It is strengthening its mission to preserve blues heritage while simultaneously supporting future generations. A key element of this strategy is the relaunch of Jus Blues Records, serving as an essential bridge between the rich history of the blues and the voices that will carry the story forward. Following the success of the 25th Anniversary Legends Collection, Jus Blues Records now presents Turning the Same Ole Corners, the newly reissued 2002 album by blues icon Trudy Lynn. Originally released under the title Memories of You, the album is now available digitally for the first time ever. Trudy Lynn co-produced the recording with Charles Mitchell. The album features six original compositions by Lynn, along with standout performances by the late, great Lucky Peterson on lead guitar and Hammond B-3.

Houston, Texas native Trudy Lynn known as the “Golden Girl” of the blues is a living legend. Her recording career began in 1973, and she later became a flagship artist for Ichiban Records. She has recorded extensively for Connor Ray Music and is currently signed to the Nola Blue label. Lynn has received 16 Blues Music Award nominations and is a two-time Jus Blues Award winner, remaining a leading voice in contemporary blues. The album also honors Lucky Peterson, a towering figure in blues history. At the age of five, he caught the attention of Willie Dixon, who took him under his wing. Peterson went on to become a master of blues, soul, R&B, and gospel, building a prolific recording and touring career before his untimely passing in 2020 at the age of 55. He was also a two-time Blues Music Award nominee.

Trudy Lynn gives harpist Steve Krase a starring role on Royal Oaks Blues Café and he does indeed shine throughout this 2013 album. He offers subtle support, sometimes slipping in to accentuate her verses, then he takes center stage for slippery, supple solos that bring a bit of Chicago to Lynn's Texas blues. Such casual bending of genre boundaries is one of the appealing things about Lynn's latter-stage career: she's absorbed all the shifts in soul-blues styles since the '60s, so she can slide between sounds with ease.

There are rollicking roadhouse rockers like "Red Light" here but what gives this album such personality are the digressions into mellow, rolling soul ("Feel It"), funky R&B stomps ("Down in Memphis"), and even a sojourn into the Delta by way of Jimmy Reed ("Whip It to a Jelly"). Houston's living blues legend, Ms. Trudy Lynn, heralds her 75th birthday with the aptly titled Golden Girl, derived from the self-penned track, “Golden Girl Blues.” The blues legacy of The Lone Star State is masterfully advanced in this collection of musical gold.

The words “powerhouse,” “charismatic,” “Diva” and “Dynamo” are often bandied about when describing talented female vocalists and performers, but few are more deserving of such accolades as thirteen-time Blues Music Award nominee, Trudy Lynn. On the eve of her 75th birthday and 57th year in show business, Lynn is set to release her 18th full length album “Golden Girl.”

The eleven new tracks of classic R&B, Soul Blues and Torch songs find Lynn full of the fire and sass that first earned her attention and acclaim on the Houston music scene. Lynn teamed up with Grammy nominated producer, songwriter, and original Rhythm Tramp Terry Wilson, for sessions in Houston and L.A. They recruited a set of A list players to flesh out the arrangements including guitarists Anson Funderburgh and Yates McKendree, drummer Brannen Temple, the vaunted Kevin McKendree on keys and horns from Darrel Leonard and Mario Calire with Wilson himself holding down the bassline. Special guest Teresa James adds her Texas vocal flair to the album and old friend Steve Krase drops in his signature blues harmonica.

The opening track, ‘Tell Me,’ is a rough and ready lo-fi modern funk rocker with gritty guitar from McKendree with Lynn lambasting her lover’s wandering ways. Lynn pokes fun at herself and the prat falls of aging on the shuffling ‘Golden Girl Blues,’ a classic bit of vaudeville punctuated by bawdy horn jabs. The edgy guitar riff on ‘If The Phone Don’t Ring,’ has a distinct Albert Collins vibe with layers of horns and haunting harp from Krase. A slippery second line beat from Temple; greasy blues harp and a touch of roadhouse piano punctuates the sage advice from Lynn on ‘I’m Just saying.’ She then explores the emotional depths of her alto on the soul ballad ‘Is It Cold In Here.’ Krase kicks off the blues party ‘Trouble With Love’ that features hot licks from Funderburgh and saucy barbs from Lynn.

The classic number, ‘Take Me Back,’ does exactly that, as the horn driven Joe Turner styled swinger harkens back to the early 50’s R&B. Wilson and Teresa James back up Lynn on the contemplative groover ‘Live With Yourself,’ with a Reverend Al Green/Hi Records feel. A bouncy Bo Diddley beat fuels the dynamic examination of love on ‘Heartache Is A One Way Street,’ and more great guitar from Funderburgh propels the Texas Blues ‘I Just Can’t Say Goodbye.’ The slow blues lament ‘Life Goes On,’ closes the set with passion, drama, and classic style.

Bassist Terry Dry and drummer Matt Johnson are currently the rhythm section in the Mike Zito Band. Zito states “I met Matthew Robert Johnson and Terry Dry in St. Louis around 2002 when I opened a show for Hadden Sayers, I still remember thinking they sounded really good and had a big sound. Matt and Terry share a love for the American art form. The blues brought them together and has given them a musical purpose to work toward. Matthew’s drumming is strong and immense; while Terry’s bass playing is solid and straight forward. Together they make a sound that is large and tight, round and moving. Always musical and consistent, they work together to form a foundation that any guitarist, vocalist or band can make great music with.” The powerhouse rhythm section has been with Zito for two years now.

Dry and Johnson first met in 1998 and have been playing together, off and on, for twenty years. Over the years they have backed many musicians. Johnson says “Terry and I originally thought up the idea after a gig with Mike Zito…we discussed the idea of doing a project as a rhythm section, with all the artists that we have either worked with…or would like to work with…” They started playing together in Houston so it’s only proper that this be recorded there. Seven of the tracks were recorded at Rock Romano’s Red Shack Studio in Houston, while two tracks were recorded 93 miles away at Zito’s Marz Studios in Nederland, Texas. The album is co-produced by Dry Johnson and Romano.

The album opens with a recording on a phone answering machine. Nine of the ten songs were written by Dry; however the first song “Daddy’s Got A Cadillac” was co-written by him with Jamie Dry. The song was first recorded by Executive Producer Steve Krase on his highly successful 2014 album “Buckle Up”. Zito guests on guitar and vocal in a duet with Houston favorite Annika Chambers. This is a fabulous new arrangement that should be played on every blues radio station, it’s that good.

Another Houston native, labelmate Trudy Lynn, guests on the title track “Long Live Them Blues”. She is joined by Krase on harp, and the Mighty Orq on guitar. As a rhythm section Dry Johnson is rarely equaled. The Mighty Orq appears again on guitar on three more songs and takes his own vocal on “Too Many Hipsters” featuring Kevin “Snit” Fitzpatrick ranting in the background. Snit gets a chance to sing on “Drunk Girl With A Tambourine”.

The only cover is Johnny Guitar Watson’s “Hit The Highway”, a.k.a. “I’m Gonna Hit That Highway”, it was first recorded in 1985; John Del Toro Richardson guests on guitar and vocal, and it’s another fabulous performance. “I Walk Alone” features James Wilhite, on guitar with a commanding vocal.

Dry gets to sing on both “Juke Joint” and “Trashy Women and Cheap Guitars”. On the former Orq and Wilhite are the guitarists; on the later Dry is rejoined by guitarist Zito, but its Johnson’s infectious beats that really impress. Zito is superb again on the instrumental “Fried Chicken” as someone shouts out the menu entree. On the closer “Little Bird”, Dry is impressive as he sings and plays an acoustic guitar.

Not only is Dry Johnson a great rhythm section but they, along with Romano, are also great producers. This album is being called “Long Live Them Blues Vol. #1”. Hopefully there will be much more to hear from Dry Johnson. ~Richard Ludmerer

This review is written just a few days after the death of Aretha Franklin, so it’s not surprising that Franklin’s beautiful spirit hovers around an album by a powerful bluesy, soul artist, like Trudy Lynn. Like Franklin, Lynn has an amazing ability to cut through songs with a unique voice. And on Blues Keep Knockin’, Lynn’s 13th solo album, she shows that while the world will never have another Franklin, Franklin’s work will live on in those she inspired.

And Lynn was inspired by Franklin. She covers two Franklin songs on the album. One is “Won’t Be Long.” Lynn’s cover is faithful but more raucous than the original. Harmonica player Steve Krase gallops all over the track as Lynn also manages to hit some high notes that sound like she’s singing with the Raelettes.

You also hear the Franklin influence in her cover of Franklin’s “Pitiful.” But where Franklin’s version was soul playing with blues, Lynn’s version is pure blues. It’s because Lynn’s voice epitomizes the genre. It’s deep without being smokey. It could almost be described as a more feminine version of Howlin’ Wolf’s gravel-gargled vocals, but Lynn’s voice is smoother and less raspy; she just has a similar hint of the Wolf’s menace. So between that voice, and blues guitarist Bob Lanza, who guests on the track, the final product is impressive blues rock. The track is barn-burning, and by the time she’s done, there’s nothing left of the song except whatever’s been seared into the listeners’ ears.

That kind of energy is another factor that makes this a great album. Lynn is a firm-yet-generous band-leader, and she pushes an incredibly tight band, including Krase and his guitar player, David Carter. Lynn leads the band with precision, but still gives everyone time to stretch out, creating the feeling of a party being hosted by Lynn. On “Never Been to Spain,” a Hoyt Axton song made famous by Three Dog Night, Lynn takes the song down a funky road, finding a soulfulness that Three Dog Night never would. But she also gives her band plenty of freedom, practically dueting with Krase’s always-perfect harmonica, while the guitar and organ are also provided plenty of space to shine.

Lynn is over seventy years old but sings like this is her debut. With a voice like hers, it would be easy for her to coast on natural ability alone, but each and every performance on Blues Keep Knockin’ sounds like she’s putting every ounce of herself into the track. It’s incredibly reassuring to hear her doing some Franklin numbers so close to the end of Franklin’s life. It shows that while artists don’t live forever, their body of work carries on. It also shows how lucky we are to have Lynn still making music. ~Steven Ovadia

I’ll Sing the Blues for You is Trudy Lynn’s 12th solo album and the third release on the Connor Ray Music label following up on 2014’s Royal Oaks Blues Café, which hit #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart and 2015’s Everything Comes with A Price which spent 4 months on the Living Blues Radio Chart. Trudy is also a five-time Blues Music Award nominee and was inducted into the Houston Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
Trudy Lynn was born Lee Audrey Nelms in Houston’s Fifth Ward, where she began singing as a teenager. After high school, Lynn went to visit her aunt in Lufkin, where a club called the Cinderella needed a singer. She decided Lee Audrey Nelms wasn't going to cut it as a stage name. The club had a bunch of cartoon character names painted on the wall and she noticed “Trudy,” which she quickly paired with Lynn. "Lynn was something in those days," she says. “Gloria Lynne, Barbara Lynn. I thought, 'I'm going to be one of those Lynns, too, baby.' "
Prior to striking out on her own, Trudy was the vocalist for such Texas greats as I.J. Gosey and Clarence Green, where Trudy spent five years as the vocalist for his band. Green was a stern mentor, but Lynn credits him with helping her become a professional. “He molded me well,” she says. “He's still in me because of what he taught me. It takes that.” After leaving Green’s band, Lynn began performing on her own. For years she struggled to get recorded in a manner deserving of her talent, until 1989 when Trudy signed with John Abbey’s famed Ichiban label and provided the opportunity for Trudy to tour the world and perform at the most prestigious festivals including Lucerne and the Chicago Blues Festival. While at Ichiban, producers had a strong hand in directing her recordings. Since joining forces with harmonica wizard Steve Krase and the Connor Ray Music label in 2014, Lynn has played curator for herself. She has been writing original songs that blend nicely with the vintage material. The songs are mostly about good times and bad men. “Each one of these songs means something to me,” she states. “I truly understand something about each one of them.”

The Houston-based soul-blues singer's first album away from Ichiban definitely has a different sound, somewhat smoother and lower key. That's probably to be expected when you consider that Lynn has Lucky Peterson backing her up on keys, and performs three songs by Robert A. Johnson. An infusion of energy comes from Bernard Allison, who like his father Luther has a raw edge on his guitar. Lynn's voice is as strong as ever, as songs like the title track, "Time Gone By" and "Help Me Through the Day" showcase quite handily. Small wonder that this album scored Lynn a W.C.
