Buy this CD! I could just leave it at that and you would realize that my suggestion was 100% correct. I will attempt to give an accurate description of this masterful creation of an amalgamation of southern soul and rhythm & blues, blues, funk, rhumba rhythms and a bit of Texas swing. What started out as a studio project created by band leader, executive producer and lead guitarist Mark Domizio has evolved into a touring band with one substituted band member. Mark has been a “first-call” guitarist for many years based in New Orleans. The New Orleans based band also features local soul-singing legend C.P. Love’s seasoned voice on five tracks. The also excellent Rick Lawson provides smoother soul vocals on four tunes. Journeyman keyboard ace Johnny Neel who has played with The Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule and Dickey Betts among others supplies his trademark funky organ along with piano. Drum chores are split between Daryl Burgess and Allyn Robinson. David Hyde is the bassman, although Dr. John’s longtime bassist David Barard is in the touring band. Rick Lawson also isn’t in the touring band. To top all of this off is a classic soul-rhythm & blues horn section consisting of Jon Smith, Ward Smith and Barney Floyd. C.P. Love displays why he is considered a soul legend in New Orleans with a great version of Albert King’s classic “Breaking Up Somebody’s Home”. The entire band shines here as the horns punch the groove, Johnny Neel’s organ funks it up and Mark Domizio rips through with some smokin’ guitar licks. The soul, funk and rhythm & blues assault continues on the title track. Not quite sure what it is about, but dang it sure sounds good! Mark contributes just the right notes on guitar. Rick Lawson introduces his “smooth-as-silk” pipes to the slow-grooving blues of “Leave Your Love Alone” that also showcases cool organ, note perfect guitar and some sexy sax from Jon Smith. Rick next works his magic on the Albert King-inspired slow blues of “Blues” where Mark delivers some nice guitar note bending ala Mr. King. Their instrumental tribute to Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown on “Gate” is worth the price of admission for my money. Somebody has finally seen fit to emulate the Texas Swing master with such careful attention to detail on this Domizio-penned gem. He captures Gatemouth’s guitar style right down to his patented quick finger-slides. The horn section punctuates the tune as well as featuring brief solos. If you didn’t know any better you would swear this was a song from the master himself. It doesn’t get any better than this. C.P. Love returns with his nicely-aged voice accompanied by Calypso rhythms, organ, electric piano and beautifully played slide guitar on “What I Can Do”. He brings another great vocal to the first of two Luther Allison songs on “What’s Going On In My Home”. Organ and some neat “wah-wah” keyboard add to the funk-fest. The second has a gospel-churchy vibe largely supplied by the organ. It’s a slow and gorgeous blues burner. Rick Lawson handles the two final vocal tracks. The funky “Shake N Bake” is full of enough snaky rhythms and sexual innuendo to get any house party a rockin’. These masters of replicating a style do it again on the Bobby “Blue” Bland inspired slow-blues of “Outside Love”. Eloquent slide guitar puts the icing on this cake. The closing original instrumental “Tater” gives all the members a chance to step out and shine. A fitting reminder of all the musical goodness that preceded. Man is the one-man sax section of Jon Smith right on the money as usual. I could just go on gushing forever about this music. Don’t take my word for it. Go out and make a believer out of yourself. Well crafted and performed music presented with such knowledge, talent and a true love of the genres can’t be faked. Do the music world a favor and make this record a hit. Tell em’ “Bluesdog” sent ya. If this one doesn’t receive its due recognition something is definitely wrong in the grand scheme of things.

Alex Gannon developed an extreme passion for music at a young age. Inspired by the music of his father, Scott Gannon, Alex picked up the guitar and began playing at every opportunity. After graduating from high school Alex enrolled in the small, private institution of Young Harris College. There, he learned the art of classical guitar under the instruction of Dr. Richard Knepp and ultimately earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Once his undergraduate studies were completed, Alex took some time off from school and became a full-time guitar instructor. Eager to delve deeper into the ever-astounding world of music, he decided it was time to return to school in order to begin his graduate classical guitar studies. Alex moved to Atlanta and enrolled in Georgia State University where he was a student of Dr. Luther Enloe. There he earned his Master's Degree in music performance. While at GSU he attended and participated in many masterclasses with notable classical players such as Matt Palmer, Christopher Berg and several others. Always eager to take on a new musical challenge, Alex performs as a soloist as well as with fellow artists in different settings such as weddings, private events and other venues. In addition to gigging, he is also an active private music teacher in the Atlanta area. Alex currently teaches guitar at Georgia State University's Perimeter campus as well as the Galloway School. Throughout the years he has developed and expanded his sound through the eclectic influences of colleagues and musicians worldwide. He has played in many bands, combos and ensembles covering genres such as classical, jazz, rock, blues and more. Alex actively plays with Atlanta rock band The Ides of June as well as with his project Sidewalkers and can be heard at venues throughout Atlanta and the Southeast.

Crystal Shawanda grew up on the Wikwemikong reserve on an island in Ontario, Canada, Her parents raised her on Country music, but it was her oldest brother who introduced her to the blues. He would hang out in the basement cranking Muddy Waters, B.B. King and Etta James, and Crystal would sit at the top of the stairs, straining to hear those soulful sounds. She learned early on, by observing her family, that music was like cheap therapy. That’s what the blues is all about: releasing and healing. While she was secretly pining to be a blues mama, out on stage it was Patsy and Loretta. She started performing country at six and started getting paid gigs at 10, relentlessly playing every stage she could. Crystal and her dad started taking frequent trips to Nashville when she was 12. She recorded her first album when she was 13 and moved away from home that same year to attend music school. Crystal got restless however, and dropped out at 16 to move to Nashville. She didn’t know anyone but was determined, so she spent days playing where she could and busking in between. During a chance meeting with a well-respected music executive, Crystal was told, “I just don’t know if Native Americans make sense in country music. I don’t know if fans would be receptive and I wouldn’t even know how to market you.” Crystal tried to take the critique with composure, but would end up moving back home to her reserve and abandoning her dream. Shawanda set out on a dark, self-destructive path, but no matter what, always found herself back in front of the microphone. She finally came to terms with what was bothering her. “If I was out of tune, I could take voice lessons,” she reflects. “If my song was bad, I could write another. But I couldn’t change the colour of my skin.” So Shawanda moved back to Nashville one more time with a mission to prove him wrong. She paid her dues, playing at Tootsies Orchid Lounge six days a week, and managed to build up a buzz and land a production deal with Scott Hendricks. She was later signed to a record deal with RCA Records by Joe Galante, who had heard Crystal cover B.B. King and Janis Joplin. This venture produced a top 20 song on country radio and the highest selling album by a Native American in BDS history. After this, she found herself feeling like a fish out of water. She says, “I so wanted to be what everyone wanted me to be, I lost myself along the way.” So Crystal took some time off and, one day while watching the news and feeling overwhelmed by the headlines, she walked into her music room, picked up her guitar and wrote “The Whole World’s Got the Blues.” This was the start of her first blues album. “The songs just fell out of me and throughout the recording it was like setting my voice free,” she says. “I can’t help but feel like I’m home, no longer holding back.” Crystal’s latest album is a modern take on the blues, but is deeply rooted with heart-wrenching laments and catchy rump-shakers. It’s where the north meets the south and captures the resilience of the human spirit – much like the way Crystal does. Dallas-based guitarist Anson Funderburgh took his band the Rockets out of the clubs and onto festival stages in the early 2000s with his critically acclaimed recordings for the Black Top label out of New Orleans. With Jackson, Mississippi native Sam Myers delivering the vocals and harmonica treatments, this band mixes up a powerful gumbo of Texas jump blues and Delta blues that can't be found anywhere else. Funderburgh & His Rockets are a particularly hard-working band, performing across the U.S. and Europe nearly 300 nights a year.

Funderburgh was born November 15, 1954 and got hooked on the blues when he got his first guitar at age seven or eight. His first musical experiences came in clubs in Dallas. He developed his team approach to blues music while learning from the likes of Freddie King, Jimmy Reed, and Albert Collins when these great bluesmen were passing through the area, but Funderburgh had already taught himself guitar mostly from listening to classic blues records. He never had the chance to see Muddy Waters, but he did get to play with Lightnin' Hopkins in the late '70s. Funderburgh formed the Rockets in 1978 but didn't meet Sam Myers until 1982.

Funderburgh recorded with the Fabulous Thunderbirds on their Butt Rockin' album and went solo in 1981, when the New Orleans-based Black Top label released Talk to You by Hand, the label's first release. Funderburgh added Myers on harmonica and lead vocals in 1986. Myers had traveled for years on the chitlin circuit, where he had the chance to accompany people like Elmore James and Robert Junior Lockwood.

Funderburgh admits that adding Myers on vocals and harmonica was a turning point for the Rockets, partly because of the image they project from the stage, a big towering Black man and three white guys backing him up. Funderburgh continued his association in the '90s, with Black Top releasing Tell Me What I Want to Hear (1991), Live at Grand Emporium (1995), and That's What They Want (1997). After releasing nine albums on Black Top, Funderburgh changed record labels in 1999 with the release of Change in My Pocket for Bullseye Blues. It would be easy to ignore anyone who suggested that Charles Caldwell’s life wasn’t an embodiment of the blues. He was born poor in the farmlands of Mississippi, held on to one guitar for 47 years, accepted alcohol instead of money for his performances, repeatedly fell into strange misadventures (probably due to his payment plan), and got a deal for a record he barely had time to finish before dying at the age of 60. We’ve got 11 tracks of this traditional blues player, then, collected (of course) by Fat Possum Records on the album Remember Me. Caldwell’s bio reads like The Blues Story, but he’s managed to turn out his own sound.

The album’s title track closes the disc, but not as a cancer-stricken man’s plea. Instead, Caldwell sounds demanding, angry, and a bit paranoid. He addresses the song to a woman from the past who said the narrator would be her man. Things have changed, though, and the singer has doubts about her sincerity. Each verse is the demand of an increasingly frustrated man: “Can you remember me?” Caldwell pulls the unsteadiness of the lyrics into the structure of the song. At first listen, the song seems to be a simple 12-bar pattern, but Caldwell’s actually shifted the chord changes. He also keeps the listener off-balance by changing the placement of the lyrics within each musical sequence. The song only has four lines, but Caldwell changes the points of repetition and the timing of the lines to bring out the uncertainty of the questioning man. It’s a very simple trick, but it’s very effective.

When Caldwell keeps his music de-centered, he creates a special tension because the music sounds so traditional in many ways. He claims he learned to play by following Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, but his sound probably owes more to John Lee Hooker. He builds his songs around steady rhythms — sometimes off the beat — and lets the hook build the song. He speak-sings his vocals in a voice that’s just a bit raspy, the voice of an older man who’s drunk a nip or two in his time. Often the tracks include only Caldwell’s voice and clean electric guitar playing, but when he is accompanied, it’s only by simple and steady drumming.

This solitary sound has an echo in several of Caldwell’s lyrics. “Alone for a Long Time” speaks of a person’s inability to live without anyone else, and Caldwell’s singing on his guitar’s rests are chilling: “Don’t the road look lonesome / When you’re all alone?” This cry is Caldwell at his most vulnerable, and he’s not content to stay there. Just two tracks later on “Down the Road of Love”, he decides he’s had enough loneliness. Knowing he has to travel the road of love, and unable or unwilling to do it alone, he states quite simply that “if you just can’t go with me / I guess I’m a have to take somebody else.” Caldwell sounds more bitter than desperate. If his listener won’t go, he’s ready to say good-bye. The man who was afraid of solitude a few tracks ago has hardened into a practical lover. The fear has changed into an insensitivity.

As strong as Remember Me is throughout, it’s the first track, “Hadn’t I Been Good to You”, that’s most likely to stick with you. Caldwell reveals his intensity on every note plucked or sung. The neurosis of the rest of the album comes out unhesitatingly, but it brings with it some context for the psychodrama. It’s not a new story — the undeserving lover who cheats then jilts — but it’s still a good one. The weight of the hurt, if not the tale, necessitates its re-telling, and Caldwell does it very well, especially in his use of the rhythmic “give me, loan me, let me live”. Often cited as Sydney’s ‘university of the blues’, the Foreday Riders celebrate 54 years as a working band in 2021, and despite countless line-up changes, 2 original members from 1967 remain: the King Brothers, Ron (harmonica, vocals) and Jeff (guitar, Dobro) who continue as happy ‘backroom boys’ in the current outfit. The rhythm section is also highly durable: Rosscoe ‘Stinger’ Clark (drums) has been a Rider since 1982, and as a master shuffle player, has worked with the Cyril B Bunter band, Ray Beadle, Bridie King, Darren Jack and Alison Penney among others – he’s decidedly the go-to guy for blues drumming in Sydney; Stan ‘Sleepy’ Mobbs has been on bass with the Riders since 1990 and underpins the band with the smooth, swinging yet rock-solid feel essential to electric blues.

Like Rosscoe, Stan is also much in demand by other Sydney bands, and has worked with master guitarist Mal Eastick and other notables such as Ray Beadle, Bridie King and Christina Crofts. The Riders are currently privileged to have in the crucial role of front man the highly regarded singer/guitarist Shane Pacey, widely known for his work with the Bondi Cigars, and who also leads his own blues trio. Shane’s association with the Riders goes back to the late 1980s, and he has stayed in touch ever since; his intense vocals, attacking guitar style and strong song-writing make him an asset to any band, and his presence has honed the edge on the Riders’ sound.

What began in the mid-60’s as a loose association of school friends dabbling in electric blues developed over a year or so into a 7-piece band featuring young singer Jill Drury and Swiss piano man Rolli Utzinger. Material ranged from the country blues of Memphis Minnie & Lightning Hopkins through to urban R & B by Willie Dixon and Ray Charles, incorporating jazz-flavoured instrumentals and jump tunes. Since then, after a brief stint as a quartet in the early 70s, the band has settled for a 5-piece line up such as the current one, often augmented at Riders gigs by guests dropping in on guitar, sax, harp, keyboards - whatever you can use for the blues. Only venturing sporadically into the recording studios, the Riders have released 10 albums, the latest being ‘Herding Cats’, launched 2016 and featuring the current line-up plus four guest performers. Over the past few years the Riders have re-issued on CD the 4 long unavailable albums from 1974–1986 (‘Days of Wine and Vinyl’ series).

Highlights in the band’s history include: support acts with B.B.King; Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee; Freddie King and Hound Dog Taylor, Gatemouth Brown, the ‘Delta Blues Legends’ show, Chris Cain and others. The Riders have backed Bo Diddley in Sydney, and were joined on stage by Junior Wells during his 1972 tour. In 1975 the Riders were part of the ‘History of the Blues’ concert tour which included Dutch Tilders, Judy Bailey and Margaret Roadknight. Other names associated with the band are Jeannie Lewis and Broderick Smith, and former Riders have branched out into major local blues acts such as the Bondi Cigars, The Hippos, and the Ray Beadle Band.

Apart from appearing at Sunbury in 1975, the Riders played at the now legendary Alice Springs Blues Festival in 1986, along with Chain, Renee Geyer, Kevin Borich, Ian Moss and others. More recent festival appearances include the East Coast Blues Festival at Byron Bay, the Lithgow, Goulburn and Thredbo Blues Festivals, and the Wangaratta, Manly and Hawksbury Jazz Festivals.

In 1996 the Riders were awarded the inaugural Hall of Fame Award at the Lithgow Blues Festival and in following years received the Chain Heritage award at Goulburn (and were later inducted into the Hall of Fame), the 2MBS-FM Stormy Monday Lifetime Achievement award, Sydney Blues Society ‘Services to the Blues’ Award, and the Wollongong Blues Club Hall of Fame, 2015. The Riders were also included in a series of blues concerts at the Sydney Opera House in 1999, ‘Sundays round the House’, with Mal Eastick, The Mighty Reapers and Matt Walker. Throughout the band’s history, the King Brothers have been privileged to work with an imposing array of leading Australian blues performers, and hope to continue doing so, always aiming to see audiences have as good a time as the band.

Guy Davis has been telling stories for a long time. In the 1980s he followed in the footsteps of his illustrious parents, actors Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, appearing in movies and on TV. But for the last three decades, his focus has been music, on record and on stage, sometimes in original one-man shows. Drawing on his gifts for both theater and song, The Legend of Sugarbelly derives in part from the stage production The Legend of Sugarbelly and Other Tales My Father Told Me, in the process refreshing timeless country blues traditions.

Listening to Davis is a visceral experience — you can practically feel the heat pulsing from his earthy music. Blessed with a gentle growl of a voice, his sly rasp can be lascivious one moment and tender the next. The murder ballad “Sugarbelly” details the tragedy of a Texas prostitute who was killed by a jealous lover, but it doesn’t end with her earthly demise, recounting how a determined angel frees the woman from Satan’s grasp, transporting her to Heaven. Over the course of this six-minute epic, Davis’ understated crooning encompasses lust, sadness, and hard-earned joy, turning fantasy into a compelling saga. He brings the same emotional vitality to every song, from the hymn-like “Early in the Morning,” a calm contemplation of death, to the rowdy “Come Gitchu Some,” celebrating the risky pleasures of moonshine, to the wistful “Don’t Know Where I’m Bound.”

Wielding acoustic guitar, banjo, and harmonica with masterful command, Davis disproves the notion that performing country blues is a simple affair. While his restrained playing is marked by rare delicacy, a boundless spirit infuses these songs, which offer diverse delights throughout. For starters, note the delicious 12-string guitar on Blind Lemon Jefferson’s “Black Snake Moan,” or Davis’ entrancing clawhammer banjo on “Firefly,” or the gorgeous, saxophone-like harmonica of “Who’s Gonna Love You Tonight (That’s Alright).” Old-fashioned but fresh, familiar but fascinating, Guy Davis’ The Legend of Sugarbelly shows how a charismatic artist can cast a spell that’s impossible to resist. Alex Conti and Frank Diez are seasoned musicians based in Germany with successful careers going back to the '70s. Veterans of such bands as Lake, Atlantis, Emergency and quite a few others, the two guitarists have solid backgrounds in heavy-grooving, riff-tastic blues and jazz-influenced combos. So, here we are in the late aughts, and along comes Berlin Blues, a heavy-grooving, riff-tastic blast the blues straight out of Deutschland.

These guys are not kids. They are serious, they know how to play and they've recorded a fun, kickass guitar-soaked adventure into Euro-blues. There's also plenty of impressive and very rocking Hammond-werk (especially on "Down, Down and Down") to leaven Conti and Diez's twin six-string assault. The vocals, if occasionally uneven, are perfectly enjoyable. This album is an unexpected treat, and connoisseurs of blues guitar will want to recommend it.

Increadibly rare, one of the only true privately pressed DIY rock lps out of Australia, and it is a killer… female and some male vocal led heavy psych blues in a similar vein to the UK blues influenced bands of the time…~. From 1969 comes this blues rock lp housed in screenprinted front sleeve. From what I understand, there were only about 50 copies ever sold of this lp, max, making it one of the more difficult Australian lp’s from the psych prog era to locate. …~ Super rare privately pressed OZ Blues from 1969. Recorded at Natec Studios in Sydney over 1968 and 1969. The cover is a unique screen printed diy job. Finger blotches of the paint are present on the back cover!. The original roneod insert sheet is included. This legendary LP is almost impossible to find these days. …~ The Foreday Riders would probably be 2nd only to Chain as far as Australia’s legendary blues bands go & here is the first album that started it all. Released in 1969 as a limited edition independent release, a rarity in those days, this Self Titled release show the King Bros (Ron: Harmonica & Vocals) & Jeff (Guitar/Slide Guitar) had their blooz chops down pat from the start. They were also keen spotters of talent as this album includes the debut recordings of 2 genuine Oz legends of song in Broderick Smith (1 song) & Jeannie (or Jean as she’s credited) Lewis (2 songs). In fact Jeannie’s 1st track is Cocaine Blues, a song she would later revisit on her own 2nd solo album, again with the Foredays backing her. Like the Foredays, the formidable vocal talents of both is evident even at this early stage of their careers. Apart from Ron, the other vocalist on these recordings is, or was, unknown to me until I heard the album last year. Her name is Jill Drury & she’s a real lost talent, with a voice not unlike an early Janis Joplin in her folk/blues years & before she joined Big Brother. So not the full on roar that Janis developed but a good strong bluesy howl nonetheless. This was ripped from a remastered bootleg CD but despite that, the sound is’t great perhaps because the original production wasn’t up to much. It still sounds OK tho ….~ The Foreday Riders, led by Ron and Jeff King, are still playing great blues after 40+ years. As for your comment about Jill Drury, Micko, you’re right about her talent but she’s not lost. Jill’s married name is Tweedie and, after having a family, has been singing on/off with the Riders and the King Brothers for many years. She also currently performs with female trio on the NSW central coast called Hip Sister. Most recently, Jill and The Riders played at the Echuca Blues Festival on August 1st and then a 42nd Anniversary reunion gig at Windsor in Sydney on August 15th when members from across the years got together and played from 08.30pm until 1.15am….a big night! Jill tells me that the gig went well and was filmed but it is uncertain what will be done with it. “Mystery Train” is on Youtube and it is possible more may follow. As for this 1969 album, Broderick Smith and Jeannie Lewis were “special guests”. If my memory serves me correctly, Brod was on leave in Sydney during his National Service when he recorded “Got To Get To My Baby” with Jill, who was 17 at the time. ….~

Touring since the age of 17, the Sheffield-born Carrack wrote and sang 'How Long', the much-covered 1974 classic from his days with Ace, and was the voice of 'Tempted', from his tenure with Squeeze. Then came such hits with Mike + the Mechanics as the GRAMMY-nominated 'The Living Years' and 'Over My Shoulder', the latter a co-write with Mike Rutherford. Not to mention that another co-write, ‘Love Will Keep Us Alive’, was covered by the Eagles and won a prestigious ASCAP award for Song of the Year. Diana Ross, no less, covered Carrack’s co-write with Nick Lowe, ‘Battlefield’, and as an in-demand collaborator, Paul’s decades of distinction include sessions with The Smiths, Elton John, Roxy Music, B.B. King and countless others, culminating in an invitation from Eric Clapton to join his touring band. Since the turn of the century, Paul has been gaining real, independent momentum since he formed his own Carrack-UK label in 2000 with the landmark ‘Satisfy My Soul’ release. He has quietly built a huge, loyal fan base, the audience that not only devours his albums, but turns out to see his frequent, extensive tours in their thousands. He’s done that the only way he knows: by making high-quality, accessible pop-soul with unmissable hooks and lyrics that say something about all of our lives. Napoleon Brown Goodson Culp (October 12, 1929 – September 20, 2008) better known by his stage name Nappy Brown was from Charlotte, North Carolina. He began his career singing gospel music before switching to R&B. In 1954 he won a recording contract with Savoy Records, which yielded a series of hits, including "Don't Be Angry" (#2 R&B, #25 pop, 1955), "Pitter Patter" (#10 R&B, 1955), "Little By Little" (#57 pop, 1956), and "It Don't Hurt No More" (#8 R&B, #89 pop, 1958). The hits dried up so Brown spent the next couple decades touring, performing his hits, quickly becoming an oldies act.

In the early 1980s, following the Blues revival buoyed by ZZ Hill's smash "Down Home" album, some of Brown's early songs being released on European albums. At the urging of Bob Margolin, former guitarist for Muddy Waters's band and a fan of Brown, Brown returned to the music industry, beginning with a successful tour of Scandinavia in 1983. New Brown recordings appeared in 1984 with the album "Tore Up", with guitarist Tinsley Ellis' & the Heartfixers. In 1987 Black Top Records released the acclaimed "Something Gonna Jump Out the Bushes". Ichiban Records next signed Brown for two albums, 1990's "Apples & Lemons" and 1991's "Aw! Shucks".

Over the next sixteen years Brown kicked around from label to label like JSP, Ripete, RBD & New Moon until one last comeback album for Blind Pig. That album, 2007's "Long Time Coming", proved to be one of his very best LPs and he received several Blues Music Awards nominations and his highest profile since the 50s. Brown died in his sleep on September 20, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Frank Catalano and Lurrie Bell were both signed to record deals in 1995 by famed producer Bob Koester; Catalano was only 18 and Bell was 36 at the time. Both musicians went on to have storied careers. Lurrie Bell is bonified blues royalty and was recently inducted into the Blue Hall of Fame in Memphis. He started playing with his father Carey Bell at age 7 and went on to play with Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, and many other blues giants.

Frank Catalano first sat in with his mentor Von Freeman at age 11; Pearl Bailey and Louie Bellson at age 12; Miles Davis at age 13; and Tony Bennett at age 14. At age 16, Frank’s career was on an amazing path and he was asked to perform at the Grammys. On his way to the airport, he was in a horrific car accident and his right middle finger was cut off. Catalano’s budding career and life were in jeopardy, but he beat the odds and relearned his signature saxophone technique.

Bell’s career was on a path to stardom when his undiagnosed bipolar and schizophrenia go the better of him. Initially, he failed to receive the medical treatment he needed and unfortunately experienced periods of homelessness and other adversities. Thankfully in 2016, Lurrie’s album “Can’t Shake This Feeling” received a Grammy nomination and his career was again on an upward trajectory.

Both musicians have overcome adversity to become the accomplished artists that they are today. Listen to their music and you will hear that they pour their heart and soul into every note they play. “Set Me Free” is a testament to their mutual love of music and gratefulness for the quality of life that they have now achieved. /Bluestown Music

Co-written with longtime sidekick Tom Wilson (Blackie and the Rodeo Kings) and the MacDonald Brothers (The Trews), the new album finds James powerfully building on a repertoire that has earned him eight JUNO Awards, 31 Maple Blues Awards, and induction in the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame. Colin James’ career has spanned over 35 years, with a track record that includes 20 studio albums and multi-platinum record sales. His 2021 release, Open Road, won the JUNO Award for best Blues Album and was nominated for Blues Foundation best Blues Rock Album in 2023.

Colin continues to sell out shows across Canada with his trio, full band and The Little Big Band. He performs throughout the US extensively and later this fall will embark on a blues river cruise for a week in France.

When he was 17, he started his first band, playing blues at clubs in Rome, and eventually moved to Milan. In 1989 he established the Alex Britti Blues Band. He has worked with Buddy Miles, Billy Preston, Louisiana Red and has toured Europe with Rosa King. In the mid-1990s, he toured with Francesco De Gregori. The experience prompted Britti to switch to a more soft rock-oriented sound. He had his first hit in 1998 when "Solo una volta (o tutta la vita)" made it to the top of the Italian charts. In 1999 he won in the newcomers category at the San Remo festival with the song "Oggi sono io".

As the milestone tenth studio album from blues luminary Ruthie Foster, Mileage finds the singer-songwriter reflecting on a life full of professional triumphs, personal loss, and a musical journey that took a self-described “little Black girl with a guitar” from singing at churches in rural Texas to chalking up multiple Grammy nominations and collaborating with fellow greats such as Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.

Working alongside acclaimed producer Tyler Bryant (of Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown fame), Foster unveils a collection of songs that was born from heartfelt conversations about her story. When the two native Texans first sat down (joined by Rebecca Lovell, Bryant’s wife and one-half of the duo Larkin Poe) to work on a song together, they were still warming up to each other as songwriters and feeling out the possibility of a full project. As the ideas, lyrics, and melodies began to flow, the album that emerged is one that reverberates with a beautiful creative synergy.

“One of the things I loved most about working with Ruthie was hearing her story,” said Bryant. “Every writing session started with a conversation and my wife Rebecca and I were both continuously inspired by Ruthie’s way of speaking her unique truth in song. I learned quickly to just have the microphones on, ‘cause when Ruthie starts singing, it’s gonna be a moment worth capturing.” Even when she wasn’t singing, it was often the way Ruthie would speak her truth in conversation that became the inspiration for a song. The trio were kicking around the idea of a traveling song and the topic of Ruthie’s age came up. “I told them, ‘Honey, I got mileage!’ and Tyler’s ears perked up,” Ruthie laughs. “He said, ‘That’s a song!’” And thus the wide-open road, wide-open heart title track was born.

The album’s soulful first single, “Rainbow,” is a hopeful message of simply letting love be love. “People ask me what is love?” sings Foster. “I just point to you. People get so hung up; I just run to you.” It’s a powerful message from a queer Black female artist speaking to her journey through love and life. Mileage marks a profound collaboration with Sun Records, intertwining Foster's narrative with the legendary label's rich tapestry of musical history and inviting listeners to embark on a soul-stirring voyage through the heartland of American music. Foster's partnership with Sun signifies a union of past influences and future aspirations, echoing the label's commitment to fostering unique voices and timeless artistry.

This veteran blues artist has a sense of humor that lightens up the dark recesses of blues. His opening tune “My Girl’s a Nut,” has a Roger Miller-type of country humor tacked onto a blues drive. With cut 2 Curtis slides into a more soulful position with “Better Things To Lie About” & the brass punctuations work solidly with his enthusiastic vocals. The brass doesn’t play it straight it’s arranged like a chorale of voices that answer each other with deep saxes, sharp trumpets & Curtis’ vocals echoing through a street that’s empty except for a whiplash harmonica blast. Cool tune. This out-funks most funk 70s bands & with the addition of the bluesy harmonica adds a soulful twist.

Salgado’s 1980s former boss guitarist/vocalist Robert Cray guests on “Forget About You,” a galloping blues saloon unified vocal variable that’s simply blues having fun. There are 12 invitations to some soulful blues on Fine By Me that can also lasso ears unfamiliar with the genre since Curtis is an artist who is also entertaining. The album features a variety of song styles from blues, gospel, R&B, jazz, funk R&R & soul with dashes of mixes that bring out the Salgado (harmonica) distinctive flavors. Curtis produced the album & the deep gospel efforts feature the harmonies of The Sons of the Soul Revivers (brothers James, Walter & Dwayne Morgan).

By the tracks “You Give The Blues a Bad Name,” & “Under New Management” there’s a tint of Paul Butterfield Blues Band when they employed some brass in the late 60s. The tune has a Boz Scaggs feel & it drips off the blues sultry & swampy. “Under,” is a little more commercial-mainstream than many other tunes. But it still holds since it’s played & sung with well-articulated harmonica & piano. Snapping fingers is a nice touch. Curtis may have a blues pathology in his voice but he’s cleverly alive as an entertainer. /John Apice, Americana Highways

Around 1982, the two Moser brothers, Harald and Helmut, and Hermann Rack, a friend of both, decided to make music together. Hermann played drums, Harald played blues harp and a little guitar, and Helmut also played guitar and was kind enough to sing a little. A bassist and various other amateur musicians were quickly found and the band played whatever was fun with a changing line-up. Even then, however, the blues ran like a red thread through the sessions. During this time, the three main actors spent a lot of time in the region's music clubs, and the Klimperkasten (now Colos-Saal) in particular became the most popular meeting place. One particular band also became the clear favorite of the three: the Hoochie Coochie Bluesband. The band around the Scondo brothers Steve and Rainer played rousing Chicago blues and awakened in the three the desire to take things a little more seriously. In the meantime, a regular line-up had also emerged: Guido Helmling on bass and Georg Schmitt, guitar and flute, completed the trio. A name for the band was quickly found: the initials of the first names (HHH and GG) were a triplet and a pair - a full house. But since they didn't take themselves too seriously at the time, "Full" quickly became "Fool" and the FOOLHOUSE BLUESBAND was born. Now serious rehearsals were undertaken and a program was put together, which was given a very special touch not least by Georg's virtuoso playing of the transverse flute. The men increasingly shared the work on the vocals and Hermann in particular set off with his raspy voice on the trip along the Tobacco Road, which he has not left to this day. The first performances followed in jazz cellars, Hanau, in youth centers, at regional open air events and festivals, and the band gradually gained more and more audiences. The band also managed to not only perform in front of, but finally also on stage in the beloved Klimperkasten (today the CLOS-SAAL). At some point a young lady wandered into the rehearsal room and sang the blues as if she had never done anything else. The matter was immediately clear and from then on Jessica Born acted as the front woman of the band. The band fondly remembers the highlights of the era that followed as the opening act for the original Blues Brothers, Eric Burdon, Luther Allison, BB King and the Climax Bluesband.
