James Montgomery was described by the late actor/musician Jim Belushi as “simply one of the best” and also as someone who is “funkier than a six pack of onions”. In 1970 he formed The James Montgomery Blues Band and soon they were the hottest live properties on the Boston New England music scene along with J Geils Band and Aerosmith. Signed then to Capricorn Records in ’73, reviewers wrongly assumed the band were from the south when in fact they were from Detroit originally.

James then signed to the Waterhouse label for his blues/rock album “Duck Fever” which was recorded in West 54th St, New York with some heavy hitting session musicians guesting and released in 1978. Now remastered and released on CD for the very first time.

Jay Willie & James Montgomery - Cadillac Walk

Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 39:20
Size: 90,7 MB

Scans: Front

1. Three Cool Cats (2:45)

7. Montgomery Boogie (2:46)
8. I'm Yours And I'm Hers (3:18)
9. Eatin' Dry Onions (4:01)
10. Mean Town Blues (3:57)

Combining the dual rockin’ blues genius of veteran guitaristslide guitaristvocalist Jay Willie – longtime leader of the Connecticut based Jay Willie Blues Band – and legendary Detroit-born singer/harmonica master James Montgomery, Cadillac Walk is probably the most boisterous and energizing album you’ll hear all year.

You can check Montgomery’s superstar credits if you like (tours with Aerosmith, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, et al) but what matters most is that Willie’s been a longtime fan from the time his cohort led the James Montgomery Band and the Shaboo Allstars on the New England circuit years ago. In 2016, Willie reached out to Montgomer to see if he would front a show.

The creative chemistry forged that night, combined with several years of social media exchanges, now culminates in this rip-roarin’ collection which romps through history, focusing most intently on their early R&B influences.

The sole Willie original, the barn-burning instrumental dance jamhomage “Montgomery Boogie” is worth the price of admission alone, and a perfect entry point to a series of raw, wild, amped up (and sometimes just plain cool and soulful) re-imaginings of gems by Lieber & Stoller (“Three Cool Cats”), Moon Martin (“Cadillac Walk”), The Rolling Stones (“Satisfaction”), Johnny Winter (“I’m Yours and I’m Hers,” “Mean Town Blues”), Willie Cobbs (“Eatin’ Dry Onions”) and even Tracy Chapman (“Give Me One Reason”). /Jonathan Widran

When blues legend James Montgomery plays the harmonica, he "brings it on home". Whether it's recording with Kid Rock, sitting in with Gregg Allman, or fronting his hot band of thirty years, Montgomery plays with authority. While growing up in Detroit he learned first-hand from the masters - James Cotton, John Lee Hooker, and Jr. Wells - at the legendary "Chessmate." Over the years, he's carried on in the tradition and continues to be a vital presence in Blues as one of the most dynamic performers on the scene.

In 1970, while attending Boston University, Montgomery formed the James Montgomery Band. His inimitable (oh yeah, he majored in English) harmonica playing combined with his incredibly energetic live shows led to the band's quick ascension on the New England music scene. Within two years, the James Montgomery band was among the hottest acts in Boston along with J. Geils and Aerosmith, and they were quickly signed to a multi-album deal with Capricorn Records.

Since that time, James has recorded six albums. His first, "First Time Out" has been remastered and re-released by MRG/Capricorn. Other include "James Montgomery Band" on Island Records which was number nine on Billboard's national playlist, "Duck Fever" with members of the David Letterman Band, "Live Trax," with the Uptown Horns (the Rolling Stones' horn section), and his release on Tone-Cool, "The Oven Is On."

10. Rivers Edge (2:26)
11. Changing Of The Guard (4:26)
12. Black Cadillac (3:39)

Veteran blues rocker James Montgomery has put together a varied, solid collection of songs on From Detroit to the Delta. As the album title implies, the collection ranges in styles from uptown to urban to a Delta crossroads.

Originally from Detroit but based in Boston, harmonica player and singer Montgomery has been a presence on the blues scene since the late 1960s, with the release of his band’s first album – First Time Out – coming in 1973. Montgomery has been around. Once affiliated with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen and backup to Delbert McClinton, he also played for four years with Johnny Winter and toured with or backed a laundry list of rockers and bluesmen.

With several legendary guest artists, including Winter and James Cotton, there are some memorable tunes on this album. The opening song, “Intoxicated,” has an R&B flavor, as does the Willie Dixon tune that follows, “Same Thing.” “Little Johnny” features Winter playing some sizzling slide guitar, and “Who Do You Love” features rapper DMC (Darryl Matthews McDaniels) in a new twist to the classic Bo Diddley (and Doors) song. “The Motor City is Burning” starts out with a slower blues tempo but builds to a blues-rock crescendo with horns. Although the album is styled Detroit to the Delta, most of the tunes favor the uptempo sounds of Detroit, except for the instrumental “Rivers Edge” and the closing number, Lightnin’ Hopkins’ “Black Cadillac,” with Cotton joining in on harmonica.

Montgomery’s band is comprised of a solid group of veterans, including George McCann on guitars, David Hull on bass, and Seth Pappas on drums. /Bill Wilcox

Gary Hoey - Deja Blues

Bitrate: 320K/s

[3:06] 1. Boss You Around

[3:38] 8. Got To Believe (Feat. Frank Hannon)
[4:21] 9. Deja Blues
[4:16] 10. Hold Your Head Up High

Deja Blues is an interesting collection of blues tunes that features the blues skills of the talented rock and surf style guitarist Gary Hoey. Most people know him as an instrumental guitar player along the lines of a Steve Vai or Joe Satriani because of his billboard hit “Hocus Pocus,” or possibly know him from his Ho Ho Hoey Christmas albums, or have seen trading licks on tour with Jeff Beck, Ted Nugent, Peter Frampton, and Dick Dale. Let’s set the record straight – Gary is not a one trick rock guitar shredder.

The album has many Gary Hoey originals, some of which feature great guest appearances, including James Montgomery on “Boot Hill Blues,” Jon Butcher on the Texas Shuffle “Almost Over You,” Johnny A on “She’s Walking,” and finally, Frank Hannon on the southern rocking “Got to Believe.” There are a couple of covers of traditional blues songs where Gary makes the blues rock. “Going Down” is a down, dirty rockin’ take on the Don Nix penned classic recorded by everyone from the late great Freddie King to Led Zeppelin and Pearl Jam. Along with that is the lightly distorted Albert King classic “Born Under A Bad Sign.” An interesting track at the end is “Hold Your Head Up High” which features some slide guitar playing. If you close your eyes and forget who you’re listening to you might confuse this with an outtake form a Derek Trucks Band release.

There are two stand out tracks on this album though. “Stranger” is an atmospheric mysterious blues where the tones clearly set the mood for one of the lyrics when Gary sings about being “like a stranger in my own town.” The best work on here though is when Gary lets his guitar do all the work on the instrumental slow blues title track – “Deja Blues.” The tension builds and reaches what you think is the peak at each chorus only to be taken to another level with another solo and then finally releases you back to the original slow blues jam.

If you’re looking for an album that straddles that fine line of blues and rock without turning into nothing but a guitar shredders excuse to solo than this fits the bill. It’s always interesting to see how artists who are mostly known for a different style of playing interpret the blues. Deja Blues does the blues justice with his pyrotechnic fretboard fluidity and ability to blend them with his rock background without losing the feeling and intent.
