14. Gonna Be With My Maker (6:23)

Do we ever really contemplate what it would mean to witness our final experience of dusk, that The Last Sundown we see with our own eyes is not one of mystery, of appreciating the majesty of the Universe, of even hoping to observe one final emergence of what was once considered a god peek over the horizon, but one that is shrouded by a shrug of indifference as we assume that all we have will be repeated the next day, and the one after that for time immemorial.

We expect so little to change, to alter, that often we can be accused of missing out of the fabulously enlightening and the dream of persuasion, the last party where the sun is lauded and human effort is acknowledged finds itself removed from our sight, and in the end, we become as blind to the experience as those that reside in permanent night. Chris Wragg and Greg Copeland lead the way, they refuse vigorously to be cowed by the darkness, and instead pay homage to all that is light in their utterly compelling and insistent new recording, The Last Sundown.

This is an album of ferocity, of piercing observation and unrepentant drama, each track is given the freedom to damn and behold, and as the listener is held still, forced by a will of sublime comprehension to watch as the sun of insight slowly lowers beyond the horizon, they are informed that the spectacle can be repeated, that they need to pay attention to more than just the introspection of their life as a spectator, they need to be the mindful witness, they need to feel every ray of life affirming moments before it is too late.

From the outset of Alabama Train, the intention is clear, this album is ready to kick out, to hound, to educate, to deny the slow burn of meaninglessness and instead promote with unbridled passion a sense of duty, and as tracks such as the superb Don’t Let The Devil Drive, House Burned Down, Can’t Shake These Blues, 1964, and the brilliant Miss Ruby all lead in a chorus of determined battle for the soul and righteous belief of the listener, each one succeeds in a way that is positive, full of charge and strength, but which also has the ability to suggest to the one with the tear in their eye as they see dying god leave them one last time, that their sorrow of all that humanity has damaged can be forgiven through their regret.

An absolutely thrilling recording, an album that would not be out of place in the pantheon of greats of those who walked in the sunlight before them, simply top notch. /Ian D. Hall, Liverpool Sound And Vision

11. House Of Prayer (Feat. Shirley King) (5:25)
12. Trouble (2:43)

Having met at a blues festival in Belgium in 2015, Chris Wragg (Mudcats Blues Trio) and Greg Copeland (US Blues artist) have joined forces on "Deep In The Blood", an album that features a variety of guest spots, including Greg (son of Buddy) Guy on guitar, Shirley (daughter of B.B.) King on vocals, Marcos Coll on harmonica and Joel White on Hammond Organ.

The result is a twelve-track album that ebbs and flows beautifully over its hour-long run time. One of those albums that hooks the listener from the outset and then utterly absorbs them for the duration, it’s a joy to listen to and a delight to review.

Make no mistake, this is a brilliant blues record, full of heart and clearly in thrall to the form. The production, the performances, the chemistry of the members – it all gels perfectly, paying tribute to the genre and playing like the perfect night out in a packed bar, with all the highs and lows of friendship, life, love and laughter played out in just fifty short minutes.

If you buy only one blues record this year, make it this absolute gem of an album because it truly is a beautiful and life-affirming body of work.

11. This Is Love (3:48)

Greg Copeland's new album is called "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" and he has come up with something special. He got the support of The Goosebumps Brothers. Goosebump Brothers? Yep, these are the guys of Big Daddy Wilson, who is of course also involved in the song "People get ready". In detail are the Cesare Nolli on the guitars, Paolo Legramandi on the bass, Nik Taccori on drums. Also Maurizio "Gnola" Glielmo with background vocals. The album comes in the cardboard cover with a little accompanying text about the Why and Why. There are 11 songs, including three cover versions "People get ready", "I gotcha" and the great version of "Working in a coal mine". All other songs are written by the musicians involved and by Martin Messing.

The album starts with "Brown-eyed handsome man", a saying that an old woman made at birth when she saw his big brown eyes. Nomen est omen and all women were happy. The number starts bluesy with an acoustic guitar followed by a pulsatingly tremolo lead guitar - pulsating like the life of the "Brown-eyed hansome man". It follows "Hip to you", funky with reggae elements but still blues, because she leaves him after 23 years. Real social background is provided by "Alcohol Abuse", a stomping rhythm around the subject of drug abuse. In a world that still sings Moonshine, this is a commendable textual approach to addressing important social issues. Again purely acoustically with folk or country elements it continues with "A girl like you". Dream thinking of the lonely musician.

Albums that do not strictly follow a musical direction and yet are tied to the 12-stroke promise variety in blues and good listener mood. The variety brings songs like "I gotcha". Here the soul flashes through. The number is from Joe Tex. The lover tests his Holde for infidelity - Caught! Heavy blues follows in "Oh no". Greg's voice soft and plaintive, because the beloved does not give a shit about whether he feels well or ill when she comes and goes whenever she wants. There it would be again - The eternal theme of the blues energetically accompanied by the guitar playing of Cesare Noli. Another song in the series "Variation" is the song "People get ready", in which Big Daddy Wilson has a significant part. The song with gospel elements sings of gentle upheaval in American society - just jump on the train of peace and join in. Allen Toussaint's number "Working in Cole Mine" is witty, especially when the Goosebrothers give their "oops" in the refrain. "Talking, bout the South" is a reminiscence of the culturally diverse "Dirty South" of the USA, where Greg Copeland grew up. Tucked away in the blues are little elements of hip-hop that can also be associated with the Dirty South. where Greg Copeland grew up. Tucked away in the blues are little elements of hip-hop that can also be associated with the Dirty South. where Greg Copeland grew up. Tucked away in the blues are little elements of hip-hop that can also be associated with the Dirty South.

With "Please, please" the acoustic blues returns. Each piece is, in principle, a journey through the genres that influenced blues over 80 years. At the beginning was the delta or country blues with simple guitar playing. In the course of the piece, the electric band is added and already makes the piece a leap in time of good 30-40 years. The rhythm remains simple and stoic, pushing the requests forward until the final chord gives the whole thing another positive outcome. Just as acoustically "This is love" begins. The Brown-eyed Handsome Man is very much in love and is sure that everything happens out of love. Again, a miraculous turn in the song, because now comes the suckersüsse Soul and Motown sends greetings. ~Mario BOLLINGER

Greg Copeland was born as Gregory Andre Copeland in Portsmouth, Virginia (USA). There was always music being played in the Copeland family. Greg ́s mother Delores Copeland was a Gospel Singer with an excellent voice. "I still remember as a small child how my Mother used to sing me a song before I went to sleep at night. She had so much emotion in her voice. Just by her singing I could tell if she was happy or sad. Her perserverance and the love that she showed me and my brother while raising us alone still influences me deeply and has a great impact on my singing and songwriting.“Greg was and still is heavily influenced by artists such as James Brown, Wilson Pickett and Buddy Guy just to name a few. These influences have helped Greg to develop his own unique singing style.

Smooth, slick, rough and down south dirty. These are the words that best describes his vocal style. One minute he will grunt and groan and remind you of James Brown. Then suddenly he will let out a scream that reminds you of Wilson Pickett while all the time still being himself. „When I sing I want to make you feel wanted and needed. Make you feel my hurt, my pain, my happiness and my sadness. I want to ask for forgiveness if I did something wrong and forgive you if you did me wrong. All of these things I try do with my music. I am a Funk, Soul and Blues man through and through. I don ́t just sing notes, I sing emotions also“.

Greg is an established songwriter and has collaborated with artists such as ex-Eruption keyboarder Gerry Williams, keyboarder/singer-songwriter Piano Pete Budden and Internationally acclaimed Roots, Folk and Blues singer/songwriter Big Daddy Wilson. Greg has also graced the stage with some of Europe ́s finest musicians. Artists such as Big Daddy Wilson, Gregor Hilden, Guitar Crusher, Greyhound Blues Band and Blues Power.
