Wentus Blues Band w. Eddie Kirkland - One Hundred Years

Album: One Hundred Years
Size: 94,7 MB

File: MP3 @ 320K/s

Eddie Kirkland was certainly one of most legendary names of Detroit blues and a mythic person for all who knew him. Eddie played with all the greats, during the fifties the he was member of John Lee Hooker’s band, in the hard times he miserably lived in his car and, as he used to say, he was at the famous “crossroads” where he settled his deal with the devil. All that made him a charismatic musician with a huge personality. By year 2000 Kirkland met the Wentus Blues Band, a group from Finland which always plays genuine blues. Thanks to the late Rock Bottom, they became his backing band on his first tour in Europe. That tour turned into a close collaboration of more than ten years, performing countless shows in Europe. For Wentus Blues Band it was an incredible experience and Kirkland became a band member, as well as their mentor, grandfather and great friend, until he passed away in 2011.

Now to celebrate Eddie Kirkland’s 100 birthday, the Wentus Blues Band wants to pay tribute to the always remembered and missed bluesmen by releasing an album with nine songs coming from different shows held between 2000 and 2006, that become a good example of the chemistry that arose between all them. Genuine Detroit blues played in the real old style by Eddie Kirkland on vocals, harmonica, acoustic and electric guitar, Niko Riipa on electric guitar, Robban Hagnäs on bass and Mikael Axelqvist on drums, plus the collaboration of Juho Kinaret on vocals in the song “Sugar Hill”. All the feeling of Michigan most genuine blues can be found if you listen to this album that undoubtedly will be appreciated by good fans and all those people who look for small music gems. /La Hora Del Blues

While most people associate the blues with the steamy bayous of Louisiana and the cotton fields of Mississippi there is also a thriving blues scene in Scandinavia. In the heart of this Nordic blues explosion is the Wentus Blues Band from the town of Kokkola in central Finland. And while the pine studded wilderness of their homeland is about as far as you can get from the juke joints of the Deep South, there’s no doubt about their musical credentials.

Established in 1986, the band has acquired a reputation as the hardest working blues band in Scandinavia and they have played over 2.000 gigs around Europe. Wentus Blues Band has toured in fourteen countries, released seven albums, done several TV-shows, headlined festivals and toured with many great bluesmen like Duke Robillard, Mick Taylor, Carey Bell and Louisiana Red, just to mention a few.

In 1993, Wentus Blues Band met Swedish blues and folk musician Pelle Lindström from Leksand, Sweden, at a gig in Sundsvall. Three years later they invited Pelle to Finland for week-long tour as a special guest with the band. Since then, Pelle has performed occasionally with the band and done tours in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. Due to the big success live, they went to the Church Garden Studios in Örnsköldsvik and recorded live some of the favourite rhythm 'n' blues songs from their repertoaire.

The collaboration between Wentus Blues Band, Finland’s most international blues act, and blues legend Duke Robillard began in 1987 in Finland, when the young band got to open for the global star. They developed a warm friendship lasting many years; Robillard was a guest at WBB’s 30th anniversary celebration and also did a joint tour with the band in Sweden.
Now, with ‘Too Much Mustard’, the musicians have realized a long-held plan to make an album together. “It’s not every day, every year or every decade that you see a band whose talents and personalities blend in a way that makes them such a force of nature” Robillard explains in the liner notes. “It’s a very special thing when you get to experience a group like this perform or even hang out with.”
‘Too Much Mustard’ was produced by Robillard, features some of his performances, includes some of his songs reworked with Wentus Blues Band flair, and even includes a Robillard painting on the front cover. The resulting album is a joy to experience, in which the pleasure the musicians took in working together comes through in every note. “Prepare to be taken on a great musical journey,’ Robillard writes, “sit back or put on your dancing shoes, whichever you prefer, turn your hi-fi up and dig the sounds!”

Gary Primich (April 20, 1958 - September 23, 2007) had numerous, loyal friends in Finland. This CD contains sessions recorded live and in the studio with the Finnish bands, Honey B & the T-Bones and Wentus Blues Band. He also played on many session recordings with Candye Kane, Omar, Nick Curran, Steve James, Tish Hinojosa, Doyle Bramhall and Esa Kuloniemi.

Now, don't let his intelligence, charm, and self-effacing manner fool you - Gary Primich was one bad-ass harmonica player. This release, an offering of deep respect from Gary's Finnish friends, will stand as a strong testament to the playing and technical aspects of what made Gary Primich such a rarity in the blues, or any musical genre. With this tribute CD, let's toast to the great Gary Primich!

Wentus Blues Band - Family Meeting (Soundtrack)

The 20th Anniversary of the Wentus Blues Band from Finland was celebrated in Helsinki at the Alexander Theatre, originally built by Russian Czar Alexander II. The show, sweetened by various special guests, surely satisfied the Blues needs of performers and audience alike. The whole atmosphere was reminiscent of Martin Scorsese's "The Last Waltz" – a film that studied the giant concert given by The Band and superstar guests in San Francisco in 1976.

The show featured an impressive line-up of rock and blues legends, such as Eddie Kirkland, Louisiana Red and Lazy Lester, ex-Rolling Stone Mick Taylor, Kim Wilson from the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Omar Dykes from Omar & The Howlers, Barrence Whitfield – a real rocker in the savage style of Little Richard, Sven Zetterberg and Clas Yngström from Sweden and the great Eric Bibb. All of the above-mentioned guests have a long history with the Wentus Blues Band.

Family Meeting was filmed by the director Heikki Kossi, who gathered the best of filmmakers in Finland: Pro's that has worked with legendary filmmakers like Aki Kaurismäki and Klaus Härö. The Film tells a unique story about people behind music and it is about the family meeting of these musicians, where cotton and potato fields, joy, tolerance, and above all the immortal, shared moments within the Blues are intertwined. It's a delicious mash-up of backstage life and passionate stage performances.

"It was a once in a life-time happening, a definite milestone, a stop on the road. Down the road we had met a lot of people who's work we always had been admiring. We have always felt a strong relationship to these people. Like they have always been there, as a part of us, like a family. The 20 years of keeping a band together needed a celebration; a gathering, a Family meeting." (Wentus Blues Band)

12. My Kind Of People (3:03)

Wentus Blues Band has done a lot of steelhard road work as the backing group for many top names in the business, but now they are out standing on the field on their own. The attention now focuses on the band itself and no outside tows is needed on gigs or for the studio work. Wentus Blues Band's agricultural political has been breeded manifest into an album, aptly titled "Agriculture". It delights with its free-flowing and even joyous tone. There isn't a bit of dull work-mode, and it sounds it has sprung straight from the true labour of love. Lee Baker's "Brand New Mojo Hand" is the only cover song - this farming product is the real organic thing. Niko Riippa, Robban Hagnäs and Juho Kinaret were responsible for the songwriting. And the trick isn't just that the songs are original compositions, they are also very good.

Wentus Blues Band's music is familiarly guitar-driven. Riippa's playing is sharp and freewheelin', while "Hiding" Wikman plants up a bit more delicate guitar lines. The addition of Pekka Gröhn on keys is a crucial factor in making "Agriculture" really a happening record. Especially his piano figures are great. Juho Kinaret seems to have improved as a singer; although on the Family Meeting concerts he got compared to real heavyweight singers. On some songs he really lets his creative nuts cut loose. Hagnäs and "Axeli" Axelqvist keep their rhythmic grey eminences strong without unnecessary flash or glitter. The stark-stomping "Passenger Blues" is quite likely the most intense track on the album. "Brand New Mojo Hand" conjures the Louisiana voodoo up with credibility. There's no room for sweetie tunes here. "My Kind Of People", "Times Getting Hard" and "Here in the Night" prove the fact the band handles the more mellow sides, too.

Personnel: Juho Kinaret (vocals), Niko Riippa (guitar), Kim Vikman (guitar), Robban Hagnäs (bass, backing vocals), Pekka Gröhn (keyboards), Mikael Axelqvist (drums)

This album is a last hurrah for the late lamented saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith who died aged seventy in 2004. He embarked in 2002 upon a tour of Scandinavia with the highly acclaimed Blues outfit The Wentus Blues Band from Kokkola, Finland. They have established themselves as one of Scandinavia’s finest backing bands by working with; Carey Bell, Eddie Kirkland, Eric Bibb, Gary Primich, Kim Wilson, Louisiana Red, Mick Taylor, and Phil Guy. Dick was an original member of Alexis Korner’s Blues Inc., he then moved on to join the Graham Bond Organisation and they were one of a number of bands that merged blues with jazz and rock. After a short stay with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers he joined Colosseum for three years, after which he became a freelance musician playing whatever took his fancy.

The ten numbers here were recorded live in Helsinki, at Cantina West April 5th, 2002. The album kicks–off with "Key To Love", a lively shuffler that bounces along nicely with guitar and drums while Dick’s wailing saxophone pops up and leads a merry dance. "Missing You", and "You Got Me (Where You Want Me)" continues the groove but, in a looser vein. Eddie Kirkland’s "Man Of Stone", is an enjoyable eight minute stomping roller that gives Dick the room to sweetly swing, wail, weave and roam wherever he wants to. Dick’s own composition, "Woza Nasu", is a seventeen minute opus that epitomises Dick’s sublime talents to entice, entwine and endear you to his free flowing world. The band are sharp, tight and enthusiastic, this is amply displayed on the rousing versions of "Pretty Thing", "Before You Accuse Me" and "Looking Back". Well worth investigation.

When the legendary Chicago bluesman Phil Guy (brother of Buddy Guy) came to Finland to tour with Wentus Blues Band, one of the shows in Helsinki was recorded.

You might wonder how a blueslegend like Phil Guy from Chicago and a bunch of Finns calling themselves the Wentus Blues Band got together, and when you ask them they really don't know how either. One thing is definitely for sure, that the first shows they did together really gave them the hunger for some more, and at this point they play together every time Phil comes over to Europe.

Recorded November 2nd, 2002 at Cantina West, Helsinki, Finland

Personnel:
Phil Guy - guitar, vocals
Niko Riipa - guitar
