11. Cost Of Livin' (4:10)
12. Sonic Boom (3:13)

Known for his dazzling stage show, which is highlighted by all manner of leaps, somersaults, and other assorted guitar-playing gymnastics, Guitar Shorty on disc is generally a poor substitute, but he still radiates tremendous energy on this set from Alligator Records. His guitar playing is rich, deep, and heavy as plutonium on these tracks; his vocals are strong and soulful, and there's little doubt that after nearly 50 years in the blues business Shorty is still going strong. Working with a hard blues-rock combo that features Jake Andrews on rhythm guitar, Wyzard on bass, John Thomas on keyboards, and Alvino Bennett on drums, Shorty roars through these cuts like a train at full steam, and he sounds confident and assured, a Texas blues man completely on top of his game. Highlights include a blistering "Runaway Train," the metaphor-drenched "Fine Cadillac," and two powerful and topical Guitar Shorty originals, "We the People" and "Cost of Livin'," both of which address the economic duress that still creates poverty in the U.S. in the 21st century. In all, We the People is nicely balanced between hard rocking party numbers, straight out blues pieces, and strong political statement, making it a timeless and completely current blues record. ~Steve Leggett

12. In The Morning (4:13)
13. The Netherlands (6:13)

In his sixth decade of playing the blues, Guitar Shorty returns with the duly claimed I Go Wild. These 13 cuts cover gritty soul/blues the way Shorty would play 'em on any given Saturday night in any number of blues joints around the world. Shorty has not mellowed with age. One of the strong points of I Go Wild is Shorty's ability to translate the exhilaration and acrobatics (literally) of his live show into the studio. The showmanship of Shorty's mentor, Guitar Slim, and student, Jimi Hendrix, is evident. Needless to say, the 13 cuts provide matching passion and rambunctiousness. Jim Pugh's Hammond B-3 organ adds an extra dimension to the proceedings. ~Al Campbell

Legendary guitarist/vocalist Guitar Shorty is a giant in the blues world. Credited with influencing both Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy, Guitar Shorty has been electrifying audiences for five decades with his supercharged live shows and his incendiary recordings.

Like a bare knuckled boxer, Shorty strikes with his blistering, physical guitar playing and his fierce vocals, connecting directly with body and soul. What really sets Shorty apart is his absolutely unpredictable, off-the-wall guitar playing. He reaches for sounds, riffs and licks that other blues players wouldn't even think of. Amazon.com says his guitar work "sounds like a caged tiger before feeding time. His molten guitar pours his psychedelicized solos like lava over anything in his path." The Chicago Reader declares, "Guitar Shorty is a battle-scarred hard-ass. He slices off his phrases and notes with homicidal fury. He is among the highest-energy blues entertainers on the scene."

Through the years, Shorty has performed with blues and R&B luminaries like Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, B.B. King, Guitar Slim and T-Bone Walker. He started playing with these legends while still in his teens and recorded a handful of singles for a variety of labels and an obscure LP during the first 30 years of his career. After decades of paying his dues (like so many unheralded American bluesmen), it took a tour of England to establish Shorty's fame in his home country. His recordings since then all received massive critical acclaim, and his renowned live performances have kept him constantly in demand all over the world. His 2004 Alligator Records debut, Watch Your Back, became his best-received, best-selling album to date. His 2006 follow-up, We The People, won the coveted Blues Music Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year.

This new record is produced by Jerry Williams Jr., aka Swamp Dogg, who was recently featured in Rolling Stone for his Bon Iver helmed album "Love, Loss, and Auto-Tune" that featured Guitar Shorty. Kindred spirit Larry "MoogStar" Clemon, from the legendary funk group Cameo was brought into the mix and a holy alliance was formed. Featuring 16 original tunes penned by Shorty, Swamp Dogg, and MoogStar. The resulting sound is like no other Guitar Shorty album up to this point.

9. The Porkchop Song (2:46)
10. I'm Going Back To Houston (4:16)
11. Hard Time Woman (4:14)
12. Hey Joe (7:03)

William Kearney aka Guitar Shorty keeps it lean, mean and direct on this outing. Recorded in New Orleans, this session features his regular road band, abetted by Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff and some top N.O. players like Buckwheat Zydeco bassist Lee Allen Zeno. Shorty penned seven of the 12 tunes aboard, and the mix on this album runs from Texas shuffles ("Sugar Wugar," "I'm Going Back to Houston"), low down blues ("I Wonder Who's Sleeping in My Bed," "You're a Troublemaker," "Me and You Last Night") to New Orleans rock & roll ("I Want to Report a Crime," "Hard Time Woman," "The Porkchop Song" and the title track) and funk ("Don't Mess with My Woman," "Let's Get Close"), plus a heartfelt tribute to Hendrix on an extended workout on "Hey Joe." A wide and varied session that showcases the guitarist's wide-ranging chops and skills. /Cub Koda, AllMusic

10. Old Time Sake (4:16)

More impressive than Shorty's British venture thanks to superior production values and a better handle on his past (there's a stellar remake of "Hard Life"), Topsy Turvy made it clear that Guitar Shorty was back to stay stateside. Black Top assembled a fine New Orleans combo for the majority of the album, as Shorty proved that his act translates beautifully to record minus the crowd-pleasing acrobatic antics. /Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Guitar Shorty - Get Wise To Yourself

9. A Fool Who Wants To Stay (4:10)
10. The Blues Done Got Me (5:33)
11. Ways Of Man (3:35)
12. Smells Good (6:43)

This gem of a disc shows Guitar Shorty (David Kearney) off on one of the highlights of his too-limited recorded efforts. He is one of the most flamboyant guitar players you will ever have the chance to see. His stage act was inspired by Guitar Slim, and he in turn inspired and influenced his stepbrother-in-law, a fellow by the name of Jimi Hendrix. This disc is filled with his searing blues guitar work. The only exception is the bouncy Mark "Kaz" Kasanoff tune "A Fool Who Wants to Stay," though Kasanoff is an associate producer of this disc (maybe that says enough).

The rest will give you more than your fill of Shorty's inflammatory and slashing style of guitar licks, the very tight horn section arranged by Kasanoff augmenting him, and the solid musicians who are in the band that backs him. The best way to experience Shorty is live, but this is one of his best recorded efforts with fine production and a good clean sound that shows his abilities off in the best light. But if you get a chance, don't miss his show. Although he is now moving up in years, he still makes sure you get a good show, because he is a showman as well as being one hell of a guitar player. /Bob Gottlieb, AllMusic

Guitar Shorty & The Otis Grand Blues Band - My Way Or The Highway

Until he joined forces with British guitarist Otis Grand's band and waxed this very credible comeback set, David "Guitar Shorty" Kearney's legacy was largely limited to a solitary single for Cobra and a handful of great but legendarily obscure followups for Los Angeles-based Pull Records during the late '50s. The acrobatic guitarist informed everyone he was alive and lively with this one, exhibiting his Guitar Slim roots on "Down Thru the Years" and slashing with a vengeance on "No Educated Woman" and the title cut (but shouldn't it have read "or the highway?"). /Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Guitar Shorty (John Henry Fortescue) - Alone In His Field

John Henry Fortescue was born in Bellhaven, N.C. on January 23, 1923. In 1952 he recorded two sides for the Savoy label under the name of "Hootin' Owl" that were unissued at the time. One of them "I Love That Woman" later appeared on a Flyright CD compilation from 1992.("East Coast Jukebox") He was recorded by David McLean for Flyright in the early 1970's for his first LP "Carolina Slide Guitar".
Fortescue was known to have an ongoing battle with the bottle, and was also known to wax a lot of tall tales about his life. He claimed that he had recorded at least fifty sides in New York City, was Elvis Presley's guitar instructor, (McLean admitted that he could perform some "dead on" Elvis impersonations), and he also claimed that he had performed with The Beatles. In reality, Fortescue acutally divided his life working in the fields around his home, working as an apprentice for a house-builder, drinking and playing blues on the street, and playing gospel music in church with his wife Sara singing. The owner of Trix Records Pete Lowry and McLean recorded this album by him in 1973, a somewhat uneven mix of gospel and bawdy blues numbers, some stretching to six to eight minutes in length. Lowry commented "Well, I think we got enough out of him for one more album". There were other recordings by him that appeared by him on two Flyright LP compilations, some of them recorded live on stage. Fortescue passed away in Rocky Mount, N.C. on May 26, 1976, probably never overcoming his own personal demons in life.

Cars had become one of the centers of American life by the 1920s and plenty of blues musicians we’re singing about them. It’s interesting that Blind Lemon Jefferson sang in several songs about driving cars, something he could never do as a blind man. In 1931, Memphis Minnie sang about her house burning down, but the only thing she’s worried about is losing her car. Robert Johnson sang some of the most poetic lyrics sexualizing the car as a woman. Modern day bluesmen have continued singing about cars as these titles show.

JSP Records was founded on the basic idea of recording blues artists that had fresh ideas, not ones who were simply rehashing their hits from the 1950s and 1960s. John Stedman was interested in hearing new songs and comments on today, not memoirs of long ago pasts. Because of this, JSP has recorded some of the true visionaires of the blues world and also some of its most flamboyant characters. Cats like Champion Jack Dupree, Lefty Dizz, Carey Bell, Guitar Shorty and Louisiana Red all found their way into the JSP recording studios. (Excerpt from the liner notes.)

Despite what legend and lore may tell you, the blues did not originate in the Delta. It grew out of the African American experience in the early 20th Century, wherever musically inventive people faced oppression and adversity. And that was happening in plenty of places besides northwest Mississippi. The blues was a product of its times, and so developed in parallel in many areas of the southern U.S. Each region produced its own dialect of the blues, though the Mississippi Delta and the Piedmont of the Southeast were certainly major centers. But of all the regions where blues flourished, Texas—being practically its own country in terms of culture, population, and size, and being home to hotspots such as Austin, Houston, and Dallas—had a profound impact on blues. The Lone Star state still remains a major influence on modern music styles, including and especially the blues.

The West Coast blues is a type of blues music characterized by jazz and jump blues influences, strong piano-dominated sounds and jazzy guitar solos, which originated from Texas blues players relocated to California in the 1940s. West Coast blues also features smooth, honey-toned vocals, frequently crossing into urban blues territory.

The towering figure of West Coast blues may be guitarist T-Bone Walker, famous for the song "Call It Stormy Monday (But Tuesday Is Just As Bad)", a relocated Texan who had made his first recordings in the late 1920s. During the early 1940s Walker moved to Los Angeles, where he recorded many enduring sides for Capitol, Black & White, and Imperial. Walker was a crucial figure in the electrification and urbanization of the blues, probably doing more to popularize the use of electric guitar in the form than anyone else. Much of his material had a distinct jazzy jump blues feel, an influence that would characterize much of the most influential blues to emerge from California in the 1940s and 1950s.

Various - The Alligator Records Playlists: Money (2-Disc Set)

Everyone needs it -- and, increasingly, everyone around the world seems to be suffering from lack of it. The paradox of money is a subject well-represented in popular music, with rock getting so much of its fuel from blues and R&B. Enjoy these tunes about money from Alligator Records, the need for it, the things we do to get it, and, sadly, its highly volatile nature.
