"Wrong Kind Of Love" was produced by Rae Gordon Band guitarist Kivett Bednar, and engineered and mixed by Jimi Bott at his studio Roseleaf Recording. (While the BMA-winning Jimi Bott is one of the blues world’s most revered drummers, he’s also a technically adept and remarkably intuitive recording engineer; among many other albums Jimi has recorded, Ben Rice’s “Wish The World Away” was nominated for a Blues Music Award.)

Six of the songs on “Wrong Kind Of Love" were written by Pat McDougall, keyboardist and musical director for the Rae Gordon Band, three were co-written by Rae and Pat, and one was written by Portland-based guitarist and songwriter Rod Furlott. The CD covers a wide gamut of styles, from lowdown barroom blues to dance-worthy funk, from heart-tugging soul ballad to slide-drenched rage rocker, from minor-key blues angst to uplifting soul anthem. The recording features the regular members of the 7-piece Rae Gordon Band: Rae on lead vocals, Kivett Bednar on guitar & vocals, Pat McDougall on keyboards & vocals, Ed Pierce on drums, Joseph Conrad on bass, Allan Kalik on trumpet & horn arrangements, and Scott Franklin on saxophone. We were fortunate enough to have Jimi Bott contribute supplemental percussion as well.

The band had just one night to nail it - which made this recording a crazy, but thrilling, high wire act! Johnny drew from the great Bay Area blues talent pool that lured him to the West Coast back in 2016. Blues legend Charlie Musselwhite's driving boogie-woogie harp on California Blues is an absolute highlight. You could feel a jolt of electricity run through the crowd when Portland, Oregon-based Rae Gordon took the stage. The Rae Gordon Band brings together award winning and nominated musicians and is fronted by the 2014 Muddy Award Winner for Best Female Vocalist (Cascade Blues Association). They have played the big and little stages of northwest’s favorite clubs, dance floors and festivals helping to mold their signature sound that spans from a danceable get up and groove to a haunting slide tone that will make you want to find a back porch and sit a spell. Rae enjoys playing intimate venues where she can connect one on one with people in the audience to large festivals where she can connect with a whole community.

Their much awaited recent CD release of original tunes, which was produced and co-written with RGB guitar player Gaddis Cavenah called “Blue Lemonade” debuted in 2013 to a sold out venue and rave reviews. It highlights Gordon’s extensive range and ability to move effortlessly from soul to blues infused gospel. In July of 2013, it hit the Billboard Charts for Blues at number 10 and held that spot for 2 weeks. The CD was recently nominated as Best NW Recording by the Cascade Blues Association and is being sent as a contender for the best self produced recording by the Blues Association.

“They have struck pay dirt in bringing out the beauty of Rae’s vocal abilities”…“Listening to the disc leaves no question on why she is a perennial nominee for female vocalist in the Cascade Blues Association’s Muddy Awards” “Blue Lemonade is a deeply accomplished work with superb original songwriting that stands up to the best releases of recent years anywhere”…Greg Johnson, President of the Cascade Blues Association.

It is currently getting airplay in Portland Radio markets including KINK FM, KMHD, Eugene, Kansas City, back east and has recently crossed the pond to the radio listeners of England.

In summer of 2013, RGB opened for Lydia Pense and Cold Blood and was a band semi finalist in the 2015 International Blues Challenge in the renowned contest held every year on Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee.

Rae Gordon Band performances are not only a show, but a celebration, as Gordon follows the policy that a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met…yet.

“Add equal parts of Janis Joplin’s pain, Aretha Franklin’s soul and Grace Slick’s power; mix them thoroughly, and add a big gob of gooey molasses and you have Rae Gordon’s voice” … – Positively Entertainment and Dining
