10. Help Me Flip Another Flop (4:40)
11. Black Coffee (5:56)

Debut recordings from a young guitar ace. He doesn't hail from the West coast, or Boston. Enrico is from ... Padova, Italy. Anyhow, he has been working in the US for the last couple of years, first as a member of the renown Royal Crown Revue, and later as the guitarist in James Harman's Band. His playing is powerful, his tone anything else but clean or thin. With his abilities he might become a threat to established guitarists like Kid Ramos, or Alex Schultz. Good singers, and great band, too.

2010 marked year four of Blues For A Cure and our first event at the historic Lincoln Theatre in downtown Columbus. To celebrate that distinction, we welcomed Blues Music Award winner Duke Robillard and his wonderful band from Rhode Island as our headliners. I first saw Duke perform in Columbus in the early '90s at The Big Bear Rhythm & Food Festival, and he quickly became one of my very favorite guitarists – I’m not the only one.
We kept our International Blues Challenge tradition going by welcoming 2005 IBC/Albert King Award winner Jonn Richardson back from Houston, Texas (Jonn’s third year of BFAC!) and expanded upon the “international” theme with a very special appearance from Italian guitarist Enrico Crivellaro. We also decided to include Central Ohio blues legend guitarist/singer Ray Fuller who has been playing the blues in Columbus for well over 30 years. Duke Robillard was incredibly gracious and generous with his time, agreeing not only to hang out all weekend and join us in this recording session, but also to host a Blues Guitar Master Class at The Jazz Academy the next night.
Of course, Blues For A Cure isn’t all about the guitar, and this year we invited two outstanding harmonica players to participate. Young Chicago bluesman Omar Coleman (thanks to Honey Bee Records) has been a part of BFAC since the very beginning, and he’s not missed one yet. Although, this is the first time his schedule has permitted him to record with us. San Francisco based Phil Berkowitz also joined us with his swinging brand of harp work. Hammond B-3 organ boss Jon Eshelman performed with us for the first time, along with veteran drummers Louis Tsamous and Jan Roll. The bassists on this recording are The Sean Carney Band’s Steve Perakis and my dad, Larry Carney.
Our first two Blues Cures recording sessions took place at Central City Recording Studio in Columbus, but due to relocating the studio, we opted for Tony’s Treasures Recording Studio in Cadiz, Ohio. Mark and Cody have done an incredible job with Tony’s Treasures. The studio proved a relaxed and warm atmosphere, following the snowy drive from Columbus that nearly had us pulling the plug!
We went with a guitar “tag team” approach on most of the tunes, pairing guitarists in some masterful combinations on an incredibly varied set of material that ranges from lowdown to uptown and touches all of the bases between. With an abundance of vocalists on hand, this recording offers even more variation, allowing every one of our singers to take the microphone for at least one song, at times taking on a Johnny Otis style revue feeling that truly offers something for everyone.
I started writing these notes with the intention of highlighting a few inspirational moments, but was left with the conclusion that each and every track is magical in its own way. There were just too many moments to recall. I will, however, say that it was a true bucket list item for me to record with Duke Robillard! We selected an old Big Joe Turner classic, “Cherry Red,” as a tribute to our late, mutual friend Jimmy “T-99” Nelson. I also particularly enjoyed Ray Fuller and Omar Coleman going acoustic on Muddy’s “Whose Gonna Be Your Sweet Man When I’m Gone,” a one take thing of beauty that had all of the musicians in the studio on their feet! I’m sure you’ll have special moments of your own as you enjoy this recording. Make sure you search for us on YouTube and Facebook to find the videos of the recording session, so you can experience the songs as they were tracked.
Blues Cures Studio Jam Vol. 3 is an incredible addition to a recorded legacy that already includes such stalwarts as Jimmy Thackery, Henry Gray, Trampled Under Foot, J.P. Soars, “King Saxe” Gene Walker, Bill Stuve, Steve Gerard, Ricky Nye, Micah Kesselring, The Matt O’Ree Band and some of the players on this volume. The collective passion of these musicians, and all involved in this project to battle a dreaded disease, is what brought us together. That love is apparent in each and every one of these tracks. ~Sean Carney

Electric guitarist Maurizio Pugno is yet another Italian bluesman who, like contemporary peer Enrico Crivellaro, is making inroads on the American and international scenes. Working with singers, harmonica players, and co-songwriters Mark DuFresne or Sugar Ray Norcia, Pugno presents these originals solidly cast in the tradition of urban or traditional uptown blues. Pugno is not as distinctive as the outstanding Crivellaro, but moves in deliberate ways, and uses his very talented vocalists to showcase a broader range of styles. You hear classic shuffle, swing, two instrumentals, South Side Chicago sounds, and even a little Tex-Mex blended in. Norcia is a great singer as heard on his six features with Pugno, and adds his tasteful harmonica to the swing blues "Funny What Happens," the outstanding rocker "Big Party at My House Tonight," and the big-city shuffle title track. Where Sugar Ray's voice is a slight bit deeper, DuFresne has more of an edge in a higher range. Also playing a bit of harp for the southwestern tango "On Down the Trail Again," DuFresne mixes it up more on the soul ballad "Pray for Me" and the bompity-bomp jungle blues "Grey Matters." Pugno's twangy guitar takes center stage sans the singers for the rock swing jam "Tronfy the Weeper" and works with Sugar Ray's harmonica on the shortie "From Norcia to Gubbio." Kill the Coffee is easy enough to enjoy, especially for purist blues lovers who are looking for a new star to champion like Pugno. Having killer bluesmen like DuFresne and Norcia along for the ride on this fine album would never diminish his music on any level. ~Michael G. Nastos

The Blues is a universal language. This is a concept that is commonly understood and widely practiced, yet still seems to escape the grasp of the blues media and fans alike here in the U.S.
The international blues scene is populated with talented and accomplished players the whole world over, but this fact has yet to fully penetrate the market here in the States. It's not a completely foreign idea... think back to the 60's when the British invasion was in full swing. Young artists from the U.K. such as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, the Rolling Stones and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers featuring Eric Clapton were in complete awe of legendary American blues icons such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Slim Harpo, Jimmy Reed, T-Bone Walker and Freddy King. It wasn't until artists abroad had absorbed those sounds and started feeding the music back to the American public at large that we actually began to appreciate what we had in our own backyard.

Today a similar situation has developed. Young musicians in countries as far off as Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France and Italy have studied and assimilated both of yesterday's and today's American blues artistry, extracting the very best that each has to offer. Listen closely and you can hear the influences of Jimmie Vaughan, Duke Robillard, Ronnie Earl, Alex Schultz, Kid Ramos, Kirk "Eli" Fletcher, Junior Watson and Hollywood Fats. Artists that for the most part, now struggle to make a living in an American culture that currently embraces electronically fabricated music, hip hop beats, and manufactured pop stars.

Hopefully now with the release that you currently hold in your hands, all that's about to change. Recorded mainly at the Gubbio Theatre in Italy, this project is the vision of Italian blues guitarist Maurizio Pugno, and features an overwhelming assemblage of talent. Maurizio has long been a part of the Italian blues scene contributing his abilities and expertise to the Rico Blues Combo for the past 10 years with history dating back even further in the Wolves Blues Band prior to that.

For this recording Maurizio collaborated with one of America's premiere blues vocalists, Sugar Ray Norcia, whose musical resume includes work with Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters, Roomful Of Blues, as well as his own celebrated band, the Bluetones. Not merely relegated to sideman duties, Maurizio generously allows room for Sugar to step into the spotlight, contributing all of the albums lyrics and vocals, in addition to supplying his masterful tone and technique on the harmonica. Alberto Marsico, who has previously lent his expertise to Italy's very own blues elite including Egidio "Juke" Ingala and Enrico Crivellaro, is featured throughout on piano and Hammond B3, along with the stellar rhythm support of upright bassist Lucio Villani and drummer Gio Rossi. Members of Maurizio's current band, the Rico Blues Combo featuring Rico Migliarini on harp, Mirco Capecci on electric bass and Giuliano Bei on drums, provide additional support. The final icing on the cake is the full horn section consisting of Davide Dal Pozzolo on tenor sax, Mirco Pugno on trumpet, Giordano Palazzari on trombone, Tiziano Fioriti on tenor sax and Simone Crinelli on baritone sax. With the identifiable American blues talent of Sugar Ray Norcia helping to lead the way, perhaps this release can find a home into the hearts of the American blues audience, educating them about the amazing talent brewing oversees, while in the process also allowing us to learn to appreciate the talent we have living right back here at home. ~Jeff Scott

This is Jason's first release as band leader in seven years. Of course, he's been busy with other projects including being a special guest on the, late great, Johnny Winter's Grammy winning CD. Jason's TV performance on the induction of the great Paul Butterfield Blues Band into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, was quite an honor. Jason is an amazing innovator of the blues harmonica (and beyond) but this CD is about Jason and his great New Orleans band, The Bad Kind. Their new material further showcases the growth of their incredible talents. This new recording is going to smash any preconceived notions of genre boundaries. I don't think they've come up with a name for the music these cats make. We just call it 'Jason Ricci & the Bad Kind'.

Recorded in Memphis TN, produced by Billy Gibson this was my second recording ever. I was living with Junior Kimbrough and got Kenny to play drums on the CD. I was doing some North Ms style tunes a ways before any other white guys were except Kenny Brown and Eric Deaton who went on to back RL Burnside, Junior, T-Model and Paul Wine (Now of Afrosippi) I was doing 'em pretty punk though, The tune "Snow Flakes and Horses" was first recorded here. The Blues world at that time was not too into the Punk-Blues sound and I got some pretty rough reviews for it but now here it appears as chronological evidence! The Tunes on this are fun for sure and great for harp. I was still using a Bullet mic, It sounds great here. Enrico Crivellaro went on to play with James Harman and Etta James. Bobby Little on Drums use to play with Earl Hooker and it shows his drumming is incredibly unique, innovative at times quirky but always swings and supports and strange but effective ways. Bobby was working as an Icecream truck driver at the time, I was sometimes staying on Billy Gibson's couch when not in Holly Springs, Eric was still lying to his parents about college in Oxford so he cold play with RL and Junior, Billy was playing with a 15 or 16 year old Sean Costello and learning Jazz, Enrico Crivellaro was over from Italy visiting us while taking guitar lessons from Ronnie Earl, Akira and Takeshi were friends's of Billy's and were in Memphis from Japan both are monster players I think they were under 21 on this CD. Al was playing with everyone around Memphis at that time. Well Thats what happened...The Songs are fun there are some stand outs on this including me the Moon Cat on Guitar playing a Junior inspired original. It's fun to listen to a more traditional sounding me you can here my first influencences by the great Pat Ramsey. On tunes like No Progression I think you can hear the very first emergence of my style today creeping in. You all should dig this one. I love Ms March, Shakey's Jump, Should Desire... This CD has kick ass musicians all over it.

Enrico Crivellaro - 2 albums: Mosquito Bite (With Raphael Wressnig) / Freewheelin'

In his quest to refine a guitar style that he developed in his teen years, Enrico flew to Connecticut to study with blues masters of the caliber of Ronnie Earl, Duke Robillard, Roy Bookbinder and Kenny Neal at the National Guitar Workshop. Some years later, while a student at the University of California, he embarked on a journey to the very essence of American music thanks to the courses taught by the director of the Jazz Department, guitar legend Kenny Burrell. Learning jazz from one of the men who invented it was a life-changing experience, which could only reinforce his already developed mindset of digging deeper and looking far beyond notes, scales, chords, where music becomes meaningful.

He was always aware that books and lectures do not make a musician. After all, music is akin to an oral tradition, which is passed on from a generation to the next. The road and some sleazy club at 2am is where it's at, where everything comes together, where those notes finally make sense, where the old cats show how it's done. And that's exactly where Enrico could be found most of the time--whether in California, in Mississippi or in Chicago.

David Rotundo - 2 albums: Blues Ignited / No Looking Back

Toronto blues harpist David Rotundo heard James Cotton perform at the El Mocambo in 1991. “He blew one note on the harmonica that hypnotized me…” The next day, Rotundo went out and bought a harmonica. “…and I’ve been playing the blues ever since.” Obsession with the blues led Rotundo on a diesel-fuelled roots tour of blues epicentres of the United States including New Orleans, Clarksdale, Austin, Memphis and Chicago with little more than his wits and a bag full of harmonicas. "I wanted to hear and experience the real thing.” He returned to Canada with a visceral perception of the blues and deep knowledge of blues history. After making stories of his own, he earned the right to tell them. Rotundo developed his own language of the blues, honing the technique that gives the voice power and authenticity.

In 1997, Rotundo led a band called The Blue Canadians around the Toronto circuit. In 2000, he was asked to join the legendary Jack de Keyzer Band, while continuing to tour internationally with The Blue Canadians. He was thrilled by the opportunity to play with “one of the best Canadian guitarists”. Aside from de Keyzer, Rotundo has performed with Lee Oskar (War), Ronnie Hawkins, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith (Muddy Waters), Madagascar Slim, Mel Brown, Jeff Healey, Johnny & Edgar Winter, Finis Tasby, James Cotton, Magic Slim and The Tear Drops, Elvis Costello, among many others.

In 2003, the newly formed “David Rotundo Band” emerged to overwhelming response from fans both new and old, as well as industry. Rotundo's awards & nominations include the co-awarded prestigious CBC/GALAXIE RISING STAR award, "Blues Album of 2001" award from the Canadian Independent Artist Association and multiple Maple Blues nominations and awards year after year.

As a songwriter who pulls inspiration from the world around him that fuels his continual writing, David Rotundo’s sound is described as unlike any other - when you see him perform, you’ll know instantly that he lives for what he does.
