Nathan James is well-known for his work with James Harman, who took him under his wings and on the road when he was only very young. What would Nathan’s mother have said when James stood on the doorstep asking if he could do so? Sadly, Judy James passed away not long ago, so she is unable to tell the story. Nathan dedicated his new album "Intuition" to his mother. The title refers to a lesson his mom taught him, namely to trust it always. Ten all original songs on this album. Nathan almost literally did everything to create the music; drums, percussion, bass, double bass, guitars, hammond, banjo, mixing and mastering. Oh yeah, and he sings too, made the album cover himself and put it out on his Scared Cat Recordings label. By the way, he builds his own guitars too. Incredible. Ross Garren added additional keys and harmonica and Carl Sonny Leyland plays piano on two songs.

Fans who know Nathan from his work with James Harman and Kim Wilson might be a bit surprised here. Nathan is an excellent blues player, but his solo work is so much more than that. It is American roots music created by a temporary musician. His songs are personal and his production is a blend of old-school and modern sound engineering. After the pandemic, due to a series of life changes (including the passing away of his mother) Nathan relocated from the Southern California coast to the heart of the San Jacinto Mountains. Here, he found solace and new inspiration for new music the result of which you hear on this album. /Pascal Wilhelm, Bluestown Music

Nathan James is a true original American roots music artist who makes a lot of sound pickin' and scratchin' on his handmade invention of washboard guitar; stomping out time on a box made of old fence boards; all while singing and blowing harmonica to his own original music. But aside from all of these tools of the trade, his main focus is well crafted songwriting and his artistry is far from just a live show gimmick.

Drawing from a deep well of influences from many early roots artists and styles, James was quickly attracted to the individuality of self made music and artistic expression from an early age. Growing up in the small agricultural town of Fallbrook California has been influential in choosing his life path because he could relate to music originating from a rural environment. "There wasn't a lot to do here, so you either got in trouble or found something productive to do with what you had around you!" Having supportive parents that didn't force him into college after high school allowed Nathan to go straight into the real world of a ‘working musician’. At age 19 Nathan got the call from internationally known blues veteran James Harman to join his band and tour the country. With Harman is where he gained the experience that has shaped most of his own career.

In 2007 Nathan entered the International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN with Ben Hernandez and took 1st place. During his career Nathan has worked with other many well known artists including: Kim Wilson, Pinetop Perkins, Billy Boy Arnold, Lazy Lester, Johnny Dyer, Rick Holmstrom, and Mark Hummel. Nathan has brought his music to concerts and festivals in Argentina, Russia, Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Faroe Islands, Taiwan, Canada and Mexico, as well as all over the United States.

11 Nathan James, Víctor Puertas - Come What May (3:19)
12 Jens Turowski, Gary Winters, Tommy Schneller - Give Me My Heart Back (3:03)

This may be an authentic-sounding blues CD but it has emerged in a most unusual way courtesy of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting social distancing and lockdown of normal activities, including live music and recording. As a result German-based British harmonica player Roger C. Wade got these tracks together with artists from eight countries sending their contributions via the internet. In fact some of the musicians had never actually met the people they are playing with! Roger first contacted other German blues players like guitarist Kai Strauss and saxophonist Tommy Schneller but then also added artists from the UK, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Finland and France. He then followed this by getting contributions from several top American players including Larry Garner, Fred Kaplan, Nathan James, Aki Kumar and Big Daddy Wilson.

There is a great variety of styles here from the jump blues of the opener 'Lockdown Blues' - "Strange times we live in, just keep keeping to yourself" to the Chicago band blues of 'Can't Get Too Close' and 'Personal Shutdown' which also both tell lockdown stories - "I've got to love my baby from six feet away..." Abi Wallenstein & Roger Wade do a nice acoustic cover of Son House's very appropriate 'Death Letter Blues' and there is more nice acoustic blues from Little Victor and Kai Strauss, with Black Patti and US harp star Joe Filisko closing the first CD with the low down and dirty 'Be Ready When He Comes'. CD2 starts with a bang with Larry Garner and company, Tommy Schneller blows a nice bluesy instrumental and Christian Bleiming plays beautiful boogie boogie piano. Big Daddy Wilson contributes some soulful gospel, as does the wonderful Veronica Sbergia on 'I Can Tell The World'. And the quality carries on right to the last tracks courtesy of Aki Kumar and Nathan James and especially Jens Turowski whose closing track 'Give Me My Heart Back' is one of the collections' many highlights. Roger deserves much praise for getting this collection of tracks together it is completely successful and I hope that it makes lots of money for the musicians involved. ~G.E. Harrison

“Swingin’ In Space” is the debut album from the veteran Southern California based bass player, (the enigmatic) Tyler Pedersen. He has been heard playing with William Clarke, Johnny Dyer, Kid Ramos and San Pedro Slim, and many of the California based blues bands. In 2016, Pedersen emerges with an eleven song program of alt-swing instrumentals produced by Nathan James at his studio in Oceanside, California. All songs were written and arranged by Pedersen who wields a four string guitar, ala Tiny Grimes. As the album title implies, this album is full of some super swinging and adventurous material. Guitar romps, along with interesting and unusual performances by the entire band insure an intriguing set of tunes all along the way. On his first release Pedersen showcases his talent on 4 string guitar, as well as featuring the multi talented Nathan James. This all instrumental set has some hard swinging guitar romps along with interesting and unusual performances by the entire band. -- Dwm & Bluebeat.

[3:33] 11. When Tomorrow Comes

Americana has many different ingredients and Nathan James knows how to mix just the right amounts to create his own signature flavor. ‘What I Believe’ is a showcase of years of experience in self production and songwriting and it is his first album featuring 100% original material. From the opening track ‘You Got to Please Me’ with it’s Bill Withers inspired acoustic rhythm guitar and funky drums featuring tasteful layering of fuzz guitar and B3 organ to the acoustic soul meets spy movie sound track moodiness of ‘Down on the Road’ with classical string arrangements, there are many twists and turns for the listener to behold. ‘Tryin’ to Get Along With Myself’ is a songwriting standout with it’s telling of personal turmoil turned to hope with the start of new day. This song is true Americana with a mixture of gospel changes and country pedal steel inspired slide guitar.

In this day and age with unspeakable events and political corruption happening the world over, ‘In the News Today’ explains why we are better off not obsessively staying connected to current events. The mood is set to a funeral dirge beat with the moaning cry of blues veteran James Harman’s harmonica with soul jazz hammond organ by Rafael Salmon and ‘chicago blues meets swing’ guitar. There are many other guests lending their talents including the great Kim Wilson playing harmonica in a folky acoustic style not often heard by him on ‘Give To Understand’. Nathan’s longtime trio, the Rhythm Scratchers, is featured on ‘Silent Treatment’, the album’s solid blues number. The rollicking instrumental ‘Bonsai Sequoia’ is a dedication to the gargantuan Sequoia tree that graces the album’s front and back covers and features all of Nathan’s different home made Washbaord guitars. The album ends on a meaningful positive note with ‘When Tomorrow Comes’- transitioning from a string band lullaby with harmonies to a soul ballad duet featuring R&B vocal great Missy Andersen.

Straight from the powerful opening cut ‘Don’t Forget it’, this duo of Nathan James and Ben Hernandez tell you that they know exactly what they’re doing with their huge original sound that they have created and made their own. Packed with an array of textures and spices all placed in their right spots, this Album closely represents what this team does live. Each song transports you to a different place with each perfect formula of tones, and rhythmic placements. If you have witnessed this talented duo live then you can believe that they can make all this sound at once, between the two of them. No drummer here, but the persistent fancy foot work of James, working his vintage suitcase. The back beat done with his own invention, the coffee can foot snare. Efficiency and simplicity enable him to travel on their many road excursions with his clothes packed in this dual purpose tool! When it’s time to really “ kill” the audience with something rarely seen or heard, Hernandez will pull out his 2 gallon whiskey jug to blow into adding yet another layer of low end funk to the game- as demonstrated on the tune ‘My Backyard’. Giving the people what they want, but in the artists own originality, is how each live show ends when Hernandez goes from a church revival meeting to pick up the washtub bass, as James takes over vocal and harmonica duties, accented with masterful delta slide guitar work. This couldn’t be displayed better then on the cut ‘My Special Rider’, a song cut completely live just as performed in front of a crowd.

Having a major focus on what any soulful music should have, this album showcases many honest vocal performances, and original songs throughout. Staying true to their acoustic roots, is the folk ballad ‘Lonesome Hobo Blues’, penned by Hernandez and sang in a breathy almost spoken tone. This tune is a chosen for great contrast and diversity to a tune like ‘Hollerin’!’, the albums high voltage electric title track, with real juke joint crowd noise captured from one of the duo’s sit in’s during the night of their International Blues Challenge win in Memphis TN! Another trademark and strong point is the harmony singing these two pull of so well. This is done on several cuts including the love song waltz penned by James entitled ‘Sweet Mama’. the singers take turns backing each other up with vocal support as Hernandez does on this tune. For the closing cut is a true gem with the accapella Hernandez gospel song ‘Can’t Wait For That Glory Day’, with James answering harmonies to his partner’s expression of his true belief in salvation! The listener can really feel the soul being captured into the one ribbon mic placed in a small room on this cut as the duo Nathan James & Ben Hernandez gives the final touch to their abilities on this album, ‘Hollerin!’, released on their own label, Sacred Cat Recordings.

On 'Make a Change Sometime'the first official duo album by Nathan James & Ben Hernandez, these two young & talented artists bring forward a fresh and knowledgable showcase of an American roots music known as country blues. Within the 16 cuts filled with both traditional and original songs, they cover all the styles including: delta, piedmont, gospel, string band, and jug band country blues. As an extension of the variety of instruments palyed in their live show, the album features the added textures of piano by Gene Taylor, fiddle by Sara Watkins, and Vocals and harp by James Harman, on selected cuts. The result is a vast change in dynamics, and moods throughout the album that keeps the listener interested, and on their toes. Nathan James fully utilizes to great advantage the use of several different sounding guitars to create different tones, and timbres; as well as many different approaches to playing them to compliment each songs feel. Also listeners will keep their feet moving to the beat of Jame's foot percussion played on most of the cuts. Ben Hernandez lends his talents on several different unique instruments including: harmonica, jazz kazoo, spoons, jug and washtub bass. With vocals and songwriting equally split between James & Hernandez, 'Make a Change Sometime' is sure to make a mark as a well rounded, timeless classic album for this genre.
With various tools of the trade; during a live show an audience may not know what to expect. During one song, James may be laying down a hypnotic delta rhythm on a National resonator slide guitar, stomping out his foot in time on his percussion board; while Hernandez is singing like a Sunday morning baptist preacher, and chugging a trian whistle sound on his harmonica. A next song could be James creating a ragtime jump on guitar as Hernandez coaxes a jazzy melody on the Kazoo, or bassline on the jug or the washtub bass; as the two sing a timeless song in harmony. Meanwhile all of this never failing to grab anyones attention, and forces smiles, applause, and even dancing feet to all lucky enough to experience. Night after night, this is how Nathan James & Ben Hernandez carve out a living for themselves.

Ben Hernandez (harmonica, vocals, kazoo, jug, washtub bass, spoons) is a naturally gifted vocalist/ harmonica player who is quickly gaining praise from southern California's most critical blues aficionados, and blues veterans. Now still in his twenties; Hernandez has come up singing since before he can remember. During which, he has led his own bands including Brickyard Jones, and the Double Fives, with whom he has performed with all over the state of California. His musical influences include such legends as: Sonny Terry, Peg Leg Sam, Sonny Boy Williamson #1, Hammie Nixon, and Noah Lewis, to name a few.

Nathan James (guitar, vocals, foot percussion, harmonica) has become a well recognized blues guitarist in Southern California, as the guitarist for the internationally known James Harman Band. During his last five or so years with the band, James has honed his chops with seasoned veteran Harman, touring and recording. Also still in his twenties, James has released a solo record 'This Road is Mine', with guest performances by James Harman, and Ben Hernandez; on the Pacific Blues Recording Company label. Six song EP featuring Jamie Wood, Martin Gagnon, Nathan James, Bill Stuve, Troy Jennings and Marty Dodson. Recorded at Sacred Cat Recording Studio, Mixed at Pacifica Recording Studio, Mastered at Lou Hemsey Music and Film.

While Jamie’s sound has evolved over the years to include Chicago, Kansas City and West Coast blues, today her sound is very much her own. Her style is firmly rooted in blues, with a rhythm section reminiscent of the small swing combos of the 30's and 40's. One might say it's a marriage of blues, 40's jazz and post-war swing. In collaboration with her husband, pianist Martin Gagnon, they have formed a brand new ensemble – Jamie Wood & Daddy-O.

Jamie's southern heritage, together with her stage charisma, make her a natural at blues and all its dialects. Her influences include Ella Mae Morse, Ernestine Anderson, Anita O'Day, Big Mama Thorton, Dinah Washington, Helen Humes, Julia Lee, Jimmy Rushing and Louis Jordan, just to name a few.

Nathan James - 2 albums: Hear Me Calling / Natural Born That Way

Never one to follow convention, and always one to think for himself, Nathan James has created a musical identity with his homemade instruments and self taught skills. Whether you catch Nathan James as his true one man band pickin' and scratchin' on his own invention of washboard guitar, stomping out time on his custom suitcase drum set while singing and blowing harmonica or kazoo; or leading his new trio, you are sure to be moved and impressed with the unique energy and soul that he possesses. Nathan James is a well respected and experienced artist in his field. For 15 years now, he has successfully made his living touring and recording, solely specializing on his passion of blues, and American roots music. Starting his career of full time gigging musician at age 18, Nathan is no stranger to live performance.

Currently Nathan’s three piece band is forging a cumulative sound that combines elements of 1920's acoustic blues, amplified juke joint hill country, and 1950's uptown blues mixed with 1960's soulful R&B! Influences range from Tampa Red, to B.B. King, to James Brown and the Famous Flames. This is not your average blues power trio that leans towards the much abused "blues rock" formula. Instead each member in the band knows all the nuances of the different feels and tones. Knowing how to get people's attention, Nathan will often go out solo from the bandstand and burst into a frenzied ragtime breakdown that can lead to a washboard solo on his custom LED lit 'Washtar Gitboard'! Another unique aspect of a live show is band mate Troy Sandow. He may start off the set on upright bass while Nathan will play an uptown lead guitar style in the vein of B.B. or T-bone Walker. Then he will switch over to amplified harmonica and Nathan will fingerpick a driving groove on his baritone guitar in the style of R.L. Burnside or Lightnin' Hopkins. Although Nathan's band pays homage to these traditions and has the same quality of musicianship, there is an original and fresh new energy coming from musicians of a much younger generation.

Since moving to Southern California less than a year ago, twenty four year old Jon Atkinson has made a big splash on our Nation’s western shore. Atkinson is a man of immense talent, drive and determination. He has established himself as an in demand sideman, as he can play virtually any instrument. Big Jon also possesses that increasingly elusive commodity, the ability to sing the blues.

He has been spotted up and down the Southern California coast from Ventura to San Diego playing harp, guitar, bass or drums as well as singing with a couple of generations of blues luminaries including James Harman, Al Blake and Kim Wilson. He has recorded an album with Mark Mumea’s Silver Kings and recently completed this, his first solo album, Boogie With You Baby on Bluebeat Music.

Boogie With You Baby was recorded with another extremely gifted musician, Nathan James. James’ Sacred Cat studio in the Northern San Diego County enclave of Oceanside is where Big Jon surrounded himself with big talent such as pianist Fred Kaplan and James’ Rhythm Scratchers’ bassist Troy Sandow and drummer Marty Dodson. Two and half days after walking into the studio, Atkinson and company had a fourteen song gem. Atkinson even wrote three of the selections here.

The originals fit nicely with some of the most obscure diamonds in the rough I have ever heard. Songs by Lightnin’ Slim, Jon Brim, Billy Boy Arnold, Junior Wells, J.B. Hutto and others are re-imagined and given a confident, relaxed feel that stay true to the original sound. These recordings could sit right alongside the originals (if you could find them), some of which I don’t even have in my library. For example, Jon found a Muddy Waters original that is nowhere to be found in my 22 album collection on Muddy. Atkinson can quickly add the title “The Indiana Jones of the Blues” to his resume’ for digging up these buried treasures.

For this, his first album, Big Jon Atkinson chose not to feature his guitar playing, which is also exceptional. He, instead, is heard singing and playing harmonica and doing so with verve and style. The guitar duties, save one track, are in the very capable hands of Nathan James. James eschewed his custom made “Washtars” for this outing and sticks with more traditional axes, a ‘59 Fender Jazz Master and a Gibson ES 175.

The addition of Fred Kaplan is a welcome treat. He plays piano on four tracks giving these numbers an extra dynamic and helps to enhance the old timey feel of the album. The consummate rhythm section of Sandow and Dotson is first rate.

The debut album of Big Jon Atkinson is cause for celebration which can commence soon as the CD is scheduled for a mid May release. Boogie With You Baby receives my highest recommendation. ~David Mac

Nathan James - I Don't Know It

Art: Full

01. No Baby Don't (4:40)

04. I Don't Know It (3:59)

08. Send You Back Home (4:03)
09. Undecided Woman Blues (4:12)
10. Wayfaring Stranger (5:58)
11. Pain And Waiting (2:04)

On this stellar release ‘I Don’t Know It’ from Nathan James, you can really hear an artist come into his own on these 8 original, and 3 classic tunes. What you get is a seamless variety of styles and settings ranging from one man and his National resonator bottleneck guitar, to amplified juke joint dance music, and back to fingerstyle acoustic folk blues.
With all these different but related influences, James has molded his own sound that is both old timey and a fresh new approach. On the title track ‘I Don’t Know it’ (track 4) you can really dig this original sound performed by his live three piece band. It features the Mississippi Hill Country inspired riff on a plugged in resonator guitar. The inventive ‘hand clap’ back beat drumming is played by veteran Marty Dodson whom has toured extensively for years with Mark Hummel, and John Nemeth. The tasteful and toneful harmonica is played by multi-instrumentalist Troy Sandow whom also plays upright bass in the band and on the Magic Sam classic ‘Easy Baby’ (track 7).
Also being a talented multi-instrumentalist, James layers the album with his own drumming, upright bass, and banjo playing which can be heard on the string band classics: ‘Too Long’ (track 5), and mandolin on ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ (track 10). The guitar boogie ‘Send You Back Home’ (track 8) features James as a true live “one man band”- playing guitar, rack harmonica, and drums with his feet simultaneously!
Once again Nathan James is joined on record with long time musical mentor and legend James Harman on ‘My Last Nerve’ (track 6). One day while Nathan was tracking Harman’s harmonica parts for a new Z.Z. Top record at his own Sacred Cat Studios, the two had a break while Billy Gibbons was back in Texas preparing the next song to email for harmonica to be added to. So without wasting any time, the two quickly worked up a James Harman original and had it finished recording just as the next Z.Z. Top song was done traveling through cyberspace!
With one other solo album and 3 other joint efforts under his belt and over 12 years of performing and touring for a living, Nathan has developed his own voice among those before him in this rich tradition of Blues and American Roots music. This album is sure to be joined into the ranks as a timeless, heartfelt expression of an artist doing what his biggest passion is, and listeners can easily acknowledge how much soul and energy was put into it’s creation!!
