After releasing his debut demo EP, “Fool Me Once”, Tom Euler spent the following years performing and growing as an artist. Whether performing across the US or opening for such names as Delbert McCinton and Patti LaBelle, Euler captured his experiences in his songs while also capturing his audiences with his guitar playing.
As Euler’s songbook grew, he began seeking the experience and expertise of some of the best musicians coastal Virginia has to offer. He formed a band with Bass Player, Von Jose’ Roberts, Drummer, Michael Behlmar, and Keyboardist, Lucy Lawrence Kilpatrick. Together, they excitedly began arranging the music for the album and also to perform for what coalesced to be a successful semi- finalist run at the International Blues Challenge in 2018. With the music written, arranged, and field tested, the band entered the studio and recorded the ten tracks on this newest release, “Blues Got My Back”.
The energy and enthusiasm of the band is felt right from the beginning with the catchy title track, “Blues Got My Back”, a modern take on a classic, uptempo shuffle. It is followed by the passionate ballad, “Played Your Part”, that builds slowly with its thoughtful lyrics and heartbreaking guitar lead that leaves the listener longing for a repeat. Halfway through, we get a driving blues song, “Broken Soul”, where Euler talks about how his soul isn’t old, but rather broken. Immediately following, is a Ray Charles influenced gospel blues tune, “Forgive Me”. A heartfelt plea for forgiveness never felt so relatable nor moving, with a beautiful highlight of piano and vocals.
Overall, “Blues Got My Back” contains songs that show the versatility of Euler’s songwriting and the variety of his influences as well as the talent and execution from the band as a whole, leaving the listener with an album sure to be a favorite among blues lovers and music lovers alike.
