Born 1938, Rolling Fork, Mississippi, USA. Dyer took up the harmonica when he was seven and as a teenager sat in with Smokey Wilson in a local club. He moved to Los Angeles in January 1958 and formed his own band, the Blue Notes, backing visitors such as J.B. Hutto, Jimmy Reed and Jimmy Rogers. He later formed a duo with George Smith, at that time still working as Little Walter Jnr. He recorded a couple of singles for Shakey Jake’s Good Time label before cutting an album, Johnny Dyer And The LA Dukes, for Murray Brothers in 1983.

From the liner notes by Mark Hummel: "On this album, Johnny Dyer and I put together a list of Muddy Water's faves. Mountain Top wanted to put out a CD with Johnny singing Muddy's parts, and me blowing Little Walter and James Cotton parts behind him with an authentic sound. We brought in my band, The Blues Survivors, Rusty Zinn on guitar, Bob Welsh on piano and guitar (Charlie Musselwhite Band), as well as two former Muddy sidemen, Paul Oscher (harp and slide guitar, from 1967-1971), and Francis Clay (drums from 1957-1966), who played on many of the original Muddy sides on Chess Records. Check out the amazing Steve Wolf on electric Fender bass getting a stand-up bass sound. If you close your eyes, you'd think you're in Chess Records' Studios in 1957."

Bob Corritore has worn a lot of hats. First off, he's a world-class blues harmonica player and blues scholar. He runs his own small record label. He books blues musicians for Phoenix, AZ's finest blues club, the Rhythm Room, and for the purposes of this wonderful little CD collection, he also hosts a blues show called Those Lowdown Blues on Sunday nights from Phoenix's KJZZ 91.5 FM, often bringing in the very touring artists he books for the club to play studio sets on his show, which is where these 16 tracks came from. Each one is an informal, intimate gem, and performances here like Louisiana Red's version of "Goin' Train Blues," Lazy Lester's harmonica rendition of Hank Williams' "Jambalaya," and Lowell Fulson's stately take on "Worried Life Blues" all have a casual urgency about them. "For A Little Bit of Money, You Get A Whole Lot of Blues" is one of the lines off of Track 2, "Whole Lotta Blues", of Barry Levenson's "The Late Show", and really when it comes to this album, those words couldn't be more true, for a couple of reasons. First off, "The Late Show", clocks in at over 70 minutes, yes I said 70 minutes, which in my book is twice as long as fair number of releases out there and secondly "The Late Show" features an amazing amount of different styles of Blues, which is sure to please a wide variety of Blues fans.

Barry Levenson hails out of Pittsburgh and started his love affair with the Blues at the young age of 14, after being introduced to the music of Buddy Guy via an older friend. From then on Barry Levenson began building an amazing musical resume, with first playing in hometown blues bands, to working as a studio musician, and then moving to Boston to where he studied "arranging at the Berklee School of Music". While in Boston he also was the house guitarist at the Sugar Shack, one of Boston's more popular Rhythm and Blues clubs. When a warmer climate beckoned, Barry Levenson made the move toSouthern California where he began working with many blues greats, such as, "Big Mama Thornton, Pee Wee Crayton, Percy Mayfield, Lowell Fulson and J.D. Nicholson". It was not long after, that Barry landed his first recording deal with Kent Records with his own group, the Automatics. By that time Barry was also the House Producer at Kent Records.

"The Late Show" consists of 15 amazing Tracks of which Barry Levenson wrote all of them, as well as, did the producing and arranging. Of the 15 Tracks, 10 are amazingly done instrumentals, which had no problem reminding me of other fantastic instrumentally forward musicians, such as Chris Dair and the great Ronnie Earl. The instrumentals also have a very good length to them, which really allows you to get caught up and swept away with them.

Barry Levenson is not credited with vocals on this album, but for the 5 Tracks which are not instrumentals, he managed to have 3 amazing vocalists which consisted of Mary Williams "Whole Lotta Blues", Finis Tasby "Slippin' Down Blues", and Johnny Dyer "One For Muddy", "Wrong Side Of The Blues", and "Drinkin' Stops Me Thinkin'", do an absolutely great job on those 5 superbly written songs. Johnny Dyer also doubled as Harpist on "One For Muddy" and "Wrong Side Of The Blues, for which he also did an amazing job. Larry "Big House" David also played fantastic Harp on the instrumental "West Side Rain". Other wonderful performers on "The Late Show" included Blake Watson (Bass), Dave Kida (Drums), Hank Van Sickle (Bass on "Green Is Blue"), Mike Thompson (Keyboards), Phil Krawzuk and Chris Jennings (Horns) and Mike Sandberg (Percussion). With that amazing lineup of talent, "The Late Show" didn't have a chance at being anything other then a wonderful and inspired journey down Blues Lane. ~John Vemilyea

Veteran blues guitarist Barry Levenson wrote all 11 selections for Hard Times Won, which co-stars Johnny Dyer on vocals and harmonica. The music ranges from lowdown Chicago blues to swinging jazz/blues with Mike Thompson's organ giving a soul-jazz feel to some of the instrumentals. Levenson's lyrics are intelligent, there is a surprising amount of variety on the songs even though they do stick to blues, and the musicianship is excellent. Levenson and Dyer in particular make for a great team, and the results are often exciting and are always quite spirited. The veteran Johnny Dyer is a likable singer and an intense harmonica player in the best tradition of Chicago blues, while co-leader Rick Holmstrom is a versatile guitarist who is able to play 1950s jump blues and the later, more rocking variety with equal facility and spirit; his instrumental feature "Tacos De Pescado" is a highlight. What began as a reunion album for Johnny Dyer and the L.A. Jukes became that and much more. In addition to having three original members of the formidable band of the late 70’s and early 80’s, this session also introduces fresh, new talent. Two of the featured musicians, who traveled from Norway to join this project, are some of the most exciting blues artists to emerge in decades. It took this international effort to recapture the soul of 40’s and 50’s post-war blues pioneers such as Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Little Walter, Baby Face Leroy, Sunnyland Slim, John Brim, Robert Nighthawk and Floyd Jones.

Small tube amps, vintage equipment and low tech arrangements help give these recordings the magical nuance that has vanished from so many contemporary blues tracks. Various - Mark Hummel's Blues Harmonica Blowouts (2-Disc Set)

Blues Harmonica Blowouts are live events that Mark Hummel has been staging in various California venues for the last fifteen years, inviting the cream of America's blues harp blasters to come out and play with his band, The Blues Survivors. For this great double CD though, one or two special guitar players joined in too...Rusty Zinn appears with William Clarke and Billy Boy Arnold, Junior Watson clangs along on the James Harman and Paul DeLay tracks, Steve Fruend plays with Lazy Lester and, of course, Anson Funderburgh is the axe-man on Sam Myers contributions. Plus drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith also lends a hand on the Lazy Lester and Carey Bell songs.

In this double live selection of spectacular sucking and blowing, several performances stand out. James Harman pulls out every trick in the book on "Extra Napkins", easily demonstrating why Hummel's description of him as "showman extraordinaire" is spot-on. He has to be on top form to stop guitarist Junior Watson stealing the spotlight with his peppering fills and power chords. The late great William Clarke just scorches across the stage with his electrifying harp work on "Stretch My Money" and he just pours out the misery on the late-nite slow burner "Lonesome Bedroom Blues".

Rick Estrin sets the endurance record for breath control on his six and a half minute solo "Getting' Out Of Town". He gives this old Sonny Boy piece humour, flair and funkiness and probably needed to lie down in a dark room when he'd finished this marathon. The late Paul DeLay cools things down with his masterful playing on the long slow blues "Can't Stand Your Evil Ways", Lazy Lester re-creates his vintage Louisiana style on "Sugar Coated Love" and Sam Myers just howls on "Sweet Home Chicago" with some of the dirtiest harmonica on the CD. This track rocks likes crazy thanks to Anson Funderburgh's guitar work and the boppin' piano of piano player Bob Welsh.

Hummel had a damn good idea when created these Harmonica Blowout concerts. This 2 CD set will positively thrill any blues harmonica fan and, as the notes say, "here's your chance to get up close and personal with twelve of the greatest blues artists ever to draw breath through a harmonica".
