Mud Morganfield’s new album, Deep Mud, is a reminder of the power of great Chicago blues. Morganfield, the eldest son of Muddy Waters, is dedicated to preserving the Chicago blues tradition, and his his latest music is another solid contribution. This collection, recorded at JoyRide Studio with prominent Chicago musicians, reflects the approach his father established during the genre’s formative period and contributed significantly to the development of the electric Chicago blues ensemble style.

Speaking of the ensemble, notable contributors include Studebaker John on harmonica for most tracks; Rick Kreher and Mike Wheeler alternating on guitar; Melvin “Pooky Styx” Carlisle on drums throughout; E.G. McDaniel and Rodrigo Mantovani splitting bass duties; Sumito Ariyo Ariyoshi and Roosevelt Purifoy on piano and organ; Phil Perkins on trumpet for two tracks; and backing vocals by Felicia Collins, Kirsten Lowe, Jacole Avent, and Demetrias M. Hall.

The tracklist underscores Morganfield’s dedication to his father Muddy Waters’ repertoire and a commitment his own original compositions. The album is pure Chicago blues, spilling stories of real people, real experiences, and as a chronicle of life it is an achievement. Musically, it is equally as strong. /Greg Victor

“MUD MORGANFIELD has grown into a superstar on the blues circuit. Certainly, there will be comparisons to his dad, but that can be expected and rightly so. Mud comes as close to the Muddy experience as one can get. He will always pay tribute to his dad with the Chicago blues ensemble sound that Muddy created. But Mud was also brought up musically when soul, Motown and R&B ruled the world. Mud played bass and performed with bands playing the hits of that era. This, along with his blues pedigree, has influenced Mud’s own songwriting skills, which are constantly evolving.” – RICK KREHER

PORTRAIT offers fourteen powerful numbers by Muddy Waters’ eldest son, Mud Morganfield, including two previously unreleased songs. Mud appears surrounded by a constellation of first-rate blues musicians. All tracks have remastered especially for this first Mud Morganfield album on Delmark Records.

Born Larry Williams in 1954, the eldest son of blues great McKinley Morganfield, otherwise known as Muddy Waters, Mud Morganfield (who has also gone by the name Muddy Waters Jr.), naturally grew up surrounded by music, and particularly the blues, and he's played music all of his life, starting with the drums his dad gave him as a child, then moving on to the bass guitar. Supporting himself as a truck driver, just like his father did when he was first starting out, Morganfield didn't seriously consider being a professional blues musician until after Waters' death in 1983, by which time Morganfield was already close to 30. Possessing a baritone voice very much like his father's, and blessed with a similar sense of vocal phrasing and a sense of how to command a stage, Morganfield made up for lost time, cutting his teeth in the soutside Chicago clubs where he was soon a popular draw on the blues club and festival circuit; he mixed both original songs and Muddy Waters classics into his live sets. A debut album, Fall Waters Fall, was self-released in 2008, followed by a proper first album, Son of a Seventh Son, in 2012 from Severn Records. ~Steve Leggett

Sometimes you just have to get the basics right and work out from there. And when it comes to blues music, the vocal is where it all begins. Lyrics shot through with honesty and integrity and delivered with total passion are the beating heart of the genre, always have been, always will be. You can forget all the electric-blues scenes that cropped up in the seventies and which seem not to have lost any of their popularity to this day, that’s just rock music hitching a ride on the blues bandwagon.

With this in mind, this Danish project seeks to reawaken and revitalise a modern interest in blues, to try to underline the fundamentals that make the genre what it is and bring it to a new generation. A generation’s only image of the genre is either the sound of old scratchy solo recordings or leviathan rockers overplaying the sonic hand. As commercial music has become more cold and calculated, more financially driven and throwaway, perhaps blues is the place to look for a new emotional music experience.

Catawampus is an album that certainly tips its hat, probably a battered fedora worn at a jaunty angle, at the blues musicians of the ’50s and earlier. However, it is no mere pastiche and brings itself up to date with just the lightest dusting of other genres such as soul, gospel as you might expect, and less predicted production approach that lends more to the likes of hip-hop than traditional recording methods. But it all comes down to the music being used to carry that all-important vocal rather than someone just writing blues songs with lyrics tacked on as an afterthought. And that is where the album comes into its own.

And as is the way with many blues albums, this is an album of standards, but this is where the twist comes. It is a combination of new production and reinterpreted playing applied to existing songs, often unused takes and shelved recordings that haven’t seen the light of day, and thus you end up with something both fresh and authentic, archival music being brought bang up to date. There are iconic songs such as Mud Morganfield’s take on his father’s Mannish Boy, Sahra De Silva’s adds some sultry jazz-rock vocals to Rollin’ & Tumblin’, and perhaps the most wonderfully weird offering is the last one, essentially James Harman handing out Cornbread cooking tips to an ancient blues-bar piano score.

So this is an album of more recent standards being revisited, reworked, re-celebrated for all the right reasons. I guess more than anything; it proves that a good song is a good song no matter what you do with it. Forget the revolution; Catawampus is all about the evolution. ~Dave Franklin

Mud Morganfield - They Call Me Mud

10. Rough Around The Edge (5:52)
11. Walkin' Cane (4:23)
12. Mud's Groove (3:29)

It’s hard when you are the son of blues royalty. It’s even harder when you are the son of Muddy Waters. No matter how hard you try, you’re never going to be Muddy Waters. So, you have to forge your own path and build your own reputation with your own work.

Mud Morganfield has done just that. This soft-spoken, humble man has grown into a giant talent in recent years. They Call Me Mud, his latest album out on Severn Records, adds to his well-deserved reputation as one of today’s best performers and interpreters of song.

They Call Me Mud contains twelve dynamite tracks and will have your attention from the first to the last. And why not, as Morganfield is joined by some of the finest musicians in the world including harp virtuosos Billy Branch, and Studebaker John. Joining the festivities on guitar are Chicago blues and jazz master Billy Flynn, and next generation and keeper of the blues flame Chicago guitarist Mike Wheeler.

Morganfield played bass and produced the album along with Rick Kreher, who also plays guitar. He also wrote ten of the twelve songs here and covers two of his father’s songs: “Howling Wolf,” and “Can’t Get No Grinding.” The mix by Studebaker John and Brian Leach is right on the money and really brings out the subtleties of these performances.

Our favorite tracks include “Who’s Fooling Who” with its great ’70s Super Fly vibe, and “Oh Yeah” which recalls the work of John Lee Hooker. Morganfield is joined by his daughter Lashunda on the R&B ditty “Who Loves You” while the ’50s inspired jump blues “Can’t Get No Grindin'” has him delivering a smooth vocal that sounds eerily like his father.

“Walking Cane” is a celebration of blues and Memphis Soul, and the album’s closer “Mud’s Groove” is indeed a slow, relaxed groove.

They Call Me Mud is a varied and satisfying adventure. Lend it your ear; spend time with it and we promise you won’t be disappointed. ~by Barry Kerzner

Fans of the old man know that Muddy Waters was truly a "Hoochie Coochie Man". And Muddy Waters' first son was born in 1954 and given his mother's maiden name. The boy was raised by his mother and often heard the nicknames of "Muddy", Muddy Jr." and "Little Muddy", but currently goes by MUD. It was hard for the young boy who rarely saw his famous father, however, Mud did keep in contact over the years and the old man was always there for him. As a youth and young man, Mud kept a low profile. He was always involved with music on a personal level, but only recently has he stepped forward to embrace his musical gifts - a big voice that can only be compared to his daddy! Mud is now ready to honor his dad and his music. Watching Mud is like taking a trip in a time machine to blues heaven - you won't believe your ears and eyes! Mud sounds and looks like his old man in a way that no one else can! One of his dad's former sidemen said "It's like watching a ghost in the flesh!" Come and check Mud out for yourself - you won't be disappointed. Look out blues fan... a special delivery from the Blues Music Gods has arrived!

Mud Morganfield is the eldest son of McKinley “Muddy Waters” Morganfield, the undisputed King of the Blues. He has his own unique Mojo working for him when delivering his brand of charismatic Chicago Blues to audiences around the world; a mix of Muddy Waters’ epic songs and his own original material. Blessed with a commanding voice, alternately conveying deep emotional resonance on blues ballads and good old-fashioned testosterone fuelled strut on those classic Chicago shuffles, Morganfield lives up to the dauntingly big shoes he has been left to fill. And though his voice, zest, and swagger do at times summon up the ghost of his father to perfection, he stands his own man, a most popular festival and concert attraction on both sides of the Atlantic.

“The Blues Is In My Blood” was recorded live in June 2008, in the Drift Bar at the Royal Yacht Hotel in St. Helier, Channel Islands. Mud treated the nearly 400-strong audience to some red-hot blues that night; fronting The Dirty Aces, who themselves regularly tour the UK and Europe to remarkably high acclaim, backing famous American blues musicians, as well as Giles Robson, the charismatic British blues singer and harmonica player, recently voted “Best Harmonica Player Of The Year” in Blues Matters magazine.

Big Head Todd and the Monsters has joined forces with three second-generation blues stars, Mud Morganfield, Billy Branch and Ronnie Baker Brooks, to pay tribute to one of the pillars of modern blues, and one of the most influential songwriters of early rock and roll.

Big Head Todd and the Monsters have been fans of blues music since their first days together playing music in high school. In 2011 the band delved into the blues with their first Big Head Blues Club project, 100 years of Robert Johnson, which featured guest appearances by BB King, Hubert Sumlin, Charlie Musselwhite, Honeyboy Edwards, and more. That album led to a limited number of tour dates under the Big Head Blues Club moniker that same year.

Together these four artists form the 2016 incarnation of the Big Head Blues Club, armed with their brand new album “Way Down Inside” featuring an incredible playlist of songs from Willie Dixon, possibly the most prolific and accomplished songwriters in modern blues and rock n’ roll.

08. Honey Bee (Feat. Lurrie Bell) (8:51)
09. I Got To Find My Baby (Feat. Eddie Taylor Jr) (3:39)

This is the debut album with veteran Nico Smoljan as a leader. This self titled release is a big helping of straight ahead, electric Chicago style blues. Smoljan is a first rate harmonica player who excels at both the diatonic and chromatic blues harp. This 35 year old is a native of Patagonia and is a long time resident of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Smoljan has performed at some of the most prestigious blues and jazz festivals in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. He has played with other internationally renowned musicians including Lynwood Slim, Duke Robillard, Rick Estrin, Henry Gray, Igor Prado, Jody Williams, Mark Hummel, Flávio Guimarães and many others.

The Shakedancers are guitarist Matias Cipiliano, Mariano D’andrea on bass, drummer Pato Raffo and Gustavo Doreste on piano and Hammond B3.

Three players who Smoljan has also performed with at festivals are guests on this album. They are Eddie Taylor Jr., Lurrie Bell and Mud Morganfield.

The album opens with a Smoljan instrumental. He demonstrates right out of the chute he has a full robust sound with exceptional tone. Then it is on to a song that probably shouldn’t be covered and that is Muddy Waters’ adaptation of the Bo Diddley tune I’m a Man entitled, Mannish Boy. Since Muddy’s son Larry “Mud” Morganfield is singing the tune, we can let it slide.

Then it is on to another Smoljan instrumental. This slow blues is in the spirit of Little Walter. It features Arthur “Catuto” Garcia on loan from Brazil’s The Headcutters and guitarist Rafo Grin.

Then Eddie Taylor Jr. makes the first of two appearances on the CD. Here he sings and plays guitar on the Jimmy Rogers tune, You’re the One. On the Magic Sam tune, That’s All I Need, Smoljan makes his only vocal contribution to the album. This is followed up by another slow Smoljan instrumental, Once, 3AM which features his fine chromatic abilities.

Javier Goffman sings the John Lee Williamson (Sonny Boy 1) tune I Been Dealing with the Devil. Lurrie Bell sings and plays guitar on an almost nine minute workout of Muddy’s Honey Bee. The album closes with Eddie Taylor Jr. singing and playing guitar on one of his dad’s tunes, I Got To Find My Baby.

This album is imbued with stellar musicianship from top to bottom by players whose hard work, practice and study are evident on every track. The band’s deep devotion, dedication and reverence to this type of material is clearly evident. The album’s production is also top shelf. I look forward to hearing more from Nico Smoljan & Shakedancers.

This is the surprise album of 2015 and is definitely a contender for New Artist Debut Album of the Year.? ~David Mac
