Shaun Murphy (born May 6, 1948) is an American blues and R&B singer songwriter, best known for her powerhouse singing style. Her recording career started in 1971 with Motown Records.

Murphy shared the stage with many Detroit-based bands, including Wilson Mower Pursuit and Jake Wade and the Soul Searchers, in venues such as Detroit's Grande Ballroom, as well as the first Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 1969, along with various large state fairground music venues. She was soon noticed by an employee of Motown in a touring theater production along with Texas native Meat Loaf. The two were signed by Rare Earth Records, a division of Motown Records, as Stoney and Meatloaf in 1971. That pairing was short-lived and became defunct, although they had previously also been fellow cast members of the Detroit production of Hair. Only Murphy was retained under contract after the breakup of the duo.

After a period of inactivity with the new division of Motown in Los Angeles, she left Motown and contacted Detroit music producer Punch Andrews for possible opportunities. Murphy then relocated back to Detroit in 1973 to work with Bob Seger. She has continued to work with Seger in the studio since 1973, in addition to performing on all of his tours since 1978.

She returned again to live in Los Angeles in 1985 while working with Eric Clapton on his Behind the Sun album. Murphy joined Clapton's band for the ensuing tour, which included Live Aid.

Murphy's career in vocals has been both as band lead singer and session singer. She has sung, toured, and recorded with such acts as the Moody Blues, Bob Seger, Herbie Hancock, Phil Collins, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Maria Muldaur, Bruce Hornsby, Michael Bolton, Coco Montoya, Alice Cooper, Little Feat and rock musicals, Hair and Sgt. Pepper's, etc.

In 1993, she became a full-time member of the Los Angeles-based band Little Feat. She stayed on for the next fifteen years, recording and touring with them until 2009.[1]

In September 2009 the Shaun Murphy Band released the album Livin' The Blues. A second album, The Trouble With Lovin', followed in 2010. Late in 2011, Murphy released a DVD and live album both titled Shaun Murphy Live at Callahan's, recorded at Callahan's Music Hall, Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Her album Ask for the Moon, released in 2012, was nominated for three Grammy Awards and won two Blues Blast music awards. She released Cry Of Love in 2013. Loretta was released in February 2015. Mighty Gates was released in October 2017 on Vision Wall Records.

13. I Never Loved You (3:59)

Since 2009, Shaun Murphy and her band have put out a steady stream of albums, including the recently released Mighty Gates. The common ground on the releases is the mix of Rock, Blues, Country, and Soul coming from the band, all connected by the power in the pipes of Shaun Murphy. In addition to solo outings, Shaun Murphy has been singing on album with fellow Detroit, Michigan-based musician, Bob Seger, since 1973 and been a part of his touring outfit since 1978. Her studio and stage work includes artists such as Eric Clapton, Glenn Frey, Herbie Hancock, Bruce Hornsby, J.J. Cale, and Alice Cooper as well as being a member of Little Feat on both record and stage from 1993 through 2009.
Years of touring give “Gypsy Highway” more meaning as Shaun Murphy swears ‘I ain’t gonna turn around’ on the album track from Mighty Gates. She sings out to the star-filled sky guiding her home on the gospel rock march of “On a Night Like This”, struts out over the crunch of guitars to advise “Be Good to Yourself”, and tries to shake loose a memory on the funky chord chops of “I Never Loved You”. A slow Rock simmer quiets to let Shaun Murphy’s voice rise above the melody, encouraging and inspiring with her words on the title track as she joins a worldwide community together to stop the madness of our times. Mighty Gates sashays out on “That Kind of Time” as it looks for a little loose love while it lets the Blues take over for “I Don’t Need Nobody”, pokes at “Walk in the Shadows” with sharp-edged guitar licks, and straps itself to a Rock’n’Roll boogie beat with “Slightly Free”. Shaun Murphy is a powerhouse as she makes it look as easy, stepping up to the microphone and opening her mouth to greet “Blues in the Morning” as she shimmies on self-awareness with “Out of My Own Way” and puts the pedal to the floor as she rips up the dance floor in “Down The Honky Tonk”.

11. Fool For You (3:59)

I found my way to the Blues stage at the first Ann Arbor Blues Fest, and was completely smitten. Getting to play at such an important milestone festival had my head spinning. That was my awakening to the Blues, and I couldn’t have been among a better line-up: Son House, Muddy Waters, BB King, Freddy King, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and the list went on and on.
Solidified into the Detroit music scene, I found my calling, but it was to be a bit illusive, while I continued my music education over the years, I was also free to pursue another of my loves, acting, where I was able to snag two different life changing musical plays: Hair and Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band On The Road, appearing in both of the Broadway productions. Having been in Hair afforded me the opportunity to land a recording contract with Motown Records, along with Meatloaf, to record the our duo album Stoney And Meatloaf.
Right after the recording of the record, Stoney and Meatloaf, Motown moved out to Los Angeles taking me with them. After a short stay in LA, I got back in touch with Seger’s manager, Punch Andrews, and it just so happened, Bob was, again, looking for a singer. So I headed back to the music scene I was so familiar with, Detroit. Starting with the recording of Katmandu, under the pseudonym, Stoney. I was in Detroit and, again, working with Bob and his band; The Borneo Band, along with some of the Silver Bullet boys, Chris Campbell, Alto Reed, and Drew Abbott, and throw in a couple of Tulsa boys: Jamie Oldaker and Dick Sims, along with my pal Marcy Levy.
When Bob Seger decided to take some time off the road, I was contacted again by my old friend, Marcy Levy, (of Leon Russell and Eric Clapton fame) that Eric Clapton was doing a record with Phil Collins producing, and would I be interested in coming to Montserrat to record the backing vocals on his ‘Behind The Sun’ album. The experience was thrilling; to get back to my roots, and with the ‘guitar god’ himself. I, of course, said yes! We recorded this great record, and after the second song, Eric asked me if I’d like to do the tour, it was too good to be true!
Back on the road with Seger, with hardly a couple of weeks off from Clapton, with his 86 tour, I met up with Bill Payne and Fred Tackett, two of the members of the legendary band Little Feat. As tours go, making friends comes easy and when the tour was over, Bill Payne asked me to sing some things on their new re-grouped band’s CD, Let It Roll, Representing The Mambo, and Shake Me Up as a backing vocalist.
I went on to tour with Seger to the present, with some other tours along the way, with such notables as Bruce Hornsby, Joe Walsh, Glenn Frey and The Moody Blues, with Television appearances with John Hiatt and Herbie Hancock, etc..
I found myself back in Feat camp, and they asked me to join as a full member in 93’, and for the next nearly 16 years, it was my home. Till recently parting with my long time cohorts, I then realized, I’d come full circle back to where I started, in the world of the Blues, wanting to take my place along side some of my favorite idols; Koko Taylor, Etta James, Big Mama Thornton, and Big Maybelle, paying special homage to Miss Taylor and Miss James on my first solo CD, Livin’ The Blues.
I’ve had the honor of including some of my friends from the road on my following CD’s: Bekka Bramlett, (Fleetwood Mac) Mike Finnigan, (Taj Mahal, & Bonnie Raitt) Johnny Neel, (Allman Bros.) Jim Horn, (George Harrison, Elvis, etc.) Kenny Greenberg, (Kenny Chesney) Danny Pelfrey, (Aretha, Diana Ross, etc.) and Laura Creamer, Barbara Payton, as well as the Motor City Horns (Bob Seger).
Now coming off my sweep of the 2013: of the Bluesblast Music Awards; Best Female Blues Artist Of The Year, and Best Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year for my release of Ask For The Moon, as well as 3 Grammy nominations, honors I’m so thrilled to receive.
My next CD: Cry For Love, features some of my favorite songs I’ve been wanting to do for a long, long time, and I won Blues411’s Jimi Award for that…..
Last year brought in the CD: Loretta, and I’m so proud to have I penned 7 of the songs, writing with some great friends. I had the pleasure of having some wonderful guitar players on this one: Jack Pearson, (Allman Bros., Greg Allman) Jimi Fiano, (Foghat, Bad Company) and Rob McNelley (Delbert McClinton and Bob Seger) It has reached #1 on Cashbox magazine in two genre’s!!
Now I'm releasing my 7th CD, It Won't Stop Raining, a collection of groove blues that'll get your feet tappin, and some will find some that tug at your heart..... I'm so proud to say that all tunes were recorded with my touring band, an amazing bunch of talented musicians That I'm loving working with!

I forgot to include album front. Please, click on post picture and save it in album folder.
