In 1983, Fred Chapellier tries various musical styles but always returns to what he calls the base: "The Blues"! In the early '90s he formed his first blues band "Kashmir", with which he will perform during 4 years. In 1999, he decided to leave on his side to form his ultimate band: "Fred Chapellier Blues Band".

He will record two albums "Blues Devil" in 2003 and "the eye of the blues" in 2005. Critics are more than positive, so much so that in 2004, on the occasion of the "France Blues Trophies" Fred will be named "revelation blues" and "best guitarist" of the year. He has, to date, participated in many other albums as a musician, arranger or producer. In 2007, Fred pays tribute to his guitarist Roy Buchanan on the album "Fred Chapellier & Friends - A Tribute To Roy Buchanan". Billy Price (Singer of Roy Buchanan's band from 1972 to 1976) was agreed to sing on the album. The two men then decide to play together on stage, in November 2007, then in April and July 2008, in France but also in June and September 2008 in the United States. They record together the album "Night Work" in 2009, which will be at the top of the charts in the USA. Then they get on with the Live On Stage Live CD cd / dvd (2010)

He joins Jacques Dutronc on tour in 2010. 2011 is the year of collaborations. Fred shares the stage with his friends Neal Black and Nico Wayne Toussaint for a series of concerts. This project is called BTC Blues Revue (BTC for Black / Toussaint / Chapellier). The same year, Fred and his friend Tom Principato (famous guitarist of Washington DC) meet for a tour of 15 dates and take advantage of it to record a live album entitled "Guitars on fire" released only in the United States at Powerhouse Records.

In February 2012, Fred go to Memphis where he represents France at the International Blues Challenge. He will go to the semi-finals and will be interviewed by Laurent Delahousse on France 2 for a 25-minute report broadcast on the program at 1:15 pm.

FRED releases its brand new album "Electric Fingers" in 2012. November 2014, Fred participates in Vieilles Canailles with Dutronc, Hallyday and Mitchell, for 6 evenings in Bercy. April 2016 marks the release of the last studio album under the name Fred Chapellier, entitled "It never comes easy". Since 2015, Fred has appeared in a quartet and pays homage to the music of Peter Green, the founder of FLEETWOOD MAC. In June-July 2017, Fred goes on tour for 17 concerts with Les Vieilles Canailles (Hallyday, Mitchell and Dutronc).

In parallel with his quartet, Fred is also perform with American singer Dale Blade (Louisiana USA).This new band, titled FRED CHAPELLIER AND THE GENTS FEATURING DALE BLADE, began performing live in April 2017 and has just released their first album called SET ME FREE (Dixiefrog Records).Fred and Dale are already working on their second joint album to be released in 2019.

At the same time, Fred is about to release his live album "Fred Chapellier plays Peter Green", at Dixiefrog records. Official release, October 19, 2018.

If the Blues is the music of one’s life, we can only rejoice of the release of this double CD (combining studio and live recordings) celebrating the 25 first years of Fred Chapelier’s career. It means that this compilation is only a step in a career in progress. Be assured that you will get many more opportunities to praise the outsized talent of such an endearing character.

Meanwhile, enjoy the pleasure to immerse into this beautiful slice of a career whose main asset is certainly consistency. Because Chapellier never had any "warm up period" contrary to some first albums whose sole quality seem to be their very existence. "Blues Devil" in 2003 and "L’œil du Blues" in 2005 have been unanimously hailed for their artistic achievement. Chapellier is world class and it was only natural that, when he joined Dixiefrog in 2007, he paid homage to his world class idol Roy Buchanan ("A Tribute to Roy Buchanan"). A CD considered as a milestone, recorded, of course, with a galaxy of world class musicians: Billy Price, the last lead singer in Buchanan’s band, Neal Black, Tom Principato and Jean-Alain Roussel, also co-producer of the album.

What came next was a magnificent musical journey made up of 8 albums. In some he was calling the shots, such as in "Electric Fingers" and "It Never Comes Easy" when others were shared projects: "Night Work" and "Live on Stage" with Billy Price, "BTC" with Neal Black and Nico Wayne Toussaint or "Set Me Free" with The Gents and excellent vocals by Dale Blade. Not forgetting two live recordings, "Electric Communion" and the fabulous "Fred Chapellier Plays Peter Green", another of Chapellier’s world class idol, Green being the founder of Fleetwood Mac. What an amazing range for this mind blowing guitar player who is also (mostly?) a top songwriter and a natural born Soul singer.

The whole range of his sonic richness is truly remarkable, a fact vividly expressed in the 34 tracks of this double CD (18 studio recordings and 16 songs captured live). If the Blues is the unifying thread of the album, Soul music is never far away and it’s no coincidence that the studio part of the CD opens with an impeccable version of Bobby "Blue" Bland’s "Ain’t No Love In The Heart of the City", Bland being viewed as one of the creators of the Soul Blues genre. As a great news never comes alone, two completely new dazzlings songs grace the album: "I’m A Ram" in the live part and "Beyond The Moon – Part II" in the studio section. Just perfect!

In a dozen albums under his name (some in collaboration with the Americans Neal Black, Tom Principato and Billy Price), Fred CHAPELLIER has emerged in recent years as the new French guitar-slinger. One of the few to federate, among his faithful, blues purists, nostalgic blues-rock from the 70s to 80s, and a certain fringe of the general public. His homage to the immense Peter Green (captured in public in Charleville-Mézières) resonates like a true passage of witness. Because, supreme injustice, who remembers nowadays the decisive contribution of the latter, in the second half of the sixties? Whether it was in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, or at the head of Fleetwood Mac (who was his band, before becoming the cash drawer of rock FM that we know), Peter Green had a major impact on at least two generations of apprentice bluesmen, from Carlos Santana to Allman Brothers, Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy and The Hoax. Guitarist with a touch and tremolo immediately recognizable, and feeling as lyrical as burning, Greeny sank into mental illness at the turn of the seventies, and despite a relative comeback in the 90s, never found either the flame or the recognition he enjoyed at his peak. Now (and probably definitely) recluse in his inner world, the one that nicknamed "the Syd Barrett of British blues" continues to obsess fans of a certain feeling on the skin. As proof, Gary Moore himself did not record the first full album in his tribute ("Blues For Greeny" in 1995) ...? It is with the reinforcement of guests of taste (Ahmed Mouici and Leadfoot Rivet, who share the vocals on half of these 14 beaches, and especially the great Pascal Mikaélian on the harmonica) that Fred CHAPELLIER pays here his tribute to Master of blues angliche boom. The selected repertoire testifies to the deep knowledge that its protagonists attest: "Albatross", "Black Magic Woman" and "Oh Well", certainly, but also the transcendants "Looking For Somebody", "A Fool No More", " Love That Burns "and" Fleetwood Mac Theme ". The unfortunate dolphin Green, Danny Kirwan (died in poverty and insanity on June 8), is not left behind, with an incandescent version of his "Like It This Way" (which appeared half a century ago on the famous "Fleetwood Mac In Chicago").

It takes at least two conditions to tackle such repertoire: first not to be cold in the eyes (or fingers, of course), but also to touch the heart of what is blues. Clearly, Fred CHAPELLIER meets these criteria with emotion and brio: a salutary slap! ~Patrick Dallongeville (Online translation)

During the year 2014 at the Cahors Blues Festival, Fred and I came together to perform a song named “the Clock”, and all started with that song. Time passed by, and three years later, we will actually came together to form a musical project. It was amazing to me coming from America and finding over here the same unique talent that I grew up with as a young New Orleanians. My father who was a R/B singer turned me on to a lot of good good Soul and Blues singers such as CHUCK CARBO, JESSES HILL, FATS DOMINO, LIL MILTON, BB and Albert KING, and Cyril NEVILLE. Over the years I was able to conbined all these great styles and rhythmes to create my own style. Fred saw this in me and I thought of him on the same way with his playing style and musicianship as a band leader. Fred and I both know the necessary things that it takes to make a great band that’s set apart from the rest. With very good work ethics a wide range of musical experience as well as a great chord vocabulary and the voicing of the chord in the music we play opened up new and refreshing experiences in the music and we want to share that with the public. DALE BLADE

This new project is without a doubt the most important of my musical career for several reasons. First of all, the roots of my music come from across the Atlantic, so bringing in vocalist, Dale Blade, a native of New Orleans (and who grew up listening to Professor Longhair and Fats Domino in the clubs on Bourbon street) finally allowed me to come full circle on my musical journey. Next, putting together a new band with musicians who I’ve always wanted to record and tour with, came together in a perfectly natural way. In recent years I have been fortunate enough to work with some of the best American and European Vocalists, from Otis Clay and Billy Price to some big french stars as Jacques Dutronc and Johnny Hallyday. And, believe me, when it comes to Blues and Soul shouters, Dale Blade is as good as it gets !! Having him take over the vocals on this project allowed me the opportunity to devote myself to what I prefer to do and what I do best, compose and play the guitar. This album was a labor of love, I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it. ~FRED CHAPELLIER

"Guitars on Fire" is an outstanding live recording from Tom Principato and his French cohort Fred Chapellier. Recorded in France during one of Tom Principato's regular visits to Europe, "Guitars on Fire" really lives up to its name. It must be said that both musicians deserve high praise for their talent, skill, and execution. With this live CD release, Tom further reinforces his stellar reputation as both an accomplished guitarist and an expressful singer. Fred Chapellier has some great chords up his sleeve, he's got great passion for what he does, and he really holds his own. The two men are actually very well matched in their guitar stylings and singing voices. Well done!

Billy Price & Fred Chapellier - Live On Stage: Night Work Tour

Year: 2010
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 63:53
Size: 146,9 MB
Styles: Electric blues, soul-blues

The transcontinental soul/blues duo of Pittsburgh's Billy Price and France's Fred Chapellier took their show on the road (in Europe) to support the release of the duo's Night Work debut. The results are contained on this CD/DVD package, a logical and energetic follow-up to the studio recording that reprises some - but not all - of those tunes, adds logical covers, and generally ratchets up the sparks, as live albums typically do. The 11-song audio CD runs about half the time of the far more extensive two-hour DVD, but both nail the vibe of shows that featured tough, resilient backing musicians augmented by two horn players.

Covers such as those made famous by Bobby "Blue" Bland (an eight-minute version of "I'll Take Care of You"), Johnnie Taylor ("Last Two Dollars"), and especially O.V. Wright ("A Nickel and a Nail") make terrific additions to the originals and co-writes that appeared on the twosome's previous disc. Al Green's "Love and Happiness", sung on the studio take by guest vocalist Otis Clay, also benefits from Price's emotive singing on the concert adaptation.

Only five tracks are duplicated from Night Work, so those who own it will not only enjoy the more fiery live renditions here, but will get a large helping of the soul and blues classics that clearly inspire both Chapellier and frontman Price. The latter, after decades in the business without finding a lot of popularity, seems to have found a kindred spirit in the guitarist. It might be a bit early for a live album from this pair, but this was a hot ensemble playing an inspired batch of songs, and the performance takes the already exciting studio set to the next level. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

thank you daba for the french-to-english translation of the following review:
The bet was risky: to make the new with the old, but again without fault for Fred Chapellier who offers us an album built from songs from both albums, 'Blues Devil' released in 2003 and "The eye of the Blues' in 2005, and for which the great Fred re-recorded all vocal part and guitars. This gives a second life, a second youth and a pep not possible to titles like 'Danger, TV', 'Concrete Blues' or' It smells of gas', not to mention the excellent 'Enough' s enough 'that begins this new album. For indeed we can talk about the new album, both listening to ten titles aligned on the cake 'return to the beginning of this millennium' you file a beautiful slap. You will find also the sublime 'What the Blues', whose lyrics are signed by the late Poill's (Alain Poirot) and the beautiful 'Not my fault' that closes this opus as if the singer-guitarist had to apologize to offer us such songs that move us neurons, guts and heart.

Is it because he accompanied Jacques Dutronc for his mega-tour 2010 or because he found in Billy Price spark to play more blues blues, it is certain that the great Fred returns with compos in French reworked, finely crafted and that we listen again, rediscovers itself, with great pleasure. A pleasure as we are surprised, by the end of this album, to dip into our CD library to highlight two albums 'original' and send them in their entirety. Notes: 'Night Work', by Pittsburgh-based blue-eyed soul singer Billy Price and French blues guitarist Fred Chapellier, was released in Europe in March 2009. Fans of Price's work in the 1970s with guitarist Roy Buchanan are going to love 'Night Work'. Roy is one of Fred's biggest influences as a guitarist; in fact, Fred's last CD for DixieFrog was titled 'A Tribute to Roy Buchanan', and Billy Price appeared on that CD as a guest vocalist.
Mark Wenner, harmonica player of the Nighthawks, plays on three songs-the title song, written by Mike Sweeney from Pittsburgh; a new version of 'Who You're Working For', which Price recorded with Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band on the 'Free at Last' CD in 1988; and a new song written by Price, Sweeney, Sally Tiven, and Jon Tiven titled 'The Wrong Woman'. Also making a guest appearance on the new CD, singing Al Green's 'Love and Happiness', is Otis Clay.
Price and Chapellier wrote six songs for the new CD, BP Band keyboard player Jimmy Britton and Price wrote one, and Sweeney contributed a great tribute to O.V. Wright. Speaking of O.V. Wright, no Billy Price CD would be complete without at least one O.V. Wright cover. This time, it's 'Don't Let My Baby Ride'.
The CD is a true international collaboration. The Billy Price Band play on most of the tracks, but Fred's great band-Abder Benachour on bass, Pat Machenaud on drums, and Damien Cornelis on keyboards-play on three songs, with horns overdubbed by the Billy Price Band horn section.

Roy Buchanan is one of those guitarists that probably never got the recognition he deserved. French guitarist Fred Chapellier was convinced by his incredible guitar skills from an early age and thus has been a big influence on his playing. The CD fuses some great blues guitar work with songs by Roy Bucanhan, Fred Chappelier and other blues standards. Not many could make a telecaster sing the way Roy Buchanan did.

For this tribute Fred Chapellier explores the guitar legend’s repertoire with the help of some ace musicians. These include Billy Price, former vocalist with The Buchanan Band and Tom Principato, one of Roy’s jamming buddies plus US guitarist Neal Black. Jean Alain Roussel, producer of Roy's final album, played keyboards and was in charge of production A sizzling set with blistering guitar solos and some gentler moments that will get accolades from Roy Buchanan buffs of all continents. If you have never listened to Roy Buchanan, here is a good place to start and then work back through Roy’s catalogue of CDs to hear what made Fred Chapellier say “The sound of a guitar that grabbed my soul and pieced my heart like nothing I had ever heard before.”
