This is the third volume in Sub Rosa's collection devoted to rare and lost recordings from the '20s to the '60s, following Dr. Boogie Presents Rarities from the Bob Hite Vaults and Oh, Run Into Me, But Don't Hurt Me! Female Blues Singers -- Rarities 1923-1930. Shim Sham Shimmy has been assembled by Belgian radio personality, musicologist, and Canned Heat devotee, Walter De Paduwa aka Dr. Boogie. Is it really possible to imagine what modern music would sound like if a few pioneering geniuses had not had the idea of electrifying their instruments, especially guitar and harmonica, between 1945 and 1950? Some purists pan this evolution, but, in the '50s, the new sound was heard and embraced at all the studios and night clubs in the United States; it would become a staple on the radio, and in pop culture in general, radically transforming the blues, boogie and country into acts of rebellion. This collection pays tribute to about thirty artists, some of whom later became known, like "Master of the Telecaster" Albert Collins, boogie-woogie and blues pianist Champion Jack Dupree, slide guitar innovator Homesick James, harmonica and blues singer, Sammy Myers, "The Boogie Disease" author Doctor Ross, and one-man band wild-man, Joe Hill Louis. However, the real treat is having an opportunity to hear fabulous unknowns who all, one day, had the chance to be recorded, either in a studio, on the street, or on a back porch, before returning to anonymity shortly after. Almost all of the artists presented here hailed from the Southern states; some of them stayed there their whole life, others emigrated up North, moving up the Mississippi, or toward the West to settle in California. The music included here is part of the foundations of all the modern music that would take the world by storm up to our present time. The summertime blues have hit Geezerville hard this year. That means heavy doses of Muddy, Lightnin,’ and Mississippi Fred McDowell with the occasional Allman Brothers thrown in to get the blood pumping. Central Texas has been represented with an almost forgotten gem from 1991: It’s About Time by T.D. Bell & Erbie Bowser. It was on the sound system between bands at the Continental Club one night recently, which caused me to pull it off the shelf and revel in its exquisite fusion of jumping-at-the-roadhouse and darker-than-night.

Bell and Bowser both passed away in the mid-to-late 1990s, but their legacy remains through the band they formed twenty years ago, the Blues Specialists, which, in altered form, continue to hold down the Friday happy hour slot at the Continental. Electric guitarist Bell earned the nickname “Little T-Bone” for his style reminiscent of T-Bone Walker, while Bowser’s boogie-woogie piano was equally influential.

Of It’s About Time’s 15 tracks, several are blues standards - Charles Brown’s “Dark Night,” Walker’s “T-Bone Shuffle,” Jessie Mae Robinson’s “Cold, Cold Feeling” – but the production, led by famed folklorist Tary Owens, is tantalizing and serene. It’s 71 minutes of Texas big band blues with a style untethered to commercial considerations, yet overflowing with superb musicianship and emotion. Included in the band are current Austin blues icons W.C. Clark, Mark Kazanoff, and Mel Davis, the current leader of the Blues Specialists, which offers an intriguing glimpse of where they were then. ~by Jim Caligiuri

So how did Jr. Johnny, the New York City bred grandson of polka playing Bohemian gypsies, end up devoting his life to Chicago-style blues? Like his playing, Junior Johnny's answer is both delightfully tempestuous and effortlessly profound. "When I heard Muddy Waters, I just freaked out!" he exclaims. After honing his craft in several early '60s teenage garage bands (actually "apartment bands," the neighbor-annoying NYC equivalent), Johnny was drafted and served as a combat MP in Vietnam. When his tour of duty ended, he moved to San Francisco and was soon making a name for himself with now-legendary blues men like Mike Bloomfield and Jimmy Witherspoon. Subsequently, Junior got his dream gig performing alongside the man who would christen him "Jr. Johnny": the great John Lee Hooker. "Hooker said he wanted me to have a nickname and just gave me one on the spot," Junior explains. "It stuck."

When the twin responsibilities of family and higher education forced him to give up life on the road, Junior Johnny began a series of wildly divergent professions that later gave him grist for his highly descriptive songwriting. "I've been everything from a union carpenter to a winemaster, "he says, "but I just wanna be out there playing!" Junior is currently busy promoting his Extreme CD while readying material for his next release, due out January, 2015. As of this date, Junior has written 190 original songs.

With Rotblos Peps Persson returned to what made him famous, Swedish translations of blues standards. Not that he ever stopped playing them, or including one or two on his more reggae-based albums, but after Blues På Svenska, it took 22 years until he released another blues album. But even on this pure Chicago album there are hints of Peps Persson's love for African music. One is in the guitar figures on "Främlingsblues," a cover of Elmore James' "Stranger Blues," that gives the song a good momentum. As usual, the band is extremely competent, and the dialect and the humour of the translated texts add a new dimension to the often chauvinistic Chicago blues lyrics, like in "Go'maren Lilla Skoltös" and Sonny Boy Williamson's "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl," a song you seem to be allowed to sing no matter your age. Peps Persson was awarded with a Swedish Grammy for Best Lyrics for Rotblos, not a common thing when it comes to translations. And blues have not often been played better in Sweden, but still, after the novelty of the translations has worn off, you may get a vague unsatisfactory feeling. It may be so that playing old songs in an old fashioned manner, no matter how good, can never really compete with the best the present has to offer. This is not only a cover album, but neither is it far enough from being. But that is the only thing that keeps this album from getting an absolute top rating.

This CD is just dripping with soul. Leeann has this wonderful kind of old time bluesy rock thing happening that echoes of Motown, Janice Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Marcia Ball and plenty of artists from the 60’s and 70’s that aren’t around anymore. Her warm, full and slightly raspy voice is strong and consistent, and very versatile. As good as it is, the musicianship here is probably even better.

There’s no hiding the blazing melodic lead guitar solos by Johnny Mac and Larry Wilson, the slide guitar work of Papa Mali, the rhythm guitars by Sunnyman and Jackson, Riley Osbourn’s Hammond B3, bass by Courtney Audain and drums by Frosty. Several other talented guests round the recording out nicely. The musicianshipmakes for a big bog sound that way exceeds the budget for this independent release. That’s what friends are for, and Leeann has plenty of talented friends.

Songwriting is also strong, with Leeann writing or co-writing most of the tracks. "What’s Your Situation" is a jazz departure, which reminds me of the jazz-pop from the mid 90’s. Extra points goes for track 5, a tribute to Austin’s beloved Mambo John Traynor.

Based out of Los Angeles, CA, Johnny Hawthorn has been amplifying his reputation as a world class guitar player and songwriter. Originally from Philadelphia, PA, he came to Hollywood as an eager player and immersed himself in the music scene.

Hitting the bar, club and backyard party circuit and with his versatility on guitar, lapsteel and mandolin he became the “hired gun” in town and has played for numerous local and national bands.

The first CD titled “Johnny Hawthorn Band” (released in 2006) was well received and the instrumental song “Cream” still receives substantial rotation on internet and satellite radio. Mike Varney from Guitar Player Magazine wrote: “Hawthorn is a gifted player on all fronts, with phasing reminiscent of Clapton and Hendrix…”

The 2nd CD Death & Taxes, received 2009’s Recommended CD’s from “American Music” (Belgium). Blues Matters (UK) magazine wrote, “As a guitar player he can be awesome, whether in out-and-out country mode or playing full throttle blues rock.”

"Pawn Shop Tattered Heart" marks the third CD for the Johnny Hawthorn Band and pushes the band forward to a more polished sound favoring more riff oriented songs. Recorded over the past few years, the project started out as a "just for fun" two song project and gradually turned into a full 11 song project. Throughout the course of the project, different rhythm sections were used which gives each song it's own character and flavor. Additionally many different guitar sounds and amps were employed to give each song a layered effect with different sounds coming in and out of the mix.

Sessions at West 54th: Recorded Live in New York is a live music DVD by Keb' Mo' recorded in June 1997 which was then released in 2000. The performance was recorded for the television series Sessions at West 54th, a studio located in West 54th Street in New York City. The songs recorded on the album are all from Keb' Mo's two prior studio albums. Unlike the majority of Keb' Mo's albums, this contains no songs by Robert Johnson.

The Queen of Southern Soul presents a new Deluxe version of her It's All About Me release with 14 tracks including 4 brand new bonus songs. 2013 National Blues Artist of the Year in the Jackson Music Awards.

Ms. Jody was born to the late Reverend Joe and Vivian Sims Pickens in Chicago, IL. She was raised in Bay Springs, Mississippi where she presently lives.

Ms. Jody started singing when she was just a little girl. In fact, there is never a time when she can say she doesn't remember singing. Ms. Jody says that the gift of singing was just born in her and it is really a gift from God.

Although she had been singing all her life, Ms. Jody did not go to her first Blues show until Fathers Day in 2004 when her brother, Dale Pickens, took her. On that show she saw Denise LaSalle, and O. B. Buchana. That's when Ms Jody says she decided that she could do that, and she wanted to do it too. It did not take long for Ms. Jody to do what she said, and in just about a year she had her first CD ready for release.

In 2006, at the suggestion of her friends Leo Johnson and William Day, Ms. Jody made a visit to Ecko Records in Memphis, TN where she was introduced to the staff. Shortly thereafter she joined the Ecko Records family and her first CD was released. The CD, entitled "You're My Angel" has brought Ms. Jody immediate recognition from the radio station programmers and their listeners. Songs like "Ms. Jody", "Sugar Daddy", and "Get Drunk Party" are all receiving heavy airplay and are creating a buzz about this new singer with the sexy voice. Although her image is that of a sexy and streetwise woman, Ms. Jody insists she is really just a backwoods country girl who enjoys life and loves to feel good and to have fun. Whether the image people have of her is true or not, it is definitely true that audiences have found a lot to love about the songs and the sound of Ms. Jody.

Ms.Jody released her second CD titled "What You Gonna Do When The Rent Is Due" in November of 2006. The CD contained the Southern Soul hit "You Dog's About To Kill My Cat" along with several other cuts that were played all over the Country. Ms. Jody's reputation with the fans and Radio Station P.D.'s and D.J's continued to grow with CD

In February of 2008 Ms.Jody's had her third CD release with "I Never Take A Day Off". In addition to a re-release of her first hit the CD also contained the hit song "Energizer Bunny".

The year 2008 also saw Ms. Jody nominated for several awards including the Jackson Music Awards "International Female Vocalist of The Year", and the Jus Blues Music Awards "Best New Southern Soul Artist Of The Year".

Mick has recorded a blend of original songs and added in a few surprise covers. With songs ranging from the rock-solid electric blues of “Blowtorch Love” to the jug-band style reworking of WC Handy’s classic “Beale Street Blues,” this album gives the listener a taste of many styles of the blues.

Mick and Producer Jeff Jensen have reworked the rock classic “The Letter” into a slow blues and brought it back to Memphis, and in their hands the Johnny Mercer Jazz standard “Blues in the Night” is given its bluesiest take ever. The album incorporates several blues styles and forms, taking full advantage of Mick’ tastes and experience as well as the talents of the amazing musicians who helped him put this together.

This album is a celebration of the blues, with support by some of the genre’s fastest rising stars. Produced by Jeff Jensen, who also is featured on lead guitar, Jeff and Mick assembled a dream team with Bill Ruffino on bass, Doug McMinn on drums, and Chris Stephenson on organ. This core band was joined by such notables as Victor Wainwright, Brandon Santini and Eric Hughes. Also contributing their amazing vocal talents are Reba Russell and Redd Velvet.

Robin Trower may seem a modest and quiet man, but his achievements are great. Over the decades since he formed his own band back in 1973, he has conceived many fine solo albums that showcase his exceptional talents as a guitarist, singer and composer.

Here’s a truly outstanding new collection of some of the finest recordings by one of rock’s most admired guitar heroes. This double CD set comprises 35 tracks gathered from a range of original recordings released between 1987-2013, now all together for the first time on one album. Our compilation runs from his first studio album after leaving Chrysalis Records, 1987’s ‘Passion’, to the latest highly regarded ‘Roots And Branches’, an album of covers and retro-inspired originals that pays homage to Trower’s blues roots.

Reggae and Blues are unlikely bedfellows, but Errol Linton's Blues Vibe bring the two together on "Vibing it!" their first CD, and manage to pull it off very successfully. The result is a highly original sound, which is strongly Blues-based, but mixes in lilting reggae rhythms as a backdrop for several of the tracks. Even though nine of the tracks are cover versions, each one is re-interpreted to give it a new lease of life. Who would have thought that you could take Howlin' Wolf's "Howlin' for my darling," for example, and give it a reggae makeover? The choice of covers is interesting too: it's nice to see Papa Lightfoot, J.B. Hutto, J.B. Lenoir, and Frankie Lee Sims all getting a name check alongside the better known Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf, and Big Joe Liggins.

After being discovered busking on the London Underground by a BBC producer, Eazy Errol Linton was included in a World Music TV series, alongside the music of Big Bill Broonzy. Errol is a fine harp player, which he amply demonstrates on a version of "Shake for me" which Willie Dixon would have approved of. It has a raucous jug band feel to it, with Jean-Pierre Lampe pounding away on the double bass for all he's worth, while in the percussion section Sam Kelly taps out the rhythm on the bottle, and Tyrone Balkissoon plays washboard.

Linton's harp playing reflects a range of influences including Sonny Boy Williamson II -- he learned to play by listening to his records -- and there are detectable tinges of reggae melodeon players in there too. As well as being a mean harp player, Eazy Errol is a talented songwriter too. The topics of his songs may be fairly standard Blues fare -- love and life -- but he knows how to wrap the lyrics up in an infectiously catchy tune. I found myself continually humming "Packin' my bags" after just one listen, and the driving beat of "Live the life" is simply irresistible.

The tracks on "Vibing it!" were cut live in the studio by the band which has a fairly fluid line-up but is usually a six or seven piece combo here. The outcome is very good indeed, which is testament to the togetherness of the members of the band. The idea to cut it live seems to be part of a growing trend of trying to recapture the live feel of Blues on CD. Check out B.B. King's "Blues from the Bayou," and Snooky Pryor's "Can't Stop Blowin'" for two other fine examples.

"Vibing it!" is just the tonic for the winter months because there's a vibrant warm feel to the music, possibly a result of the Caribbean influences shining through. The end product is a perfect illustration of just how flexible the Blues can be, given half a chance, and should silence any doubters who think the Blues has nowhere left to go. If I owned a record company, I'd sign these boys up on the strength of this highly impressive debut.

Mickey Thomas may forever be associated with Jefferson Starship, the 1980s-era hitmakers that cranked out such chart-topping guilty pleasures as “Jane” and “We Built This City,” but his musical roots go back much further than that. Thomas began his career singing gospel music, moving on to Southern rock when he hooked up with the Elvin Bishop Band. During his tenure with Bishop, Thomas could apply his talents to a smorgasbord of American music.

Guitarist and producer Tim Tucker put together the Bluesmasters in 2007 with pianist Sean Benjamin. The guys were just having fun, cranking out old blues classics, when somebody had the bright idea to bring in Thomas to sing with the band. By this time, Benjamin had left, but he comes back around to pound the keys on a couple of tunes, and for Thomas, his performances on The Bluesmasters featuring Mickey Thomas are a return to the blues, soul, and R&B music that he grew up with in Georgia, and sang with Bishop nearly 25 years ago.

At his high-energy, 1970s peak as a bandleader, James Cotton was a bouncing, sweaty, whirling dervish of a bluesman, roaring his vocals and all but sucking the reeds right out of his defenseless little harmonicas with his prodigious lung power. Due to throat problems, Cotton's vocals are no longer what they used to be, but he remains a masterful instrumentalist. Cotton had some gargantuan shoes to fill when he stepped into Little Walter's slot as Muddy Waters' harp ace in 1954, but for the next dozen years, the young Mississippian filled the integral role beside Chicago's blues king with power and precision. Of course, Cotton had been preparing for such a career move for a long time, having learned how to wail on harp from none other than Sonny Boy Williamson himself.

Cotton was only a child when he first heard Williamson's fabled radio broadcasts for King Biscuit Time over KFFA out of Helena, Arkansas. So sure was Cotton of his future that he ended up moving into Williamson's home at age nine, soaking up the intricacies of blues harpdom from one of its reigning masters. Six years later, Cotton was ready to unleash a sound of his own.

Gigging with area notables Joe Willie Wilkins and Willie Nix, Cotton built a sterling reputation around West Memphis, following in his mentor's footsteps by landing his own radio show in 1952 over KWEM. Sam Phillips, whose Sun label was still a fledgling operation, invited Cotton to record for him, and two singles commenced: "Straighten Up Baby" in 1953 and "Cotton Crop Blues" the next year. Legend has it Cotton played drums instead of harp on the first platter.

When Waters rolled through Memphis minus his latest harpist (Junior Wells), Cotton hired on with the legend and went to Chicago. Unfortunately for the youngster, Chess Records insisted on using Little Walter on the great majority of Waters' waxings until 1958, when Cotton blew behind Waters on "She's Nineteen Years Old" and "Close to You." At Cotton's suggestion, Waters had added an Ann Cole tune called "Got My Mojo Working" to his repertoire. Walter played on Muddy Waters' first studio crack at it, but that's Cotton wailing on the definitive 1960 reading (cut live at the Newport Jazz Festival).

By 1966, Cotton was primed to make it on his own. Waxings for Vanguard, Prestige, and Loma preceded his official full-length album debut for Verve Records in 1967. His own unit then included fleet-fingered guitarist Luther Tucker and hard-hitting drummer Sam Lay. Throwing a touch of soul into his eponymous debut set, Cotton ventured into the burgeoning blues-rock field as he remained with Verve through the end of the decade.

In 1974, Cotton signed with Buddah and released 100% Cotton, one of his most relentless LPs, with Matt "Guitar" Murphy sizzling on backup. A decade later, Alligator issued another stand-out Cotton LP, High Compression, which was split evenly between traditional-style Chicago blues and funkier, horn-driven material. Harp Attack!, a 1990 summit meeting on Alligator, paired Cotton with three exalted peers: Wells, Carey Bell, and comparative newcomer Billy Branch. Antone's Records was responsible for a pair of gems: a live 1988 set reuniting the harpist with Murphy and Tucker, and a stellar 1991 studio project, Mighty Long Time. Cotton moved into the 21st century as one of the last surviving originators of the Chicago blues sound, and never slowed his pace a bit, releasing a series of fine albums, including Fire Down Under the Hill (2000) and Baby, Don't You Tear My Clothes (2004), both for Telarc Records, and Giant (2010) and Cotton Mouth Man (2013), both on Alligator Records. ~Biography by Bill Dahl

Film director Robert Mugge has been responsible for a number of documentaries chronicling indigenous American musical styles, notably Deep Blues (1991) and Gather at the River: A Bluegrass Celebration (1994). Last of the Mississippi Jukes, which had its first exposure on a premium cable movie channel and was released on DVD concurrently with this audio soundtrack CD, is closest to Deep Blues among his efforts, though it is more concerned with electric blues. Mugge took his cameras into the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, MS (a re-created juke joint established by the film star Morgan Freeman), and the Subway Lounge in Jackson, MS. There he captured a variety of lively performers who are heard here. Patrice Moncell, who gets two cuts, is a particular standout, turning in a bravura treatment of the blues standard "Stormy Monday" and a lengthy, salacious recitative called "Strokin'." Other standouts include Chris Thomas King's "John Law Burned Down the Liquor Sto," a shaggy-dog bootlegging story, and Greg "Fingers" Taylor's "Subway Swing," which details goings-on at the Subway Lounge. But the entire disc demonstrates that the blues are alive and well in the clubs of Mississippi. ~Review by William Ruhlmann

The high rating for this compilation of Chicago blues women comes not from its star power -- clearly Koko Taylor is missing, at the very least -- but for its sheer power and the consistent quality of its performances. Assembled as part of Delmark's 50th Anniversary celebration, Wild About That Thang contains 13 burning tracks from the marginal -- Mary Johnson with the Dixie Stompers in two previously unissued performances from 1955 -- to the legendary -- Dinah Washington from 1945, with a Delmark recording featuring Charles Mingus, Lucky Thompson, and Milt Jackson in the band -- and everything in between. Thematically and stylistically, this set covers all the bases as well, from the hardcore electric Chicago blues on Big Time Sarah's "Long Tall Daddy," to the risqué, low-key, jazz blues of Blue Lu Barker's "Don't You Feel My Leg," and the bawdy Dixieland swing of Katherine Davis' version of the title track. But the single greatest accomplishment of this comp is how much it showcases current and recent blues singers form the Windy City. We might never have heard of the neo-trad high styles of Grana Louise, Davis, the spine-shaking soul-blues of Zora Young, or the tough and tender Karen Carroll without it. 13 fantastic cuts, a budget price, and the opportunity to learn something -- what more could you want? ~Review by Thom Jurek

In the 1990’s, the First Class Blues Band was already one of the top blues bands based in Germany, with two critically acclaimed CDs on Acoustic Music Records. But by the new millennium things got quieter for the band made up of US expats and German musicians, due to numerous other musical projects of its members. Although they still played together occasionally, it wasn’t until recently that new management and simply the fun and the quality of their concerts led to increased activities of the First Class Blues Band, which now culminate in their new studio CD at hand.

The five first-class musicians have recorded a well-rounded mixture of mostly lesser known covers as well as five original blues and R&B songs. Included are, for example, Tommie Harris’ masterful interpretation of the slow blues “I Kicked The Habit”, plus a catchy R&B-number of his own that sounds like it was recorded in 1962 in Detroit at Motown Records. Kevin DuVernay sings “Lady Luck” by Lloyd Price, in whose band Kevin’s grandfather played bass way back when. The New Orleans sound of “Lipstick Traces” and the swamp groove of “Zydeco Boogaloo” are also new facets of an already very versatile band.

Christian Rannenberg’s exquisite piano playing, the dynamic yet sensitive guitar mastery of Jan Hirte, Thomas Feldmann’s honking saxophone, the unfailing beat of the rhythm section Harris/DuVernay (who have been working together for over 30 years now), plus the convincing vocals by all band members – with its outstanding, exhilarating Blues and R&B, the First Class Blues Band still more than lives up to its name.

British blues guitarist Mick Clarke began his solo career in the early 80s and has become an established name on the European scene. Praised for his fiery "straight from the wood" guitar sound, he has appeared on numerous festivals with artists such as Robert Cray, Johnny Winter and the late Rory Gallagher.

Mick has also toured several times in the U.S.A. and appeared with artists such as Johnny Winter and Canned Heat. The Southern California Blues Society called him "One of the finest blues players to come out of England".

Mick began his career with KILLING FLOOR part of the British blues boom of the late 60s. The band backed Texas blues guitar star Freddie King and toured with legends such as Howlin' Wolf and Otis Spann. In the mid 70s Mick co-formed SALT a powerful blues-rock act who were a big hit on the London scene in the 70s playing regularly at the Marquee and other top venues. The band played at the Reading Festival and also opened for Muddy Waters at two major London concerts.

THE MICK CLARKE BAND originally started working around the London area in the early 80s, but quickly received offers of work from mainland Europe and the United States. Early festival appearances such as the Belgium R&B Festival in Peer confirmed their appeal for continental audiences, while the US tours established a world wide reputation for the band.
The tracks on the "You Need Love" compilation were among the first studio tracks recorded by the band in the early 80s and included the talents of Rory Gallagher Band members Lou Martin, Wilgar Campbell and Mark Feltham, plus other top players including drummer Ron Berg from Blodwyn Pig. They were recorded at Elephant Studio in Wapping, London by engineers Chris Mansbridge and Nick Robbins.

The John Frick Band is a 4-piece band, based in The Hague, The Netherlands, focusing on performing and recording original music that is firmly rooted in the traditions of blues music. To date, we have recorded 2 albums, Boogie With The John Frick Blues Band (2011) and Urban Crossroads, which will be released by Blueshine Records in January 2014.

The band members are: John Frick (vocals, guitar, slide guitar), Leo Birza (vocals, keyboards), Michel De Man (drums) and Nico Hart (bass guitar, backing vocals).

Our music is heavily influenced by classic blues legends such as Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Freddy King and many more. The modern American and British blues guitar masters, like Peter Green, Rory Gallagher, Jimmie Vaughan, Sean Costello, and others, have also influenced our sound. Although comparisons can be made between our band and bands such as these, we have our own sound and an original approach to presenting our blues. We do however strive to recapture the energy and passion we hear in the music of the artists who inspire us.

Having returned to The Netherlands from a four-year stay in Belgium in August 2009, I put together the final line-up of John Frick and the Blues Hombres, a band that had been performing in various guises in Holland and Belgium for a period of 10 years. Within 2 years however it evolved into the 3-piece John Frick Blues Band, which was established in January 2011, together with drummer, Michel de Man, and seasoned rockabilly guitarist, Roel Loen, stepping in temporarily on bass guitar.

Later in 2011, after seeing performances on YouTube, I contacted keyboard player, Leo Birza, and asked him if he would join us. It turned out to be a perfect match and thus our joint adventures through Bluesville continued deftly.

By November 2013 however, after having made a significant contribution to the development of the band, Roel was ready to leave the band to focus on his guitar playing. In stepped Nico Hart, who had been playing in Mak Wolven’s band, The Insiders. Inspired by new and fresh prospects and the upcoming release of our album, Urban Crossroads, we decided to turn things up a few notches in order to raise the band’s profile in the live music scene.

Since our inception, we’ve played a number of venues in and around The Netherlands. A highlight for us was our tour to South Africa in 2012, during which we performed at Africa’s most prestigious blues festival, The Table Mountain Blues Summit. Since then the band has continued along an exciting path of growth, development and expanding our blues horizons. Having completed writing the material for our third album, set for release in 2015, we will commence the new recording sessions in 2014.

Unfinished Business' is the hotly anticipated new album by blues guitarist, Mick Simpson, and the follow up to his successful albums 'Hard Road' and 'Cruel World'. Mick returns with 14 tracks of soaring blues guitar, driving rock anthems, upbeat country blues and melodic rock. Includes a diverse range of blues and rock styles Influenced by the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, Robert Johnson, BB King and Mark Knopfler.

In the early 1980's Mick worked as a session guitarist and was spotted by Elkie Brooks who asked him to tour in her band. BBC Radio One's Tommy Vance spoke to Mick backstage after a gig and as a result he played some of Mick's Instrumental tracks on his ‘Friday Night Rock Show’.
In the mid 1990's Mick worked with John Parr of 'St Elmo's Fire' fame, featuring on his album 'Man With A Vision'. A number of tracks from the album have featured on smash hit films, such as 'Running Man' with Arnold Schwarzenegger and 'Three Men And A Baby' with Tom Selleck. Mick then toured with ex Rolling Stone Bill Wyman's 'Rhythm Kings' and in 2004 his original track 'A Father's Son' won the International Songwriters Award sponsored by the Brits Trust. The track received major TV and radio airplay along with Mick's song 'Looking Through My Eyes' which was released to raise money and awareness of Autism. In June 2005 Mick guested at the 80th birthday of blues legend BB King at his blues bar in New York. He has also played alongside other guitar heroes such as Gary Moore and Snowy White.
In 2010 Mick released his long awaited debut solo album ‘Hard Road’ on the Mad Ears Productions label. The album received support from Paul Jones (BBC Radio 2), and was play listed on the U.S. Blues Radio Network. One of the tracks from the album, ‘Sometimes I Get So Lonely’, was nominated for best original song at the 2011 British Blues Awards (The Kevin Thorpe Memorial Award).

Unable to sleep without a radio under her pillow as a child she was destined to be part of the music. She has spent her entire life evolving in music and art. From '50s show bands to her own creations, Creole Cookin' and the Hot Stuff Band. She performed many Mardi Gras functions, Bourbon Street and the World's Fair sharing the stage with the likes of Pete Fountain, Irma Thomas, Jean Knight, Dr. John, Miami Sound Machine, Smokey Robinson and the list goes on. Tomato transplanted to Las Vegas where she spent three years performing at the Flamingo Hilton. To her credit three tours to the United Kingdom, nternational recording artist with performances at Ronnie Scott's London and live recording on BBC. Her powerful voice and boundless energy can transport you, along with her, back in time with heart-felt ballads to pure old school funk. She is also currently residing in Pensacola Florida and working on her art portfolio along with plans for future art shows. Somehow she managed to raise three wonderfully talented children and is currently working on her masters degree, while still performing regularly on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Wailin Walker's successful climb to the top of the Blues Charts around the world with the "The Devil Made Me Play It" (Double Trouble), "Buzzsaw Boogie" (Peerless), and "Crazy at Night" (Peerless) has proven that Wailin Walker's infectious rockin' blues tunes are here to stay.

When Wailin Al Walker decided to release a new album, drummer Marko Ibarra and Wailin' Al had just backed Canadian rock legend Jerry Doucette at the former and infamous Mushroom Studios in Vancouver. The studio that catapulted Doucette's and Heart's career was holding the final recording session before the property would be demolished for redevelopment. Inspired by the session, and armed with a list of songs that were written at the most feverish pace in over 40 years as a musician, Wailin' Al decided to record "No Regrets". In fact, Wailin' Al wrote and recorded so many songs for the album that some will be on "No Regrets Vol 2". In the meantime, Wailin Al says "This album has no rules. It can't be labeled as one style. The songs might be rock, blues, nostalgic, original, diverse or even perverse. I have NO REGRETS". Rather than writing songs for a particular genre of music, he has written songs that just came to him and then put them into an album. With a dedicated fan base, and news about the release hitting the streets, the number of pre-release requests for the album continues to grow.

A mixture of rock and blues, in a range of tempos, "No Regrets" solidly represents the style of music that Wailin Walker is known for as well as some deviations from the obvious. The "wailing" guitar solo in the original fast rocker "Lookin' Good" is the kind of high energy playing that has branded "Wailin' Walker". A deviation from that brand is the overtly political "Stop Talkin", which basically tells politicians to keep their mouths shut and features Jerry Doucette. The fast blues shuffle "Drink Muddy Water" demonstrates that Wailin' Al has fast rock and jump blues fingers. Another fast blues shuffle "What Kind of Woman" keeps the party going while "Just Like Gold", winds things down for a bit and cinches deep emotions. The rock original "In Your Dreams" is a personal favourite of Wailin Al's as it was the most challenging and rewarding song on the album to write because it's different from any other rock songs he's recorded.

All in all, the 13 songs on Wailin' Walker's "No Regrets" album are a refreshing blend of versatility from a veteran musician that still wants to prove himself.

This band plays hot blues and standards for the restaurant and winery circuit. Also available for private events, they play music from Sinatra thru’ J.J.Cale, to rock and roll. Consisting of veteran players Rett Wills guitar, Gene Latimer drums and Mike “Ace” Acerra on upright bass, they play quietly but with explosive energy, allowing them to entertain at events where low volume is a must, but excitement rules.

Originally from Toronto, Rett Wills moved to southeastern Ontario 30 years ago. Rett began learning guitar by listening to blues artists Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. J.J.Cale and Chet Atkins were a big influence on his style as well.
He helped form the “Shotgun Blues Band” as well as “The Renegades” and “Thunder Road”. For the past 15 years he worked with the killer trio “Campbell Latimer Wills”
Rett also plays solo, from Cobourg to Kingston with styles that that range from finger-picked standards and ragtime, through to blues and rock and roll on acoustic and electric guitar.

Gene Latimer, drummer, began playing at the age of twelve, and was on stage at fifteen. He was a founding member of “The Kingbees”, a band that enjoyed a top-ten hit on the “Canadian Countdown” radio charts. Gene toured North America with the “Randy Stewart Show”, then settled in southeastern Ontario forming bands such as “Brandy” and “The Shotgun Blues Band”. His flamboyant style is a show on its own, incorporating Latin, blues, jazz and rock and roll. With Northern Voodoo he brings all those elements together using jazz brush techniques.

An essential part of the “Voodoo” sound is the upright acoustic bass played by veteran Mike “Ace” Acerra. Mike’s first initiation to music was piano. He took up guitar and bass in his teens and went on to play blues and rhythm and blues. His first professional job was with “The Mission Revue”, an R and B show band out of Toronto. He was also a founding member of “The Soul Setters”, a staple of the Toronto entertainment scene. Mike graduated to upright bass and has brought a love of acoustic jazzy blues, ala Willie Dixon, to Northern Voodoo, making it, along with Rett and Gene, into a trio that plays a unique blend of classic standards and hot blues.
