A voice is always a voice. No other instrument in the world of music can be assigned to its owner as unequivocally as human singing, because the voice is the acoustic union of soul and face. If an extraordinary voice is then also combined with the gift of being able to slip into different guises and, on top of that, has extraordinary stories up its sleeve, then the end result might be an album as multifaceted, profound and vulnerable as Ina Forsman's "All There Is". "All There Is" is the third album by the Berlin-based Finn. On her previous albums "Ina Forsman" (2016) and "Been Meaning To Tell You" (2019), she initially established herself as the powerful voice of her role models. On "All There Is" she ignites a new level of her expressively introspective self-realization by completely arriving at herself. The isolation associated with the lock-down may have encouraged this development, but the young singer had powers that wanted to be unleashed anyway. "Who am I, what am I doing here," she seems to ask us in every song. The emphasis is on I. She no longer relies on formulas that have worked for the last 50 years, but trusts in her very own vocabulary for the nocturnal atmospheres of her big city songs - sometimes in the shrill neon light, sometimes in the twilight of the nightshade.

Like every year since 2005 Ruf Records sent the Blues Caravan on its journey through Europe and the rest of the world. They stopped by at Music Hall, Worpswede DE on 2019-02-22 to present a very diversified and excellent show.

This years members have been the very talented “Texas Honey” Ally Venable (voc, g) from Houston TX, the already experienced Ina Forsman (voc) from Finland and Norah Jones-influenced Katarina Pejak (voc, key) from Serbia/USA (Nashville) accompanied by Roger Inniss (b, musical director) and Elijah Owings (dr).

Katarina Pejak is a singer/songwriter and piano player who combines genres of the American roots music, filtering them through her Balkan descent and a classical musical training.

Ally Venable started singing at an early age in church and then in recent years picked up the guitar and found her passion establishing herself as a Texas Blues Guitar Slinger writing own songs and performing them on stage.

Ina Forsman is a singer/songwriter from Finland who started her career with Guy Verlinde and Helge Tallqvist and her style is located in the area of tension between blues, rock and jazz.

Of course, Thomas Ruf didn’t expect any of those accolades back in 1994. Back then, Ruf’s charismatic founder and leader created the label simply to give the legendary Chicago bandleader Luther Allison a platform to release some of the best albums of his career. Tragically, Luther himself was lost to cancer in 1997, but Ruf Records never missed a beat, continuing to develop some of the brightest talent in America, Britain, Europe and beyond, while always retaining its fearsomely independent spirit.

She's full of surprises. 'Try Every Single Beat', with it's Latin rhythms and a lyric that Ina hopes will let you "feel the moment and stop being so goddamn concerned what other people are thinking". Try 'Chains', with it's throbbing percussion and gang-chant vocals. Even when she writes a love song, Ina twists the template, with 'Whatcha Gonna Do' and 'Why You Gotta Be That Way' giving two perspectives on sexual harassment. "The first song tells the situation from a man's point of view," she explains. "He sees a beautiful girl, tries to get her attention and ends up making some fucked-up decisions. The second song tells the story from the girl's point of view: she just wants to carry on with her stuff but this dude won't leave her alone." It all ends with the stunning 'Sunny' - a smoky acapella masterclass, written entirely by Ina, that sends you off into the world with goosebumps, ready to spread the word about this extraordinary artist. Been Meaning To Tell You is the second album that you hoped Ina Forsman was capable of - and then some.

Play Ina Forsman and the first thing that hits you is the voice. That astonishing delivery is a major weapon in Ina’s arsenal, and the icing on the big-band brass and soul-blues piano of these breakup and redemption songs. Growing up in Helsinki, Finland, she always hoped it would take her places. “I was six years old when I first said out loud that I wanted to be a singer. My influences go back to the time my aunt gave me my first Christina Aguilera album when I was seven. For me, a great singer is someone who has power in their voice and isn’t afraid to use it, in all of its colours and shades.” Yet Ina’s debut album goes far deeper than a God-given voicebox. These eleven songs speak of an artist who lives and breathes the blues, having gigged from the age of seventeen and received guidance in the genre from Finnish harmonica legend Helge Tallqvist. “Helge was the first person who introduced blues to me,” she remembers. “He took me to the studio and put our band together a couple of years ago. There aren’t enough words to describe how much I learnt from him. So much about music, but also about organising gigs, doing the boring paperwork, and life in general.”
