What happens when big hearted Texans open their recording studios to musicians evacuated from hurricane Katrina? A great CD with 16 tracks from different artists, half of the artists are from New Orleans and half are from Texas. Everything on this CD was donated from the studio time to the publishing to the graphics. Many of these songs were written after Katrina, reflecting different stages of emotion relating to the dealing with Katrina.

New Orleans artists John Autin, Jonno, Bart Ramsey, Rockin' Jake, Greg Finsley, Cool Bone, Ken Jameson and Big Daddy O’ are joined by Texas artists B & The Buzz, Kenny Traylor, Crawfish, Dennis Cavalier, Nitzinger and D.O.M. w/ Buddy Whittington. “FROM THE LONE STAR TO THE GULF COAST“ is a heartfelt gift from the Texas musicians and music business professionals to the Gulf Coast musicians that were victims of the catastrophe. All proceeds will be donated to the Tipitina’s Foundation to help Gulf Coast musicians rebuild their lives.

Texan blues guitarist Buddy Whittington spent many years as John Mayall's sideman and only stepped out as the leader of his own band in recent years; it's one thing polishing your reputation as a great blues guitarist but it's quite another to take on the responsibilities of writing the material and singing it, and on the evidence of this record, it's a wonder that Buddy Whittington didn't make the jump sooner. The eleven tracks here represent a fair old tour of electric blues: touching rock (ZZ Top - style), country (Hot Rod Lincoln style) and a bit of the old Allman Brothers sound, there's a distinct Texan/Southern flavour to Buddy's music. Perhaps surprisingly, he doesn't write his own material so that he might show off his guitar prowess; he wears his skill lightly and slips his fast fingered solos into the middle section, always resisting the temptation to make it all about the guitar. That said, you don't have to be paying too close attention to realise what a master the man is, from the grungey heaviness of Fender Champ to the fast picking of I Had To Go See Alice, he can do it all.

All eleven tracks (one instrumental amongst them) are Buddy Whittington originals and his songwriting is really engaging; he tends to be quite wordy and tell a story - it's as if he's a country writer who happens to play the blues - and most songs are enlivened by a wry humour which never lets him take life too seriously. It's the same sort of tone that Joe Walsh used on Life's Been Good, and Buddy Whittington uses it just as well as Joe Walsh did. Quite a few of these songs have a near-spoken delivery, but Buddy's singing voice is just fine, seemingly effortless and certainly characterful. The instrumental, For Crystal Beach, is beautiful, spinning a mellow mood with graceful ease and the album closes with a gentle homily about making the most of people we care about, While We're Here; it's along the same lines as Mike and the Mechanics' Living Years, performed in a style that sounds something like Robert Cray to my ears. It's one of those songs that when it catches you in the right mood, you'll be shedding a tear into your pint.

Good stuff all round then, an entertaining forty minutes in the company of a big man with a hefty talent. ~John Davy

Buddy's self-titled solo CD appeared in 2007, and has garnered very favorable reviews and considerable airplay. The CD, recorded at Hurricane Sound in Garland, Texas by engineer / producer / drummer / 'ubertalentedmultiinstrumentalist' Mike Gage, features performances by Gage, longtime bassist Wayne Six, co-guitarist Michael 'Mouse' Mayes, and this configuration makes up the core of the current working band. 'We can play just about anything we need to between us, as we have all 'played in different bands together' for years, and really enjoy working with each other.' says Bud.

Band mates JIM ASHWORTH and BRYAN FREEZE formed Dr. Wu’ in 2002 after growing up and playing in various bands starting in the late 60’s. The name was taken from a favorite Steely Dan song that encourages us to live life to the fullest and strive to be the very best that we can be. With this as their goal, they set out to record their “Texas Blues” Project Volume I “Fort Worth Artists”… a long overdue recorded history utilizing guest appearances by musicians who have made Fort Worth a global mecca of top players… especially great “guitar slingers”.

The first being BUDDY WHITTINGTON , a multi-talented guitarist and singer with an endless bag of guitar licks, sounds, and tricks that are always refreshing and are inspiring. Buddy is a permanent member of blues legend, John Mayall’s BLUESBREAKERS band. Buddy lends his talent to three tracks on the CD, including a live version of the popular Gary Nicholson song… “JACKSBORO HIGHWAY” an infamous strip on the Northside of Fort Worth which in the 50’s and 60’s was lined with nightclubs like THE SKYLINER BALLROOM where under aged teens could get in to see their blues heroes like Jimmy Reed, Ray Sharpe, Delbert McClinton and countless others on any given Saturday night.

After a chance meeting at The 6th Street Bar & Grill, a local Fort Worth blues venue, long time friend STEPHEN BRUTON instantly agreed to add his creativity to a track. Stephen, a “star” in his own rite, has been a player early on with the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Delbert McClinton, Bonnie Raitt, and countless other greats.

Home-grown JAMES PENNEBAKER added his tracks from his home studio in Nashville due to his busy schedule and much sought after talent as a guitar, fiddle, and pedal steel master. James has been a member of the Delbert McClinton, Leroy Parnell and more recently….Big & Rich bands. James is now the Artist Representative for FENDER GUITARS, NASHVILLE.

Hammond B-3 master, “RED YOUNG" lends his “classic” B-3 sound on two tracks, teaming up with Stephen Bruton on “Come Back Baby” and guitarist Danny Hubbard on the Charlie Bassham scorcher, “Storm Watch Warning.”
“Red” is currently on the road with Eric Burden and the “Animals” and has also toured with Linda Rondstadt, Sonny and Cher, Joan Armatrading, Tanya Tucker, Delbert, and is the front man for his own band, the ever popular.... RED and the RED HOTS.

Long time friend CHARLIE BASSHAM, original drummer for THE ATOMIC CLOCK and LEE PICKENS GROUP was enlisted as the
third member of DR. WU' after it was apparent that he was the "voice" that was needed to give the "TEXAS BLUES" PROJECT that special magic that would push the project to new levels of "BLUESDOM".

The core element of DR. WU' music is is established with the help of MIKE KENNEDY on drums (with FREDDIE KING '73 and '74),
DANNY HUBBARD on guitar, and GRAMMY nominated bassist, JERRY HANCOCK ...collectively the popular FORT WORTH group, "THE SIDEMEN."

Following the release of their highly successful, Texas Blues Project Vol. 1 Fort Worth Artists, longtime friends and bandmates Jim Ashworth and Bryan Freeze embarked on a year long studio project, focused on producing their 2nd Blues CD....

The result is a collection of 12 all new, original songs penned by Ashworth and Freeze, with the help of "Texas Bluesman" Buddy Whittington on two. Buddy also adds his masterful guitar licks on 8 tracks, as well as 4 lead vocals. "Mouse" Mayes also makes repeat appearances on 3 songs in addition to B-3 maestro "Red" Young.
New to the roster are Dave Millsap, Mace Maben, and "Dirt" Stinnett on guitars and introducing vocalist Gerald Lawrence on two in addition to Danny Ross on keys, Glen Rothstein on sax, and Mike Gage on Drums.
Also back from Vol. 1 are good friend Lee Pickens, Bobby Counts, Mike Kennedy, Gary Grammer, Jerry Hancock, Danny Hubbard, and Charlie Bassham.
It appears that Dr. Wu'.... along with the help of all of their multi- talented Friends, has managed to surpass the magic of Vol. 1 and has taken Texas Blues Project Vol. 2 to the next level of "Bluesdom".
