to play in each song. As important, his instincts tell him what not to play. His interaction with James’ sax passages is nothing short of sublime and harkens back to the halcyon days, when blues, rhythm & blues and, to only a slightly lesser extent, jazz got all mixed up in a mesmerizing soundscape that is simply intoxicating.

Hash Brown’s vocals might be an acquired taste. If that is the case, I acquired that taste a long time ago. Like most great musicians he treats his singing like any other instrument, in that he gives each song the sensitivity it deserves. A mix of covers by Big Bill Broonzy, B.B. King, Sonny Boy Willamson 2, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown and others sits very comfortably with songs written by Calway. These songs reflect the maturity and intelligence that resides in the heart and soul of the man known as Hash Brown. /David Mac, Blues Junction Productions

Hash Brown - Hash Brown's Texas Blues Revue

Album: Hash Brown's Texas Blues Revue
Size: 99,4 MB
Time: 42:46
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1999
Styles: Blues/R&B
Art: Full

1. Big Boy (2:50)
2. Hey Little Girl (3:29)
3. My Baby's Gone (3:19)
4. Mistreated Blues ('T' Is For Texas) (3:19)

12. I Sat And Cried (3:04)
13. Hangin' With Terry (2:56)
14. Honey Boy (2:21)

Sounding for all the world like a stack of old Duke and Peacock singles, Texas guitarist Hash Brown puts together an album with the old R&B-blues revues of the 1950s in mind. The concept works just fine, showcasing a trio of vocalists in front of a large horn-dominated band. Sam Myers is the best of the lot, blowing harp and singing with authority on "Sad and Lonesome." Darrell Nulisch contributes two fine tracks in "My Baby's Gone" and the jumping "I Sat and Cried."

Also aboard are what appears to be the final recordings of Texas legend Zuzu Bollin - a bit diminished in lung power, but still capable of bringing some heat on "Cry, Cry, Cry." Throughout, Brown's guitar work is tasty and heavy on the T-Bone Walker influences. A unique concept for bringing together a hodge-podge of diverse tracks that really works. /Cub Koda, AllMusic

A double-disc set celebrating the two-decade anniversary of Topcat Records, this 40-track compilation shines a spotlight on the various releases the Texas-based blues label have released over the years. This set mixes up old, archival tracks reissued by the label along with newly commissioned recordings, some of the cuts sounding compressed and trashy, others big and bold. This discrepancy in audio quality can create some whiplash, but it does fit the slapdash nature of the whole project; it's hard to tell why each cut was chosen for inclusion as there are no real liner notes to speak of: the booklet does take note of the players on each track, which is nice, but it'd be even nicer to have some sort of context for each of the cuts here. Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable enough sampler of modern Texas blues in its many permutations, from simple guitar and voice to full-bodied blues shuffles. ~by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Barrelhouse Chuck - Combo Classics

11. Farfisa B3 Boogie For Winwood (1:05)
12. Don't Go To Dallas (4:19)
13. Slam Hammer (2:35)

Much has been written about Barrelhouse Chuck's piano playiing over the past 35 years. Numerous references have been made to the influences of his mentors and friends Sunnyland Slim and Little Brother Montgomery, or his uncanny ability to play Chicago blues piano with deft ferocity like Otis Spann or the plantive emotion of Leroy Carr. However, little has ever been documented about his astounding talents with the Compact Combo Organs that make up an integral part of his repertoire, and are a key ingredient to what he refers to as "his sound". Chuck's life long love affair with the Combo Organ started early on. As a young boy he fell under the infectious Vox Organ riff of the 1966 garage classic "96 Teras" by ? And The Mysterians. "I just loved that song, and would look for it everytime that I saw a juke-box."

Featuring Joel Paterson, Billy Flynn, Hash Brown and Jeremy Johnson this set of 60's style blues sounds feature Chuck behind the mighty Combo Electric Organ. Think of Earl Hooker of Johnny Big Moose Walker's recordings from the 60's and you get the idea. Of course a stellar line up in support with S.P. Leary, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Richard Innes, Eddie Taylor Jr. and Curtis Salgado being just some of the many featured players.

She's Lookin' Good - Mitchell T. & the HB's (Mitchell T. Palmer & The Hash Brown Band) Recorded in 1997. This quintessential party record features 16 great Blues and Old School R&B classics superbly performed by the world renowned Hash Brown Band with Mitch Palmer letting loose with some outstanding vocals. She's Lookin' Good is definitely the real deal!

Hash Brown is the widely known as the King of the Dallas blues jams, after 9+ years of hosting Schooner's Sunday night jam and 13 1/2 years of hosting a Tuesday jam at The Bone. Hash is the heart and soul of the Dallas blues scene and has mentored literally hundreds of aspiring blues performers. A former housemate of blues giant Sam Myers, Hash has released one album on the European Parsefil label and a self produced CD titled Rollin' Blues. His versatility is amazing and has enabled him to work and record with such diverse artists as Zuzu Bollin, Big Al Dupree, Henry Qualls, Sam Myers, Bobby Rush, and Barrelhouse Chuck. Hash is currently fronting a mean three piece, The Hash Brown Band, and his guitar work is sounding better than ever. Hash's Parsefil CD was reissued on Cannonball Records as Hash Brown's Texas Blues Revue in 1999 and received good airplay nationwide, charting on the Living Blues poll for several months. Hash has a second band, The Browntones, where he plays harp and features a traditional Chicago sound. The first Browntones CD was released in Summer 2002 and also charted on the Living Blues radio poll. That release led to the formation of Browntone Records which Hash has used to help other local blues artists, such as Mitch Palmer and Chris Ruest to get their music out on CD. Recently he has been performing with The Dallas Blues Allstars, an amalgamation of his band with Mike Morgan and the Crawl. Hash is also a popular guitar and harmonica teacher and plays a mean solo acoustic gig, now and then.
