Blue Moon Marquee - Bare Knuckles & Brawn

Upon reading the title Bare Knuckles & Brawn, from Canada’s Blue Moon Marquee, one might expect a CD full of hard-driving numbers that prove Saturday night’s all right for fighting. Imagine this reviewer’s surprise on finding eleven original songs that bring back the big-band sound of the 1940s, complete with horns, ragtime beats, and lead vocals reminiscent of Louis Armstrong’s. The lyrics also hearken to earlier days, expanding upon song names such as “High Noon,” “The Red Devil Himself,” and “52nd Street Strut.” Those who prefer their blues on the raunchier, meatier side won’t find much to chomp on, but those who like it smooth and hot will simply adore this album. It’s also great fuel for inspiration in quiet moments, meant to silence mental chatter and let one’s thoughts flow.

“This album, to me, represents a combination and evolution of our last records,” says front man A.W. Cardinal. “I believe it features some of our best recorded work, and we were able to do it with some of the best possible musicians.” Bassist and vocalist Jasmine Colette adds, “We recorded [it] in three days. I like all the grit and pulp with my music, so the warm sound of the tape made it come together. All the songs were written…in the last year of our travels, in relation to the air of the times, characters we meet, cities we walk in and the weather we feel.” Blue Moon Marquee currently makes their home in an island shack on the coast of the Salish Sea in British Columbia. Joining Cardinal and Colette are guest musicians Darcy Phillips on piano and Hammond B3; Jerry Cook on tenor sax, baritone sax, and clarinet; Jimmy “Hollywood” Badger on drums; Jack Garton on trumpet; and Paul Pigat on guitar for “The Red Devil Himself.”

“Big Black Mamba” starts things off, a unique meditation on the snare of fossil fuels: “I asked for water; she brought me gasoline. That’s the meanest gal I’ve ever seen. Big Black Mamba, you got me moaning low, dirty mis-treater from the stars of Texaco.” Up-tempo love ballads “Smoke Rings for my Rider” and “Fever Flickering Flame” follow, guaranteed to make even the dead rise from the grave and dance. Cardinal’s guitar is cardinal on both, a prime example of his instrument of choice conversing with listeners via musical notes. “Hard Times Hit Parade” slows things down, the perfect background music for a film noir scene. Dig Darcy Phillips on his Hammond and the melancholy horn solo, echoing in one’s ears like a night breeze.

“As I Lay Dying” contains the album’s title in a pithy piece of lyrics: “The world was built [with] bare knuckles and brawn.” A.W.’s vocals are at their Armstrong-iest here. Earworm “High Noon,” according to the band, “is a reference to Black Elk, a holy man of the Oglala Lakota people and the perseverance of Native peoples.” The next two tracks will make guitar lovers swoon, especially “Big Smoke” for traditionalists. “52nd Street Strut” is a rat-a-tat tribute to Billie Holliday, featuring Jasmine Colette’s velvety voice. “Wayward” and “Lost and Wild” close things out, with the final song wistfully bringing “What a Wonderful World” to mind. Blue Moon Marquee has demonstrated that their name should be in lights once more with the classic sound and big-band bravado of Bare Knuckles and Brawn! /Rainey Wetnight, Blues Blast Magazine

Five paths, one single emotion: the living blues. Coming from very different musical backgrounds, the Five Bluesmen blend their experiences into a vibrant and original blues sound. With Blues Factory, their third album, the group affirms its identity: authentic, generous, and profoundly human. Ray Perelli, singer and rhythm guitarist, is the driving force behind the band. Ray discovered B.B. King at age 13 and was never the same after that: the blues became his language.

After years of playing various styles (notably with the Dixie Cats), he founded Five Bluesmen in 2010. Alongside him, Elvis, the lead guitarist, joined the adventure from the very beginning after an impromptu concert - no rehearsal, just instinct and passion. Jérôme Frulin, the Parisian bassist from the cult band Sales Majestés. Eric Flayecasse, the Belgian drummer, infuses the rhythm section with his unique energy. As a regular guest Élie Coquard, a well-known professional harmonica player in France and Belgium, breathes his soul into their music.

Personnel: Ray Perelli (vocals, rhythm guitar); Elvis Chambrey (lead guitar); Jerome Frulin (bass, lap steel guitar); Eric Flayecasse (drums). Guests: Stephane Verdura (piano, Hammond organ); Elie Coquard (harmonica).

From a shotgun shack in the cotton fields of Louisiana to the main stages of international blues festivals - Lil’ Jimmy Reed has come a long way. Now, one of the last surviving legends of classic Louisiana down-home blues is back with a powerful new album - Caress Me Baby. With his stinging guitar work, gritty vocals, and haunting harmonica, Lil’ Jimmy Reed carries the legacy of real blues. His story is legendary: born Leon Atkins in 1938 in Hardwood, LA, raised near a blues nightclub where Slim Harpo and Lightnin’ Slim played, and handed a career-defining opportunity when he filled in for Jimmy Reed himself. The crowd loved him - and the rest is blues history.

This album features classics made famous by Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, and Joe Turner, alongside stunning original compositions by Lil’ Jimmy himself. Expect deep grooves, storytelling lyrics, and that unmistakable Southern blues sound. Lil’ Jimmy Reed has been nominated for a Grammy, awarded Blues Harmonica Player of the Year by the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame, received the Living Legend Award from the Baton Rouge Blues Society, and been inducted into the Alabama Blues Hall of Fame. His performances earn standing ovations worldwide - and now, you’ll hear that magic in this new release.

The 24th Street Wailers - Where Evil Grows

Had a really rough day? Want to just relax, reboot, and get happy? If so, then the new 24th Street Wailers album, Where Evil Grows, is just the ticket. The album is the much anticipated follow-up to last year’s well received Wicked, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Sometimes, when music is described as “vintage” so-and-so, there is a connotation of being staid, perhaps even stale. The 24th Street Wailers aren’t having any of that. Their animated offerings are always a good time, full of spunk and passion. This outing features 10 tracks written by drummer and vocalist Lindsay Beaver, plus three covers. Like their previous album, Where Evil Grows is produced and engineered by Billy Horton at his Fort Horton Studios in Wyldwood, Texas. As with all their albums, the mix and sound are excellent. The band is made up of Canadian and American members including new guitarist, St. Louis native Elliot Sowell, who fills the vacancy left by Emily Burgess’ departure last year.

Beaver’s vocals, a delightfully robust cross between Brenda Lee and Etta James, are wonderfully strong, nuanced, and convincing. The band is tight, and they continue to draw us in with their joy and enthusiasm. Standout tracks on Where Evil Grows include the rocker “Cursed,” and “Just Wait,” which features sweet tenor sax soloing by Jon Wong. Pianist Jessie Whiteley, and Wong, both lay down fine solo work on “All I Think of Is You,” and a simply killer version of “I Found A Love” definitely takes one back in time. Mike Archer’s bass work is spot on throughout, and the band really gels as a unit.

If you enjoy your “vintage,” or if you prefer, “retro” jump blues, with some kick instead of a lame imitation, this album is for you. /Barry Kerzner, American Blues Scene

Personnel: Lindsay Beaver (vocals, drums, percussion); Elliot Sowell (guitar); Michael Archer (bass, backing vocals); Jesse Whiteley (piano, backing vocals); Jon Wong (tenor saxophone); Billy Horton (vibraphone).

Bill “Watermelon Slim” Homans was born in Boston. His father was a progressive attorney and freedom rider. His brother is a classical musician. He grew up in North Carolina where he heard his housekeeper singing John lee Hooker songs. He attended college on a fencing scholarship but left early to enlist to fight in Vietnam. While laid up on a hospital bed in Vietnam, he taught himself how to play on a $5 upside down left-handed guitar using a triangle pick he cut from the lid of a coffee can and using his Zippo lighter as a slide. He ended his tour of duty in Vietnam in 1970 and in 1973 released his first album, a furiously anti-war album, Merry Airbrakes.

He returned to Boston and took on many jobs over the next 30 years including truck driver, forklift operator, sawmiller (where he lost a partial finger), a funeral officiator, among others. He also became a small-time criminal, which ultimately forced him to leave Boston and relocate to Oklahoma where he became a watermelon farmer, thus giving him his nickname of Watermelon Slim. Somewhere in between all those activities, he completed two undergrad and a master’s degree and joined Mensa, the organization that recognizes certified genius. But he continued truck driving as his principal income using the long hours in a truck singing a cappella songs to himself that kept him awake and entertained, but also became the source of the songs for his albums.

In 2002, he had a near-fatal heart attack. After recovering from that and with a new direction in life, he moved to a new emergence as a blues performer. His music has received 17 Blues Music Award nominations, including six nominations in both 2007 and 2008. Only a few musicians like B.B. King and Buddy Guy have ever received six nominations in a single year and Slim holds the record as the only artist to receive six nominations in two consecutive years. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2015.

His gruff, but passionate vocals intertwine on fourteen original songs with his razor-sharp slide guitar work and harmonica, which he says is in keeping with the style of Slim Harpo. He is joined on the album by Joanna Miller on drums & percussion, Gilles Fournier on upright bass, John Soles on electric bass, Jay Nowicki on electric guitar, Jeremy Rusu on piano, clarinet, accordion and mandolin, Don Zueff on fiddle, and with vocals from Jolene Higgins, Sol James and Ray “Coco” Stevenson. Scott Nolan plays the drums, percussion, guitar and adds vocals on the title song. Chris Carmichael plays drums on “They Didn’t Even Give Us a Parade”.

Watermelon Slim’s lyrics are just as sharp and poignant as ever, which has always been the pinnacle of his work on his many albums over the years. Here he is reminiscing about his many past experiences, speaks for how the common man survives today, and concludes with a song seemingly addressing a concern for what the world is coming to presently. The songs sometimes drift away from what I consider the blues, but he is presenting a cross-section of life, which makes you want to listen carefully. /John Sacksteder, Blues Blast Magazine

Nick Gordon is a multi-instrumentalist, taking lessons on trumpet, drums, accordian, piano and guitar. Nick settled on guitar and has established himself as a world class blues guitarist. Nick has fronted a variety of bands and has played extensively around his hometown of Ventura, California. Nick has also played many local festivals and has been an opening act at the Ventura Theater for some big name acts like John Mayall, Jimmy Van Zandt and White Lion. Nick has also appeared on live radio on KCSB in Santa Barbara which included a live on-the-air performance. Nick's latest project is his debut CD with 13 original songs, all written by Nick and 2 co-written by T Bone. Nick plans on touring extensively abroad to promote the new CD. These songs were heavily influenced by 70's & 80's rock bands with plenty of hot guitars and references to Sex, Drugs & Rock n Roll. Blues are prominent in the music as well as country with a little bit of Funk thrown in. The album also features a beautiful semi-acoustic ballad called "Baltimore" (play it above). Nick prides himself on his live performances, carefully choosing the very best musicians. So look forward to getting blown away at a Chronic Blues Party show near you soon. Nick promises to deliver the fattest grooves and hottest guitar licks, keyboard and harp resulting in a mind blowing musical experience. Nick is a staunch Patriot and supporter of his country. He is very proud to be an American and is very concerned about the U.S. Troops fighing terrorism abroad. Chronic Blues Party also has a mascot. He is Nick's badass little Rat Terrier named Napoleon. We'll have pictures of him up soon. Do yourself a favor and get on the Chronic Blues Party bandwagon and mailing list so you won't miss out on a single minute of Chronic.

Local guitar legend Roby Duron has been wowing audiences around the L.A. area for more than a decade. Roby is easily one of the hottest guitarists in the country with his incendiary blues rock guitar attack and world class stage personality. He was really able to add the guitar punch Nick was looking for on the album. Nick invited Roby to Produce, play multi-instruments, sing back-up and help shape the overall sound of the album. Roby is involved with many projects and is a huge asset to any artist. The Legendary T-bone Steak really knows how to "cut heads", when it comes to blues harmonica. His playing alternates between classic William Clarke style riffs to explosive high end speed runs ala John Popper. T-bone has been performing live and in the studio with Nick for years, opening live shows for the likes of John Mayall and many other well known artists. T-bone is a prolific song writer and co-wrote two of the songs on the album which are "The Wheel", and "Hellhounds". Playing drums on the Chronic Blues Party album was none other than the master himself, Ruben Duarte. Ruben has toured the country with Tito Jackson and has established himself as one of the best drummers in the area. Nick especially likes Rubens musical skills on his Paiste ride symbol, and his sure and firm kick along with his impeccable sense of timing. John Greathouse lays down the grooves on the Hammond b-3, nord, piano and clavenet. John is a world class pro and his influence is heard throughout the entire album. John has toured the world and has amassed numerous album credits as well as being a composer for television. On bass guitar we have the living legend Rick Reed. Rick is really part of the story of the blues. He recorded and toured extensively with the legendary William Clarke. He has toured the world too many times to count and has many, many album credits. Rick has performed live with Nick for the past year at a variety of local shows. Rick is the master of the blues and really makes the album groove. We actually recorded the album in Ricks own recording studio, "The Blues Bunker".

Her powerful voice and her exceptional, sometimes raunchy stage presence, her professionalism and her determination have earned Sandra Hall the nickname of “the Empress of the blues". A native of Atlanta, Sandra Hall grew up nearby in a small town where her grandfather was a pastor. Along with her sister Barbara, she began singing gospel at the age of four, with their grandmother at the piano while their mother was on tour, also singing gospel. Eight years later, the two sisters set up the Soul Sisters and began to sing in clubs. From 1965, Sandra Hall was a singer and dancer in the Exotics, a female group that occasionally opened for artists whose tour passed through Atlanta. This allowed her to rub shoulders with big names in soul and blues, such as B.B. King, Otis Redding, Bo Diddley and Etta James.

After about ten years, her career takes on another dimension and it is now under her name that she sings, tours and records. However, she could not always lead a full-time musical career and was sometimes required to work as a nurse, dancer or stripper. She also makes the choice to take the time to raise her daughter. Despite these intermittences, her career is rich in numerous American but also European tours (Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, France). She has shared the stage with legendary artists such as James Brown, B.B. King, Johnny Taylor, Otis Redding, Bo Diddley, The Temptations, The O'Jays, Etta James, Mavis Staples and Jimi Hendrix.

b. c. 1948, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Hall sang from very early childhood, singing not only in church but also performing for admiring customers at her grandmother’s fish fry. From the age of 12 she sang in a duo, the Soul Sisters, with her sister Barbara Hall. From the mid-60s she sang and danced with the Exotic, a female group that sometimes opened for touring blues and soul artists visiting Atlanta, in particular at the Royal Peacock, one of the city’s leading nightclubs.

Later, Hall worked as a nurse in Atlanta, singing part time, and she also raised her daughter. Reportedly, Hall also performed as a go-go dancer and stripper and if true, this element of her past might account for the emergence in her live performances of vibrant and sensual undercurrents. Unafraid to offer highly charged songs that are replete with innuendo, if not outright sexuality, Hall is perhaps best caught live although her recordings retain some of that same earthy drive.

Hall began recording in the mid-70s and successfully blended earthy blues with soaring soul. Any blues singer who takes as her billing the accolade, ‘Empress of the Blues’, has a lot to live up to and if Hall is no Bessie Smith then she is certainly worthy of a wider audience than has so far been hers although she has visited Europe where she attracted attention from fans and critics alike in Switzerland, where she sang at the Montreux Festival, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy.

Songs in her repertoire include ‘Pump Up Your Love’, ‘Ball And Chain’, ‘I Got Everything I Need’, ‘One Drop Will Do You’, ‘Find You A Job’, ‘Use What You Got’ and ‘Big Long Slidin’ Thing’. In 2005 she appeared at the W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival. Hall is a friend and mentor to newcomers such as Shemekia Copeland. In addition to performing, Hall also visits schools in the south, talking about the culture of the blues and teaching blues singing. /Biography by AllMusic

Imagine yourself cruising down the highway with a beat on the radio that won’t let you take your foot off the gas. The drums keep stomping and the guitar is smoking like a Mississippi hay fire. Cops may try to stop you, but they’ll never get you. The vocals roar “catch me if you can”, while the harmonica squeals away like a mock-siren. Little Hat offer a perfect combination if you’re looking for some risk!

Machiel Meijers (Stackhouse) sounds raw and passionate on vocals and harmonica. This couples well with the primitive yet masterful guitar sounds of Dutch Blues Hall of Fame inductee Willem van Dullemen (Groovetones). Four on the floor, ace drummer Paolo de Stigter’s (Dr Velvet) right foot will make you forget there is no bass player in this outfit. It may be tempting to think that lack of bass means lack of power, but make no mistake: this alternative power-trio keeps on rocking so you can keep on rolling! Close your eyes and you can almost see a mean looking one-man band playing a relentless groove in the last remaining corner of a noisy barndance.

Releasing debut album “Wine, Whiskey and Wimmen” and winning the Dutch Blues Challenge have opened the way for the band. Their second album “Rocking This Joint Tonight” is also produced by Little Victor and picks up where they left off: a search for everything rare and sleazy. Think forgotten Louisiana dirt roads and jukejoints at last call. So hold on to your hats, and get ready to shift into high gear! /Bluestown Music

Nick Earle is quickly becoming one of the most electrifying names in Canadian rock. Hailing from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Earle has spent over a decade honing his craft on stages across North America, first as one half of the award-winning blues duo Earle & Coffin, before shifting gears into something bigger, louder, and unmistakably his own. Between the two acts he has earned 21 MusicNL awards and 2 Canadian Folk Music Awards.

Now leading Nick Earle & The Reckless Hearts, he’s bringing a fresh surge of energy to rock ‘n’ roll; balancing sharp songwriting with show-stopping guitar work that’s as technical as it is explosive. Their live show is a high-octane, no-apologies blast of guitars, sweat, and swagger - earning them spots alongside the likes of Nickelback, Matt Mays, The Trews, and Third Eye Blind.

Nick Earle & The Reckless Hearts are channeling something raw, real, and recklessly alive - bringing East Coast Rock to the masses, one hook at a time. After the breakout success of No More Hiding and its viral single “Born to Lose” (4.8M+ TikTok plays, ECMA-nominated), Earle returns in Spring 2025 with Under the Influence, his most ambitious work yet, shaped over two years of writing, recording, and live shows. Now signed to 745 Music Management (founded by Jay Emmons of The Glorious Sons), Earle is leveling up with a national spotlight, including a slot opening for ZZ Top at the 2025 Iceberg Alley Festival.

Whether it’s a smoky bar room stage or a summer festival crow, Nick Earle is channeling something raw, real, and recklessly alive - bringing East Coast Rock to the masses, one hook at a time.

Isaac owned the Seattle blues scene for several decades. He didn’t like to travel and he never had the management to acquire an international reputation, but he certainly had all the musical prerequisites necessary to make it big. Isaac taught himself piano and the guitar as a boy and by the time he was in his early twenties he was touring with the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi. He left that experience as the owner of a surpassingly gorgeous, church-infused voice. It was passion for the guitar playing of Albert Collins that drew him closer and closer to the blues. Collins was based in California in the 1970s and played Seattle often, and he and Isaac became thick as thieves. Isaac adopted Collins’ technique of relying solely on an insanely heavy thumb—no picks or other digits for those two guys. Isaac was always searching for new sounds, so he related to Jimi Hendrix right away. At any rate, Isaac’s gospel vocal style and his rocket-propelled approach to the guitar made him an absolutely unique kind of blues musician.

I met Isaac through drummer Twist Turner, who was playing with Scott at the time, in 1975 and joined his band for the next couple of years. In those days were only two clubs in Seattle that regularly booked blues bands—the Boulder Lounge on First Avenue, and the Place Pigalle (“Pig Alley”) right around the corner in the back of the Pike Place Market. Pig Alley was a classic waterfront dive favored by an eclectic clientele that included local degenerates, sailors on shore leave, aging beatniks, and young hipsters. Isaac had the house gig there. The Boulder was much more upscale with its padded black-and-red leather booths and go-go dancers in cages. Tom McFarland had the regular slot there.

Most of my memories of playing with Isaac revolve around Pig Alley. Isaac would often indulge himself in endless shuffles or slow blues workouts with acres of guitar solos. Isaac had copped Albert Collins’ 60-foot-guitar-cord trick and would often stroll through the club while he was playing. The Pig had a phone booth at the end of the bar, and Isaac would squeeze himself in there with his guitar (no small feat, as Isaac weighed about 300 pounds in those days). Once inside the booth, he would snap the door shut with his elbow and the light inside the booth would pop on, bathing him in a heavenly light from above.

Isaac was a very sweet guy by nature, but he could get hard core when the situation called for it. Once some young hippie “promoters” booked us on a Tuesday night at a local bar for surprisingly big money. Such surprisingly big money that we all grilled Isaac about whether this was a real gig or not. He assured us that he had made a solid deal. We played the entire night for about four people and the promoters didn’t show up until closing time at 1 a.m. They approached Isaac and asked him to step outside for a consultation. This didn’t look promising, and we watched through the windows as the two hippies huddled with Isaac on the sidewalk. Isaac listened to each man in turn as they obviously pleaded with him, gesturing nervously all the while. Isaac’s face became more solemn by the second, finally settling into a frightening scowl as he began to shake his head: "No, no, no…” One of the booking agents made what would prove be a final attempt to placate the big man; it was cut short by Isaac’s big right hand making contact with the side of his head. This initial victim instantly took the form of a crumpled heap on the sidewalk. Isaac turned toward the other promoter, who, in a desperate surge of adrenalin driven by fear of impending doom, bolted up Second Avenue. We all piled out onto the sidewalk just in time to watch Isaac, in a grisly, big-city version of a cheetah running down a defenseless gazelle on "Wild Kingdom," take off at an incredible velocity for a man of his size and make quick work of his second prey. But Isaac wasn’t done yet. He grabbed a hand truck out of the van, rolled it into the bar and proceeded to unplug the club’s expensive new jukebox from the wall, heave it onto the hand truck, and head for the door. He was stopped by the bar owner, and we got our money. Now THAT’S how a real band leader does it, people!

There were other memorable nights (like the time when Albert Collins pulled a knife on Isaac in the back room at a Pioneer Square club) and better venues (like a memorable opening slot at the San Francisco Blues Festival in Golden Gate Park), and I always enjoyed not only playing with Isaac but just being around him. He loved to play and he liked to have a good time. Unfortunately, even when I was in the band he was beginning to suffer from health issues that would take him from us far too early at the very young age of 56.

Isaac was justly famous for his six-string pyrotechnics, but my favorite recording of his is his brilliant and reworking of the Beatles’ tune “Help,” which I never get tired of because it shows off Isaac’s skill, his soulfulness, and his creativity. He probably had more musicality in his little finger than any other talent I’ve ever worked with. RIP, Isaac. None of us have forgotten.

This album’s songs are shaped from a blues that comes from another kind of clay. Kansas City is not deep South blues - it threads its coat from a Big Band fabric, with jazz, rhythm & blues, jump blues & ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll without a chaser. The inspired blues roots of the South is there, but it’s been shaken through a colander of musical history. It’s dirt, soil, with the roots & branches still nestled in it. Not yet, muddy but dusty & fertile.

Instead of Muddy Waters, it’s fried in Louis Jordan batter - instead of Robert Johnson, it has T-Bone Walker scuffs on its shoes. There’s an effervescence to it. There are 14 feisty hours on the face of Kansas City O’Clock. Its showcase introduces foreign ears to the storied music of Kansas City. Its style, attitude, & well-nourished blues ancestry. It’s a big-band/swing approach to the blues, with honking sax & arrangements that are exciting arrangements. Mike Bourne doesn’t have a compelling voice, but he does have a Cab Calloway-Louis Prima energy that’s the diesel that runs rich in these tunes.

The opener is bracing. It will remind younger listeners why their grandparents knew how to dance when the melodies were stripped of all discipline. “Can’t Be Anybody But Myself” is a hot number. More of a jump-blues with a detour through the R&R tradition is the cool “Beer In the Morning.” Wow. Nice arrangement, great playing. The saxes pump like a tug boat smoke stack. Surprisingly, what makes this all the more engaging is the slightly laid-back vocal production. Good choice. It captures a “live” feel.

“Too Old To Be Young” is entertaining like the old ‘40s Ted Lewis & his orchestra. Sharp trumpet solo, well-generated sax, zealous guitar with a steady one-two beat & rolling piano notes come together in a masterful arrangement. Bourne’s vocals are a bruised croon, incisive & savvy. Some finger-breaking piano on the upbeat New Orleans-gumbo-oriented “Caffeine Blues.” A well-shaped piece rooted in the ‘40s vocal style. Bourne has strikingly beautiful melodies to go along with his expressive voice. “Three Blind Mice” has a little Dr. John jambalaya vocalizing anchored to a bellowing sax. This isn’t meat & potatoes blues. It’s more espresso cheese cake with a maduro cigar. /John Apice, Americana Highways

JUNO-nominated and Maple Blues Award winning Canadian artist Miss Emily returns with her new album The Medicine. The album is produced by Grammy winner Colin Linden (Keb’ Mo’, Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Gregg Allman, Diana Krall), and is accompanied by the release of the focus track and title song “The Medicine.” The title track is an empathetic plea to understand one of the most complex issues of our time. Written after a family member of an overdose victim reached out to Emily, the song represents the victims and families affected by overdose, offering compassion and solidarity through music.

The new album blends soul, blues, and roots with an all-star line-up of musicians including players from Bob Dylan and Keb’ Mo’s bands. Pairing her thunderous voice with songs of truth and resilience, Miss Emily channels over two decades of raw experience into music that heals and uplifts. Miss Emily’s powerful voice has long been her signature. She is unpredictable, unfiltered, and devoted to her community. For more than 20 years, she has turned her personal struggles into an open invitation for others to connect, share, and heal through music. Whether confronting domestic violence or life as a single mother and working musician, she has always met adversity with honesty and hope.

The Medicine is just that – a collection of soulful, Americana-inspired blues recorded in Nashville with producer Colin Linden and a hand-picked team of musicians. The record features Linden on slide and electric guitar, Keb’ Mo’s keyboardist Michael Hicks on Hammond B3, and George Receli, whose twenty-year run as Bob Dylan’s drummer made him a favourite of Keith Richards. /Blues Matters

Orphan Jon and the Abandoned - Over the Pain

Size: 358 MB

10. Everyone Knows (5:51)
11. Memories of Me and You (4:42)
12. There's No Need (4:56)

The opening track takes no prisoners as Alastair lays down a heavy, rocking riff as Jon describes himself becoming a “hot mess” when confronted by the girl in the “Tight Dress”. The heavy rock tones continue on “She”, another song about a femme fatale, complete with a frenetic solo from Alastair but the pace drops for the title track. “Over The Pain” is a strong cut, Alastair doing his best Peter Green impression at the beginning and end of the song, over which we get to appreciate Jon’s vocal range as he emotes about managing to get “Over The Pain”; the heavier central solo contrasting with the ballad feel of the track. On “Got No Name” Alastair breaks out his slide as Jon sings of tough life on the streets before drummer Ray opens “Broken Angel” with some New Orleans style drum beats, Jon singing about a chance encounter in a bar. The sole cover marks the half way point in the album: “Going Down To Mobile” is from Savoy Brown’s 1972 release Hell Bound Train, Alastair again using slide to good effect on a version that he starts in semi-acoustic mode but really rips it up after the first verse. “Living My Life” is more of a shuffle with relaxed guitar work that again allows us to hear Jon’s range while on “Somewhere Salvation” Alastair doubles up on lead and slide guitars to provide an attractive piece of classic rock. “Redheaded Woman Blues” is an acoustic tune with Alastair’s bottleneck and guest drummer Michael Leasure, but we are quickly back to a full band sound on “Everyone Knows”, the longest cut on the album, allowing Alastair to build an atmospheric backing for Jon to build his vocals about his troubled childhood before heavy rock and slide riffs come in. “Memories Of Me And You” is a slower paced rocker with a torrid guitar solo mid tune and we close with “There’s No Need” which starts slowly with hints of gospel, a feeling that is increased by the revival tent spirit of the later part of the tune as Jon plays the preacher over vibrant organ work from Mike Malone and some freaky guitar tones from Alastair.

Firmly rooted in the blues tradition, Clay Swafford was raised in the small rural community of Providence, Alabama. Born into a musical family, he was immersed in the sounds of Baptist hymnals, country and bluegrass. He took interest in the piano at an early age, and after hearing the music of B.B King and Bobby Blue Bland at age 15 Clay was hooked on the blues.

At 16, he attended the Pinetop Homecoming Celebration and promptly found himself on stage with many of his idols. In 2005 (at the age of 20), the hard work paid off. Clay was asked to be a part of the boogie-woogie piano documentary “Falsifyin” alongside Jerry Lee Lewis, Pinetop Perkins, Marcia Ball, and Henry Gray. Since then Clay has appeared at major festivals all over the south, played regularly with Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and numerous other blues legends, and earned the respect of blues musicians everywhere he played.

Clay’s debut album, “Rooster”, is an electrifying opus of blues traditions and innovations, featuring a stellar cast of guest artists including Blues Music Award winners Diunna Greenleaf, Bob Margolin, and Bob Corritore. The blues world should hold on to their hats. Clay Swafford is bursting onto the scene.

In April 2025, Sugar Ray and the Bluetones descended on Sibculo, The Netherlands, where they spent three days recording at the Natural Records studio. The album was recorded entirely live, without overdubs - just four seasoned musicians who, with all their simplicity, let the blues breathe as it was meant to. The result is “Blues From Sibculo”: a warm, raw, and honest album, steeped in decades of experience and pure playing.

Sugar Ray’s warm vocals and captivating harmonica form the heart of the record, supported by Rusty Zinn’s sparkling guitar lines, Michael “Mudcat” Ward’s deep bass, and Neil Gouvin’s smooth swing on drums. “Blues From Sibculo” feels like being in the studio yourself: intimate, powerful, and unadulteratedly real. A timeless recording that captures the magic of the blues in its purest form.

Singer, harp man and three time Grammy Nominee Sugar Ray Norcia’s career kicked into high gear in 1979 when he formed the original Sugar Ray and the Bluetones with guitar giant Ronnie Earl and it has stayed there ever since. Norcia has received a total of twentytwo Blues Music Award Nominations including winning two Blues Music Awards in 2014 and has appeared on over sixty albums.

In 2012 Ray was inducted into Rhode Island’s Music Hall of Fame. In 2016 Sugar Ray and his band The Bluetones released a CD called “Seeing Is Believing”. Sugar Ray was nominated for an unprecedented seven 2017 Blues Music Awards including Traditional Blues Male Artist and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. /Bluestown Music
