- - - - - - - - - - - - CHRISTMAS BREAK - - - - - - - - - - - -

Well folks, it's time for us to have ourselves a little Christmas break. Like most people, we too need some time off to celebrate the holidays together with family and friends. This means that from December 22 until January 8 there will be no new posts, and we will NOT attend to re-up requests. We ask you kindly not to ask for any re-ups during that period of time, since we don't want to be swamped with work once we are back. Thanks in advance for being understanding. The Basement will of course still be available for those of you who want to help each other out with certain requests.

We would like to express our best wishes for Christmas to all you visitors, old and new, who have stayed with us and supported us throughout 2025 and we hope you will continue coming here also in the year to come. This place wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't for you guys. From all of us to all of you: MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Although he is most famous for his innovations in soul and funk music, James Brown never lost sight of his blues and R&B roots. His albums often placed surprisingly rootsy covers of old chestnuts alongside his groundbreaking polyrhythmic workouts. This double CD compiles 30 of the bluesiest items from his vast recorded legacy. Cut between 1957 and 1985, most of the tracks actually date from the '60s; many of these, in turn, were laid down in the early part of the decade, when J.B. was gradually evolving from his more conventional beginnings. The artists whose songs are covered here read like a who's who of R&B pioneers: Louis Jordan, Roy Brown, Memphis Slim, Ivory Joe Hunter, Fats Domino, Chuck Willis, Little Willie John, Billy Ward, Guitar Slim, and Bobby Bland. It's quite an instructive insight into Brown's not-always-visible roots.

It would be fair to say that this does not rank among his most exciting material, finding him in a smoother and more conventional style than his most innovative work. It is nonetheless always entertaining and accomplished, with Brown's love for this material shining through strongly in his committed interpretations. Especially intriguing are an 11-minute cover of Chuck Willis' "Don't Deceive Me" and a two-part, blues-based rap vamp from the early '70s, "Like It Is, Like It Was (The Blues)." The disc includes several unreleased cuts, alternate takes, and unedited versions of previously released songs. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

Tony O' - Ooh Wow

Tony O' got his musical start as a teenager in Queens when he met blues songstress and actress Victoria Spivey in the early '70s. The popular vaudeville star had established her own label, Spivey Records, in 1962. Tony O' recorded with her and was introduced to many of the big names in blues music. "She used to bring in blues legends from Chicago and all over; I met Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf and learned from them." Why a white kid in the '70s would pick up a guitar and start playing blues licks instead of rock 'n roll is a mystery that even Tony doesn't understand. "Yeah, blues is a unique way to go coming out of Queens during that era. I don't know why it happened, I just started meeting all these legends and playing Chicago-style blues guitar".

A turning point came when he was 16 years old and volunteered to help T-Bone Walker and his band move in their equipment for a concert at Max's Kansas City in downtown New York. "After that he put me right in the front row and I thought that was incredible". At Spivey's recording studio he met Howlin' Wolf and Hubert Sumlin, who gave the youngster his stage name. For decades, Tony O' has toured with many of the greats, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Recording on the way. He moved from New York to St. Augustine in 2002, six months after 9-11, and he said. St. Augustine has a "good mix of culture, maybe that's what makes it good for blues."

The musician has just released "Ooh Wow", a collection of originals and blues standards with blues pianist Pinetop Perkins. Tony O' shouldn't have much of a problem getting a record company to pick up his new CD, but the 50-year-old blues guitarist and singer who has shared the stage and recording studios with legendary performers such as Howlin' Wolf, Jimmie Rogers and The Legendary Blues Band doesn't feel like waiting around for a label to catch up with him. With a five-year-old son and a tight touring schedule, he's got little time to deal with remixing, negotiating and other such foolishness. "I've recorded on 6 or 7 different labels, so I know it's time-consuming and I don't have time for all that but I won't rule it out if a record company offers a good deal", he said. So the CD he recorded over the last year in New York with veteran blues pianist Pinetop Perkins will be distributed to radio stations and sold at his shows.

b. Reuvain Zev ben Yehoshua Ha Levi, 29 May 1951, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Levy played clarinet during his childhood and, inspired by a Ray Charles concert, started playing piano at the age of 13. He soon took up organ too, and, influenced by Billy Preston and Jimmy Smith, was a quick learner. Two years later he was backing up blues artists performing in the Boston area. At 17 the young musician was discovered and hired by blues legend Albert King. Still in high school, Levy worked with King, who had become his legal guardian, for 18 months. From December 1969 to February 1976 he played piano and organ in B.B. King’s band.

The period from that time until 1980 saw him work with the Rhythm Rockers, led by Johnny Nicholas and featuring the young Ronnie Earl on lead guitar. As the house band of the Speakeasy in Cambridge they honed their skills backing up great blues musicians, among them Walter Horton, Johnny Shines and Roosevelt Sykes. After working with Luther ‘Guitar Junior’ Johnson for three years, Levy played with Roomful Of Blues from 1983-87. In addition to recording with his own band, Ron Levy’s Wild Kingdom, he has played on numerous recordings by other artists, and since 1985, has produced a steady stream of albums for labels such as Black Top and Bullseye Blues. He became an in-house producer for the latter. /Biography by AllMusic

After a decade of silence, The BluesKings are back in full force. Although the band was on hiatus, the idea of reuniting with Herbie and Jan-Joris never went away. Now, with the fresh energy of newcomers Harm van Essen and Fred Bonthuis, the spark has been rekindled. All the songs on Say Hi are original, written by Herbie with co-writers Harm and Jan-Joris, and performed in that unmistakable BluesKings style. Recorded live, with only a few overdubs to keep the raw edge intact.

The BluesKings draw their inspiration from life on the road and perform a lot of their own material. Guitarist Harm van Essen (of La Ratte, among others) provides that unmistakable old-school vibe. Drummer Fred Bonthuis has been playing rock 'n' roll since the '70s. Jan-Joris Sportel on bass lays down a wonderfully relaxed groove. Herbie provides vocals and harmonica, with a generous dose of creativity and spontaneity. /Blues Magazine

Here comes an album with real old time Chicago blues by singer, guitar and harmonica player Tony O, that will delight all blues fans. Once again Tony gives us fourteen songs in a recording where he wants to pay tribute to legendary harmonica player and great friend James Cotton, with whom he shared countless tours with and even travelled to Japan to play some unforgettable shows besides recording together during the 80’s and 90’s with the legendary Hubert Sumlin.

Tony O now lives in New York, but for many years he played in Chicago. He was member of The Legendary Blues Band, a group that brought together some of the musicians who played with Muddy Waters before he passed away and, although the band did not last long, they released some albums that still are deeply appreciated by good fans. He was also member of Little Mike and The Tornadoes, and he has shared stage with many of Chicago’s blues greats.

All the experience gathered during his long years of career can be found in this new release, that presents fourteen songs, four of them Tony O’s own compositions and the rest are good versions of little-known songs coming from great Chicago bluesmen like Muddy Waters, Eddie Arnold, Brook Benton, Luther Johnson, Earl Hooker and Little Walter among others that get a new life in Tony O’s hands which allow that these songs are not forgotten, and also becoming a fantastic journey through the most genuine Chicago blues.

Tony O is backed by an excellent group of musicians who mastery know all the secrets of “windy city” blues, which contribute to make this album a real treasure for all Chicago blues lovers. /La Hora Del Blues

The Recliner Rockers history begins in 2005 when Al and Geoff were playing together in a covers band and started talking about their love of rockabilly, blues and other roots music.

Putting on a colourful, energetic show just came naturally with Al's seriously dynamic guitar playing and Geoff's crazy spinning double bass acrobatics. Along with Julian's flamboyant drumming and Bruce's smooth sax style, their flare for showmanship truly matches their musical prowess.

His authentic but refined style encapsulates the essence of American rock, from Duane Allman and Dickey Betts to Billy Gibbons and Johnny Winter.

At the head of the successful YouTube channel Tone Factory, Nico lives his adventure on stage all year round with his band which tours all over Europe. Nico is one of the few guitarists I've seen in the studio who is able to put solos in one take with such intensity, even in a live session with a legend like Robben Ford. This is the mark of the greats.

London-born guitarist and vocalist Nick Woodland, one of the veterans coming out of the British blues-rock scene, was inspired by those like Alexis Korner, Eric Clapton, John Mayall and Peter Green. Woodland started out on guitar at age 15 and was nearly one of the original Rolling Stones in the sixties. Since those days, he stuck to the message of rhythm'n'blues gaining some fame among insiders as one of the hottest live-acts around. The South-German newspaper, one of Germany's biggest dailies, wrote: "Nick Woodland is among the best live performers of the white blues."

Based in Munich (Germany) where he now resides, Nick Woodland has played his guitar for a whole lot of different bands in rock (Amon Dueuel II, The Clash), pop (Donna Summer, Boney M) and jazz (Herbie Mann) and recorded five albums with Germany's top act Marius Mueller-Westernhagen. With his own band he has been touring Europe extensively for many years, working the field between blues, rock'n'roll and country music. The band's live potential is well documented on their CD "Live Fireworks" that gives further proof of Nick Woodland's being a "helluva guitar player."

Since Two Timers formed their unique two-piece band in 1993 they have surprised many thousands across Europe with the sheer power of their performance. Their formidable reputation and unclassifiable style has earned them guest spots with artists as diverse as the Corrs, John Mayall, Taj Mahal, Maceo Parker, Joe Satriani and the Stranglers as well as billing on major European festivals. Now back in the U.K. they are turning heads here fast.

Take two multi-instrumentalists with attitude, the mesmerising Sarah James and the taciturn Gordon Russell; throw in an electrified suitcase, a strap-on snare, some raw harmonica and feisty vocals; steamroller the lot with some rock-solid rhythm guitar and what have you got - one helluva show for a start. And then there's the songs: soak up thirty years-worth of Leadbelly, Alex Harvey, Tom Waits, T. Rex, Steve Earle, Zeppelin (I could go on), mix it with a strong dose of your own psyche and you have something which owes them all a lot but sounds nothing like any of them. It's an original and highly visual performance that deserves a slot on any billing.

So if you appreciate dynamic performers with a strong sense of identity, get along to see Two Timers' show and you'll know exactly where they're coming from.

The band has regularly toured European countries. Led by singer/guitarist Omar Dykes, they are best known for the 1987 album Hard Times in the Land of Plenty which sold over half a million copies and whose title song was a top 20 hit in America.

Omar Kent Dykes grew up in McComb, Mississippi, began playing the guitar at age 12 and started his first band at 13. In his 20s, he gathered a group of musicians who started calling themselves 'The Howlers'. They specialized in frat parties and were a party band, playing music that included both R&B, rock & roll and even the occasional polka and western swing tune. Dykes has said he remembers these days fondly. It was around this time that he started calling himself Omar and developed his penchant for the blues.

In 1976, the Howlers relocated to Austin, Texas, at the time sporting a bustling music scene, home to such up-and-coming artists as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Johnson. After a year of gigging in Austin, the rest of the band quit, feeling that they were not cut out to play music full-time. As they headed back to Mississippi, Dykes stayed and kept the name. He worked out a new lineup, and recorded the debut album Big Leg Beat for Amazing Records in 1980, just after fellow Austin band The Fabulous Thunderbirds. The record was a local hit and was followed by I Told You So.

It was not until 1987, however, when Dykes signed a recording contract with Columbia, that the band would succeed. That year saw the release of Hard Times in the Land of Plenty, that went on to sell over 500,000 copies. The band now consisted of Dykes singing and playing guitar, Bruce Jones on bass, and Wes Starr on drums. Dykes and this rhythm section have been playing together off and on for over 30 years.

Since then, Omar And The Howlers has released around twenty-five albums on Amazing, Austin, Columbia, Antone's, Bullseye Blues, Watermelon, Black Top, Blind Pig, Provogue, Ruf Records, and their current record label, Big Guitar Music. /Wikipedia

GA-20 - Orphans

Album: Orphans
Size: 50,9 MB
Time: 21:58
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2025
Styles: Blues/R&B
Art: Front

1. Cryin' & Pleadin' (2:54)
2. I Love You, I Need You (2:02)
3. I Don't Mind (2:39)
4. Stranger Blues (3:30)
5. Hold On, I'm Coming (2:58)
6. My Baby Is Sweeter (3:06)
7. Just One More Time (2:46)
8. Chicken Pickin' (1:58)

Sometimes short and sweet is the perfect combination for a musical interlude. The new album, Orphans, by GA-20, is joyful and upbeat, offering covers of eight classics. At just over 20 minutes, it narrowly exceeds the accepted definition of EP. Just returning from a European tour, the Boston-based GA-20 is a trio comprised of Matthew Stubbs on guitar and baritone guitar, Cody Nilsen providing vocals and guitar and Josh Kiggans on drums. The band bio boasts: “The dynamic throwback trio have long been disciples of the place where traditional blues, country and rock ‘n’ roll intersect,” and that is an accurate description of the album.

Joining forces in 2018, each member brings some seasoned experience to the stage. Stubbs is the former guitarist for Charlie Musselwhite and James Cotton. Singer/songwriter Nilsen brings along a country background and extensive session work. Kiggans has worked with The Outliers, Sarah Borges and others. Together they have declared, “We strive to bring traditional blues to the front lines of the modern roots music scene.”

Orphans opens with a nice update of Billy Boy Arnold’s Cryin’ & Pleadin’, featuring the same upbeat feel but with a new signature arrangement. The vocals are slightly more forceful and up-front, while the guitar work remains clean and crisp. These two traits permeate the entire album. Melodious, clear vocals recall the vocal groups of the 50s and early 60s. Their bio explains that the band “draws inspiration from their old-school sounds from the music they love from artists such as Otis Rush, J.B. Lenoir, Howlin’ Wolf, Junior Wells, Hound Dog Taylor, Earl Hooker, Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson and so many others.” Throw a little Jimmy Reed into that mix and this album is covered.

The second track is a cover of Lazy Lester’s 1959 love song, “I Love You, I Need You.” Here, Nilsen achieves a poignant vocal performance. Shifting gears, the band slides into James Brown’s 1961 song, “I Don’t Mind”, this time bringing more soulful vocals to the fore. The 1962 Elmore James tune, “Stranger Blues,” provides the perfect place for some famed James-influenced slide guitar work and boasts a catchy ostinato. The Isaac Hayes and David Porter-penned, Sam and Dave-performed classic, “Hold On, I’m Coming,” is covered next. The trio performs it as an instrumental, transformed through some unique lap-steel guitar work by Nilsen, with guests Brooks Milgate adding organ and Nate Edgar on bass.

Little Walter’s 1959 “My Baby Is Sweeter” becomes a bluesy shuffle with infectious back beat and nice guitar work, invoking a mysterious, noir feeling. “Just One More Time” is a rocking remake of a 1956 Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm song. This time, it features a solid, succinct guitar solo. The closer is an energetic cover of Lonnie Mack’s “Chicken Pickin.”

A band to watch, they have three #1 Billboard Blues chart-toppers, four-time Boston Music Awards for Best Blues Act, and have received multiple other wins and awards nominations. The accompanying release proclaimed that GA-20’s “exuberant yet straightforward style, economical guitar, and buoyant vocals propel a sense of celebration and community in musical form.” And these, too, are fair and accurate claims. /Bob Liddycoat, Blues Rock Review

"Many a bluesman paid backbreaking dues chopping cotton in the flat Delta fields of Mississippi and Arkansas. There was no cotton crop to tend to in the grimy rust belt town of Youngstown, Ohio in the 1960's, but there was grinding, dirty work for some, as human grist in the mills of U.S. and Republic Steels. It was this dismal blue-collar legacy that Nick Vigarino was born to.

Vigarino had his way out of this existence before he even knew it. Nick fell into possession of a battered guitar, feebly equipped with one string. As fate would have it, he learned to play the guitar in the exact same way as a hundred seminal blues musicians had two generations before him, on a homemade one-string diddley bo. With a poet's fierce commitment to birthing his own music, he continued to play on ever-improving instruments the angry and mournful melodies in his head, carrying his music into the bars and roadhouses of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

Back In Blue: A Blues Tribute to AC/DC is more than a gathering of the tribes, more than just a summit meeting of Australia’s leading blues artists. It is a project conceived by Queensland musician, Darren Griffis, as a shot in the arm for depression-busting organisation, Beyond Blue. Each artist has taken a track of the AC/DC album Back In Black and reinterpreted it in their own image. It’s a smart idea, and one that comes off as brilliantly as one would expect.

It is significant that producer Darren Griffis chose Back In Black to hang the Back In Blue project on, as the original album was AC/DC’s declaration of mourning for recently deceased singer and icon Bon Scott. Yet it was also a statement of spirit and strength, a rallying cry to carry on in the face of tragedy. Let’s hope Back In Blue reaches out to those those who need its spirit the most.

Jill Newman grew up in Vancouver, started playing guitar in her teens and once played in an all-female Led Zeppelin tribute band. Now based in the Pacific North West, Jill and her band play around Seattle and up into Canada, the recent release show for this CD being in Vancouver. This is Jill’s third album and it includes nine originals and one cover.

The musicians are, one assumes, Jill’s regular band: Scott Smith on guitar, Patrick McDanel on bass, Kelly Van Camp on drums and harmonica. In addition Annie Jantzer adds backing vocals to five tracks, Peggy Lee cello to one track and keys are added to seven by Joe Doria or Chris Gestrin. Jill herself handles lead vocals and lead, rhythm and slide guitar, even giving a credit to her dog Lucy who lay by her side as she composed the songs.

Jill’s vocals are clear throughout and she avoids any of the histrionics to which some singers resort, making this a pleasant listen. There are some blues influences here but the music is probably more in the Americana field. /John Mitchell, Blues Blast Magazine

5. Brightest in the Dark (5:11)

In 1968, Nick Marechal was just another kid in the San Fernando Valley learning to play guitar. Elvis was a hero making a come back. Garage bands were in every neighborhood. FM radio ruled. That period provided inspiration for writing the song “Son of the Blues.” In the early 1970s Nick received lessons from the late great Ted Greene. Nick’s picking style, knowledge of chords, and an appreciation for the American songbook came from Greene. Right after high school Nick played in bar bands. While attending community college he became interested in mathematics and engineering, as well as music. Nick eventually earned a PhD in mathematics from UCLA in 1986. In 1988, Nick became a member of the technical staff at The Aerospace Corporation and retired in 2013 at the rank of distinguished engineer. During that period he authored both journal and conference papers in the fields of imaging radar and lasers. Nick's logo is based on a soundwave which forms his initials "NM".

In the 1990s he performed in a three piece blues rock band Power Spectrum. Later, Nick began recording with the help of session players Mike Finnigan (Hammond B3), Leland Sklar (bass) and John Robinson (drums), and later John Ferraro (drums). “It would be an all star band, if I wasn't in it,” Nick likes to say. In the last few years, Nick was introduced to Grammy®-winning engineer and producer Niko Bolas by a good friend Fred Walecki of West LA Music fame. Niko brought Nick to Capitol Recording Studios and sent Nick to voice builder Gary Catona. That was a lucky break for a guy from the Valley who knows a few theorems and how to bend strings.

In 2024, Nick continues honing his skills and recording at both The Village in West LA, and East West in Hollywood with a team of legendary professionals; Quinn Johnson on keyboards, Travis Carlton on bass, John Ferraro on drums, Greg Mathieson on B3, and he has recently featured a horn section (arranged by Quinn Johnson) on a couple of the forthcoming tracks.

Now Appearing at Ole Miss is a live album by B.B. King, recorded in 1979 and released as a double album on MCA Records in 1980. The live recordings were augmented with overdubs, most notably with percussion instruments. This has been criticized by reviewers as making the album stale, and it is widely regarded as B.B. King's weakest 'live' album. One notable feature, is that the album contains the first use (on a blues recording) of the bass style of playing known as "slap" by Russell Jackson, who would go on to play in the posthumous "B.B. King Experience Band" with another B.B. King band veteran James "Boogaloo" Bolden. /Wikipedia

Chicken Shack had come to prominence in the late 1960s as one of Britain’s finest blues bands, recording a series of albums for the Blue Horizon label. By 1971, the band had undergone changes to their line-up and guitarist/vocalist Stan Webb took the band in a harder rock direction. Signing to Decca’s Deram label in 1971 under a production deal, Webb’s band, now a trio featuring John Glascock (bass) and Paul Hancox (drums), recorded the fine album ‘Imagination Lady’, featuring such classic tracks as ‘Crying Won’t Help You Now’, ‘Daughter Of The Hillside’ and the epic ‘Telling Your Fortune’.

John Glascock departed the band in 1972 and was replaced by Bob Daisley on bass. This line-up would record another excellent album, ‘Unlucky Boy’, which was released in early 1973 and featured a guest appearance by Chris Mercer on saxophones. Again, this line-up would prove to be short lived, with Stan Webb forming an entirely new line-up of the band in 1973 to head out on the road.

The band’s final album for Deram was the live set, ‘Goodbye Chicken Shack’, recorded at Brunel University on the 26th October 1973 with Webb joined by Dave Wilkinson (electric piano), Rob Hull (bass) and Alan Powell (drums). Soon after this recording, Webb disbanded Chicken Shack to join Savoy Brown. The album was belatedly released in Europe in 1974 and was a fine testament to the excellence of Chicken Shack as a live band. This box set gathers together all of the albums and singles issued between 1971 and 1974 and is a splendid tribute to a fine band.

Chris Mulkey grew up in the midwest with a guitar in hand, Chuck Berry, Elvis, and the Supremes in his head. He spent a night trading jokes with Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters called him son at Nick's Blue Note Lounge, he has sat in with Los Lobos, and still has Janis Jopin's kiss on his lips. He takes these experiences along with inspiration from Buddy Guy and Louisiana jump, to make music about the American experience that's fun to move to.

Upon reading the title Bare Knuckles & Brawn, from Canada’s Blue Moon Marquee, one might expect a CD full of hard-driving numbers that prove Saturday night’s all right for fighting. Imagine this reviewer’s surprise on finding eleven original songs that bring back the big-band sound of the 1940s, complete with horns, ragtime beats, and lead vocals reminiscent of Louis Armstrong’s. The lyrics also hearken to earlier days, expanding upon song names such as “High Noon,” “The Red Devil Himself,” and “52nd Street Strut.” Those who prefer their blues on the raunchier, meatier side won’t find much to chomp on, but those who like it smooth and hot will simply adore this album. It’s also great fuel for inspiration in quiet moments, meant to silence mental chatter and let one’s thoughts flow.

“This album, to me, represents a combination and evolution of our last records,” says front man A.W. Cardinal. “I believe it features some of our best recorded work, and we were able to do it with some of the best possible musicians.” Bassist and vocalist Jasmine Colette adds, “We recorded [it] in three days. I like all the grit and pulp with my music, so the warm sound of the tape made it come together. All the songs were written…in the last year of our travels, in relation to the air of the times, characters we meet, cities we walk in and the weather we feel.” Blue Moon Marquee currently makes their home in an island shack on the coast of the Salish Sea in British Columbia. Joining Cardinal and Colette are guest musicians Darcy Phillips on piano and Hammond B3; Jerry Cook on tenor sax, baritone sax, and clarinet; Jimmy “Hollywood” Badger on drums; Jack Garton on trumpet; and Paul Pigat on guitar for “The Red Devil Himself.”

“Big Black Mamba” starts things off, a unique meditation on the snare of fossil fuels: “I asked for water; she brought me gasoline. That’s the meanest gal I’ve ever seen. Big Black Mamba, you got me moaning low, dirty mis-treater from the stars of Texaco.” Up-tempo love ballads “Smoke Rings for my Rider” and “Fever Flickering Flame” follow, guaranteed to make even the dead rise from the grave and dance. Cardinal’s guitar is cardinal on both, a prime example of his instrument of choice conversing with listeners via musical notes. “Hard Times Hit Parade” slows things down, the perfect background music for a film noir scene. Dig Darcy Phillips on his Hammond and the melancholy horn solo, echoing in one’s ears like a night breeze.

“As I Lay Dying” contains the album’s title in a pithy piece of lyrics: “The world was built [with] bare knuckles and brawn.” A.W.’s vocals are at their Armstrong-iest here. Earworm “High Noon,” according to the band, “is a reference to Black Elk, a holy man of the Oglala Lakota people and the perseverance of Native peoples.” The next two tracks will make guitar lovers swoon, especially “Big Smoke” for traditionalists. “52nd Street Strut” is a rat-a-tat tribute to Billie Holliday, featuring Jasmine Colette’s velvety voice. “Wayward” and “Lost and Wild” close things out, with the final song wistfully bringing “What a Wonderful World” to mind. Blue Moon Marquee has demonstrated that their name should be in lights once more with the classic sound and big-band bravado of Bare Knuckles and Brawn! /Rainey Wetnight, Blues Blast Magazine

Five paths, one single emotion: the living blues. Coming from very different musical backgrounds, the Five Bluesmen blend their experiences into a vibrant and original blues sound. With Blues Factory, their third album, the group affirms its identity: authentic, generous, and profoundly human. Ray Perelli, singer and rhythm guitarist, is the driving force behind the band. Ray discovered B.B. King at age 13 and was never the same after that: the blues became his language.

After years of playing various styles (notably with the Dixie Cats), he founded Five Bluesmen in 2010. Alongside him, Elvis, the lead guitarist, joined the adventure from the very beginning after an impromptu concert - no rehearsal, just instinct and passion. Jérôme Frulin, the Parisian bassist from the cult band Sales Majestés. Eric Flayecasse, the Belgian drummer, infuses the rhythm section with his unique energy. As a regular guest Élie Coquard, a well-known professional harmonica player in France and Belgium, breathes his soul into their music.

Personnel: Ray Perelli (vocals, rhythm guitar); Elvis Chambrey (lead guitar); Jerome Frulin (bass, lap steel guitar); Eric Flayecasse (drums). Guests: Stephane Verdura (piano, Hammond organ); Elie Coquard (harmonica).

From a shotgun shack in the cotton fields of Louisiana to the main stages of international blues festivals - Lil’ Jimmy Reed has come a long way. Now, one of the last surviving legends of classic Louisiana down-home blues is back with a powerful new album - Caress Me Baby. With his stinging guitar work, gritty vocals, and haunting harmonica, Lil’ Jimmy Reed carries the legacy of real blues. His story is legendary: born Leon Atkins in 1938 in Hardwood, LA, raised near a blues nightclub where Slim Harpo and Lightnin’ Slim played, and handed a career-defining opportunity when he filled in for Jimmy Reed himself. The crowd loved him - and the rest is blues history.

This album features classics made famous by Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, and Joe Turner, alongside stunning original compositions by Lil’ Jimmy himself. Expect deep grooves, storytelling lyrics, and that unmistakable Southern blues sound. Lil’ Jimmy Reed has been nominated for a Grammy, awarded Blues Harmonica Player of the Year by the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame, received the Living Legend Award from the Baton Rouge Blues Society, and been inducted into the Alabama Blues Hall of Fame. His performances earn standing ovations worldwide - and now, you’ll hear that magic in this new release.

The 24th Street Wailers - Where Evil Grows

Album: Where Evil Grows

13. Can't Fight It (2:14)

Had a really rough day? Want to just relax, reboot, and get happy? If so, then the new 24th Street Wailers album, Where Evil Grows, is just the ticket. The album is the much anticipated follow-up to last year’s well received Wicked, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Sometimes, when music is described as “vintage” so-and-so, there is a connotation of being staid, perhaps even stale. The 24th Street Wailers aren’t having any of that. Their animated offerings are always a good time, full of spunk and passion. This outing features 10 tracks written by drummer and vocalist Lindsay Beaver, plus three covers. Like their previous album, Where Evil Grows is produced and engineered by Billy Horton at his Fort Horton Studios in Wyldwood, Texas. As with all their albums, the mix and sound are excellent. The band is made up of Canadian and American members including new guitarist, St. Louis native Elliot Sowell, who fills the vacancy left by Emily Burgess’ departure last year.

Beaver’s vocals, a delightfully robust cross between Brenda Lee and Etta James, are wonderfully strong, nuanced, and convincing. The band is tight, and they continue to draw us in with their joy and enthusiasm. Standout tracks on Where Evil Grows include the rocker “Cursed,” and “Just Wait,” which features sweet tenor sax soloing by Jon Wong. Pianist Jessie Whiteley, and Wong, both lay down fine solo work on “All I Think of Is You,” and a simply killer version of “I Found A Love” definitely takes one back in time. Mike Archer’s bass work is spot on throughout, and the band really gels as a unit.

If you enjoy your “vintage,” or if you prefer, “retro” jump blues, with some kick instead of a lame imitation, this album is for you. /Barry Kerzner, American Blues Scene

Personnel: Lindsay Beaver (vocals, drums, percussion); Elliot Sowell (guitar); Michael Archer (bass, backing vocals); Jesse Whiteley (piano, backing vocals); Jon Wong (tenor saxophone); Billy Horton (vibraphone).
