Timo Gross is back. “Black Dawg Bone” is his first album after an eight-year break. When he decided to take a break in 2016 after his award-winning album “Heavy Soul” and a long tour, he had no idea how long it would last. On “Black Dawg Bone” Timo Gross reaches a new peak in his creative work.

His songwriting has continuously developed, and through the album's multifaceted production he manages to transport the songs into different sound worlds that immerse the listener in different scenarios. Many of the songs on the album reflect the big themes of life: love, death, fear and hope.

The well-known German blues musician Timo Gross , often discussed in Blues Magazine , has forged the plan together with Adax Dörsam to release an album of songs by Leadbelly as a tribute. Although Leadbelly has been dead for over seventy years, his writings from the 1920s about the black population are still very topical today. On the CD there is a wonderful mix of the angular guitar playing and the smoky voice of Timo with the guitar sounds of Adax. Various special instruments such as saz, charango are used. To give it their own contemporary sound, they even mix ethno, electro through it, but it remains blues.

The CD opens with a narration about Leadbelly 'Prologue Leadbelly'. The actual album starts with the second song Black Betty. This version is very original with a fine groove and use of the classic Turkish Saz and Coral Sitar guitar. The well-known Cottonfields gets the same uptempo rhythm. It sounds old-school yet modern. Nice acoustic guitar playing and steel guitar give it a country atmosphere. Where Did You Sleep is a quiet slow blues, sung intensely and the sitar fits perfectly. Dobro intro features Take This Hammer and the chorus sung indicates the hammer blows of the railway workers. Great track. Techno rhythm dominates Western Plain and together with the distorting voice it gives the song a distinct but well-crafted look. Lots of sounds make it very special.The groovy and rocky It'll Blow A Poor Man Down sounds good and turns into the quiet melancholic Blow My Blues Away. The sad John Hardy is sung solo and only played with dobro. Then comes another well-known song, Midnight Special, best known from Creedence Clearwater Revival. The country blues The Gallis Pole is nice and fast and groovy away. My Baby Left Me starts with electric guitar intro. A sad love song and music and singing radiate that. The penultimate song Good Night Irene is a subdued love song. Surprisingly, the album ends with Epilogue: Western Plain (Ethno Mix). A mix of old-school blues with modern contemporary sounds.Then comes another well-known song, Midnight Special, best known from Creedence Clearwater Revival. Conclusion : A blues album in which Leadbelly is honored in a dignified way. The dark, sad mood of the lyrics is appropriately cast in old blues lines and contemporary rhythms. A masterfully made album.

This may be an authentic-sounding blues CD but it has emerged in a most unusual way courtesy of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting social distancing and lockdown of normal activities, including live music and recording. As a result German-based British harmonica player Roger C. Wade got these tracks together with artists from eight countries sending their contributions via the internet. In fact some of the musicians had never actually met the people they are playing with! Roger first contacted other German blues players like guitarist Kai Strauss and saxophonist Tommy Schneller but then also added artists from the UK, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Finland and France. He then followed this by getting contributions from several top American players including Larry Garner, Fred Kaplan, Nathan James, Aki Kumar and Big Daddy Wilson.

There is a great variety of styles here from the jump blues of the opener 'Lockdown Blues' - "Strange times we live in, just keep keeping to yourself" to the Chicago band blues of 'Can't Get Too Close' and 'Personal Shutdown' which also both tell lockdown stories - "I've got to love my baby from six feet away..." Abi Wallenstein & Roger Wade do a nice acoustic cover of Son House's very appropriate 'Death Letter Blues' and there is more nice acoustic blues from Little Victor and Kai Strauss, with Black Patti and US harp star Joe Filisko closing the first CD with the low down and dirty 'Be Ready When He Comes'. CD2 starts with a bang with Larry Garner and company, Tommy Schneller blows a nice bluesy instrumental and Christian Bleiming plays beautiful boogie boogie piano. Big Daddy Wilson contributes some soulful gospel, as does the wonderful Veronica Sbergia on 'I Can Tell The World'. And the quality carries on right to the last tracks courtesy of Aki Kumar and Nathan James and especially Jens Turowski whose closing track 'Give Me My Heart Back' is one of the collections' many highlights. Roger deserves much praise for getting this collection of tracks together it is completely successful and I hope that it makes lots of money for the musicians involved. ~G.E. Harrison

Wenn Fans handgemachter Musik in Album-Credits auf Begriffe wie „Electronics“, „Loops“ oder „Programming“ stoßen, kann das schon einmal spontane und nicht unbedingt unbegründete Abwehrreflexe auslösen. Im vorliegenden Fall sollte sich allerdings niemand davon abschrecken lassen, dass sich besagte Termini neben den von Timo Gross überwiegend selbst eingespielten Instrumenten klassischer Provenienz auch im Booklet zu seiner neuen CD finden. Denn diese klingt trotz gelegentlichem – und absolut stimmig dosiertem – Einsatz solcher Studiogimmicks mitnichten auch nur ansatzweise artifiziell, sondern genauso erdig und lebendig, wie man es von früheren Gross-Scheiben her gewohnt ist. Zugute kommt dem Album dabei vor allem, dass der Mann von der Weinstraße hier einmal mehr eindrücklich unter Beweis zu stellen vermag, dass er nicht nur über eine der besten Blues-Stimmen hierzulande verfügt, sondern sich sein ebenso versiertes wie geschmackvolles Gitarrenspiel gerade auch dadurch auszeichnet, dass er genau weiß, wann weniger einfach mehr ist. Gepaart mit seinem kreativen Songwriting im Spannungsfeld von Blues(-Rock) und Americana sind dies drei Faktoren, die „Heavy Soul“ zu einem kleinen Meisterwerk machen, sodass der Name von Gross’ neuem, in Eigenregie betriebenem Label durchaus zugleich als Qualitätsbezeichnung für sein neues Album gelesen werden darf.

2005 entschloss sich Timo Gross nach 25 Jahren im Musikgeschäft, seine Arbeit für Stars und Sternchen wie Chris Norman oder Kathy Kelly einzustellen und sich fortan seiner Solokarriere zu widmen. Das erfordert die Entschlossenheit, die Timo Gross auszeichnet und sich durch sein Schaffen zieht. Mit seinem enormen kreativen Output veröffentlichte er seitdem sieben Soloalben und drei Kollaborationen als „The Vineyard Sessions“ mit Richie Arndt, Gregor Hilden sowie Alex Conti und etablierte sich damit in der deutschen Bluesszene. Daneben machte er sich einen Namen als Produzent für neue Acts wie Johnny Rieger und Marius Tilly.

Längst hat sich der Gitarrist und Sänger den Ruf erspielt, mit den internationalen Bluesgrößen ohne Weiteres mithalten zu können – nicht umsonst waren bereits drei seiner Alben für den Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik nominiert, bis er den Preis 2012 dann für „Fallen from Grace“ erhielt. Im gleichen Jahr war Gross auch für vier German Blues Awards nominiert. Seitdem erhielt er noch drei weitere Nominierungen. Jetzt geht Gross noch einen Schritt weiter und veröffentlicht sein achtes Soloalbum „Heavy Soul“ erstmalig bei seinem eigenen Label „Grand Cru Records“. Als Vertriebspartner konnte sein altes Label „In-akustik“ gewonnen werden. Neben der Produktion zeichnet sich Gross diesmal auch für das komplette Artwork verantwortlich. Verwurzelt im Blues und doch hoch modern, beweist er einmal wieder, dass er ein extrem zeitgemäßer und vielseitiger Gitarrist mit eigenem Sound und eigenem Ton ist. Alle seine Songs und die Produktionen tragen seine Handschrift. Egal, ob er eine Strat, eine Les Paul oder eine Firebird spielt, sein Ton dringt immer durch, ist immer eigen und immer individuell.
