J. Howard Duff's long musical journey began in the New York/New Jersey metro area. He formed the J. Howard Duff Band in the 1970s, playing with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Blackfoot, Todd Rundgren, and the J. Geils Band. In the 1980s, he and his wife Dawn formed the infamous punk band, Partners In Crime, whose records entered the top 20 Indie charts worldwide. After moving to South Carolina in the late 1990s, he went back to his original blues roots, playing solo and as an acoustic guitarist and vocalist for the duo, Metro Blues, releasing a critically acclaimed CD.
In January of 2006, a major change occurred in Howard’s life. That change came courtesy of Jesus Christ. This event changed everything. “Being saved,” said Howard, “moved my musical passion to the next, and a much higher level.” He began playing with the Praise Band, at the Church of the Cross in Bluffton and later, became a worship leader there. Howard has a gift for teaching and mentoring, and making it fun, as evidenced by his loyal and enthusiastic guitar students who range in age from 9 to 65. Howard recently marked his 50th anniversary as guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. He is the lead singer/lead guitarist in one of the South’s premier blues and swing groups, Red, White & Blues. He also handles the dual lead roles in the 1960s retro rock ’n’ roll band, Flashback. He sang lead for the South Carolina rock & blues group, The Chilly Willy Band. In addition J. Howard Duff is always honored to play solo whenever and wherever he can.
Recently, Howard suffered two 90% blockages in his heart, which resulted in a surgical procedure with subsequent complications. The prescriptions needed are very expensive. This, plus the fact that Howard is not yet able to resume his normal full schedule as a self-employed musician and instructor, has caused undue financial hardship and stress.
