Rarely does one hear such urban blues from a contemporary, white, European musician as with this current CD recording by Dutchman Hans Theessink, who lives in Vienna. “I heard Big Bill Broonzy and Leadbelly on the radio in the early '60s. I was totally hooked on this music,” explains Theessink on “Big Bill's Guitar,” the key track off the album. And unlike some other bluesmen who like to throw such a reference into the room, this guitarist and singer has actually learned something from the early masters of black music: Theessink brings his own compositions as well as the songs of a Blind Lemon Jefferson, Skip James or Lightnin' Hopkins so authentically, so convincingly, that at least the audible guitar sounds give the impression that one of the mentors is personally at work. Hans Theessink has also found his own style on the vocal side. Luckily he doesn't even try to imitate a black timbre, so the result is an unpretentious, unsophisticated-sounding vocal work.

On this release, Dutch singer and multi-instrumentalist Hans Theessink has assembled 13 stellar cuts of blues, roots rock and gospel. With a warm, expressive voice that alternately recalls J.J.Cale and rocker Chris Rea, Theessink leads the listener through many different tales. Theessink is an engaging storyteller who makes the tunes feel like long last friends. As engaging as the vocals and lyrics are, the music on this disc is what makes it stand out from the crowd. With an instrumental lineup featuring Theessink’s multiple strings as well as a tuba, piano, dobro, accordion, tenor and alto sax, B-3, drums, washboard and percussion compliments of such noted musicians as Marcia Ball, Cindy Cashdollar, Ponty Bone, Richard Bell, Rocky Morales, Ali Thelfa and Jon Sass mixed together in various combinations, the disc has a unique, organic roots sound. While the blues inform most of the tunes, roots rock and especially gospel are major influences as well. In fact, the strong gospel-inflected harmony provided by Terry Evans, Ray Williams, Willie Green Jr., Olivia Reese, Janet Kyle and Birdia Williams-Miller adds a buoyancy to several of the cuts including „Power of Love“, „Homecookin‘ „ and „Roll with the Punches,“ that makes them stand out as highlights. Based on the strength of this release, the record stores had better make room for the balance of Theessink’s deep catalog.

For Call Me I invited Canadian producer Colin Linden as a co-producer. I had been playing a lot at festivals in N.America and wanted to invite some of the musicians and singers that I`d met on my travels. Most of the backing vocals were sung by the fantastic Bobby King & Terry Evans (wellknown from their work with Ry Cooder). With Maceo Parker, Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley we had one of the funkiest horn sections in the universe. In addition we had Garth Hudson, Richard Bell and Rick Danko of "The Band", and South African sax-and pennywhistle wizzard Morris Goldberg on board. We worked at studios in Munich, Woodstock and Los Angeles, hauling the big old tapes around. The work on CALL ME was a beautiful experience and a few of my most requested songs are included on the album: My own "Call Me", "Rock The boat" and Chuck Berry`s "Mabellene". HT We`ve already had an American in Paris, but a Dutchman in Vienna? And one who has dedicated himself, body and soul, to American blues and roots music? The Dutchman Hans Theessink, born in Enschede, is one of the most respected blues musicians in the world. Bo Diddley called him a 'helluva guitar player'. He performs two hundred times a year and gave 'acte de presence' at all major blues festivals. Bridges is already his eighteenth album since his debut EP in 1970. Theessink is a true citizen of the world and during his many tours he meets musicians everywhere. Hans Theessink's music is difficult to categorize. If you say it's blues, you're partly right, because his music clearly has its roots in the blues. Yet he transcends the genre with ease. You can call it folk blues, or world blues, and then you come a little closer. Theessink does not rely on volume or roughness. His music makes a very relaxed impression, but when you play Bridges, his latest CD, you notice that you are always on the edge of your seat listening, because the music may come across as relaxed, but in the meantime it is also unheard of exciting. It's a shame when the record is over. Gentle blues is perhaps a good description. Theessink wrote almost all the songs for this album himself. Exceptions are Get Ready by Curtis Mayfield and Mbube by Solomon Linda. We know the latter song mainly as Wimoweh, or The Lion Sleeps Tonight, but here the song is beautifully brought back to where it came from, thanks in part to the trio Insingizi, who do the African vocals. That trio also sings along on many other songs, and just like the great band, gives the album considerable added value. No one needs to be emphatically in the foreground if necessary, you can actually always hear that a club of people is working here that always puts the music first. They listen to each other very well and play together very inventively and subtly. The drummer, for example, is by no means a woodcutter, but someone who manages to play both subtly and firmly. Some songs seem to ripple calmly at first hearing, but precisely because everyone is playing very sharply, the arc stays just right throughout the song. For me they could have kept up that tension a little longer and just like Eric Andersen on his last album, for example, let a song last twenty minutes, or longer. A song like Rain, which lasts more than seven minutes, doesn't bore me when it's over. Theessink's own songs are all good. That means you could also call him a very good singer/songwriter. The CD Bridges is an absolute must, which, like any really good record, gets better with every spin. All this makes this CD world class in more ways than one!

Hans Theessink - Baby Wants To Boogie

Hans Theessink often gets the short end of the stick because he's a Dutch bluesman, which means he couldn't possibly be "legitimate" in the eyes of some critics. That's not really fair, since he's actually an imaginative, unpredictable guitarist. Granted, his albums can sound a little sterile, but that criticism can be applied to most contemporary blues albums. The main problem with his records is that they're interchangeable -- all of them sound similar and all of them are about as strong as their predecessor. Baby Wants to Boogie isn't particularly different from his other albums, but it does have some good songs and solos, making it as good a place to learn about Theessink as any.

Hans Theessink and Big Daddy Wilson are charismatic entertainers and soulful performers that have made a name for themselves as musicians and songwriters. Both Theessink and Wilson are very popular performers on the blues & roots circuit. Both have many albums to their name.
PAY DAY is their first duo album. Hans Theessink is known as a sensitive virtuoso on almost anything with strings on it and Wilson can be relied on as a rock steady percussionist; but the icing on the cake is the vocal interplay of Theessink and Wilson that really makes “PAY DAY” a terrific album.
“PAY DAY” is a twist of fate. These two guys had to meet and get together. Their vocal dialogues - be it blues, roots, folk or gospel - merge as if they had never done anything else.

For many, many years I’ve been wanting to work with Hans. It was one of the most beautiful experiences that I ever had as an artist. (Big Daddy Wilson).
I really enjoyed singing and playing with Wilson - we had a ball. Wilson and I had picked songs for the session – some old, some new, some borrowed. We had lots of fun cooking up our special musical stew with all the natural ingredients, spices and flavors - enjoy! (Hans Theessink).
Theessink and Wilson discovered the blues in completely different ways.
On the one hand there is the Dutch boy, who’s love and fascination for blues and roots-music got ignited when he heard Big Bill Broonzy on late night radio in his native Holland - a “white boy lost in the blues” who’s been on the blues trail for more than 50 years.
On the other hand, the North Carolina born African American who first got exposed to the music of his ancestors as a US soldier, stationed in Germany - a "stranger far from home" who has come full circle.

Austria-based acoustic and electric folk musician and bluesman brings a freshness of appreciation to the American blues idiom, whether it's classic blues from the '20s and '30s or more modern urban blues from Chicago from the '50s and '60s. Theessink's discography of more than 20 albums -- all released in Europe -- includes his fresh takes on songs by Chuck Berry, John Fogerty, and Jimmy Cliff as well as more familiar blues fare by Rufus Thomas, Willie Dixon, Leadbelly, and even country icon Hank Williams. Aside from singing blues, country, and pioneering rock & roll songs well, he also includes gospel tunes in many of his live shows and on his albums.

Theessink began playing guitar in his teens, and by the mid-'60s he was part of a skiffle group. Skiffle music was quite popular in Ireland and England and other parts of Europe at that time, but once he heard Big Bill Broonzy perform on Radio Luxembourg, he had a revelation. He had never heard the guitar played so well by just one person, so it opened his eyes to the possibilities that blues and blues-based musics could offer. He made a splash on the U.S. folk festival circuit in the late '80s, and Chicago-based Flying Fish Records issued his American debut, Baby Wants to Boogie (1987), which Theessink later re-released on his own label. A big part of Theessink's appeal as a performer and recording artist is his approach to cover songs. Rather than cover a Willie Dixon or Robert Johnson song to sound like the original artist might, Theessink takes an old gospel standard like "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," polishes it up, and makes it shine in his own way. His original songs offer up an outsider's perspective on places and things around the South that too many Americans take for granted.

Among Theessink's many fine albums are the aforementioned Baby Wants to Boogie, Hard Road Blues (1995), Journey On (1997), Bridges (2004), Songs from the Southland (2004), Slow Train (2007), Visions (2008), Delta Time (2012), the latter of which was a collaboration with Ry Cooder and Terry Evans, and the 2015 concert LP True & Blue. All of these albums were released on his own Blue Groove Records label, and may be difficult to find in U.S. record stores, even ones specializing in jazz and blues. Theessink is based in Vienna, Austria when he's not on the road, and he continues to tour frequently around Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. He gets back to the U.S. every two or three years to perform at folk and blues festivals and clubs. ~Richard Skelly

Hans Theessink could be the most creative musician working the blues idiom in Europe. He uses somewhat minimal instrumental arrangements to emphasize the vocals and his bluesy sensibility is turned to creating funky, pulsing grooves and compelling dynamics. It's impossible not to tap your toes to this music. Hans Theessink is in that select group of artists such as John Hammond, Paul Geremia and Rory Block, whom all share the responsibility for preserving and enriching the styles of the old masters. He moves your soul like a good confession. This man has a special gift. When he puts the slide on his pinky, he takes the audience right to the heart of it all.

Theessink's first recording was an EP in 1970. Since then his music has continually developed and so far Hans has released 20 albums, a songbook, a blues-guitar instruction video and a DVD. His CDs are guaranteed award winners. "Banjoman", the tribute project to Derroll Adams, that Hans produced with Arlo Guthrie, was recently nominated for a Grammy.
In 2004 Hans got the Austrian Amadeus award for "Songs from the Southland", a tribute to the music of the American South - a constant source of inspiration and companion on his musical journey. A Danish Music Award for best bluesalbum followed in 2005. His most recent CD "Bridges" - a recording with the new Hans Theessink Band, is again nominated for the Amadeus in the category best Blues-, Jazz-, Roots-, Folk-album. Hans' latest work is a DVD "Live in Concert" - "A Blues & Roots Revue" - it shows the Hans Theessink Band in action + lots of other special features. Hans' productions are known for their excellent sound quality and are also in big demand in HiFi circles.

Through his unmistakable guitarwork, sonorous baritone voice and stage presence, Hans has attained a status which is unique for a European. He has performed at many of the most prominent North American music festivals such as the "New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival", the "Chicago Blues Festival", the "Kerville Folk Festival", the "Toronto Soul & Blues Festival", the "Kansas City Blues & Jazz Festival", the "Edmonton Folk Festival", the "St.Louis Blues & Heritage Festival", the "King Biscuit Blues Festival", the "Woody Guthrie Festival" and the "Ultimate Rhythm and Blues Cruise" to name a few.

Hans Theessink has become one of the most sought-after artists of the international blues scene. He is more or less constantly "on tour" and plays an average of 200 concerts a year - a modern day troubadour and entertainer who keeps on spellbinding audiences all over the world with his rich and emotional sounds.

“TRUE & BLUE“ the new CD by Hans Theessink & Terry Evans is a naked and intimate, bare to the bone, live recording, that leaves a lot of space for Hans‘ and Terry’s expressive voices and instruments. This is handmade roots music at it’s best: True & Blue

“True & Blue” was recorded live in Vienna – Terry and Hans were in great form and the crowd was ready for a steaming night of timeless blues-, gospel- and soul related music, coming to live in the capable hands of these two masters. With just two guitars, and two remarkable voices they bring forth honest and straightforward power in a stripped-down musical situation – an unhurried vibe that’s contagious and flows with the easy rhythm of buddies with mutual respect, having a blast singing and playing together.

Held annually at Basil's Bar with a stage surrounded on three sides by clear turquoise water, the event raises money for an educational charity on neighbouring St Vincent.

A selection of some of the best recorded performances from 15 years of festivals with tracks from Gillespie herself, Eugene “Hideaway” Bridges, Larry Garner, Joe Louis Walker and others.
