Deep Dark Demon, the 7th cd from Mark May drops on July 17, 2020 on Gulf Coast Records. Mark’s last release the highly acclaimed album Blues Heaven hit #6 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart and remained there for 5 weeks. To describe some artist’s music with one word would be easy but to do that with Mark May’s music would be impossible. But there’s one thing for sure, it’s all dripping with his rich love for the blues. His astonishing live shows featuring dynamic twin leads and dual harmony guitar work are the perfect complement to Mark’s smooth vocals. For over 20 years, Mark has made a name for himself in the Texas blues scene and has been perfecting his craft performing at blues clubs, bars, and festivals. The Mark May Band has performed at numerous festivals across the country including Telluride Blues and Brews, Mississippi Valley Blues Fest, King Biscuit, Tremblant International Blues Festival, Dallas International Guitar Show, Chenango Blues Festival, and many more. Mark May also had the opportunity to be the opening act for The Allman Brothers Band on their 1997/98 Amphitheater tour and went on to join up with ABB guitarist Dickey Betts and his band Great Southern for several tours and an album. Blues-rock with a distinct Texas edge is Mark May's thing. His playing recalls various Texas legends like Johnny Winter and Albert Collins, while always skirting the rock speed-demon side of the musical equation. This outing finds him surrounded by his regular rhythm section of Dan Cooper on bass, Travis Doyle on organ and Greg Grubbs on drums. May shares guitar soloing duties throughout the album with Alan Haynes ("Don't Give Up"), Billy Wells ("Mercury Blues") and Larry McCray (an impassioned Albert Collins duel on their mentor's "The Lights Are On, But Nobody's Home"), producing fireworks with every trill and bent note.

Also noteworthy are several tracks featuring the Memphis Horns, who shine brightly on "Icehouse Special" and the soul ballad "Took Me By Surprise." When May keeps his playing roped in and restrained, the musical results are well worth a second listen. /Cub Koda, AllMusic

Not only did Mark May's 1995 debut, Call on the Blues, please blues fans and critics, it earned him a tryout with the Allman Brothers. A mutual friend turned former Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts on to May's album - and while May didn't get the gig, he did open for the band on a few occasions. Betts was most impressed by May's singing - and for good reason. Throughout Call on the Blues, May's chameleon-like vocals toy with the color barrier, fluctuating effortlessly between a salty redneck drawl and a silky R&B croon not unlike Robert Cray's.

On guitar, he boasts a barbed precision that recalls the late Albert Collins, the sort of full-on command of his instrument - equal parts raw feel and technical polish - that can't be fudged. Maybe that's why May has earned the respect of Joe "Guitar" Hughes, a childhood friend of the Collins. Mark May Band - 2 albums: Blues Heaven / Doll Maker

Texas may have produced more great unsung blues guitarists than any state in the nation. Mason Ruffner and Chris Duarte come immediately to mind as virtuosos who have labored in relative obscurity for years. Maybe it's the stiff competition that makes it so hard to break out of the Lone Star State. Had David Bowie and Jackson Browne not championed Stevie Ray Vaughan, he might never have transcended the Austin blues scene. It appears that, in order to break out from the blues pack these days, an artist must either be a teenage wunderkind or have the help of an industry insider to grease the wheels.

If a guitarist was ever worthy of such greasing, it's Houston's Mark May, the best guitarist you've never heard of, and arguably the most versatile talent working the blues today. He lets fly on his third album, "Doll Maker," the follow-up to 1997's brilliant "Telephone Road."
