Darrell Nulisch was born in Dallas, TX, in 1952. He grew up on soul singers like Otis Redding and Al Green, inspiring him to take up a similar path and work on his voice. He was a founding member of Anson Funderburgh's Rockets and sang with that group in the '80s, when he also did time in groups like Ronnie Earl's Broadcasters. He eventually left Texas and started a solo career in 1991, relocating to Boston and releasing albums that showcased his incredible blues-harmonica skills and his passionate voice. Even legendary soul singer James Cotton asked Nulisch to work with his touring band when he lost his voice, giving Nulisch a chance to work with someone he admired. He continued his solo efforts into the next century, releasing the critically acclaimed I Like It That Way in the spring of 2000.

New Orleans may be full of eccentrics but James Booker was one of the more eccentric of them! If Professor Longhair's vocals could seem a little wayward, Booker's are completely off the beaten track, always in tune but only because it followed his piano playing, which pursued a similarly untrammelled path. He had enjoyed a big hit in 1960 with his organ instrumental 'Gonzo' and had gone on to play with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Maria Muldaur and Ringo Starr.

A year or so before this concert, Island had released a mid-price solo piano album in Britain, which had certainly raised his profile - even if it did puzzle many critics with its mix of quasi classical playing (Blues Minuet) and barrelhouse Blues (Junko Partner), with Booker's well-documented heroin addiction adding a very personal touch to the latter. Both these titles are included on this set recorded at the Lake Side Hotel in the much-missed Belle Vue complex in Manchester. There is also the near Jelly Roll Morton-styled 'Pixie', some rock 'n' roll, heavily adapted covers of '50s R&B numbers, such as 'Black Night' and 'Let Them Talk' , and a wonderful 'Tipitana' - and don't forget that back then Professor Longhair was definitely an esoteric taste !

All solo, except for the last two numbers of the album, on which local outfit - now much better known too - The Norman Beaker Band, with Victor Brox on electric piano, help out, though the vocals are rather low in the mix. This tape may have languished for thirty years but it is certainly good to hear it now. With so little of Booker's material readily available, this is essential for Crescent City lovers. ~Norman Darwen

This album 'moves out' from start to finish. There is no need to discuss each cut; suffice it to say that each is an exciting representation of the rough and raw sound that this group features. The musicians are all veteran Chicago bluesmen: Sunnyland Slim, piano and organ; Dave Myers and Junior Pettis on bass... JB. Hutto is truly one of the greatest exponents of the slide electric guitar I have ever heard, and certainly has learned much from the old master Muddy Waters. Hutto's singing is also first rate, with his 'rough' voice, which is perfect for the blues. Hawk Squat is one of the finest urban blues albums to come out in a long time. Christian Rannenberg is THE German Bluespianist par excellence: Chris Rannenberg. And not unjustly, he has a reputation for being both a brilliant soloist and one of the most sensitive accompanists of Europe.

In 1976, he was co-founder of the "Blues Company".

A year later he switched to the blues band "The Third Ear" as a freelance musician. Numerous performances and tours followed. E.g. as an accompaniment for American blues stars like Billy Boy Arnold, J. B. Hutto and Eddie Clearwater.

But the tours through Europe were not enough for Chris Rannenberg and so he decided to perfect his skills in the USA. It moved him 1982 to Chicago. Within a short time he played there in the bands of John Littlejohn, Lefty Dizz, Sam Lay and Jimmy Rogers.

In the same year he founded the "International Blues Duo" with tenor saxophonist Gary Wiggins. This formation toured Europe a short time later, both in the duo and together with John Heartsman, Thorsten Zwingenberger, Angela Brown, Guitar Crusher, Big Jay McNeely, and Charlie Musselwhite.

In the 90s, Chris Rannenberg moved to Oakland, where he was with blues artists such as Cool Papa and Buddy Ace.

Back in Germany, another duo production with Big Jay McNeely took place, which won the prize of the German record critics. A short time later the CD of the "First Class Blues Band" founded by him also received this award.

Chris Rannenberg can count on old blues legends such as Blind John Davis, James Booker, Willie Mabon, Henry Gray and Sunnyland Slim.

The whole gamut of the Blues spectrum is represented – from the traditional sounding ‘Uncle Walter’ by Husky Tones; to the Rock end of the genre, courtesy of Ali Clinton’s ‘The Lie 24-96’. There is the dulcet voice of Zoe Schwarz on ‘Beatitudes’; contrasting with the gravelly vocals of T Belly’s ‘Respectable Man’. We have the R’n’B of Rev. Ferriday’s ‘Red Painted Lips’; compared to the Country influenced vibe of Mat Walklate’s ‘So Long’. Several artists, such as The Della Grants; and The Blue Horizon, have a song on both volumes. And there is a lot more besides: Dave is keen to especially point out ‘Layla’ by FutureBlues: ‘…it is a strange bed-fellow with the other tracks…’ he told me ‘… but with a new twist on the modern side. I felt it deserved a place on the album’.

But being a big fan of female vocal, I was especially pleased to see that tracks by several ladies that I have been very impressed with lately have been included; ie: Ruby Tiger’s ‘Best Friend’; Tanya Piche’s ‘Blues Child Woman’; and Angela Lewis Brown’s ‘Ice Cold Tears’. Ruby and Angela were my recommendations; but Tanya was already known to Dave. In spite of the fact that there is lot of female vocal on these two albums (I’m glad to say); there is also some talk of a separate Women In Blues album too; so that sounds promising as well.

I’m recommending both volumes to long-term Blues fans; as well as those who are interested to find out what the UK Blues scene is all about. These albums are good samples of the genre as a whole. ~Phil the Music Quill

"Deep Water" is the first recording collaboration between two long-time friends who first worked together during their college years in their popular local rock band, Skydog. T. Nicks and Ken Eichler share many common musical roots and while their music is fresh and original, you can still hear influences of the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Allmans, and many more classic artists throughout the cuts.

All of the guitar parts are played by T. Nicks and Ken Eichler, lead vocal duties are shared by T. Nicks, Blues Brother Tommy McDonnell, Stephanie Harrison and Greg Mayo. Vito Luizzi provides the driving rhythms on twelve of the thirteen tunes with Vinnie Conigliaro (filling in for a touring Vito) on "Dreams Of Terez". Paul Connors, keyboardist extraordinaire, provides a perfect counterbalance to the guitars and Larry Forrest lays down the bass in "Hold On" and "Workin' For The Union Wage" Deep Water songs.

Formed back in 2004, the swedish duo Hurley & The Blue Dots consists of Fredrich Rönnholm on lead vocals, drums, harmonica and Mathias Blixt on guitar, harmonica and backing vocals. Their main inspiration comes from the blues and early rock 'n' roll of the late 40's and early 50's. It is raw and unpolished renditions of songs from Bo Diddley, Lazy Lester and Muddy Waters among othersas well as their own compositions.They have released three cd's so far. On the album cover, on a black band, the title calls me to lean back and let myself go to the groove. Okay, let's go!

With the title "Let Yourself in Groove", the briquette is cut into the showcase. The melodious melodies do not get a bloody funky basis with refined tempo and tone changes. After the good rhythmic guitar tunes, a familiar, extremely hot female voice comes in. Of course this is Tóth Vera! Oh, but I like it! "Let the groove move your tired body! Do not hesitate, "he sings (of course in English ...). I do not have a hard time because the music is great, thanks to the bass and drum section created by András Szkladányi and Attila Móré.

While listening to the disc, the different influences, moods and styles are exciting. The well-structured material is deeply permeated by blues, soul and gospel, all with tight bases, highly accentuated. Except for two exceptions, each song is Gábor's song. These two exceptions are "Is not No Sunshine" by Bill Withers and "Key to the Highway" by Charlie Segar-Big Bill Broonzy. And I have to say that besides these "evergreens" Gábor's songs do not disappear at all!

That this is not a jazz album? No problem! It's full of feeling and the jazz roots are credited. Otherwise, the "Girl Chain" (the only instrumental piece) is pure jazz. Gábor wrote the song for her daughter, who is a ballet dancer. Alternating strokes and vibrating pulsations show the lightness and severity of dancing at the same time. Its structure is exciting, with unison, and perhaps the highlight of a nicely built bass guitar. There is some Pat Metheny effect in the sound, though much cheaper.

Gábor's songs have something to say! (This is a growing treasure in today's "celeb" world.) A good example of this is the "Family and Friends" written after a car accident. It is about how family and friends are important in troubled times: "Frustrating, difficult times can come, but you can find shelter for your family and friends." (Now I'm beginning to understand why I was asked to write a record criticism.) These things to me They also mean a lot!) Light soul music with a strong blues sensation, spiced up with two lines of excellent, tasteful guitar solo.

I must point out that behind the vocals we hear a guitar-bass guitar (guitar-bass-drum), which is not typical at all. (Blues are still-but, well-known soul and funky papers are usually packed with advanced synthesizer sounds.) Of course, you need a great guitarist. Gábor's pregnant, rhythmic accompaniment is heavily influenced by the opening song in "I Must Hide" and in "I'm Afraid" recorded at two different times. Of these, the latter is carrying the palm, its rhythm crazying, Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon" like the guitars. And of course I still have to praise the drum (Attila Móré) and bass (András Szkladányi)!

Gábor enjoys the album with few but better guitar tunes. In addition to the "family" song, the blues, such as "Empty Livingroom", "Gimme a Smile", but most probably in Key to the Highway. In these guitar vocals he does not aim at modernity, rather he strikes the blues-inspired, sensual, tasty, "hot" sound. Naturally, the "ancestors" can be recognized in their play, including James Blood Ulmer, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and George Benson. The effect of the latter is especially in the Unisons of the "I Must Hide" vocal-guitar. The guitar body is painted with glittering colored beads. Sumptuous!!! (Translated from Hungarian.)

Though the Chicago blues artist Mighty Joe Young worked mostly as a sideman throughout the 1950s and '60s, he released some fine solo work in the '70s and after. This release captures Young performing live in Chicago in 1972 with his crack South Side Band, which includes a bassist, drummer, pianist, and horn section. Young plays Chicago blues in the classic mold augmented with soul flavor. His searing licks and solid vocals are front and center throughout, but it's the collective power of the band that lends this recording its punch.

This is Chris Daniels & The Kings 15 album, and our second with Freddi Gowdy. As we’ve toured blues festivals over the US and Europe I’ve noticed that the old tradition of horns is disappearing. At a blues & brews in Greeley I met one young blues-fan who’d been standing and staring at us. He came up after our set and asked me why I called our music ‘funky blues’ – a name festivals and European fans use to describe our music. He was a traditionalist and thought blues was 12-bars, guitar and maybe harp, but not sax, trumpet and horns. I gave him my email and suggested he listen to Bobby Blue Bland, Johnny Taylor, Albert King, Walter Wolf Man Washington, Gatemouth Brown and a host of incredible artists who’s use of horns is as essential to their music as a guitar is to Sonny Landreth. I also suggested he check the life and history of W.C. Handy. He wrote me back about a month later and said, “I had no idea. I got into blues because of Gary Clark Jr. and the then discovered Stevie Ray Vaughn and then Eric Clapton and Robert Cray and I never knew about this horn thing. Thanks for taking the time to talk to me. My favorite right now is Johnny Guitar Watson. Have you heard his old stuff from the 50s and 60s?” I had to laugh. And I thought, I wonder how many other blues fans don’t know about the New Orleans, Memphis horn tradition in blues that goes back 100 + years. That’s the seed that started this album. The reason that this is called “Volume I” is simple. We only scratched the surface of all the incredible blues with horns. More to come!

Blues comes from countless inspirations, lust, lost love, oppression, health, booze, self-destruction – you name it. And by playing it, singing it and dancing to it –blues liberates – even if only for a moment. There are a lot of very simple lyrics in blues that say a great deal more than the basic text. But there are also really great (and funny) lyrics in blues. T Rex, Bobby Blue Bland, Walter Wolfman Washington all bring that sense of empowerment to their lyrics. What’s important is not that you lay your head on some lonesome railroad track. What’s important is that you ‘snatch their damn head back.’ I grew up listening to Koerner, Ray and Glover and like their songs these lyrics were really fun to sing. South Carolina native Pam Taylor is locked and loaded and ready to steal hearts with her authentic, heavy-hitting American roots rock sound. After starting the Pam Taylor Band in 2011, Taylor hit the top of the Roots Music and Blues music charts with her debut album, Hot Mess, in 2012 and sold out music halls as a country/blues duo in 2015. Now in 2017, Taylor has overcome health issues and a broken heart, and has redefined herself again as a solo artist with a healing message. She has documented her journey in her upcoming third album, Steal Your Heart, set to release on September 22, 2017.

Growing up in Lancaster, South Carolina, Taylor has seen the highs and lows as a musician and in her personal life. Having formed the Pam Taylor Band, she released her first album in late 2012, Hot Mess, to much critical acclaim. Her debut release hit #1 on Roots Music Report, #3 on Sirius XM BB Kings Bluesville, and #25 on the Living Blues Charts. However, the band broke up before their major tour. She ended up taking guitar lessons from legendary blueswoman, Debbie Davies, and songs poured out of her. After meeting southern rock/country artist, Robert Johnson, who became her life partner at the time, they formed the duo called Stolen Hearts. Together, they released the album, Dirty Southern Soul in late 2015, and they sold-out their CD release show at the Evening Muse in Charlotte.

Taylor garnered numerous accolades over the past several years. She won the Queen City Music Award for Best Female Rock Artist three years in a row (2013-15), and won the 2012 Charlotte Music Awards for “"Best Female Rock Band" and "Best Blues Band." She also won the 2014 Carolina Music Awards for Best Female Rock Artist. Taylor was also voted Creative Loafing Magazine Readers’ pick for "Best Local Songwriter" and was the cover feature artist for a special Women in Blues Edition of Blues E News Magazine in April 2013. Taylor has also opened for or shared the stage with the likes of Cowboy Mouth, Shooter Jennings, John Primer, Los Lobos, Debbie Davies, and Kofi Burbridge (Of Tedeschi Trucks Band), to name a few.

It was In July 2013 where Taylor hit a health roadblock. She suffered from a ruptured disc in her neck, which left her with a paralyzed left arm and in severe pain. After taking a holistic approach with acupuncture, she was pain-free after a few sessions. Her songwriting then transitioned to more about healing and peace. She eventually split from Johnson in early 2017 and went back on her own as solo artist ready to release her new solo album this fall.

Today, Taylor has found herself stronger and more confident in herself and her music than ever. Jan Marius Franzen of Blues Magazine calls Taylor “the 'Rising Star'...from the small town in South Carolina [who] is breaking boundaries in several respects. A must have!” Her upcoming album, Steal Your Heart, has the message that loving oneself is the basis for true healing and happiness.

Veteran guitarist/singer Mike McDonald has been delighting audiences for over four decades.
A consummate performer, Mike has shared stages around the world with an “endless” list of musical icons from B.B. King, Three Dog Night, James Cotton, and Steppenwolf to spending a week in Kandahar playing for the troops - one of his proudest moments.
He’s also a very talented audio engineer/producer, who ran Toronto’s venerable Grossman’s Tavern Sunday Night Jam for 13 years using his music smarts to mentor hundreds of musicians at Toronto’s legendary “Home of the Blues” including Canadian mega talents like Jeff Healey, Allanah Myles, Micheal Pickett and Tony Springer. Mike’s also produced albums “Grossman’s Live 1” and “Grossman’s Live 2” featuring Jeff Healey and Pat Rush (Johnny Winters, Muddy Waters, Dr. John).
In the spirit of Grossman’s live music jams, he currently hosts Kitchener’s bi-weekly showcase Mike’s Monster Jam featuring the who’s who of music in Waterloo Region and beyond.
He’s also very adept at paying homage to the playlists of other bands and has been playing the role of John Fogerty in CCR Tribute Band, “Bayou Boys” for years and was the founding member of Green River.
In 2012, he added Keith Richards to his guitar slinger’s repertoire in Rolling Stones songbook band The Beggar’s Banquet.

This is Robert Kimbrough, Sr.'s follow-up to his 2016’s Willey Woot CD. Robert has his usual suspects in rare form on this cotton patch blues release including David Kimbrough, Kenny Kimbrough, Duwayne Burnside & Jim Hall.

Robert Kimbrough Sr. continues the CottonPatch Blues style created by his father, the legendary Junior Kimbrough. From an early age, Robert was steeped in the sounds and life of the Mississippi Hill Country and its distinctive styles of blues. Growing up, Robert listened 1st-hand to Mississippi blues royalty that played with his father at home in the evenings, at Junior’s juke joint club at night, as well as to the all-too-frequent weekend house party and porch jam sessions. The blues was simply part of everyday life as a Kimbrough. Robert continues his father’s tradition, along with some of his 36 siblings on his father’s side. You can often nd many of them sharing the stage on any given night in Mississippi. The Kimbrough name, along with the Burnside name, is part of a blues dynasty that remains strong today, bringing their unique blues style to the world.The Cotton Patch Blues style that Robert Kimbrough, Sr. continues was best summarized by the pioneer rockabilly performer Charlie Feathers as something between bluegrass andDelta blues. Feathers goes on to describe thatthe Cotton Patch Blues possess an unusual blues structure that is both inventive and free, and that the close interplay between the bass, drums and guitar rhythms creates an unusual texture. Robert de nes Cotton Patch Blues as a deep soul sound that can be linked back to the sounds coming from the cotton elds – eld hands singing out as they worked in the rows of cotton.Robert Kimbrough, Sr.’s musical journey started at an early age and took him to Aurora, Illinois to live and play for a few years, then back to Holly Springs, MS to play with his dad and focus on his music, as well as to a tour playing with Junior Kimbrough in 1996 for Fat Possum records, before ending up in prison for 6 1/2 years where he wrote all the tracks for his 1st release, Willey Woot. Once out of prison, Robert became a new man and devoted all of his focus on sharing his unique sound under his new moniker – Blues Connection – as one of the hardest working guys in the blues business.

Born as Emmit Ellis, Jr. on Novermber 10 n1940 in Homer, Louisiana, Bobby Rush has become a blues legend with a signature sound he calls "Folk Funk". While initially a Chicago blues singer he eventually broke through with his funkified, soul/blues with risqué subject matter. In 1971 he scored a #34 R & B hit with "Chicken Heads" and soon followed that up with regional hits on Jewel Records like "It's Alright", "Bow-Legged Woman, Knock Kneed Man" & "She's A Good'un". Bobby began crafting a unique style that incorporated blues, funk and folk. From Jewel, he went to Warner Brothers then to Philadelphia International Records. By 1982, Rush had signed with LaJam Records out of Jackson, Mississippi, where he released five albums, one of which was the phenomenally successful hit Sue, and became a major attraction in the South. But it was in 1995 that Bobby found a home at Malaco's Waldoxy label. At Waldoxy, he released One Monkey Don't Stop No Show which was nominated for two W. C. Handy Awards. The Living Blues Critics' Poll named him the year's Best Live Performer in 1995. In 1996 and 1997, he captured the Real Blues Magazine Award as The Best Soul/R & B Live Performer. After leaving Waldoxy 2003 was a pivotal year for Rush as he was prominently featured in Richard Pearce's documentary film "The Road To Memphis," broadcast on PBS as part of Martin Scorsese's film series "The Blues" and also saw the launch of his Deep Rush record label. He's released three excellent albums to date on the label. His live shows are a riot with his vaudevillian instincts, horny showmanship, and knack for writing tunes that brim with playful down-home wit.

The blues comes in many shades and modes, and is ingrained into the character of those who follow its calling. South Florida may not come readily to mind when one thinks of the blues, but singer/guitarist Bonefish Johnny (John Stacey) has been playing his brand of sugarcane soul in the regions bars and juke-joints for over thirty years. Sings the Blues is a personal statement, a testament to those who came before, and a confession of paying dues.

This production covers a range of blues in various guises, each with a singular story to tell. The stinging style of Albert Collins is brought back to life on his "Ego Trip," featuring the guitar work of Billy Vazquez, and the enthralling bass of Kilmo Doome. Then it's on to the Joe Tex grabber "I Want To Do (Everything For You), a terrific duet with guitarist David Shelley doubling on vocals. Shelley passed recently so this is a heartfelt homage to an old friend. Little Walter is honored on "Last Night," a perfect rendition with obligatory harmonica by Cadillac Chuck.

One does not go a lifetime in the trenches without coming up with some great originals, and there are some gems presented here. "Issues," is a funky fat back number, with the signature scratchy rhythm guitar that is the Bonefish trademark laying the foundation for crisp leads from Albert Castiglia. The jump boogie piano of Bob Taylor, sets aflame "Millions, Billions, Trillions," a dance floor burner with comical lyrics about the crooks on Wall Street. Taylor switches over to a vintage mod organ sound on the retro "Break Every Mirror," for that flashback groove. There are also some obscurities aroused from the vaults as "Soul Shake," starring vocalist Nicole Yarling, reviving the Ike and Tina period of prime rhythm and blues. Known for clever rearranging, Bonefish converts the Rose Royce hit "I Wanna Get Next To You," into a grinding ballad, with detailed guitar licks courtesy of Raiford Starke. "Band Doll," is dragged from the swamps and cleaned up with a drenching horn section spotlighted by sax man Jeff Watkins, for a realistic Crescent City vibe. Special mention here for the spot-on drumming of Jeff Renza, who has been with Bonefish for decades, and also produced the record.

Sticking with his retro roots, Bonefish gives a nod to the man who invented soul, Sam Cooke, by covering "Lost and Looking." This interpretation is a stark plea of a man at the end of his hopes, performed solely with a haunting bass line and tapping cymbal. And so ends the show, but not the story. Bonefish Johnny does not pretend to be the standard bearer of the blues or the great white hope. He is simply a man playing the music that inspired him, obligated to maintain its relevance, in his own time. ~James Nadal

Recorded live at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis with Rockabilly Hall of Famer J.M. Van Eaton (Sun Records / Jerry Lee Lewis ace drummer), Eric Frey (five time Grammy nominated upright bassist) and Matt Ross-Spang (Grammy winning engineer). "Sun Kissed: The Sun Studio Sessions" is creatively nourished by the inspiration of that exciting flux of genres that gave birth to rock n’ roll. Recording sessions occurred during multiple southern tours, during a time that emerged as a profound professional, musical and personal journey, the culmination of a dream come true for April Mae.

Recorded at that legendary studio where the tiles still vibrate with the reverberations of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash just to name a few; Sun Studios in Memphis. Recording completely live, these session stay true to the recording techniques used by Sun Studio's founder and producer Sam Phillips in the early 1950s, utilizing vintage microphones and sonically warm analog tape. Inspiring a CD chock 'fulla lots of revved up Rockabilly n' Roots. Original ditties and heartfelt tributes to some of Mae’s muses, like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Wanda Jackson (dubbed “America’s first female rock and roll singer” who Mae met as the supporting artist for Jackson’s Sellersville Theater show.)
