Well you asked and we delivered! After many a request for Cherry to release a live album – here it is in all it’s glory and suitably called Late Night Lock In as we’re all on lockdown right now! But listening to music is very much allowed so order a copy, close your eyes and pretend you’re at a Cherry gig and sing along to crowd favourites such as Man Overboard, Come Back Home, Meet Me At The Station, Time Limits, as well as Cherry’s version of Wade In The Water, All You Need and much more!

Recorded over three separate performances from 2018 & 2019, this is an album you simply must add to your Cherry collection, the one album that truly captures that high energy CLM vibe, only experienced live. Recorded alongside Cherry’s faithful band of Max Milligan, Robbie Stewart-Mathews, Nick Slater, Brian Greene and with special guest Lee Vernon on blues harp, this is a hotpot of bluesy soulfulness at it’s best.

Cherry and the Blues Gems return for a third cd outing and folks it is stunning. The cd showcases the talents of group of musicians with the songs and recording sounding more mature and confident. Eleven tracks here consisting of ten originals and a cover from Papa Charlie Jackson.
The songs follow the many facets of all the human spirit; love, jealousy, humour and of course the good times as well, that will have you dancing and singing along as well as sitting back and reflecting in probably are what you have been through yourselves.

A double salvo of ‘Man Overboard’ and ‘Goin’ Down (To Memphis Tennessee)’, start the ball rolling with some up-tempo funky grooves, the former is a tale of a worn out relationship while the latter tells the tales of trips to the Mississippi Delta and the sights and sounds that were experienced. ‘He Wants More’ is a song about a woman’s perspective on a needy lover and has some wonderful 1940’s style backing vocals that sit behind some great brushwork from Flow. Another variance in style is used with the only cover ’Keep It Clean’ recorded with a ragtime skiffle, doing justice to the original.
The hauntingly beautiful ‘Way To Your Heart’ is a wonderful recording, featuring some superb acoustic guitar from Max Milligan and a terrific vocal from Cherry, honest lyrics of love and romance, definitely one of the many cd highlights, ‘Just Can’t Live Without You’ follows along as the second ballad on the cd, again another story on another aspect of love.
‘On Loan’ features some lovely harp from Robbie and slide from Max in a song that sounds a bit faster in tempo than when I first heard it live last year, another superb Cherry vocal. ‘Hunt You Down’ isn’t a stalkers song as the title suggests, but a rather a song about jealousy of the clingy kind, great toe-tapper.
‘Long Distance Lover’ is a s near to perfection as it gets for a track, the music has a great wonderful Latin-gypsy vibe about it that’s infectious, definitely a contender for numerous radio plays, this track played live will have you dancing away from the first few bars.
Throughout the cd there is some awesome musicianship, Nick Slater provides some delicious Dobro, and his instrumental ‘Sittin’ On The Porch’ is a perfect showcase. The finale is a song called ‘Legend’ adapted from a poem by Cherry’s father, accompanied on banjo by Robbie, this song is a tribute to her grandad who was a major influence in her life.

Cherry’s shows her versatility with her throaty yet warm, belting yet rein tightening vocals, that show why she is a rising star on the blues and roots scene. Co-writer and producer Max Milligan is brilliant on the acoustic guitar, Nick Slater on Dobro and Robbie Stewart-Mathews on harp, bass and banjo, show why they are some of the best musicians in Britain, finally Flow with some subtle and sublime drumming with both sticks and brushes.

This is a glorious cd from Cherry and The Blues Gems, everyone concerned should be extremely proud of this achievement. I would be very surprised if it didn’t end up in most people’s top ten cd’s of 2012.
