Bloodline was an American blues rock band composed of the sons of several well-known rock musicians. It was also guitarist Joe Bonamassa's first band (he was billed as "Smokin' Joe Bonamassa").

Bloodline signed to Varèse Sarabande/Capitol in 1994 and released one self-titled album. The group's members were drummer Erin Davis (son of Miles Davis), rhythm guitarist Waylon Krieger (son of Robby Krieger), and bassist and lead vocalist Berry Oakley, Jr. (son of Berry Oakley), along with Bonamassa, whose parents were musicians, though not famous. For the keyboard parts, the band called veteran keyboard player Lou Segreti. Warren Haynes made a guest appearance on the album. The record produced one hit single, "Stone Cold Hearted", which reached No. 32 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The group split shortly after the release of the record, immediately following a tour opening for Tesla and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Various - The Blues & Salvation (2-disc set)

As its title indicates, The Blues & Salvation, a two-disc anthology of previously unreleased masters lives at the cross section of classic roots blues and gospel. Filled with over two hours of music, the album features both giants of the past like the Rev. Gary Davis, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee as well as a number of artists not quite household names-Jemima James, Louisiana Red, and George Higgs-who clearly deserve to be. This is a collection of 38 gems, many reminiscent of the kinds of musical collations that were once available via Folkways Records that no blues enthusiast should ignore.

Recorded over a period extending from 1955 through 2008, the sound on some of the earlier pieces suffers from some surface noise, but it nonetheless seems appropriate for the content. Erratic sound quality is endemic to classic blues; it is a small price to pay for historic preservation. That said, the large majority of the tracks have no problem.

Guitarist, composer, educator and producer Paul Speidel has been a prominent beacon in Boston's extensive blues/jazz music scene for more than two decades--in fact--2014 is The Paul Speidel Band’s 20th Anniversary Year . . . and that’s no small achievement. Guitarists come and go all the time in Boston--a city of major-league music schools--but Paul belongs to that small group of top players who’ve dug in their heels here and insist on keeping blues and jazz, in their various permutations, vital and probing for the long haul.

But anyone familiar with Sam's bottleneck playing will know that he can hold his own with any of his American colleagues in the field of folk- and country-blues. With its stinging slide work and punchy rhythms, this 1976 release is a real treat for all fans of blues and bottleneck guitar.

Nelson Lunding is a modern-day version of the travelling piano man, a tradition that traces roots back to the early 1890's. Lunding is a saloon piano player, band leader, juke joint singer, itinerant troubadour, and keeper of the flame. He plays a rocking, muscular piano propelled by a driving left hand. It is a gripping kinetic music that demands to be danced to. When he plays for a crowd, they are experiencing the true embodiment of this very American genre.

Lunding began playing piano at the age of 6 in Westchester NY and has been playing now for 33 years. As a teenager, he was lucky to study piano with Stuart Hemmingway, a blind world class jazz and blues player. Stuart taught him blues and jazz chords and patterns. Armed with this information, In 1991, at 18 years old Nelson moved to New Orleans and started gigging with bands there. By 21 years old he was singing and playing piano in his own right on Bourbon Street. "The whole world seem to pass by the door that opened to bourbon street...I learned a tremendous amount about people and performance during that time." A year later he formed his own band named Nelson Lunding and Blues in the Pocket and at the age of 23 he produced the band on the self released Cd titled "Whiskey and a Beer to Go". The band had success in New Orleans playing among other places the Maple Leaf Bar and even a night at the House of Blues. Nelson has performed at Jazz Fest in New Orleans 10 times with various groups and has had the opportunity to play backing up some of the great musicians in New Orleans including Johnny Adams, Walter Wolfman Washington, Ernie K-doe and on. He performed at WWOZ's Piano Night in 1998 and 2007. The New Orleans influence on Nelson's music is impossible to miss. He has created his own gumbo using the tricks of the New Orleans piano greats.

It's difficult to find a review of JJ Grey's music that doesn't use the word "swamp" to describe his blend of deep Southern soul and murky funk. So that's taken care of in the first sentence here, which leaves plenty of room to focus on his fourth album's low-key yet surging backwoods R&B. The disc's title and title track refer to Grey's home state of Florida's official flower, but there is little that is floral or sunshiny about his music. Rather, the Jacksonville-based Grey prefers to hover in the gloaming, layering horns and backing vocals over grinding, midtempo blue-eyed soul. This is the most elaborately produced of his albums, but like the chitlin' circuit blues in his blood, there is nothing slick about it. Similar to the illicit affair at the heart of "Everything Good Is Bad," the disc's only cover (the original was done by the obscure act 100 Proof ), Grey's music generally stays in the shadows. The funeral piano that opens "She Don't Know" is jazzy yet ominous and sounds as humid and muggy as his hometown on an August night. Ditto for the strings that appear at the song's end and pop up like wild weeds throughout this dozen-song set. Grey has matured into a compelling vocalist and it is his emotional yet subtle singing that elevates this already powerful material. His sluggish Southern drawl on the funky "WYLF" (short for "what you're looking for") infuses a laconic, easygoing, almost lazy feel, a distinguishing characteristic of his style. That's brought into sharp relief on the sticky, sweaty sex of "Move It On," a sly, nearly seven-minute deliberate groover that sounds like something the Temptations might have recorded if they had been bred in the South. Although Grey deserves the bulk of the credit for this disc's unassuming success, longtime co-producer Dan Prothero (who has worked on every Grey/Mofro project) and in-the-pocket drummer Anthony Cole are crucial elements of the stealthy vibe. It's an album that grows on you slowly like moss at the base of a withered old tree and transports you to the dank, mosquito-infested bayou at the heart of Grey's evocative sound. ~ Hal Horowitz

Fans of JJ Grey and his ever evolving band Mofro will be delighted that the Florida swamp sage lives by the dictum "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" on This River. If anything, Grey has doubled down on the grittier, funkier aspects of 2010's Georgia Warhorse, and brought the studio closer to the stage to boot. The sound on this record is live, crackling. Half of its ten tracks are crunchy uptempo numbers that flex their funky muscles. The rest is balanced between well-articulated soul tunes, a rock number, and back-porch ballads. Set opener "Your Lady, She's Shady" is a crusty, greasy funk attack, while "Somebody Else" walks some weird line between part of the melody from the Classics IV's "Spooky" (courtesy of the Atlanta Rhythm Section's cover), vocal phrasing by Wilson Pickett, and guitars, bass, and horns coming straight from Stax. Speaking of which, the horn chart and melody in "Tame a Wild One" come right out of the late '60s -- and in the grain of Grey's whiskey voice, it feels right. "99 Shades of Crazy" is dirty-ass blues-rock inspired by Delaney Bramlett and Sticky Fingers-era Rolling Stones. Choppy syncopated funk makes its return in "Florabama," and one can feel Muscle Shoals dripping from the horns. While this is definitely retro, Grey's fans expect it; they want it. His songs and his presence as a frontman keep things choogling. But there is a surprise in every track -- the jazz-funk trumpet and Rhodes solos in the jumping, grimy "Harp & Drums" are a prime example. The songs on This River are tighter and more deftly written than on previous offerings, but the more immediate, in-the-moment-of-creation production and incendiary performances keep things from getting slick. ~ Thom Jurek

Having been immersed in the ongoing reissue of archive material from the Modern catalogue for the last few years, it’s time for me to take a short break from Bihari-land and have a rummage through the many tapes and actetates that Ace acquired when we bought the catalogues of John Dolphin from his widow, Ruth, a few years ago.

There are several reasons why we have not really given this repertoire our full attention since acquiring it. The need to find clean disc dubs to replace missing tapes, and to determine which of the several takes on some session reels was the actual master, being just two good ones. It has been a lengthy process, but we have finally filled in enough gaps to begin a comprehensive programme of reissues from the many labels that John Grattan Dolphin ran out of his round-the-clock record shop at the corner of Vernon and Central in downtown Los Angeles.

“ON WITH THE JIVE” is the first of what we hope will be several volumes of Dolphin productions, and it comes to you in “from master tape” quality that almost puts you in the room with the musicians, such is the clarity of sound. It focuses on sessions that Dolphin cut for release on his Recorded In Hollywood label – although many of the sessions were left in the can for decades, until Billy Vera (this set’s sleeve note writer) first dug through the crates to use some of the tracks on Dolphin-related compilations made for Specialty many years back. Ace’s purchase of the Dolphin masters has given us access to many more tapes than Billy was able to find. Where I’ve included tracks that Billy used on earlier compilations, I’ve selected different takes to give the long time fan the best possible value for money.

In the words of Max Miller, it’s “all good stuff, lady” (and gent…). Dolphin’s most famous instore DJ, Huggy Boy, introduces a programme that’s chock-full of stellar West Coast R&B talent, from esse Belvin, Marvin Phillips, Scat Man Crothers to the unfairly obscure Little Esther soundalike Maggie Jacquet (no relation to Russell and Illinois as far as we know), all backed up by a swingingly tight little combo under the direction of ever-present Dolphin session leader, Red Callender. If cool Rhythm & Blues from the West Coast is your thing, you will find that it don’t get any better than this! Watch out for an upcoming Ace CD that features the complete Dolphin, Modern and Downey recordings of one of its star turns, the great Harry “Little” Caesar. ~Tony Rounce

Classic recordings done between 1930-1935.

While never a contemporary superstar or latter-day legend on a par with many of his peers, singer/pianist Walter Davis was among the most prolific blues performers to emerge from the pre-war St. Louis scene, cutting over 150 sides between 1930 and 1952. Born March 1, 1912 in Grenada, Mississippi, Davis' two-fisted piano style bore the heavy influence of Leroy Carr, although he was better known for his funereal vocal style. He first attracted attention upon relocating to St. Louis during the mid-'20s, and soon made the first of his many recordings for the Victor label. Despite its abundance, his work -- much of it recorded in conjunction with guitarist Henry Townsend -- was solid but unspectacular, eclipsed by the likes of associates including Roosevelt Sykes and Peetie Wheatstraw. Still, he enjoyed a fair amount of success before a stroke prompted him to move from music to the ministry during the early '50s. Davis was still preaching at the time of his death on October 22, 1963. ~bio by Jason Ankeny

The sounds Kerry creates from his vintage, stock and custom made guitars are as unique as his song writing and original melodies. Kerry was voted "Best Guitarist of 1999" by the LI Voice and “Bluesman of the Year 2004” by the LI Blues Society. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Long Island Sound Award (L.I.S.A.) from the LI Music Hall of Fame and most recently, in 2013, he and his band mates were each inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame. He has toured nationally and internationally with the Allman Brothers Band and Dickey Betts, and has performed with such contemporaries as Sonny Landreth and Robert Randolf. Most recently, Kerry and his band shared the stage with the great BB King at the NYCB Westbury Theater and at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, NY.

Lil' Band O' Gold resurrected swamp pop tradition while putting its own stamp on the rock music coming out of Southwest Louisiana. The nine-piece supergroup, consisting of singer/guitarist C.C. Adcock, singer/accordionist Steve Riley, singer/pianist David Egan, saxists Dickie Landry, David Greely, and Pat Breaux, bassist Dave Ronson, pedal-steel guitarist Richard Comeaux, and legendary drummer Warren Storm, rarely performed outside its home base in Lafayette, LA, because of its members' commitments to other bands. However, appearances at Midsummer Nights Swing at Lincoln Center Plaza in New York City in 2000 and concerts at the Crawfish Festival in Stanhope, NJ, and at Swamp Stomp at Wolf Trap in Virginia in 2001 exposed the group to an audience outside its home state of Louisiana.

Adcock co-founded the band with Riley in 1998 during Monday night jams at the Swampwater Saloon in Lafayette, LA. The two friends dreamed up the idea for the group during a late-night meal of pork chop sandwiches at the famous Maison Creole restaurant in Lafayette. Both wanted to revisit the honky tonk sounds of their swamp pop heroes from the '50s, '60s, and '70s. Legendary drummer Warren Storm, who had performed with Slim Harpo, Lazy Lester, and Lightnin' Slim in the '50s, became the centerpiece and drawing card for the rest of the group. Storm was known in the region for his string of solo hits and for his session work with Dale & Grace, Freddy Fender, and John Fogerty. With Storm on board, there was no problem for Adcock and Riley to attract other notable musicians to the group. Before joining Lil' Band O' Gold, Adcock performed as a solo musician and released a self-titled CD on Island Records in addition to producing and performing with Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, which included David Greely. Warren Storm continued to play at the Four Seasons Lodge in rural Louisiana. Dickie Landry, who had performed with Talking Heads, Laurie Anderson, and Philip Glass, returned to his parish roots in the group. David Egan, who doubled as one of the group's songwriters, continued to perform in File. Percy Sledge, Joe Cocker, and Irma Thomas have covered his songs. Dave Ranson continued to play with slide guitarists Sonny Landreth and John Hiatt. Pat Breaux, who had recorded with Storm and who continued to perform in Beausoleil, saw the group as a throwback to his years as an R&B player. Pedal-steel guitarist Richard Comeaux, who was also a member of River Road, an Acadian-based country act, brought another spirit to the group.

Lil' Band O' Gold recasted traditional Cajun rockers into roadhouse boogie with the help of a dynamite rhythm section and the St. Martin's Horns on its 2000 self-titled debut CD on Shanachie Records. The band revved up "Parlez Nous a Boire (Let's Talk About Drinkin')," written by Cajun pioneer Dewey Balfa, after revisiting "Shirley," originally done by John Fred & the Playboys. Its version of "7 Letters," which was a hit for Warren Storm in the '50s, showed a slow balladic side of the group. Rockabilly from the '40s and '50s got the call on the band's remake of Moon Mulligan's "7 Nights to Rock." "Allons Rock 'N Roll," a Cajun rocker made famous by Lawrence Walker, who pioneered the cross-pollination of rhythm & blues and swing with Cajun music, epitomized the band's efforts to embrace all kinds of music from its heritage. ~Robert Hicks

Luke Escombe is a singer-songwriter, comedian and speaker who works in entertainment, health and education. He has performed for three years in a row at Parliament House in Canberra, as well as at the New Zealand National Museum in Wellington, the 2012 and 2014 National Medicines Symposiums, the 2013 Pharmacy Australia Congress, and at conferences, workshops, support groups and nursing homes across the country. He is an ambassador for Crohn's and Colitis Australia and a Champion of Australian Pain Management, and the proud winner of a 2011 competition on radio station Mix 106.5FM to find "Sydney's sexiest man voice"

Earlier in 2014 Luke simultaneously released his first feature length DVD "Chronic Symphonic" along with 18-track live album "Live on the Coast". Reviewing these albums in the Sydney Morning Herald critic John Shand wrote: “Luke Escombe is funny and brave, a showman and an artist, a brilliantly engaging lyricist, expert tunesmith, fine guitarist and exceptional singer. Seldom is such sophistication wrapped in a coating of such overt fun. Buy both. Hear him"

Stan Webb/Chicken Shack - Going Up, Going Down: The Anthology 1968-2001 (2-Disc Set)

Going Up, Going Down is a double-disc set on the Castle label focusing on Chicken Shack singer and guitarist Stan Webb. The first disc captures the early days of his British electric blues band when the lineup included future Fleetwood Mac keyboardist Christine Perfect (pre-McVie). Their earliest repertoire, made up of electric blues cover versions, is reflected through both studio recordings and various live gigs, with fundamentally decent takes of "Everyday I Have the Blues," "Tell Me," "San Ho Zay," "I'm Tore Down," "I'd Rather Go Blind," and "He Knows the Rules."

The second disc is a bit more interesting as the band progresses into a harder and louder guitar-driven unit, utilizing Webb's original songs, which have more in common with Paul Rodgers and Free than the previous incarnations did with classic electric blues. Unfortunately, the two live tracks are the weakest on the second disc; "Back Door Man" gets bogged down with pseudo-Hendrix wah-wah pedal hysterics, and the second reading of "Tell Me" is perfunctory. At 36 tracks, Going Up, Going Down may be too much for the novice, but the collector will certainly find this of interest. ~Al Campbell

In recording "Devil Got My Mind" I thought it best to keep the production minimal. I used an old analog tape machine and set my equipment up in the studio as if it were a live show. I wanted to create a record that had a raw delta feel to it. I felt the songs would be best served that way. For instrumentation I used my old Gibson es-125 semi-hollow body guitar, a custom built late '50's Fender Deluxe tweed amp and a homemade stomp board with a tamborine duct taped to it for percussion. On "Amazing Grace" I used a Gibson Dobro. All the songs were recorded live to tape with no over dubbing or special effects. I hope you enjoy it! ~Jeff Lasley

[2:43] 10. I Hear The Love Chimes

This second of three underrated releases for Hi finds Syl Johnson slowly but surely transforming from a credulous loser into a standup guy no one messes around with. Diamond in the Rough could be viewed as a creative bridge between the slightly formulaic Hi approach of 1973's Back for a Taste of Your Love and the more bluesy and rewarding Total Explosion from 1975. Different from the southern soul belter which distinguished fellow Hi second leaguers Otis Clay and O.V. Wright, Johnson's unique feat lies in his earnest yet sometimes ironic take on love and relationships. Exemplary are "Keeping Down Confusion" with its rolling organ and "Don't Do It," where the singer drives home the ultimate cliché of "I was just doing my job/Working overtime," convincing listeners of wrongfully being accused of cheating on his better half. Singing at the top of his register unintentionally added to Johnson's well-timed delivery and was perfected for Total Explosion's closing track "That's Just My Luck." Not a dry eye in the house as Johnson's seemingly guilty conscious ("What am I doing here/With another man's wife/I'm shaking in fear/But I'm having the time of my life/I'm a fool/To put myself in jeopardy/But I can't help myself/She makes sweet love to me") makes for an adultery song which holds up with the likes of Don Covay's "I Was Checkin' out She Was Checkin' in." Diamond in the Rough has its own surprises, for instance in the minor R&B chart success of "I Want to Take You Home to See Mama." Initially coming on too joyfully honest for its own good, its credibility easily supersedes Al Green's "Let's Get Married." As ballads like the unfairly overlooked first single "Please Don't Give up on Me" stand out, the albums best song remains the driving "Stuck in Chicago." The only song not written by Willie Mitchell and his gang, it paved the way for Total Explosion's tougher approach where the former Chicago bluesman would let it loose on his harmonica. His reading of "Take Me to the River" gave the author and Hi superstar he was often compared to a run for his money. Like Big Mouth Billy Bass miming the song to Tony Soprano in one of the television series' episodes, Johnson did have the last laugh as "getting stuck in Chicago" would lead to his biggest hit. ~Quint Kik

Monti Amundson - 2 albums: Man On The Floor / Prove Me Wrong

His name is Monti Amundson but most people call him Big Monti. Not just because of the man’s physical appearance, but also because of his obvious talent and sheer presence. When Big Monti takes the stage, it’s clear that there’s more going on than the usual extended guitar solos – the man plays and sings larger than life.

When Monti gets compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan or Johnny Winter he just says “thank you.” The fact is, the big man has his own style. “I’m a blues guitar player in a band that plays rock n’ roll,” is how Monti explains it. He doesn’t so much as straddle the line between the genres as bend it, ignore it, or race back and forth across it until both sides go up in flames. The blues of Big Monti comes straight from the heart, cuts through your soul and is as real as it gets.

It seems almost too easy to say a record was “a lifetime in the making,” but in the case of Paul Rodgers’ The Royal Sessions, it’s more than poetic metaphor or press hype; it’s a genuine statement of fact.

In the mid ‘60s, before this singer/songwriter founded Free, Bad Company or The Firm with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, Rodgers was a teen band singer in Middlesbrough, England besotted with vinyl 45s from America: hot new R&B sides from Memphis labels like Stax/Volt, Goldwax and later Hi Records. Spinning the records over and over, Rodgers would imagine how the artists and singers created such momentous sounds and wonder about the places they came from.

Flash forward to 2013: Paul Rodgers is at South Memphis’ Royal Studios, recording those familiar old songs with many of the same players who had graced the original tracks. The session almost seemed fated. Rodgers had been working on an album of original rock material with his friend and musical collaborator Perry A. Margouleff. In late 2012, Margouleff was visiting Memphis where he was tipped to Royal Studios, the historic home of late producer Willie Mitchell and Hi Records. For over 40 years, Royal has remained a thriving recording hub where artists come take advantage of the vintage gear, old-school wisdom, and sheer magic of the room. They’ve also utilized the talents of the native players, foremost among them the stalwarts of the famed Hi Rhythm Section, built around the Hodges Brothers. Still turning out remarkable records and performances today, Royal Studios has become the last great resource for those truly seeking the real thing.

The result of Paul Rodgers’ pilgrimage to this musical Mecca is a deeply felt, powerfully sung and expertly played collection. Featuring a cross-section of material handpicked by Rodgers, it surveys a wide landscape of American R&B, offering fresh takes on the fatback blues of Albert King, the gutbucket balladry of Otis Redding, the sophisticated stirrings of Issac Hayes and a host of other classics from the Southern soul canon.

Working in the old-school style, everything was recorded on analogue tape, with the basic tracks – including Rodgers’ vocals – all cut live on the floor with the band. Unaware of Rodgers’ history or reputation, the veteran session men were surprised when he chose to kick off the session with a pass at Redding’s iconic “That’s How Strong My Love Is.” After Rodgers nailed the song in a single scintillating take, organist Charles Hodges took him aside and said admiringly, “Man, you’ve really got this in you. You can really do this.”

James Peterson - 2 albums: Too Many Knots / Preachin' The Blues

Alabama-born and Florida-based guitarist, singer, and songwriter James Peterson played a gritty style of Southern-fried blues at times reminiscent of Howlin' Wolf and other times more along the lines of Freddie King. He formed his first band while he was living in Buffalo, New York and running the Governor's Inn House of Blues in the 1960s. He and his band would back up the traveling musicians who came through, including blues legends like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Big Joe Turner, Freddie King, Lowell Fulson, and Koko Taylor.

Peterson was born November 4, 1937 in Russell County, Alabama. Peterson was strongly influenced by gospel music in the rural area he grew up in, and he began singing in church as a child. Thanks to his father's juke joint, he was exposed to blues at an early age, and later followed in his footsteps in upstate New York. After leaving home at age 14, he headed to Gary, Indiana, where he sang with his friend John Scott. While still a teen, he began playing guitar, entirely self-taught. Peterson cited musicians like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf (Chester Burnett), Jimmy Reed, and B.B. King as his early role models. After moving to Buffalo in 1955, he continued playing with various area blues bands, and ten years later he opened his own blues club.

In 1970, Peterson recorded his first album, The Father, the Son, the Blues on the Perception/Today label. While he ran his blues club at night, he supplemented his income by running a used-car lot during the day. Peterson's debut album was produced and co-written with Willie Dixon, and it featured a then-five-year-old Lucky Peterson on keyboards. Peterson followed it up with Tryin' to Keep the Blues Alive a few years later. Peterson's other albums included Rough and Ready and Too Many Knots for the Kingsnake and Ichiban labels in 1990 and 1991, respectively.

The album that put Peterson back on the road as a national touring act was 1995's Don't Let the Devil Ride for the Jackson, Mississippi-based Waldoxy Records. Throughout the '90s and up to the mid-2000s, Peterson was also an active live presence on the Tampa, Florida blues scene, and the 2000s also saw Peterson record another duo album with son Lucky, 2004's If You Can't Fix It on the JSP label. Peterson returned to Alabama in the mid-2000s, and died of a heart attack there on December 12, 2010. A master showman who learned from the best and knew how to work an audience, James Peterson left a legacy not only as an accomplished blues guitarist, but also as a crafty songwriter endowed with a deep, gospel-drenched singing style. ~bio by Richard Skelly

A barrelhouse piano player whose approach to the blues was full of drive, bounce, and joy, Roosevelt Sykes recorded his signature tune, Lee Green's "44 Blues," at his debut studio date in 1929, which had been arranged for him by St. Louis record shop owner Jesse Johnson. Sykes never looked back, practicing his own brand of joyous boogie piano while spanning the pre- and post-war generations, and he enjoyed a remarkable surge in popularity late in his career, touring the music festivals on several continents and releasing albums. This set, which has been released countless times on several different labels, including Blues Alliance, Blue Labor, Tomato, and Rhino, and now on Fat Possum, was recorded at a session on September 17, 1975, with guitarists Johnny Shines and Louisiana Red, and the harmonica-playing Sugar Blue to help out on some of the tracks. The results, in all honesty, are mixed, but as an example of what it means to put some veteran blues musicians together and cut an album in one day, it's a minor little archival gem. Sykes, unlike many artists, was always best solo, and there are several solo tracks here, all full of the bouncing, buoyant piano playing that made Sykes one of a kind. In the end, it's a fun and interesting set, wherever one picks it up. ~Steve Leggett

Born in 1942 and afflicted with the need to Boogie by age three, I have always been drawn to jump up music and to lyrics with something other than the mundane to say. I describe myself as a songwriter / singer because I write better than I sing, and I have been writing songs for nearly 60 years. I am father to four amazing children, two boys, two girls; and it was at their suggestion that I started the songwriting and recording project of a lifetime...an anthology and musical memoir. In that process I have begun to write again, and I am including both revived and recent compositions in my collection.

I grew up in Atlanta before it became the city it is today, and I was influenced early on by Black Gospel families like the Franklins and the Staples. Soon after I fell under the spell of the early blues men and women, and crossover R&B artists like Ray Charles. The cross genre styles that characterize my music can be traced first to them and later to my regional exposure to country gospel, country blues, and mountain music / bluegrass influences. The exposure and impact continued up through Folk, Rock, and other styles that caught my fancy across those years. My ability to be influenced and guided by the work of others continues today.

Parenting and "day job" responsibilities kept my career as a performing musician either dormant of sporadic across my midlife years. That was as I planned it, and I have no complaints. It was near my eventual retirement from a 34 year career as a special educator that I slipped and slid back into the performing arena with the formation of The DaddyO's Band, a working Blues and R&B cover band that soon began performing the old and new tunes that we put together as I group. We kept it going for 14 years. Known at that time as Dr. DaddyO, I fronted that group as lead vocalist and primary writer. Age and health issues finally put up roadblocks the we could not work around, but some of that crew has transitioned with me into the present project push. That experience has proven to be my training ground for the present work at hand.
