Rhino's 1994 collection, Bloodshot Eyes: The Best of Wynonie Harris, chronicles his hits for King Records, beginning in 1947 with the seminal "Good Rockin' Tonight" and concluding in 1954 with "Git to Gittin' Baby." Lots of hits come between those two songs, but there were a lot of recordings that appeared before and after, so why choose Bloodshot Eyes over other compilations? Because it offers the best of his best work, concentrating on the cream of his recordings for King, when he was at his peak. This is hard-driving, relentless jump blues/R&B, propelled by the powerhouse vocals of Harris along with his joyously rampaging band. Truth be told, Harris rarely departed from this formula, but the cuts showcased on this collection capture him at his best, not just in terms of performance, but in terms of material.

There are more comprehensive collections on the market - collections that span his entire career, and collections that narrowly focus on a few years - but this is the ideal collection that contains the best from his peak, with no fat whatsoever. Essential music for any serious R&B, blues, or rock and roll collection. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

No blues shouter embodied the rollicking good times that he sang of quite like raucous shouter Wynonie Harris. "Mr. Blues," as he was not-so-humbly known, joyously related risque tales of sex, booze, and endless parties in his trademark raspy voice over some of the jumpingest horn-powered combos of the postwar era.

Those wanton ways eventually caught up with Harris, but not before he scored a raft of R&B smashes from 1946 to 1952. He was already a seasoned dancer, drummer, and singer when he left Omaha for L.A. in 1940 (his main influences being Big Joe Turner and Jimmy Rushing). He found plenty of work singing and appearing as an emcee on Central Avenue, the bustling nightlife strip of the black community. Harris' reputation was spreading fast - he was appearing in Chicago at the Rhumboogie Club in 1944 when bandleader Lucky Millinder hired him as his band's new singer. With Millinder's orchestra in brassy support, Harris made his debut on shellac by boisterously delivering "Who Threw the Whiskey in the Well" that same year for Decca. By the time it hit in mid-1945, Harris was long gone from Millinder's organization and back in L.A.

The shouter debuted on wax under his own name in July of 1945 at an L.A. date for Philo with backing from drummer Johnny Otis, saxist Teddy Edwards, and trumpeter Howard McGhee. A month later, he signed on with Apollo Records, an association that provided him with two huge hits in 1946: "Wynonie's Blues" (with saxist Illinois Jacquet's combo) and "Playful Baby." Harris' own waxings were squarely in the emerging jump blues style then sweeping the West Coast. After scattered dates for Hamp-Tone, Bullet, and Aladdin (where he dueled it out with his idol Big Joe on a two-sided "Battle of the Blues"), Harris joined the star-studded roster of Cincinnati's King Records in 1947. There his sales really soared.

Few records made a stronger seismic impact than Harris' 1948 chart-topper "Good Rockin' Tonight." Ironically, Harris shooed away its composer, Roy Brown, when he first tried to hand it to the singer; only when Brown's original version took off did Wynonie cover the romping number. With Hal "Cornbread" Singer on wailing tenor sax and a rocking, socking backbeat, the record provided an easily followed blueprint for the imminent rise of rock & roll a few years later (and gave Elvis Presley something to place on the A-side of his second Sun single).

After that, Harris was rarely absent from the R&B charts for the next four years, his offerings growing more boldly suggestive all the time. "Grandma Plays the Numbers," "All She Wants to Do Is Rock," "I Want My Fanny Brown," "Sittin' on It All the Time," "I Like My Baby's Pudding," "Good Morning Judge," "Bloodshot Eyes" (a country tune that was first released on "King" by Hank Penny), and "Lovin' Machine" were only a portion of the ribald hits Harris scored into 1952 (13 in all) - and then his personal hit parade stopped dead. It certainly wasn't Harris' fault - his King output rocked as hard as ever under Henry Glover's supervision - but changing tastes among fickle consumers accelerated Wynonie Harris' sobering fall from favor.

Sides for Atco in 1956, King in 1957, and Roulette in 1960 only hinted at the raunchy glory of a few short years earlier. The touring slowed accordingly. In 1963, his chaffeur-driven Cadillacs and lavish New York home a distant memory, Harris moved back to L.A., scraping up low-paying local gigs whenever he could. Chess gave him a three-song session in 1964, but sat on the promising results. Throat cancer silenced him for good in 1969, ending the life of a bigger-than-life R&B pioneer whose ego matched his tremendous talent. /Biography by Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Wynonie Harris - Don't You Want To Rock? (2 CD)

23 of the R&B superstar’s seminal King sides in best-ever sound, plus an entire CD of alternates, all mastered from fresh transfers from the original acetates. During the first run of CDs drawn from the original King Records acetates, we proudly announced the arrival of a compilation made up entirely of never-before-heard alternate takes and unissued masters by the great blues shouter Wynonie Harris. Unfortunately, the fates conspired against us and we were not able to bring the project to fruition at that time. This time it’s for real. “Don’t You Want To Rock?” is not a single CD but a definitive two-disc set featuring every surviving Wynonie acetate master on CD 1, with the originally scheduled rarities on CD 2. It’s been a long time coming but well worth the wait.

You will never have heard the master takes with such awesome clarity as they are here, and the alternates and unissued tracks will be a revelation to even the most ardent collector. The previously unheard titles are as strong as those that were issued at the time, particularly ‘Love Is Crazy’, the three takes of which differ so much they might almost be considered different songs.

The highlight for many will be the complete ‘Good Rockin’ Tonight’ session – two takes and a breakdown of one of the most famous R&B recordings of all. It’s not often you can hear history being made before your very ears, but you can here! A typically lavish booklet with session-by-session annotation seals the deal on what will surely be one of the most eagerly anticipated R&B reissues of the year, if not the decade. /Tony Rounce

Joe Turner might have reached his peak in popularity in the 50's with his rock and roll songs on Atlantic records but these recordings from the late 40's are some of my favorites. Many of the songs were redone for Atlantic and one listen to these versions will show that Big Joe was rockin' long before the term "rock and roll" became such a fashion statement. The first 4 songs and the last one are duets with another R&B legend, Wynonie Harris. They bellow back and forth and give off some exciting energy, swapping vocal lines over the riffing saxophones. The songs were originally released on the Alladin and Imperial labels. There are some liner notes about Big Joe and release days for the singles but no personel listing. All tracks feature solid rhythm, rock steady piano and thiose driving riffing saxophones that get your feet twitchin! If you are interested in BIg Joe these recordings are a great place to start. But be forewarned! You will want more. ~Rick from Boston

Various - Risque Blues Vols. 1 & 2

A blues collection designed for the over 18s only! Here for your listening pleasure are fifty examples of what were once known as "party" records. Since the dawn of the cylinder, semi pornographic songs were an integral part of the pleasure to be derived from the audio experience. It's parental guidance all the way! There's lots of euphemisms and metaphors on display so it doesn't take much imagination to figure them out. Whichever way you cut it this dirty blues pie is chock full of double entendre with a side order of just plain bad language. Great stuff!

[1:49] 30. Destination Love

While this single-disc, 30-track CD certainly provides value for money, it's something of an awkward fit into the Wynonie Harris discography. It can't be recommended as the best Harris compilation, as it doesn't contain any material he recorded prior to late 1949. Since that pre-1949 output happens to include what's by far his best-known recording, "Good Rockin' Tonight," that's a major flaw for someone looking for Harris at his best. Still, much of what's here is Harris at his best, as it contains 28 sides he cut for King between 1949 and 1954, adding his 1956 Atco single "Destination Love"/"Tell a Whale of a Tale" (which was his sole release for the label). Too, there are a bunch of big R&B hits here, among them "Sittin' on It All the Time," "I Like My Baby's Pudding," "Good Morning Judge," "Bloodshot Eyes," and "Lovin' Machine" (though his 1950 R&B hit cover of Louis Prima's "Oh Babe!" is missing). If you're a stickler for getting the biggest and most well-known hits, the briefer 18-track Rhino compilation Bloodshot Eyes: The Best of Wynonie Harris is a better starting point. Of course, there's a wealth of good jump blues here, sometimes with an underacknowledged, almost novelty-like Prima influence, occasionally getting into more rock & roll/pop-flavored tunes on the later tracks. This might be too large a dose for non-specialists, but Harris fans looking for a more thorough document of these years than is available on other compilations will appreciate it, and the liner notes and sessionography (covering just the tracks on this compilation) are well done. ~Richie Unterberger

2011 two CD collection from the Blues vocalist. There was no one like Wynonie Harris during his lifetime and there's been no one like him since. With Jimmy Rushing and "Big" Joe Turner as his models, he became an exuberant Blues singer. He joined Lucky Millinder's band in 1944 and had his first R&B #1 with "Who Threw The Whiskey In The Well". Moving to the West Coast, Harris recorded for a number of independent labels, including Apollo, Aladdin and Hamp-Tone, as well as the Nashville-based Bullet, before joining King in December 1947 and cutting "Good Rockin' Tonight" at his first sessions. His raucous, sexually explicit repertoire struck a chord with audiences, who watched his outrageous stage act at the concert tours that became a constant in his life. Harris' career ended with the arrival of the 1960s. Music had moved on and he was suffering the consequences of the life he'd led.

Various - The Last Shout! Twilight Of The Blues Shouters 1954-1962 (3-CD Set)

The forgotten superheroes of 20th-century black music, the leather-lunged blues shouters, dominated the US nightclub stages and R&B charts for half-a-dozen years or so following World War II, before being side-lined by the bourgeoning rock n roll storm in the early 1950s. Still considered a force with which to be reckoned in the US music industry of the mid-fifties, and still at the height of their vocal prowess, many of the biggest stars were granted one or two final shots to save their flagging recording careers during rock n roll s heyday - their Last Shout.

Compiled and annotated by R&B authority Dave Penny, this 3CD set from Fantastic Voyage endeavours to document the twilight of that proud musical genre and resurrect the ultimate releases from some of the great voices of R&B. The international blues boom of the 1960s - informed by the white Europeans predilection for more unsophisticated rural country blues and urban down-home blues, coupled with black America s progressive, wholesale acceptance of gospel-steeped soul and funk - served to entomb the art of the jump blues shouter further and to remove the memory of an exciting musical form from general consciousness, until it began to be exhumed decades later. Featuring singers famous and obscure, The Last Shout! serves the best of the final commercial recordings issued for the African-American R&B market by the likes of Big Joe Turner, Wynonie Harris, Jimmy Witherspoon and Eddie Cleanhead Vinson. When they no longer sold to their market, some, like Turner and Witherspoon, were able to make a comfortable living on the jazz circuit, others pursued alternative careers in comedy, preaching, composing or acting, yet others remained tragically determined; trying to maintain an ever-dwindling touring schedule on the chittlin circuit and drinking themselves into an early grave.

97 tracks and a 20pp illustrated booklet offer a snapshot of time in the history of black music, when the undiminished power of the classic blues shouters was married to the urgent rhythms of the rock n roll era, resulting in some very special music indeed!
