Mixed and mastered by GRAMMY award winning engineer Brian D Hardin (GnR, Jerry Lee Lewis).

Musicians featured on this release include Raymond Johnson on drums (Michael Henderson, Jackiem Joyner), Robert McDonald on bass and backing vocal (Johnny Guitar Watson, Norman Brown), Paulie Cerra on saxophone, Hammond B3 organ, and Wurlitzer piano (Joe Bonamassa, Keb Mo'), and Niomisha Wilson on backing vocals.

This exciting release follows Jones' 2020 album Soft Hard & Loud, which spent over two months in the top 20 on the Blues and Rock Blues charts.

Jones' songs on ABOUT TIME are introspective, encouraging personal growth and connection, and yet still edgy and fun.

Dennis Jones - Soft Hard & Loud

Size: 95,4 MB

04. Front Door Man (4:34)
05. Nothin' On You (4:06)

09. I'm Not (5:24)
10. Burn The Plantation Down (3:39)

Upon returning from another successful European tour with his power trio, L.A.-based guitarist Dennis Jones dove headlong into songwriting for his seventh album. The stalwart singer songwriter and guitar gunslinger crafted another set of tunes showcasing his musical dexterity and poignant worldview. The title references the dynamic range of the trio, who can go from a whisper to a scream, “Soft Hard and Loud.”

The sessions began in February 2020 but met with stoppages and challenges that most artists are facing in this year. Undaunted, Jones used the time to craft thought provoking lyrics and ear grabbing riffs on another energetic set of high-powered blues funky rock and super charged soul. His muscular rhythm section of Raymond Johnson on drums and bass player Cornelius Memes, who co-produced the album with Jones, blaze on every track showing off their formidable shops earned by countless hours on the road playing shows from small gin joints to colosseum seating venues. The trio invited special guests Bennett Paysinger, a keyboard monster, whose credits include Beyoncé, Snoop Dog and Demi Lovato, to drop tasty Hammond B-3 on track two, Jason Freeman on Hammond B-3 on track nine, while vocalists Michael Turner and Allison August added sweet harmonies on track five.

Jones early aspirations as a drummer shine through on the tantalizing rhythms of the opening track ‘Revolves Around You,’ along with its precocious word play. The autobiographical ‘I Love The Blues’ speaks openly about his small-town roots and growing up in rural Maryland with a family that supported his musical ambitions. Jones uses an overdriven Les Paul plugged straight into an amp firing a riff over a four on the floor beat to deliver his assessment of the current state of the world on the acerbic rocker ‘Like Sheep.’ Howlin’ Wolf made the world aware of the southern phraseology, ‘Back Door Man,’ in 1960; here Jones flips that idea around on the fast moving blues ‘Front Door Man, entreating his lady to make him her number one lover. He gets romantic on the classic R&B sonnet ‘Nothing On You,’ extolling the virtues of his favorite lady like the Bard of Burbank.

Reggae has often been associated with rebel music, so with another notion to turn popular conventions on their head Jones calls for us to “All come together now, and love one another now,“ on the island anthem ‘I Hate Hate.’ A jagged Stratocaster line helps him give advice to a friend on the rocking ‘Gonna Be Alright,’ that features more of that dynamic interplay between him and the rhythm section. Heavy duty bump and grind blues ‘When I Wake Up’ is a fiery showstopper full guitar pyrotechnics, revealing Jones’ influences from Hendrix styled wah wah and Buddy Guy inspired bravado.

Taking liberty with the ‘Stormy Monday’ chord changes for another slow blues, ‘I’m Not,’ allows Jones and the crew to stretch out for a dynamic extended jam. Jones saves the bulk of his angst for the finale; guitar driven vigorous rebuke of Southern culture, ‘Burn The Plantation Down,’ exorcising the demons inside a man in bondage, struggling to set himself and his family free. Another fine effort from a hard-working showman and his team. ~Rick J Bowen

Personnel:
Dennis Jones: guitar, vocals
Sam Correa: bass, backing vocals
Raymond Johnson: drums

Maryland born, LA-based, Dennis Jones got his first guitar at thirteen: so began a love of music and, supported by his parents, he was soon performing in the local area. After serving in the military for few years, life and love took over and he got a ‘proper’ job although the music was ever present as he explored the roots of the music he had come to appreciate…Gallagher was a big influence. He got laid off from his job as an elevator technician, but that was just the lift (sorry, couldn’t resist!) he needed to move into music full-time: and so the Dennis Jones Band began their journey. With five releases under his belt, it is time now for a new album and a live one at that. The band consists of Jones on guitar and lead vocals, Sam Correa on bass and backing vocals and Raymond Johnson on drums. To record this live album, they convened at a venue known as Beaver Creek Brewery, which, apparently, is in a Montana town called Wilbaux…should you be heading that way, surely a live blues venue in a brewery cannot be bettered!

The album, called We3 Live, for reasons I am unclear on as it is not a London postcode (unless it is ‘we three’ (Kings of Orient are?!)), contains 14 tracks featuring selections from all five of Jones’ solo albums as well as a cover of the Albert King classic Born Under a Bad Sign.

Opening with Blue Over You, we can hear straightaway where and why these guys are so popular in their area. This is a funky blues that showcases Jones’ abilities as a guitarist and singer. Although fairly laid back in the Robert Cray vein, the two solos are sweet and ramp it up beyond the Cray feel the verses engender. Next up is a shuffle: When I Die, is right in SRV land and has a great plodding (in a good way) backline. The solo isn’t fluid, but it is live and sounds great with the exploration of all of the fretboard. Nearly eight minutes of Passion For The Blues is not long enough for me, as the bass and drums lay down the beat while Jones sings of all his blues heroes from Robert Johnson through BB to Etta to SRV. A couple of thoughtful, well-executed solo, without histrionics, improves this song no end and is my firm favourite. We even get a similarly crafted bass solo…not enough of them in my humble. Straight into Stray Bullet without introduction and here we get a soulful take on the blues with the guitar solo sounding a little Trower, which is no bad thing. Hot Sauce is next with a rapid backbeat and a chugging riff as Jones salutes food with hot sauces! “It’s hot going in and hot coming out!”…can’t argue with that. The solo has Hendrix’ Third Stone from the Sun references and is a blast. Don’t Worry About Me brings a slower Texas blues feel to the proceedings and has a lot of Hendrix again, with the guitar phrasing and even Jones’ voice, conjuring up the great man in a fitting and expert way. Next is a demonstration of how to fill a shuffle with swing and come out with an entertaining blues song comparing love and cars…or just the love of cars; either works on Super Deluxe. Funk is the predominant feature of Enjoy the Ride, as the bass and drums show an almost telepathic understanding during the complex backing to a Stevie Salas style piece of guitar playing. You Don’t Know a Thing About Love manages to put the blues into a samba rhythm and lace it with a bit of soul too. Kill The Pain does start a little like Black Velvet (if you please) but evolves into a heavy blues shuffle with more Hendrix inflections in his playing and singing. A brilliant solo takes the thoughts of Alannah Miles away altogether. Big Black Cat takes a left turn into jazz territory but, married with stinging guitar work throughout, it works really well. Devil’s Nightmare heads further south than expected as we end up in the Caribbean for a funk variation on the blues. More Salas references on the guitar melody, but as the guitar and bass perform the closest to a duet you are likely to find, you are transported to a different world entirely and, to top it off, the solo is superb. Penultimate song, I’m Good, is back to Texas for a solid blues-rock number with hints of Albert Collins in the phrasing. Another Albert is responsible for the album closer: Albert King’s Born Under A Bad Sign is given a Hendrix like makeover (we even get a slice of Voodoo Chile in the solo) with a deal of success. It is a great way to wrap up what must have been a hell of a night in that brewery.

This is a fine live album with so much to recommend it…yes, Jones does play the Hendrix card quite a lot both vocally and on the guitar…but then when he is this good, it can be forgiven and just enjoyed for what it is…three guys delivering a very good set of genuine and original blues. This is sufficiently good enough that I will be seeking out his previous albums for the source material here.

While still a young teenager, Jones played guitar in various blues bands in his home state. A little while later he spent some time living in Europe, developing his skills and building an admiring audience. In the mid-80s he relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he greatly expanded his audience, offering a potent mix of classic urban blues songs alongside his own compositions, which maintain the mood although dressed in powerful rock-influenced concepts.

He played with guitarist Zac Harmon’s band and others before forming his own group in the mid-90s. This blending of musical genres is reflected in the name of his company, Blue Rock Records, for which he began recording in the early 00s. Included in his band for his second album, 2005’s Passion For The Blues, were Kenny ‘Boudro’ Gray (bass) and Michael Turner (drums), while among the guests were Jimmy ‘Z’ Zavala (blues harp/saxophone), Marshall Thompson (keyboards) and Harmon. /AllMusic

12. I Can't Stop (2:47)
13. Lonely Joint (2:19)

Coming out of the gate like a drag racer with a hemi, Dennis Jones’s new album Both Sides of the Tracks starts off with an up tempo but smooth number called “Enjoy the Ride.” However, it could have just as easily been called “we’re bringing saxy back” thanks to the fantastic reed rimming skills of Jimmy Z Zavala, who in addition to the super sexy saxophone, also does some wonderful harmonica on the album. Dennis got his start performing with the Zac Harmon Band and he’s been on an upward curve since then. Backing Dennis up on the record is a beefy rhythm section of Raymond Johnson playing drums, and Dale Black on Bass, with Teddy Zigzag rolling in on the keys. Track number seven aptly named “Number Two” (what’s on second, I don’t know, third base!) keeps the album going with a swinging boogie vibe past the halfway point.

It’s the next song “Skin and Bone” that truly encapsulates the modern times we live in, and the frustration at the simple to imagine, and yet seemingly impossible to achieve goal of basic respect for one another as people. The album fades out with the acoustic unplugged track “Lonely Joint,” which is a clever ditty about a discarded joint on the ground. If you can imagine the characters from Half Baked writing a School House Rocks song about weed than you might have an inkling about how great the song sounds.

Dennis Jones is a rare gem in a sea of marbles that is the southern California blues scene and this latest album ensconced his footing into that scene. The Review: 8.5/10 ~by Jeremy Schantz

Dennis Jones may not be the most well known modern blues rock guitar slinger; but he is someone that deserves your attention. My Kinda Blues is Dennis’ fourth solo album and it can best be described as a testament to modern blues. Dennis currently tours out the LA area and prior to doing his solo work he played with Zac Harmon when he won the 2004 Blues International Challenge. Dennis can be heard on his Zac’s Live at Babe and Ricky’s CD

The title track says it best. This is “My Kinda Blues.” The album definitely pays reverence to the three “K’s” (Albert, Freddie, and B.B.); but at the same time his rock inspirations from the three “J’s” ( Jimmy Hendrix, Johnny Winter, and Jimmy Page) are evident. Like the title says it’s his kinda blues, the kind with a rock edge. ~Kevin O’Rourke
