Debuting in 1991 with the LP Kings of Gangster Bop, the group was almost the first to catch the wave of swing-era nostalgia that crested during the latter half of the decade; with 1995's Mugzy's Move, Royal Crown Revue made their major label debut, signing to Warner Brothers.

Walk On Fire, which appeared in 1999, featured the Revue's tightest presentation with vintage instruments including original "44" ribbon microphones. Tours of Japan and Australia were successful and the Royal Crown Revue celebrated by issuing the live effort Passport: Live In Australia in 2001. /Biography by Jason Ankeny, AllMusic

Royal Crown Revue - El Toro

Size: 49,4 MB
Time: 21:20
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2007
Styles: Swing, jump blues
Art: Front, back

1. El Toro (4:35)
2. Won't You Ride With Me (2:47)
3. Solitary Man (3:43)
4. Brazil (2:53)
5. It's A Good Day (2:50)
6. Rockville (4:29)

Royal Crown Revue's new EP, entitled El Toro, is being released to coincide with the bands 2007 European Tour, which will last six weeks (April 11 May 19, 2007) and cover 12 countries. It s RCR's first release since 2004's Greetings From Hollywood. The disc includes two brand new RCR originals (El Toro and Won't You Ride With Me), plus a slamming cover of Neil Diamond's 1966 classic Solitary Man. Like RCR's previous albums, El Toro runs the gamut stylistically.

The explosive title track - which looks at a bullfight through the frightened eyes of a creature about to meet its maker - combines elements of punk, surf, jazz and mariachi. Rockville is a rough and tumble instrumental in the tradition of Hammond B3 pioneer Wild Bill Davis. It s A Good Day shows off the band s stellar jazz chops, while Brazil is a prime example of the Louis Prima inflected swing that has become RCR s signature. Won't You Ride With Me closes out the disc, sliding over the listener like a late night cruise up the coastline. /Amazon

Royal Crown Revue - Walk On Fire

Size: 94,0 MB
Time: 40:34
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1999
Styles: Swing, jump blues
Art: Front, back

1. She Walks On Fire (2:39)
2. Watts Local (3:36)
3. Trapped (In The Web Of Love) (3:17)
4. Watcha Doin' Tonight (Sam's Calling) (2:27)
5. Besame Mija (Baille Para Qui) (3:11)
6. The Stranger (3:41)
7. Hey Sonny (Where'd You Go) (3:31)
8. A Bronx Hello (2:44)
9. Beware (2:22)
10. One Eyed Cat (4:00)
11. Take A Long Drink For Me (5:36)
12. Mr. Meschugge (3:23)

As the roster of swing revival bands increased with the popularity of the movement, Royal Crown Revue remained a pioneer of the style and sound. Drawing from roots as diverse as jazz, punk, and street-corner doo-wop, this band was making the scene in all its '40s-Americana glory when hair and grunge bands were center-stage in the late '80s. Walk On Fire, the group's fifth release, is a continuation of Royal Crown Revue's winning formula.

"Besame Mija" has flashy, Latin-spiced horns and dreamy surfer guitar that act as a perfect sonic palette for the Sinatra-styled crooning of vocalist Eddie Nichols. Royal Crown Revue has an infectious knack for writing swing music without it sounding forced or stale. The group's use of vintage musical instruments and microphones for recording Walk On Fire has created a sound that is as classy as it is authentic. "Hey Sonny (Where'd You Go?)" and "She Walks on Fire" wouldn't sound the least bit out of character if they had been performed by the likes of Glenn Miller or Duke Ellington. With Walk On Fire, these L.A. hipsters walk the walk and talk the talk. /AllMusic

Royal Crown Revue - The Contender

Size: 100,1 MB
Time: 43:21
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1993
Styles: Swing, jump blues
Art: Front, back

1. The Contender (3:24)
2. Walkin' Like Brando (3:55)
3. Zip Gun Bop (Reloaded) (3:13)
4. Big Boss Lee (2:50)
5. Friday The 13th (4:19)
6. Stormy Weather (3:39)
7. Morning Light (2:56)
8. Salt Peanuts (2:47)
9. Work Baby Work (3:14)
10. Everyone Knows You're Crazy (4:13)
11. Port-Au-Prince (Travels With Betty Page) (5:11)
12. Deadly Nightcall (3:34)

The least smarmy of the bevy of neo-swing albums that were released during the same period (including admirable-selling sets by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies), Royal Crown Revue's fourth album is also their most traditional offering in the genre. And because they are somewhat veterans of the scene (they formed in 1989, at least a good five years before neo-swing bands began replacing ska groups as Southern California's latest musical offering to fad-seeking kids), Royal Crown Revue play it a bit more straight and with more dash than most of their neo-swing contemporaries.

Still, there's a slight hipper-than-thou vibe splattered throughout The Contender, one that still self-importantly winks at its audience as it heavy-handedly plows through music 50-years-old. Choice cuts: "Walkin' Like Brando," "Zip Gun Bop (Reloaded)" and the zesty title track. /Michael Gallucci, AllMusic

Royal Crown Revue - Mugzy's Move

Size: 117,3 MB
Time: 50:29
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1996
Styles: Jump blues, swing
Art: Front, tray

1. Hey Pachuco! (3:34)
2. Zip Gun Bop (3:28)
3. Mugzy's Move (3:48)
4. I Love The Life I Live (3:38)
5. The Walkin' Blues (5:31)
6. Beyond The Sea (3:49)
7. Park's Place (2:47)
8. Datin' With No Dough (2:46)
9. Trouble In Tinsel Town (4:47)
10. Topsy (3:42)
11. The Rise And Fall Of The Great Mondello (3:55)
12. Honey Child (2:46)
13. Hey Pachuco! (Reprise) (2:53)
14. Barflies At The Beach (3:01)

Mugzy's Move is the second release from noted swingsters Royal Crown Revue. The album features some prime examples of this seven-piece ensemble's own brand of gangster-culture-laced-swing. There's the finger-snapping, bullet-flying groove of "Zip Gun Bop," complete with singer Eddie Nichols' between-verse, Joe-Pesci-like vocal chiding. Sinatraesque numbers like "Beyond the Sea" show the band's knack for catchy orchestration. They also provide opportunities for Nichols to show himself off as a serious crooner.

Most of the songs on Mugzy's Move are arranged to allow these very talented instrumentalists to strut their individual chops at any turn. When the ensemble turns up the tempo on "Park's Place," they maintain a seamless cohesion that's held down by the dance of Veikko Lepisto's fingers across the bass strings. Trumpeter Scott Steen gives a standout performance on the track. The band doesn't shy away from humor either. "Datin' with no Dough" explores the throes of being a "cat trying to court with no scratch." Fans of the neo-swing movement shouldn't miss Mugzy's Move.

Royal Crown Revue - Caught In The Act

Size: 126,3 MB
Time: 54:39
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1997
Styles: Jump blues, swing
Art: Full

1. Intro (0:47)

11. Datin' With No Dough (2:28)
12. Hot Rod (8:31)
13. Poppity Pop Goes The Motorcycle (6:59)

The Royal Crown Revue is one hot little band. Here the sextet roars through a set of originals and jump swing standards in a live performance. The band is all swagger and attitude. But while the vocals can tend toward a sing-song sameness of spoken-word rapping, the horns and rhythm section constantly rev things up. On tracks like "Park's Place" and "The Mooch," the band really cuts loose, especially the horns. Other highlights include "Barflies at the Beach" and the band's signature tune, "Hey Pachuco!" which the group performed in the film The Mask. Not as solid as the band's major-label debut, but enjoyable. /Ross Boissoneau, AllMusic
