While Yank Rachell was past his prime when he began recording for Delmark in the 1960s, he was still an effective, often exciting vocalist and mandolin player. He seldom sounded more striking and enjoyable than on the nine cuts that comprised Chicago Style, recently reissued on CD. Rachell sang with a spirited mix of irony, anguish, dismay, and bemusement on such numbers as "Depression Blues," "Diving Duck," and "Going to St. Louis." ~Ron Wynn

John Sebastian's early group affiliations in the Even Dozen Jug Band and the Lovin' Spoonful rose out of the casual party jug band music that enjoyed a brief period of popularity during the folk boom, mixing folk elements with the more celebratory elements of country and blues with a touch of zany fun thrown in. Combining with guitarist Jimmy Vivino and drummer James Wormworth, Sebastian brought in original jute player Fritz Richmond from the Jim Kweskin Jug Band to form the J-Band, co-credited on this album, which updates jug music for the '90s. Sebastian opens the proceedings with the old Spoonful song "Mobile Line" for reference, and then things get really crazy. Sebastian and Vivino contribute four originals, but the heart of the album is material by the likes of Sleepy John Estes and Blind Willie McTell, and guest stars Paul Risell, Annie Raines, Rory Block, Yank Rachell, Richard Crooks, and John Simon are just as likely to be playing or singing as the nominal leader or his band, which can mean that Sebastian is frequently a sideman on his own album, especially during a three-song Rachell mini-set near the album's end. No matter. The result is like a particularly enjoyable club date in which friends keep stumbling onstage from the bar to sing a verse or play a lick. This sprightly compilation from Document Records collects 24 vintage 78s recorded between 1927 and 1946 that feature the mandolin in a variety of settings, from blues to gospel, played by an assortment of jug, string, and hokum bands. There's a ton of energy here, and fans of the instrument will love this set, although the casual listener may find it a little repetitive.
Highlights include "State Street Rag" by the great Louie Bluie, a fluid version of "Lint Head Stomp" by Phebel Wright, the classic "Milk Cow Blues" (featuring the mandolin playing of Yank Rachell) by Sleepy John Estes, a jaunty "Jackson Stomp" by the Mississippi Mud Steppers, and the season-hopping "You Got Me Rollin'" by the Carolina Peanut Boys. Another gem is the wonderfully titled "Going Away to Make It Lonesome Here" by the Nashville Washboard Band, which features some particularly odd, cartoonish percussion. In essence Rags, Breakdowns, Stomps and Blues is a capsule history of early American mandolin playing, and the vitality and good humor of this collection should brighten any day. ~ Steve Leggett

Bluebird Blues focuses on 25 excellent performances by John Lee Williamson (aka Sonny Boy Williamson I, not to be confused with Rice Miller aka Sonny Boy Williamson II). These tracks were originally recorded between May 1937 through November 1947 for RCA Victor and include the staples "Sugar Mama Blues," "Blue Bird Blues," and one of the most recorded tunes in both blues and rock, "Good Morning, School Girl." Joining the versatile prewar harmonica wizard on numerous tracks are Big Joe Williams, Robert Lee McCoy, Henry Townsend, Yank Rachell, Blind John Davis, Big Bill Broonzy, Willie Dixon, and Eddie Boyd. If the only Sonny Boy you're familiar with is Rice Miller, give Sonny Boy I equal space in your collection. This is a great disc to start with. ~Al Campbell

Yank Rachell - Complete Recorded Works Vols 1 & 2

Yank Rachell played with some of the most outstanding blues singers and musicians of the 1930s, and won the respect of all who have known him. Figures as Sleepy John Estes or John Lee Williamson depended so much on the kind of support he provided. Rachell was on of the rather select group of blues musicians who played mandolin which should be enough to single him out from the crowd, but the obession of most blues fans with the guitar had been to his disadvantage. Rachell played guitar too (and violin and harmonica), but his preferred instrument was always the mandolin. It's ringing sounds imparts a special quality to the recordings on which he appearead. Yank grew up on a farm, but as a youngster he played dances in the country. Music took up more of his time when he brought more dollars home. At 18, he left home and worked as a laborer on the L&N railroad, which ran down to Memphis. But he didn't make it his life's work because a few years later he teamed up with Sleepy John Estes to play the streets for tips. Estes and Rachell made their first recordings in Memphis in 1929 and except for a couple they all had Estes taking the vocals. One night, playing in Jackson, Yank met John Lee Williamson and this fortuitous meeting led to a new partnership and new recordings (until Williamson's early death in 1948).

Dirty blues encompasses forms of blues music that deal with socially taboo subjects, including sexual acts and/or references to drug use of some kind. Due to the sometimes graphic subject matter, such music was often banned from radio and only available on a jukebox. The style was most popular in the years before World War II and had a revival in the 1960s.

Many songs used innuendo, slang terms, or double entendres, such as Lil Johnson's "Press My Button (Ring My Bell)" ("Come on baby, let's have some fun/Just put your hot dog in my bun"). However, some were very explicit. The most extreme examples were rarely recorded at all, Lucille Bogan's obscene song Shave 'em Dry (1935) being a rare example ("by far the most explicit blues song preserved at a commercial pre-war recording session").

The more noteworthy musicians who utilised the style included Bo Carter, Bull Moose Jackson, Myra Johnson, The Lamplighters, Harlem Hamfats, Wynonie Harris, and Hank Ballard and The Midnighters.

The 21 selections represents the meeting of a rare group of talents. Sleepy John Estes, a true folk poet, has one of the most distinctive voices in the blues and his skills as a lyricist put him in a class with such lulinaries as Charlie Patton &nd Lightnin' Hopkins. The interaction between his guitar and Yank Rachel's sparkling mandolin work, bolstered by Jab Jones' rough and ready piano work, is only out-shone by Noah Lewis' virtuosity on the harmonica. John Estes, James Rachell and Jab Jones performed in Memphis on street corners as The Three J's Jug Band. On the streets of Memphis they mad the acquaintance of Noah Lewis, an ace harmonica player. Noah was already a local famous for hiw work with Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers. In 1929 they got the opportunity to cut sides for the Victor company. It is the results of these sessions and the group's involvement with Noah Lewis on the same label that make up this collection.
