Provogue will release Shades, singer-songwriter and guitarist Doyle Bramhall II’s dramatic debut for the label. The album comes hot on the heels of Bramhall’s 2016 critically acclaimed fourth record, Rich Man, his first solo album in 15 years.

In the intervening years between albums, Bramhall established himself as one of the most distinctive and sought-after guitarists around, performing with a dizzying array of artists that includes Roger Waters, Elton John, Gregg Allman, Allen Toussaint and T-Bone Burnett, to name a few. More significantly, Bramhall had spent over a decade as Eric Clapton’s musical right-hand man, collaborating closely with the legendary guitarist both in the studio and on stage. He’s also produced albums and written songs for Sheryl Crow and the Tedeschi Trucks Band, among others.

Shades is a spellbinding blend of grungy blues, raucous garage rock, transcendent psychedelia, and soothing, soul-stirring ballads that sees Bramhall reaching new heights as a multi-instrumentalist, producer and vocalist while responding to his heart’s most urgent commands as a lyricist and arranger.

“The new record finally feels like I’m comfortable in my own skin, like I don’t have anything to prove other than trying to express myself as honestly as I can,” says Bramhall. “As an artist, writer and producer, I’m in a good place, and I think I can allow this flow of music to come out and form a real body of work that my fans can appreciate. I’m thrilled to have them go on this journey with me.”

Throughout much of Shades, Bramhall addresses deeply personal themes – on the R&B-laced “Everything You Need” and the elegant ballad “Searching For Love,” he examines matters of the heart. But on the gritty, soulful rocker “Love and Pain,” he takes on gun violence, a song inspired by last year’s concert massacre in Las Vegas.

Performing alongside Bramhall on Shades is an ace group of musicians he’s worked with over the years – bassist Chris Bruce, multi-instrumentalist and string arranger Adam Minkoff, and drummers Carla Azar and Abe Rounds – and there are also notable appearances by friends and luminaries: Eric Clapton, Norah Jones, the Tedeshi Trucks band, and Austin buds the Greyhounds. “Without appearing immodest, I can admit that I’ve led a pretty charmed life,” Bramhall says. “I’m thrilled and honored to have all of these incredible people guest on my record.”

Among the first bands confirmed to play at the Mahindra Blues Festival were The Tedeschi Trucks Band, formed by blues vocalist Susan Tedeschi and guitarist Derek Trucks, who has been voted number 16 on ROLLING STONE’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Following their 2011 debut release Revelator, which won the Best Blues Album at the 2012 Grammy Awards, the Tedeschi Trucks Band released Made Up Mind in August this year, moving to a groovy, southern rock sound with equal acclaim. The Tedeschi Trucks Band, who branch out to a 10-piece live act featuring Tedeschi’s rugged vocals over Trucks’ roaring, dirty guitar licks, are the latest blues force who will debut in India in February. Tedeschi Trucks Band will also jam with American blues guitarist Doyle Bramhall II at the festival.

American blues guitarist and four-time Grammy winner Jimmie Vaughan will also debut in India in February for the fourth edition of the festival. Vaughan, who was confirmed to play the 2013 edition, dropped out in January after suffering a heart attack. Vaughan is now confirmed to play at at Mahindra Blues Festival, which takes place on February 15th and 16th, 2014 in Mumbai.

The lineup also includes blues guitarist Zac Harmon and Chicago blues band Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials, who will make their India debut at the festival. Indian bands on the lineup include Shillong blues rock act Soulmate and Mumbai instrumental rock band Blackstratblues. Says Owen Roncon, of festival organizers Oranjuice Entertainment, “Jimmie Vaughan was keen on doing this show since he couldn’t make it last year. Apart from that, our focus is on getting young blues acts and exposing a younger side of the genre.”

Roncon adds that Soulmate will be an act to watch out for at the festival, where they launch their third full-length album and play a special set. Says Roncon, “Soulmate are doing a brand new set. They’re bringing a lot of their folk musicians from Shillong and planning to go with a folk blues sound.”

This album, long awaited by fans who have followed Bramhall’s collaborations with artists as far-ranging as Tedeschi Trucks Band to Roger Waters, is his first in over a decade. The album reflects both his extensive experience in the interim with such artists as Eric Clapton, whom he’s worked closely with for more than ten years (and who hails him as one of the most gifted guitarists he’s ever heard) and Sheryl Crow, for whom he produced and composed songs for on the 2011 album 100 Miles from Memphis, as well as an intensive spiritual and musical journey that took him to India and Africa in search of new sounds and an inner peace sought following the death of his legendary father Doyle Bramhall.

“I’d been writing pretty consistently for other artists and projects since my last album and had stored a lot of songs, sort of documenting my life story,” says Bramhall, whose long list of collaboration credits further includes the likes of Roger Waters, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, B.B. King, T-Bone Burnett, Elton John, Gary Clark Jr., Gregg Allman, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Billy Preston, Erykah Badu, Questlove and Meshell Ndegeocello. Most recently Bramhall has teamed with ace guitarist Derek Trucks (both proclaimed as “The New Guitar Gods” by Guitar World when they served in Clapton’s band in the late 2000) in the Tedeschi Trucks Band, also starring Trucks’ wife Susan Tedeschi. Bramhall’s collaborations with Tedeschi Trucks have included production and standout tracks on each of their three acclaimed albums.

“I’d been busy touring and producing for other artists, and so I took a hiatus from recording and performing as a solo artist. All those experiences actually helped me develop new skills and I learned how to facilitate my own sound. I feel like the stars finally aligned to allow me to be completely myself as an artist for the first time—singer, guitar player, songwriter, producer- and take things that were happening in my life and put them into music.”
