He was in the midst of recording a new studio album and planning future projects when his life was suddenly cut short in 2019.

Now, three years after his untimely passing, in a world complicated by COVID-19, Things Happen That Way will see the light of day. The album, which features three brand new original compositions, a mesmerizing reworking of Dr. John’s 1968 classic “I Walk on Guilded Splinters, and new interpretations of songs by Willie Nelson, Cowboy Jack Clement, Hank Williams, and the Traveling Wilburys.

Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Spencer Bohren is from Wyoming but is often associated with the Crescent City, as he lived there for a number of years and continues to prove a popular club attraction there. Brought up in a strict Baptist family, Bohren sang harmonies in church, and it was his passion for gospel music that led him to become an equally diligent student of blues. He left Wyoming in 1968 for the folk scene around Denver. At the Denver Folklore Center and in coffeehouses, he learned acoustic folk-blues firsthand from people like the Rev. Gary Davis before moving to Seattle, where he played with a series of blues bands and continued to hone his songwriting abilities. In 1973, he moved back to Colorado to play with folk-blues singer Judy Roderick, and after talking extensively with Dr. John one night, he decided to move to New Orleans, where Dr. John was born and raised. Bohren spent a decade there, playing clubs like Tipitina's and the Absinthe Bar. In 1983, Bohren and his family began a seven-year journey on the road in an Airstream RV; Bohren performed all over the U.S., and later began to tour extensively in Europe and Japan. In 1989, Bohren had a Top 40 hit in Sweden. Although his discography is quite extensive and Bohren has been presented at many large festivals around the U.S. and Europe, a major-label deal in the U.S. still eludes him.

09. The Hunt Is On (3:49)
10. A World I Never Made (3:53)

Although calling Johnny Adams a blues singer is far too confining, he's certainly among the finest to perform in that idiom. He's equally brilliant at slow or uptempo numbers, can effectively convey irony, heartache, or triumph, and is a masterful storyteller. These ten blues numbers cover every emotional base, allowing Adams a chance to show his proficiency. With great support from an instrumental corps that includes guitarists Walter "Wolfman" Washington and Duke Robillard, keyboardist Dr. John, and saxophonists Red Tyler and Foots Samuel, plus Ernie Gautreau on valve trombone, Adams didn't just cut a blues album, he made unforgettable blues statements. ~Ron Wynn

A Lost Treasure from the Legendary Dr. John - ‘Big Band Voodoo' Captures Mac with the WDR Big Band, Recorded in Germany in 1995

Long-Time Friend and Manager Stanley Chaisson Unearths a Gem, One of the Most Interesting Yet Unreleased Sessions from Dr. John's Repertoire

Dr. John was a larger than life character on the music scene. From his distinctive sound to his iconic look to his memorable stage performances, Dr. John embodied New Orleans, even as he blurred the lines between R&B, rock, blues, funk, boogie-woogie, and now, big band jazz. On his upcoming album, ‘Big Band Voodoo', out 11/1 on Orange Music, Mac's long-time friend and manager Stanley Chaisson has captured a moment in time, and we are all the better for it.

Recorded in 1995 with Germany's WDR Big Band, the upcoming album features 16 tracks, and Dr. John arguably has never sounded better. His vocals are crisp and clear and joyful, as if he turned back the clock to another time and to a jubilant state of mind.

2 CD 2019 Release featuring Dr. John's early singles pre-Atlantic Records and live concert recordings previously unreleased in North American and Japan. This new retrospective includes rarities from the Rex, Ace, Crazy Cajun labels, and rare live band and solo performances of Dr. John's greatest hits. Dr. John's music is stamped with the rhythms and traditions of the Crescent City, and he has spent a career that now spans more than half a century championing its music. Born Malcolm John 'Mac' Rebennack, he learned piano and guitar as a child. As a child growing up in the 1940s, he was steeped in the music of the city. 'It was a special time in New Orleans,' he told USA Today's Edna Gunderson. 'The radio stations played basically New Orleans music, and I thought that was what the whole world heard.' As a musician, he was schooled by local legends like Walter 'Papoose' Nelson (Professor Longhair's guitarist), guitarist Roy Montrell, keyboardist James Booker and Cosimo Matassa (whose J&M Studio was the hub of the city's recording scene). Rebennack became one of the first white session men on the local scene. Working in L.A. with producer Harold Battiste, a fellow Crescent City expatriate, he created the character of Dr. John the Night Tripper, a voodoo sorcerer and healer. His first album, Gris-Gris, masterfully evoked the mystical spirit of back-alley voodoo in a musical setting of otherworldly 'N'Awlins' swamp funk. It meshed perfectly with the age of psychedelia in which it was released. Such cuts as 'I Walk on Gilded Splinters' evoked a late-night, back-streets netherworld of ritual and mystery. Until his untimely passing on June 6th of this year, Dr. John continued to keep the Crescent City's musical heritage alive.

Dr. John - Trippin' Live

10. 24 Hours A Day, 365 A Year (Feat. Jools Holland) (Live) (6:42)
11. Goodnight Irene (Live) (9:34)

Trippin’ Live captures Dr John in fine form, and is probably one of the finest representations of his inimitable New Orleans piano playing and distinguished musicianship.

Recorded at Ronnie Scott’s in 1996, the intimate feel and Mac’s relaxed good mood, give the recording a late-evening warmth. Backed by a tight band, with a horn section which really brings out the groove of the songs, the Dr plays a strong set-list. Naturally this is drawn largely from his crescent city heritage (this was before his tentative return to his legacy of the ‘Nite Tripper’), kicking off with a lively version of ‘Tipitina’ which gives him plenty of room for rolling the ivories. He also revisits 2 of his big numbers, ‘Right Place, Wrong Time’, and ‘Such a Night’, the latter being the real highlight as he incorporates numerous solos and riffs on the piano. With ‘Wild Honey’ and ‘Renegade’ his playing leads the band down to its funkiest grooves, while ‘My Buddy’ eases into his sentimental side, and he even plays lead guitar (while Jools Holland fills in on the keys) on ‘24 Hours of the Day’. The album is brought to a close with a spirited reading of Leadbelly’s classic ‘Goodnight Irene’.

In my opinion there’s not a weak song on the album; I've listened to it many times. The performances are lively, but overall it is his piano playing which really makes it a treat, and there are many great solos. Although the swampy Nite-Tripper does not appear, Dr John the eclectic New Orleans musician, singer and stylist is very well represented. ~Sleepy Green-Tea

10. Things Ain't What They Used To Be (6:25)
11. Caravan (6:24)
12. Flaming Sword (5:45)

Duke Elegant certainly wasn't the only tribute to Duke Ellington put out in honor of the 100th anniversary of the legendary bandleader, nor was it even the first time Dr. John had tackled his material. But it would be hard to find a better homage than this one. Dr. John proves a surprisingly good match for Ellington's material, placing a tremendously funky foundation under the composer's tunes.

The sound is dominated by the good doctor's incomparable New Orleans piano and organ, naturally, and the best tracks are those whose melodies are carried solely by his keyboard work, such as instrumentals "Caravan" and "Things Ain't What They Used to Be." The vocal cuts are fine - his takes on the Ellington ballad "Solitude" and especially the dreamy, elegant "Mood Indigo" show off Dr. John's uniquely expressive voice as well as any of his early-era recordings - though he occasionally tends to approach self-caricature, as on "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)."

Any weakness, however, is more than made up for by the closing rearrangement of "Flaming Sword," one of three Ellington rarities here. Dr. John transforms the instrumental into a luminous, gorgeously melodic display of Professor Longhair-style piano over an astonishingly sexy New Orleans funk rhythm. Ultimately, Duke Elegant holds up both as an innovative twist on the Ellington songbook and as a solid Dr. John album in its own right. /Kenneth Bays, AllMusic

Including selections from Duke Elegant, Creole Moon, N'Awlinz: Dis Dat or D'Udda, and Anutha Zone, as well as two bonus tracks, The Best of the Parlophone Years presents Dr. John doin' what he does best. With that voice, there's no mistake who's settin' down the blues for ya. There are only a handful of voices in history which have been so widely recognized and so easy to tell from the rest. Writers have suggested that Howard Cosell, Muhammad Ali, Lou Rawls, Barry White, Johnny Cash, and Louis Armstrong stand apart for their one-in-a-million vocal characteristics. Add Dr. John to that list. His gravel throat and his voodoo storytellin' reach out, surround you, and take you on one adventure after another.

"Careless Love" comes from the same recording session as N'Awlinz: Dis Dat or D'Udda, but it was not previously issued. On this traditional selection, synchronized horns, crisp drum backbeats, and a romping electric bass surround the singer as he slowly pours out golden threads of honey that enchant intuitively. The other bonus track is "Look Out," an original that was previously available on the Japanese version of Anutha Zone. With this anthem, Dr. John carries blues-rock to its maximum strength with an intense study that starts your feet tappin' and the rest of your body movin' around. "Look Out," you can't help it.

B.B. King and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown join Dr. John on "Hen Layin' Rooster," a rollicking, double-entendre blues that puts a smile on your face. Randy Newman joins the leader on "I Ate Up the Apple Tree," a fun-loving shuffle that features an excellent array of horns and choir. The spirit is there, and Dr. John makes sure that everything falls into place with a natural essence.

"Sweet Home New Orleans" provides the exotic character that we associate with The City that Care Forgot. Dr. John makes his audience quite comfortable with a rollicking piano and a stomp that won't quit. For ambience, he's the one to turn to, and Blue Note's compilation brings it home like no other. ~Jim Santella

On Dr. John's first major-label effort, and first vocal studio album in ten years, he performs a set of pop standards including Cole Porter's "Love for Sale" and Johnny Mercer's "Accentuate the Positive." After starting out with a wild stage act and unusual costumes, Dr. John has evolved into a vocal stylist and piano virtuoso, which makes the idea of doing this sort of material appealing. And he does it well, turning out a leisurely duet with Rickie Lee Jones on "Makin' Whoopee" that won a Grammy (Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group), and giving sad feeling to "My Buddy." Maybe he has changed since the Gris Gris days, but even a mellowed Dr. John is a tasty one. ~William Ruhlmann

Dr. John's debut for GRP doesn't deviate from any release he's made for several other labels. It's still his chunky, humorous take on New Orleans funk; these are his songs, visions and performances, and there's none of the elevator material or laidback, detached fare that's a customary GRP byproduct. Such songs as "Witchy Red," "Spaceship Relationship" and the title selection are a delicate mix of seemingly outrageous but actually quite sharp commentary and excellent musical performances from Dr. John on keyboards, Hugh McCracken on guitar, and several other veterans, among them the great Red Tyler on tenor sax. While not quite as fiery as his classic sessions for Atlantic, if anyone can bring the funk to a company that's famous for avoiding it, it's Dr. John. ~Ron Wynn

By the early '80s, Dr. John was mostly in demand as a session player and ad jingle writer, but he cut a pair of back-to-back solo piano albums that proved he was still capable of greatness. The first, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack, ranges widely, from joyous tributes ("Memories of Professor Longhair," "Pinetop") and slow blues ("New Island Blues," "Saints") to graceful standards such as "Dance à la Negres" and "Wade in the Water." With the exception of a gentle version of "The Nearness of You" and a peppy take on "Silent Night," this album is all instrumental--a joy if you're a fan of solo piano, though perhaps a bit wearing if you're not. (The 2002 reissue adds four previously unreleased bonus tracks.) --Keith Moerer

Though this album is far more a collector's record than an actual "turntable staple," it is a significant improvement from Davis' first solo outing. During the title track in particular, as well as a cover of Merle Haggard's "White Line Fever," Davis' voice achieves a ragged glory that makes the listener realize why sloppy rock & roll can be so much fun. Other standout moments include a version of the tune that Davis co-wrote with Taj Mahal, "Further on Down the Road," and the Davis-penned "Reno St. Incident." In all, it is the fun record that you would expect from a standout session player like Davis. ~Steve Kurutz
