Alexis Korner - Easy Rider (2 CD)

From a comparatively new label dealing with re-issues we have “Easy Rider” – an excellent double CD set of re-mastered Alexis Korner. The first CD is a selection of his early recordings with Cyril Davis and others featured include Ken Colyer, Beryl Bryden, Mike Collins, Chris Capon (where are these guys now?). There is even a track of Alexis accompanying Alan Lomax on the 1958 recorded song Frankie.

The first CD has twenty assorted tracks while the second is the complete R&B at the Marquee album of twelve songs. The sleeve notes by Michael Heatley are a good but an all too brief reminder of a small part of history and more notes would have been welcome particularly to someone who may be discovering Alexis via this CD. The music though speaks for itself.

Ladies Sing The Blues was founded in 2001 for a specific project at the Copenhagen Blues Festival. A band was born. The festival had joined six people, six well known musicians/singers on the Danish music scene that immediately connected in a great musical and personal groove. The band have been touring at festivals and clubs inside and outside Denmark ever since.

Their debut CD, "Uh Oh Yeah!", released in January 2008, shows a remarkable performance. The bands repertoire is a great mix of rollin’ honky tonk blues, groovy swamp blues and jazzy blues tunes. The 3 powerful Ladies state: "We are women singing bout what we think is important in life: love, men, food, and a good laugh."

The ladies are: Ane Kramme Abildtoft, Lea Thorlann & Lene Strøyer. They are joined by 3 great gentlemen who always keep the groove cooking: Stuart Goodstein (keyboards), André Sørensen (bass) & Gert Smedegaard (drums).

The Prophets 2009 album “Roadhouse Party” garnered international reviews (see http://www.kimon.tv/pages/press.html), international radio play (see http:/www.kimon.tv/pages/radio.html), including being played on the nationally syndicated radio show “Blues Deluxe”, reaching over 100 U.S. radio stations with two million potential listeners. Whether raising eyebrows with their superbly crafted originals, exploding the hits of Stevie Wonder into the ultimate groove tune, or funkin’ up a Stevie Ray Vaughn blues jam, anything is possible in the vast PROPHETS library of songs. And they do it all with a blues style all their own, and a funk back beat that will make you stand up and move your feet.

Veteran musicians who have long since paid their dues in the NYC club circuit and beyond, the members of the Prophets have been in numerous bands with national releases. Early on Kimon (pronounced kéy-mon) survived a long stint as guitarist and co-writer with an over-the-top, edgy NYC garage band called The Wilsons, later joining Hoboken NJ favorites Fear of Falling as guitarist, there gaining much experience in making albums and performing via touring in Europe and the U.S. He went on to form Psonica, signing with the now defunct Navarre Entertainment. They released their national debut effort, but disbanded soon after due to internal disagreements, at which point, Kimon went on in the following five years to release 4 critically acclaimed solo albums, methodically cultivating his own brand of protest blues, while simultaneously developing an incendiary guitar technique.

Heavy Lime is a union of five young and talented bluesmen from Russia who play blues rock and rockabilly. In fact, the genre they are passionate about is multiple, as thre's not single way they can express themselves. Heavy Lime create their own compositions and play covers of well-known blues, rock'n'roll and funk names. They also tend to experiment and combine various sounds along with classical black and white tradition.

Heavy Lime are really in love with what they do and seek to share their passion and joy of playing blues rock not only in Russia, but also worldwide.

Antoine Arvizu - drums; Bill Barrett - harmonica; John Bazz - bass; Marc Ford - guitars, vocals; Stephen Hodges - percussion; Mike Malone - keys, vocals.

If you know Ford’s back story in full, you know it’s about a multi-faceted reputation forged on the frontline as the fabled lead guitarist with the Black Crowes; at the helm of his own bands such as the Neptune Blues Club and the Sinners; as a vital component of key records and/or tours by acts from Govt. Mule to Izzy Stradlin, from Booker T to Ben Harper; and as the producer of choice for artists such as the great roots-rocker Ryan Bingham and English country-soul talents Phantom Limb.

Therein lies the transatlantic connection. Ford produced the Bristol-based Phantom Limb’s second album ‘The Pines,’ released in 2012, and when it was time to give life to the songs he’d collected for ‘Holy Ghost,’ the inspirational thought occurred to him to offer the return job to the band’s Stew Jackson, aka Robot Club, in sessions at Rockfield in Wales and the Shed in Bath. Jackson plays on the album along with his fellow Limbs, so to speak, while Marc’s son Elijah adds guitars, and his wife Kirsten contributes vocals. Elijah, himself a fine new talent, has also been working with Jackson on his own album project.

The ex-Black Crowes guitarist's first solo album in five years is far more wired than weary, which is certainly a good thing. Rejoining musicians from his pre-Crows years in the band Burning Tree (bassist Mark "Muddy" Dutton and drummer Doni Gray), Ford strips down to a basic trio format, although one loose enough to allow horns, keyboards, and background singers to flesh out the sound as needed. Ford generally discards the country that informed his first disc for a deceptively simple, bluesy rocking attack that growls and roars. The opening "Featherweight Dreamland" sounds like '70s-era Stones, just over three minutes of gnarly chords meshed with tough maracas and piano driving the trashy overdubbed guitars. The disc then shifts to a Southern rock-blues sensibility (the rugged "1000 Ways") combined with a substantial Neil Young influence. The latter is particularly noticeable on the eight-and-a-half minute "Smoke Signals," a thinly veiled rewrite of "Cowgirl in the Sand," right down to the loping bass and dramatically taut guitar solo. The following "Greazy Chicken" lays on the funk with horns and B-3 slathered over the slow-boil swampy instrumental and Ford's wah-wah pedal and slide in full flower. The similarly styled "The Big Callback" closes the disc. Things calm down for a few mid-album ballads, the David Crosby-ish "Currents" being the most notable. Ford rearranges Willie Dixon's "The Same Thing" into a lengthy, ominous showstopper, somewhat similar to the music his friends in Gov't Mule are known for. The diverse styles on the album are threaded together by Ford's meaty guitar lines, although less so by his rather ordinary vocals. Still, despite each track sounding similar to one of his influences, Ford acquits himself as a frills-free guitarist with more chops than imagination and a whole lotta passion. At over an hour, the disc runs a little long and some judicious editing would have made it a stronger listen, but there is enough quality material played with fire and enthusiasm to justify Ford stepping back into the spotlight. One hopes he doesn't wait another five years for the follow-up. ~Hal Horowitz

While growing up in Houston in the 1950’s and 1960’s I was fortunate to play in bands and meet a lot of fine musicians. Since then I have kept involved in the music scene, and have been writing for music papers since 1992. I was honored that the band asked me to write the liner notes for this incredible CD. I’ve known Jimmy Joe Long for many years and feel like the two Dons (Don Carroll and Don Lacy) and Charlie Knight have created a bond with us that covers those many years as well. We have been fans of Jimmy Joe Long & The Little York Road Blues Band for years and attend as many of their exciting live shows as possible. If ever there were four musicians destined to be together it would be Jimmy Joe Long and the Little York Road Blues Band. They bring a professional and talented feeling to every one of their performances and put their heart and soul into every song. Their true love of music will be evident to you as you listen to this extraordinary CD. I'm sure you will enjoy listening to this CD as much as Peggy and I do, and become one of their many fans who can't wait to see them perform live on stage. So sit back and enjoy the music of "PIECES OF US" by Jimmy Joe Long and the Little York Road Blues Band. ~Dave Miller

The Badweather Blues Band (BWB) is a hard working, electrifying, energetic quintet, who has had the honor of performing their brand of blues, classic R&B, and funk for the past decade. Their critically acclaimed self titled CD "Badweather Blues", released in October of 2007, was proof that the band could transfer their raw power and soulful energy from the stage to the recording studio. Calling the Southern Tier of New York their home, BWB has enjoyed an enthusiastic following that supports their busy schedule of club and concert appearances. Armed with the powerhouse vocals of Debbie "Hop" Hospie, plus the soulful rasp and melodic falsetto of Bob, "Sonny Boy" Jenson, vocal harmonies soar. The quintet is rounded out by the rhythm section of bassist Tom "The Ringer" Westcott and the funky drummer himself, Steve "The Hurricane" Simmons. Matched with the instrumental dominance of the Mike "The Reverend" Melynk's crafty keyboard prowess, listeners will be taken to another level of "holiness". As audience members can attest, BWB's love of music and enthusiasm for performing comes across at each and every live venue. In addition to gracing the main stage at the Chenango County Blues Festival in 2005 and at the New York State Rhythm and Blues Festival in 2007, the Badweather Blues Band has performed and shared the stage with some of the following national acts: Bernard Allison, Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers, Hubert Sumlin, Roosevelt Dean, Michael Hill’s Blues Mob, Big Al and the Heavyweights, Buddy Guy, Jerry Pornoy, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Oteil and the Peacemakers, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Duke Robillard, Renee Austin, Kenny Neal, Joe Bonamassa, Alexis Suter, Renee Austin, and Crosby Loggins.

People are talking about Luther Badman Keith, a late comer to the blues scene who has been winning fans over with his take no prisoners approach to the blues.

The Detroit, Mich. native brings original songwriting, mixing humor and social commentary, a nasty, yet tasty, guitar tone, and tons of energy every time he takes to the stage.

Add to that his roaring vocal styles, and it's easy to see why the house wakes when Luther fires up.

Keith's biggest influence is the late Luther Allison, the first blues guitar player Keith saw play live, immediately convincing him that he wanted to get a guitar and play the blues.

Eventually Keith jammed with Allison, to whom he has dedicated his debut CD, Badman.

Keith's CD reflects a wide range of influences and moods, from rock to classic blues and soul.

"I try to keep things interesting," explains Keith, who didn't take up the guitar until he was 30 years of age.

"I always am hearing things in my head, and that's what's on my CD."

Jake and The Fundamentals are inspired by Chicago blues, Delta blues, good ol’ Rock & Roll, R&B, and everything in between.

In 1965 I took my guitar to Detroit and tried to make a living. For a 17 year old rookie from the wilds of Northern Ontario it was like a crash course at “The University of Blues and R&B”. Over the next decade I shared the stage with great artists like Muddy Waters, Taj Mahal, Johnny Winter, Doug Kershaw, and worked with many Toronto R&B artists like George Olliver and Bill King.

That experience has greatly influenced The Fundamentals music and style.

Since 1995, Jake and The Fundamentals have opened shows for Magic Slim and The Teardrops, Buckwheat Zydeco, Jack DeKeyser, Fathead, Downchild, Walter Trout, the late Jeff Healey and many more at festivals and clubs. I’ve also gigged with the legendary Dutch Mason, Enrico Crivallero, Danny B., Michael Pickett, Jerome Godboo, David Rotundo, Lee Oskar, Willy “Big Eyes” Smith, Bob Stroger, The Mighty Duck Blues Band and many more.

Jake and The Fundamentals have released six cd’s and hope to record again in the near future. Also, I have released two acoustic guitar solo cd’s with a few songs getting extensive airplay on C.B.C., satellite blues stations, and F.M. radio.

After all these years of guitar playing it is still a thrill and a true pleasure. Like the man says: “You can’t lie down when you’re busy getting down.” ~Jake

To say that Kal David is just a great Blues Guitarist would be a shame, although he is. But then again other Blues guitarists don’t even come close to the wide range of his styles, the colors on his palette if you will. A short while after the fuzzy glow of the British Invasion had subsided a bit, and being a guitar player myself I immediately started listening to BB King, Muddy and one particular English fellow named John Mayall and his band, the Blues Breakers as I was seeking a higher meaning and more depth, feeling, and that elusive element known as “soul “. The Blues Breakers were home to many great guitar players including Jimi Page and Eric Clapton and one very young and talented Kal David, who was with the band touring and making records for some three years. Knowing that tidbit of history will make most reviewers pen a pretty convincing argument that Mr. David is indeed a fine and experienced Blues Guitarist, which as I said earlier – he is. But they’d miss his depth and the mark by a mile!

Kal David is a singer. He is a true vocalist, a professional with way above average vocal chops to be called a Blues singer. Few of the known men and women in the Blues really have much of a great voice at all with certain exceptions. And if asked, they would probably never dispute that claim either. For example, the now very rich and famous icon of Blues-Pop, Sir Eric Clapton who came from the same school of knocks “across the pond “as most of the American Blues legends had done and had to fight his own long battle upward to stardom, but when you talk to people that you think should know their music, they just go on about the old days of Cream and Yardbirds with no talk of the great songs he wrote and sang and earned Grammys on. He too was passed over as a singer by the critics and the media but I’ve always disagreed with that nonsense. Same is true for Kal David, as when I talked to many of my Blues connections and they speak about his guitar playing, saying how great he was on the guitar years back with little mention about his singing and original songs. Now though, I have re-discovered just what a total “all-around “musician he is and I feel he deserves all the same respect as Sir Eric is accustomed to. And I know that’s a big pill to swallow for some of you but it is this writers’ opinion that the world is about to wake up to a living legend of music, not just the Blues. And then, this is where the road starts to really divide and get interesting….

Miss Lauri Bono, music partner for many years to Mr. David is fully featured in this new record of theirs called “ Living The Dream “ and she is one of the most dynamic and amazing female vocalists I’ve heard in decades! You know how it is, with all these reality Talent shows on TV these days, with the seasonal new crop and even some old bloods who come on to compete with their trademark vocal “ gymnastics. These are the girls who sing a hundred notes a measure just to show that they heard Aretha records and they have something to prove, never knowing that as in the guitar like Kal knows how to play, less is always more. Lauri sings in a way that she can sound like soft velvet or turn on the gravel and guts – raising the old goose bumps on your arm and then, she pulls you right back into another soft passage of her angelic flute-like whispers of melody and you just say whoa…..and it’s like something spiritual just happened in front of the whole church-audience….yep, someone got saved! Now I don’t know a great deal about Miss Lauri and her own
up-bringing or where she studied music but I know it is a gift. A gift that she has chosen to share with Kal David as they traverse the globe making records playing concerts, television shows and major VIP events. Most acts that consist of two great singers will usually take turns in the spot light but rarely an act like Peaches and Herb, Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, Barry Gibb and Barbara Streisand – all seventies legends I might add – comes along and makes music history together singing as a real duet. Music, at least Pop and Country music has for the most part missed this element of the male-female duets and the power of two to tell a story. It worked well for Kenny and Dolly on “Islands In The Stream” and also Lionel and Diana with their “Endless Love “, but producers seem to focus differently these days on developing one icon at a time, one song of the week and one flavor of the month than to foster and market the passion and the power of a duet, as evidenced in this incredible new record by Kal David and Lauri Bono and released on Crytone Records.

Dirty blues encompasses forms of blues music that deal with socially taboo subjects, including sexual acts and/or references to drug use of some kind. Due to the sometimes graphic subject matter, such music was often banned from radio and only available on a jukebox. The style was most popular in the years before World War II and had a revival in the 1960s.

Many songs used innuendo, slang terms, or double entendres, such as Lil Johnson's "Press My Button (Ring My Bell)" ("Come on baby, let's have some fun/Just put your hot dog in my bun"). However, some were very explicit. The most extreme examples were rarely recorded at all, Lucille Bogan's obscene song Shave 'em Dry (1935) being a rare example ("by far the most explicit blues song preserved at a commercial pre-war recording session").

The more noteworthy musicians who utilised the style included Bo Carter, Bull Moose Jackson, Myra Johnson, The Lamplighters, Harlem Hamfats, Wynonie Harris, and Hank Ballard and The Midnighters.

Sometimes Copeland's Texas shuffle blues just don't have any bite. He came perilously close on this set to having to depend on gimmicks and experience. Copeland couldn't find anyway to refresh material like "Beat the Boom Boom Baby" and "Pie in the Sky," although he tried hard with shouts, cries, and moans. He was more successful on "Nobody But You," "I Was Born All Over," and "Blues Ain't Nothin'," where his soul and gospel roots helped inject some life into the lyrics. His band tried to help matters, but really couldn't elevate the proceedings. If you're only a mild to casual fan, this wasn't one of Copeland's greatest. ~Ron Wynn

R.J. Mischo - 2 albums: He Came To Play / West Wind Blowin'

R.J. (Robert) Mischo began singing and playing harmonica in the Minneapolis area in the late '70s. He played with the blues heavyweights of that area and timeframe such as Muddy Waters sideman Mojo Buford, Percy Strother, and Milwaukee Slim. R.J. also fronted several of his own bands, including Blues Deluxe and R.J. & Kid Morgan Blues Band (which featured guitarist Teddy Morgan and singer Percy Strother). His 1992 album with that band, Ready to Go, won praises far and near and still has an unmatched magic about it. Mischo was nominated for several Minnesota Music Academy Awards while in Minneapolis, and in 1996, he won the award for Best Harmonica Player. In 1994 he released Gonna Rock Tonight. After a few tours of Europe, he re-formed the band and called it R.J. Mischo and His Red Hot Blues Band. Rough and Tough and Cool Disposition were recorded before Mischo departed for San Francisco in 1998. He recorded West Wind Blowin' there the following year. He and his band make regular appearances in the bay area and also tour the U.S. and Europe. ~bio by Ann Wickstrom

''Numbers Man,'' the latest release from the Andy T - Nick Nixon Band, is a sterling display of musicianship at its highest. Guitarist Andy T arrived in Nashville from Southern California several years ago and teamed up with local blues and R&B legend guitarist/vocalist Nick Nixon in 2011. As Blues Underground Network said, ''Simply put, Andy T and James ''Nick'' Nixon have quickly risen to the top of many people's list of Great Collaborations.'' Andy T's jazz-tinged guitar style is influenced by T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Magic Sam, and Albert Collins among others, yet it remains his own. Andy has toured internationally with blues greats Guitar Shorty and Smokey Wilson, and has performed with a long list of major blues artists around the country. The velvet-voiced Nixon, whose singing recalls Jimmy Witherspoon and Billy Eckstine, was part of Nashville's thriving blues scene in the 60's. He was a longtime member of The New Imperials, recorded for Chess Records in the 70's and has performed with many of the top blues and R&B artists in the world.

[7:20] 11. Walkin' Chains

After marking time with a live release, Terry Evans returns after four years with a studio collection that, while it doesn't explore new territory, revels in the gospel-laced rocking R&B that has always been his forte. Old friend Ry Cooder sits this one out again (he does contribute a terrific if slightly off-kilter love song in "My Baby Joined the Army"), but his influence is never far from the proceedings when Mark Shark, Joe Colombo, or especially ex-Cooder cohort David Lindley picks up a slide guitar. Evans plays some rhythm guitar and penned or co-wrote six of these 11 songs, including the stirring "Walkin' Chains," the album's longest and most intense piece. Here the swamp, religious, blues, R&B, and folk strains that appear throughout the disc collide in an explosive, moving ballad that builds to a shattering climax with Colombo's Cooder-ish guitar wailing away. There's plenty of party music, too, with the self-explanatory double entendre "I Got a Pony (She Likes to Ride)," the funky "Let's Get Gone," and the jaunty "Nothing Wrong with Texas (That Leaving Won't Fix)." Evans balances these upbeat tunes with slower, more pensive and brooding material, making for a varied and eclectic outing. The singer is in typically fine voice, shifting from an angelic falsetto to a lowdown growl in seconds. When he spars with legendary trombonist George Bohannon, who sizzles on the jazz-funk groove of "Discover Me," the sparks really fly. This is as good as anything Terry Evans has done, and those unfamiliar with his brand of rootsy R&B can start here. Established fans will feel right at home with this typically tough and tender release from an unfortunately underappreciated artist who is keeping roots R&B and soul music alive, one album at a time. ~Hal Horowitz

[8:06] 10. Blues No More

Terry Evans' second solo release (after a few with his singing partner Bobby King) further explores his swampy gospel, rock, R&B, and blues roots. Backed by veteran musicians like former employer Ry Cooder, bassist/songwriter Jorge Calderon, and even legendary jazz/funk trombonist George Bohanon (who tears it up with his solo on the album-closing slow groove of "Blues No More"), Evans proves that he's one of the most underrated vocalists on the blues/roots scene. Growling, humming, and testifying through an album primarily comprised of originals, Evans is in terrific voice. Much of the material sounds like it could have been on a mid-'70s Cooder release, but the singer adds additional vocal bite to this rootsy material. He's as comfortable with the upbeat approach of the humorous leadoff track, "Put the Money in Your Pocket," as with the searing, almost frightening deep blues of "Down in Mississippi" (reprised and rescued from obscurity on the Crossroads soundtrack), which at nearly eight minutes is the album's centerpiece and most intense piece. Here Evans uses his gruff voice to swoop and moan over eerie, snaking slide guitar and Jim Keltner's ominous, pounding drums. What's refreshing is how effectively Evans avoids typical blues clichés, preferring a more rhythmic approach -- one that Cooder's quicksilver lines do much to enhance. Soulful and emotional, Puttin' It Down is a dusty gem of an album. Like Evans' entire catalog, it's well worth exploring for blues/gospel fans looking for music that effectively combines the urging truth of gospel with the sensual grit of Memphis R&B. ~Hal Horowitz

Maxwell, who also produced the CD, is on top of the ivories along with "Monster" Mike Welch and Troy Gonyea tasty blues guitar licks. "Flyin' Too High" contains 14 tracks with a mix of Nelson penned originals and not your run of the mill covers. Hailing from Minneapolis, Alex Rossi is a vocalist, guitarist and songwriter who has been performing professionally for over 15 years. With strong roots in blues, soul and funk, Rossi has created his own unique and recognizable sound from his diverse musical background. His performances most often include a 3 – 5 piece band and a crowd that never leaves the dance floor.

Rossi formed and fronted his band Root City in 1998, beginning as a blues trio and developing into a full band including a horn section and a fellow Minneapolis beatboxer, Heatbox. The band has been a mainstay of the Minneapolis music scene for a over a decade, holding down its legendary Wednesday night house gig at Gluek’s, which will come to an end in September 2015. He is also a cast member and co-creater of the Rhythmic Circus.

In 2013, Alex Rossi’s songwriting was recognized when he was selected as a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. He has shared the stage with notable artists including Chicago, Steve Miller Band, Johnny Lang, Eric Hutchinson, Jimmie Vaughan, Blues Traveler, Morris Day & The Time, The Funk Brothers, Susan Tedeschi, Los Lonely Boys, and many others.

Rossi’s discography includes 2 full length albums, a live album and his most recent release, “The Root City EP”.

Davies' third album finds this artist moving in a much more "pop" direction, proving that she can both stretch her wings artistically and has far more to offer than merely recycled riffs and motifs filtered through a women's perspective. Her social consciousness raising quickly comes up for air on the opening track, "Howlin' At The Moon," one of only three Davies originals aboard this outing. But her interpretations of gospel pop ballad material like Lenny McDaniel's beautiful "Tired Angels," and duets with Coco Montoya on Albert Collins' title track and Tab Benoit on "Let The Heartaches Begin" are every bit as strong, her vocal skills showing more maturity and assuredness with each album. Her solo work is spot on, always paying homage to a wide variety of stylistic lessons well learned and solidly in the blues pocket with no added rock affectations to bog it down. But tracks like "Homework" (not the Otis Rush classic) make it clear that this is Debbie Davies being mainstreamed into Bonnie Raitt territory and she doesn't sound uncomfortable there at all, making this a most ambitious effort. ~Cub Koda

Jook Bourke - 2 albums: Up All Night / My Mojo's Just Too Weak

Jook grew up in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area listening to R&B DJ, Porky Chedwick, on WAMO radio. Porky played a lot of blues and it didn't have to be a big hit to get on the air. Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, Big Bill Broonzy and Muddy Waters were staples on Porky's show. The first band Jook played in featured tunes like Rooster Blues and Baby What You Want Me To Do, and other songs from Porky Chedwick's playlist.

Jook's father, Patty Bourke, was a clarinetist/saxophonist, bandleader, writer and arranger during the Big Band Era. Some of Patty Bourke's favorite tunes were also classic blue tunes, like St. James Infirmary. When Jook was at the age of 12, his dad began teaching him to play saxophone. He joined his first band at the age of 16. He was the lead singer and saxophonist in that band.

Finding it difficult to sing and play saxophone at the same time, he invited his brother Stoney to join the band as a singer. Stoney was a natural born showman and quickly showed his talent for belting out blues, R&B and rock vocals. This started a musical relationship that lasted for 18 years. Jook started learning how to play guitar and harmonica at the age of 20. He and Stoney formed the Bourke Brothers Band a few years later. He was now playing guitar, harmonica, saxophone and sharing vocal responsibilities with Stoney. The band broke up when Jook moved to Florida. It was difficult for him to become interested in joining another band after working for so many years with his brother. He turned to songwriting and began performing as a solo artist. He released his first solo acoustic blues CD in 2001. It was a switch from the electric blues and rock he had been writing and performing in the Bourke Brother's Band. His approach to acoustic blues deviates from the traditional form of roots blues music in a few ways.

Many of Jook's arrangements include drum or percussion tracks, while traditional acoustic blues does not. His lyrics don't follow the 12 bar typical blues form with the first and second lines being repeated as the third and fourth lines of the verse. He stuffs a lot of lyrical content into most of his songs. Some of his lyrics include story telling, like that which is common in folk music. Jook's arrangements often include harmonies in the refrains incorporating vocal elements of rock, country and gospel. He released “My Mojo’s Just To Weak” in 2004, "Just A Minute" in 2007, and his latest release “Up All Night” in 2013. In “Up All Night” he returned to playing saxophone and recorded it with a full band and jazzy/blues arrangements.

Mood Swingers was a Swedish band from Uppsala and started off in the late nineties playing rough acoustic delta blues. At that time there was only three members and at this moment there´s only the leadsinger Anders Söderberg remaining from that time. After some time the band got a bit tired of playin unplugged and felt that the time was right for playing something more upbeat.

2002 Anders had just started to dance Lindy hop and got the taste for swing. His dance partner was Emma and when she told him that she wanted to get into upright bassplaying it didn´t take long before he made a place for her in the band. After that it just took off and they quickly went from a four piece band to a seven piece. They have swapped a few members since then and they now feel that they have a band with the right groove they been looking for.

Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers are not afraid of any type of music. They are blending swing, r n´b and blues and are simply playing the music that they like without getting stuck in any genre. Their aim is basicly to make people have a great night out both on the dance floor and when sippin´cocktails in the bar.

The debut album from Emma and The Mood Swingers, More contains a sweet mix between rhythm'n'blues and swing. The arrangements and interpretations of the old music are awesome. Dancers cheer at it. This is really dance music. Emma and The Mood Swingers have their own, genuine sound with the authentic retro feel with a modern side to it. Seeing the band live you get smithen by their overflowing joy on stage Emma and The Mood Swingers express. Out of the 13 cuts on More 4 are written by the band.

Story telling lies at the heart of the blues. I think Ernest Hemingway said: "all stories begin in innocence." This is the happy part of the script when the future seems to blossom with potential. I've often wondered if innocence itself isn't based in delusional thinking. I do know that innocence is very often a deliberate form of blindness, one that precludes the darker aspects of life in favor of optimism untainted by history. Unfortunately, in the end, life more often than not proves to be tragic. Joy turns into anger. Peace turns into war. Desire turns into jealousy, and happiness turns into sorrow. If you live long enough you will see this two sided circle go around. The blues lie at the heart of our human condition, without pretense, or delusion. The blues tell us that life is frustrating, worrisome, lonely, and darker than we would like to believe. The blues are a raw product of our ever changing emotional life. They are the product of poverty, despair, fear, and the intense longing for the deliverance of love. They began in tragedy down in the Mississippi Delta, and they have never escaped from their roots. For me, turning suffering into something beautiful represents a kind of triumph of the creative spirit. Simply put: the blues are a form of clear-eyed liberation.

Washingtonian Magazine hails Bad Influence as “a part of a long and worthy Washington blues tradition.” With an award for best blues band, 2003, by the Washington Area Music Association, Bad Influence has garnered a devoted following all over North America and Europe, including performances at the prestigious Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts. Eleven of the twelve songs on this CD are penned by band members, Michael ‘Jr’ Tash, Roger Edsall, Bob Mallardi, and David Thaler.

“Love Dot.com” jumps right into it, literally, with a tale about a married man’s best friend in this computer age (wink, wink). “Don’t Forget Your Nightclothes” moves smoothly along with background sax from Jay Corder, with Michael Tash on guitar. We can see why this group is so popular on “She What?” Audiences will be enjoying the groove, coupled with shout-out hooks that keep on coming. “Road House”, and “B-Flick Man”, give a smile at our own foibles while keeping the beat bright. Sliding into a slow blues, “Talkin’ To the Wall”, written by Michael Tash, with a nice wailing sax solo, speaks to the pain and futile effort in trying to salvage a relationship beyond its ‘best before date’. “I have a teacher friend who has played this song for his class after turning out the lights and asking his students to close their eyes. When the tune ends and the lights go on the class is instructed to draw what their impressions were”, shares Michael Tash. He goes on to say that a woman contacted the band to tell them she was so moved by this track that she had to pull the car over.
On “DC Driver” we are up and dancing, or driving far too recklessly with this story about road rage in the Nations Capital. After “Break Out” we move to a solid bass line that slips easily into “When I’m With You”, a sweet love song, written by Mallardi. Michael Tash’s playing here more than satisfies on many levels. Using a 1960’s Magnatone M10 amp with Fender Strat guitar, “Run To The Money” moves along to dove-tail into the instrumental “Cat Fight”, showing off the skills of Edsall on harp, Guest Eric Shramek, stand-up bass, and Thaler, on drums,
The finishing touch is a very capable cover of a James Harmon tune, The Clown. Having heard Harmon play this, it had me smiling and bobbing my head in homage to the master musician/composer/vocalist. Another thing I appreciated about this product was the liner notes giving details of the gear used in its creation.
Well done, Fellas, we’re looking forward to the next album release which I am told is slated for later this summer.
