The Rhythm Surf Monkeys were formed in April, 2012. They are a collective of 18 musicians (and the number is growing) who create original music of all genres.

Songwriter Jim Hiltz resides in Eldersburg, Maryland with his wife, Whitney, and their four children. He is a member of The Nashville Songwriters Association. He has been mentored by 1980 CMA R.C. Bannon for Newcomer of the Year. He has also been mentored by the host of Nashville's world famous Blue Bird Cafe, Barbara Cloyd. Jim's songs have received strong reviews within the music industry. While he loves playing guitar live, he prefers songwriting. Jim’s goal is to record original music, using topnotch musicians and vocalists. His music producer is Steve Kilgallon at Shamrock Studios in Elkridge, Maryland. Steve is also a professional drummer and author of Turn It Up and Lay It Down: Double Pedal Metal.

Guitarist Kyle Reitz is a talented musician living in Hollywood, California. He attends The Music Institute and performs on the world famous Sunset Strip.

“Failure Is Not an Option” was written after the tragic and senseless loss of lives in Newtown, Connecticut. Jim and Kyle were speaking on the phone, and they agreed that they had to do something. Jim composed the song, and then Kyle flew to Maryland to provide his creative talents to the project. Larry Wilson played bass and acoustic guitar, Steve Kilgallon played drums, Frank Mabry did backing vocals, and Rachel McCusker brought her classically trained voice to the project. The Rhythm Surf Monkeys each bring dynamic elements to their collaborative musical projects including Jim’s album, Highway 9.
