Inarguably the best-known recorded performances by Grammy-winning harmonicist Sugar Blue are his two appearances on the Rolling Stones' Some Girls in 1977 - in particular on the hit "Miss You." (Mick Jagger found him busking on a Paris street.) That said, Blue has become a superstar and first-call sideman who has worked with everyone from Paul Horn, Hiram Bullock, Stan Getz, Prince, and Bob Dylan to Willie Dixon, Son Seals, Johnny Shines, and Shemekia Copeland, to name a few.

He is among the foremost electric harpists of the modern era. Given his proficiency as an improviser and his high-register runs, circular breathing, and electronic effects, Sugar Blue is regarded by music journalists as "the Jimi Hendrix of the harmonica" and a "harp pyrotechnician." Though he records infrequently as a leader, his 1979 debut Crossroads and 1994's In Your Eyes, are regarded as essential modern electric blues offerings. His 2012 live date, Raw Sugar from Beeble Music, is among the first harmonica blues "essentials" of the 21st century. In 2016, Blue issued the charting Blue Voyage.

Sugar Blue was born James Whiting in New York City in 1950. The son of a singer/dancer who regularly performed at the legendary Apollo Theater, he was given his first harmonica at the age of ten, and by his mid-teens had already performed in the company of Muddy Waters; in the early '70s he made his first recordings, sitting in on sessions by the likes of Johnny Shines and Louisiana Red. Sugar Blue relocated to Paris in 1976, where he was introduced to the Rolling Stones; he went on to play on the group's LPs Some Girls, Emotional Rescue, and Tattoo You, lending his skills to such hits as "Miss You."

He also played on jazz dates for Stan Getz and Paul Horn, and in 1979 cut the solo efforts Crossroads and From Paris to Chicago in 1982. In 1985, Blue won a Grammy Award for his participation on the Atlantic compilation Blues Explosion. Upon returning to the U.S. in the mid-'80s, Sugar Blue settled in Chicago, and after signing to Alligator, he cut Blue Blazes in 1994, followed a year later by In Your Eyes. Over the coming years he continued to perform and tour, though it would be 12 years before his next album, 2007's Code Blue, was released. Threshold appeared in 2010, followed two years later by the live album Raw Sugar.

2016 would prove to be a banner year for the veteran bluesman, with the release of a new studio album called Voyage, a world tour, and an appearance in the documentary film Sidemen, A Long Road to Glory. Restlessness is a chronic state for Blue, who continually seeks new sounds and studios to record in. For 2019's Colors, he wrote and recorded on four continents, U.S. (Chicago), China (Beijing), Europe (Italy), and Africa (South Africa). /Biography by Jason Ankeny, AllMusic

Sugar Blue - Blue Blazes

7. Country Blues (5:22)
8. Back Door Man (7:02)
9. Just To Be With You (6:31)
10. Out Till Dawn (9:21)

Harmonica player and vocalist Sugar Blue isn't a singer who doubles on harp; he's an extraordinary instrumentalist who's also a quality vocalist. Blue covers tunes by Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, James Cotton and Sonny Boy Williamson (II) classics, presents a decent, if disposable version of The Rolling Stones' "Miss You," and adds the good-natured original "Country Blues," co-written with his guitarist Motaoaki Makino. But it's those harmonica lines and phrases that make the CD. One of Alligator's best contemporary albums in a long time. /Ron Wynn, AllMusic

Louisiana Red had made his first English appearance at the end of 1977. Red was the artist who said: "Give me some money and let's make an album." I thought: "And let's make it live." Red told me about this amazing harmonica player living in Paris, Sugar Blue. We made contact and booked him a train ticket. He arrived in London and told this amazing tale of being discovered on the streets of Paris by The Rolling Stones. And so to the 100 Club. Red and Blue set forth on stage to make the album. Some songs from Red solo and some with Blue adding harmonica. This album is a document of an evening in London that will never come again.

Grammy Award-winning harmonica virtuoso Sugar Blue is not your typical bluesman...

Born James Whiting - he was raised in Harlem, New York, where his mother was a singer and dancer at the fabled Apollo Theatre. He spent his childhood among the musicians and show people who knew his mother, including the great Billie Holiday, and decided that he wanted to be a performer.

Blue received his first harmonica from his aunt, and proceeded to hone his chops by wailing along with Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder songs on the radio, he was soon to be influenced by the jazz greats such as Dexter Gordon and Lester Young.
Sugar Blue has used this background to his advantage, creating an ultra-modern blues style and sound that is instantly recognizable as his own.

Blue began his career as a street musician and made his first recordings in 1975 with legendary blues figures Brownie McGhee and Roosevelt Sykes. The following year, he contributed to recordings by Victoria Spivey and Johnny Shines before pulling up stakes and moving to Paris on the advice of pioneer blues pianist Memphis Slim .

While in France, Blue hooked up with members of the Rolling Stones , who instantly fell in love with his sound. The Stones invited Blue to join them in the studio. Besides his work on the Some Girls album, he can be heard on Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You . He appeared live with the group on numerous occasions and was offered the session spot indefinitely, but he turned it down, opting instead to return to the States and put his own band together rather than became a full-time sideman. Before returning to the U.S. in 1982, Blue cut a pair of albums, Crossroads and From Paris to Chicago.

Blue's decision to return home, despite his growing renown as a session player was spurred by his desire to work with and learn from the masters of blues harmonica. Thus he came to Chicago and proceeded to sit in with the likes of Big Walter Horton, Carey Bell, James Cotton and Junior Wells. Blue went on to spend two years touring with his friend and mentor Willie Dixon as part of the Chicago Blues All Stars before putting his own band together in 1983. With his own band, Blue's star continued to rise. He received the 1985 Grammy Award for his work on the Atlantic album, Blues Explosion, recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

He recorded on Dixon's Grammy-winningHidden Charms album in 1989, has performed on festival stages with classic artists like Muddy Waters, B.B. King , Art Blakey and Lionel Hampton and has also set his sights on television and the big screen. He sat in with Fats Domino, Ray Charles, and Jerry Lee Lewis for the Cinemax special, Fats Domino and Friends, and has appeared on screen and in the musical score of Alan Parker's acclaimed 1987 thriller Angel Heart, starring Robert De Niro.

Blue has played and recorded with musicians ranging from Willie Dixon to Stan Getz to Frank Zappa to Johnny Shines to Bob Dylan , he is perhaps best known for his signature riff and solo on the Rolling Stones' hit Miss You from their Some Girls album. Blue performs his own version of the song on his 1993 Alligator debut BLUE BLAZES. With his second release IN YOUR EYES Sugar Blue emerges as a singularly profound songwriter as well as a harmonica wizard.

He has appeared across America, Europe and Africa at many prestigious venues and festivals - Chicago, Montreuz Jazz, Antibes, Nice, Cannes, Montreal, Pistoia, Bern, Rapperswil, Blue Note, Lincoln Jazz Center... Blue continues to appear in clubs and festivals around the world.

09. Living Fast (4:11)
10. Second Hand Woman (4:05)
11. One Big Frown (3:54)
12. Moment Of Silence (5:16)

Drop The Hammer” is a culmination of Kenny’s true vision. The lyrics, arrangements, sounds, and feel are a direct result of his life experiences as a musician and simply a person who grew up in the same house where Muddy Waters once lived in Chicago. Kenny is giving you his music on his terms, literally a piece of his being and soul.

Kenny Smith was unquestionably born into blues royalty. He grew up in the same house where Muddy Waters once lived in Chicago, the home of the blues. Throughout his childhood, Kenny was surrounded by Muddy and his friends, which included his own father, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith (1936-2011). These same blues icons helped mold him into the person and drummer he is today and later in life asked him to provide his famous backbeat on some of the largest and most respected stages and recordings in the world. Kenny has played over 9,500 live performances to date and has earned the right to wear that royal blues crown. His father, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, played drums for the Muddy Waters’ Band in the early 1960’s and then again from 1968 through 1980 and was featured on all of Muddy’s Grammy winning albums. Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith, one of the best known living blues drummers today, learned 99% of what he knows about drumming from his father and was also inspired by acclaimed drummers: Odie Payne, Fred Below, Earl Phillips, Louie Bellson, S.P. Leary, Francis Clay and Art Blakey, Sonny Payne, Clifton James and many others who paved the way. And with those experiences Kenny has revitalized and created new interpretations of the blues drummers as he pushes blues drumming to new innovative and tradition styles.

Musicians include Greg Guy, son of blues legend and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Buddy Guy; Sugar Blue, world renowned harmonica player who has recorded with the Rolling Stones; Felton Crews one of Chicago's top bass players who has toured with jazz great Miles Davis and blues musician Charlie Musselwhite; Billy Flynn on guitar; Guy King on guitar; Ari Seder on guitar; Luca Chiellini on piano, organ, and keyboard; Omar Coleman on harmonica; Nelson Strange on guitar and Andrea Miologos, Dana Gordon and Kim Johnson- bring fierce and colorful vocals to each and every song.

Sugar Blue is a powerful and fluent harmonica player who is also an effective and heartfelt singer, in addition to being a superior writer of blues-oriented songs. On Code Blue he not only sings about love won, lost, and misunderstood but warns against cocaine, discusses the blues life, talks about the frustrations of the world ("I Don't Know Why"), and pays tribute to the destroyed New Orleans.

His backup band is excellent with some heated guitar solos heard along the way, but Sugar Blue is the main star, having composed or co-written all 11 songs. His words are often insightful and contain some surprises, making this bluish set quite fresh and important. /Scott Yanow, AllMusic

Besides his work on the Some Girls album,he can be heard on Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You. He recorded on Dixon's Grammy-winning Hidden Charms album in 1989 and has performed on festival stages with classic artists like Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Art Blakey and Lionel Hampton. Sugar has also set his sights on television and the big screen.

2016 will be a banner year for Sugar Blue with his first studio recording coming out in five years, a world-wide tour and appearing in a new movie. Sugar Blue will be in the film Sidemen, A Long Road To Glory. It will premiere at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival. In 1978, one of my favorite songs was the Rolling Stones, "Miss You", off their Chart Topping album "Some Girls". The Harmonica playing on that song, also one of my favorite parts of the song, was courtesy of Sugar Blue, "who according to Ronnie Wood, was found while busking on the streets of Paris." Now 34 years later, I once again have the renewed excitement of listening to "Miss You", this time courtesy of Sugar Blue's sweet new double album release, "Raw Sugar" Live.

Double Live albums have been a favorite of mine since hearing Grand Funk Railroad's 1970 "Live Album", and then later on in the 70's receiving Peter Frampton's "Frampton Comes Alive", for my birthday in 1976. I still have both those albums and still enjoy playing them on a regular basis. Now after listening to "Raw Sugar" Live, I got a pretty good idea that this one will also be played on a regular basis for many years to come, as well.

Sugar Blue has often been called the Jimi Hendrix of the Harmonica, and not long into "Raw Sugar" Live, you will certainly know why. Sugar Blue has played and recorded with many of the greats, including Roosevelt Sykes, Willie Dixon, Brownie McGhee, Victoria Spivey, Johnny Shines, Big Walter Horton, James Cotton, and Junior Wells, to name but a few. I was thoroughly amazed when I read his Bio and I invite all of you to also take a few moments to read it, as it is quite amazing.

"Raw Sugar" Live is Sugar Blue's 7th album, and was recorded during their 2011 US Tour. It consists of 13 Tracks of which 7 are originals either written or co-written by Sugar Blue, under the name he was born with, James Whiting. Sugar Blue was a name he decided to call himself after looking through a bunch of 78's that were discarded in a dumpster, from which one was called Sugar Blues by Sidney Bechet.

For the covers on "Raw Sugar" Live, Sugar Blue chose some dandies and included Mud Morganfield's "One More Mile", Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man", Mel London's "Messin' With The Kid" a song first recorded by Junior Wells, and of course Mick Jagger & Keith Richards "Miss You", to name 4 of the covers.

As a double live album, "Raw Sugar" Live clocks in at over 2 hours, which when you consider the fact that it only contains 13 Tracks, you are guaranteed some really great long jamming style songs. For instance, there is Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man", a song traditionally done in the 4 minute range, but on this album it clocks in at an epic 14:19. Stretching out these great tunes, allows for 2 things to happen, with the first being that it really allows one to get grooving in a song, which for short more conventional songs sometimes end before you know it. The second thing is that extended play means extended time for the other musicians to get a chance to really show there stuff which, for "Raw Sugar" Live, featured Rico McFarland (Guitar), James Knowles (Drums), Haria Lantieri (Bass), and Damiano Della Torre (Keyboards). Haria Lantieri also co-wrote several songs with Sugar Blue on this album.

I found "Raw Sugar" Live to be just an absolutely great and fun listen from start to finish. It has everything you could want from a double live album, great music, a great live feel like you are right there in the audience, and great humorous banter with the audience at the beginning of most of the Tracks.

I am really super grateful for Sugar Blue tracking me down and sending me this treasure.

Fans of really great live albums, especially those featuring stellar Harp playing, are really going to love "Raw Sugar" Live.

Highly Recommended and Thoroughly Enjoyed... ~Review by John Vermilyea (Blues Underground Network)
