When the Kweskin band broke up in 1968, the couple stayed Amo with their label (Reprise) and began recording together as Geoff & Maria Muldaur. They moved to Woodstock, NY, to take advantage of the burgeoning music scene there and issued two albums -- 1970's Pottery Pie and 1971's Sweet Potatoes -- before Geoff departed in 1972 to form Better Days with Paul Butterfield, a move that signaled not only the end of the couple's musical partnership, but their marriage as well.

From Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, the spirit of the blues - on the face of it so different from what people percieve to be our national Canadian character - is alive and well. What began in Mississippi and migrated to Chicago, has spread all over the world. There are probably blues bands in Baie Comeau and Brandon, as well as in Camrose and Cornwall, Stephensville and Saskatoon, Windsor and Wetaskiwin.

Each week, Saturday Night Blues - the national radio network's weekly two-hour extravaganza of downhome music - offers a two-hour tour of the best blues in the world. When the program was in its initial planning stages, it was decided to feature as much made-in-Canada blues as possible - and there was no shortage to choose from. This compilation celebrates the fourth season of the program, and it also celebrates the rich diversity of home-grown music in the blues traditions. /Excerpt from the liner notes by Holger Peterson

Myles Goodwyn's passion for the blues began in 60's when he started listening to American blues artists like BB King, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. Although the blues songs he wrote over the years never made it onto an April Wine album, he kept saving them for the blues album he knew he was going to make one day. Myles Goodwyn And Friends Of The Blues is the result of these sessions.

Some of the Friends joining Goodwyn are Jack de Keyzer, Garret Mason, David Wilcox, Amos Garret, Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne, Joe Murphy, Frank Marino, Shaun Verreault, Bill Stevenson, Rick Derringer and more.

This is the first live album of this Canadian guitar virtuoso with the wonderful mellow baritone voice (mindful of foggy nights on the West Coast). Amos Garrett and his band, the Eh Team, are in great shape here, just moving along and laying down a very satisfying and moving groove. The many forms of the blues -- from laid-back big-band jump blues to the big-city Chicago sound, country blues, and rip-out-the-stops electric blues -- are all displayed here, with Garrett's rich voice and stunning guitar work leading everything along. This is no pick-up band. After playing together for ten years, their grown-together familiarity is apparent all throughout the disc, and they also get their individual chances to shine in many places. Ron Casat ably takes the vocal chores on his writing contribution, "Looking for a Sign." The shining gem on this excellent live album is the old Santo & Johnny tune "Sleepwalk"; listen to the daring guitar work Garrett takes to the edge with this tune. Or you might want to give a good loud listen to "Willie and the Hand Jive," the Johnny Otis classic; just try keeping your feet off the dancefloor during this astonishing version. ~Bob Gottlieb
