Originally released back in 1980, at a time when traditional country artists seemed to be struggling to understand where their sound would fit in with the newly polished production of the time, his eight-song collection The Real Thang was only released on vinyl and met with mixed reviews when it came out. Listening to it now, it's odd to think that the album's blend of White's signature swamp rock sound and smooth late 70s disco was so cruelly overlooked, because it feels totally in step with a lot of other things that were happening in country in the early 1980s.

45 years on and it fits perfectly on any playlist of whatever Kenny and Dolly were up to at the time, Glen Campbell's 80s weird country masterpiece Its The World Gone Crazy, Merle Haggard's 'That's the Way Love Goes' or Waylon Jennings' seminal Music Man.

It's Waylon who rides shotgun as The Real Thang is taken once more around the block with White’s estate, helmed by his son, Jody White, announcing a grand unearthing of the album with a deeper dive into what made the era so intriguing, kicking off with the release of the album's first previously unreleased bonus cut, 'Cowboy Singer' co-written with Waylon Jennings.

“The original album included 8 songs from this wildly experimental time in Tony Joe's career,” says Jody. “As I began to explore a re-release of this lost album, I discovered that TJW had written and recorded many more songs during this period of exploration, but most of them had never seen the light of day. They were kept locked away in his large stash of studio reel-to-reels, and nobody was able to listen... until now.”
The new version of The Real Thang has 18 songs. The first half is a showcase of White’s singing and songwriting as a country artist and includes several songs he wrote and sang with Waylon Jennings during their time together in the ‘70s. The back half finds White moving into more of the “swamp funk” jam sessions, which became instrumental in his live shows.

Tony Joe White (July 23, 1943 – October 24, 2018), nicknamed the Swamp Fox, was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known for his 1969 hit "Polk Salad Annie" and for "Rainy Night in Georgia", which he wrote but which was first made popular by Brook Benton in 1970. He also wrote "Steamy Windows" and "Undercover Agent for the Blues", both hits for Tina Turner in 1989; those two songs came by way of Turner's producer at the time, Mark Knopfler, who was a friend of White. "Polk Salad Annie" was also recorded by Joe Dassin, Elvis Presley, and Tom Jones.

Tony Joe White - The Shine

08. Something To Soften The Blow (4:56)
09. Roll Train Roll (5:42)
10. A Place To Watch The Sun Go Down (4:08)

The 21st century saw Tony Joe White resume his recording and performing career, and experience a resurgence of critical interest in his older music as well. Since 2002, "the Swamp Fox" has recorded sporadically for his own Swamp imprint, and also had his back catalog remastered and reissued. Earlier in 2010, Rhino Handmade made available That On the Road Look, a previously unreleased live date. The Shine is a (mostly) low-key, basic affair. White wrote or co-wrote everything here with his wife, Leann. The band is a quintet: White plays guitars and harmonica with drummer Jack Bruno, cellist John Catchings, bassist George Hawkins, and Tyson Rogers on piano, organ, and Wurlitzer. The sound is warm and raw; the album feels like it was cut mostly live from the floor (with guitar and vocal overdubs added) and it's full of natural atmospherics. White's acoustic nylon-string guitar is prevalent, sometimes more so than his quavering, downright spooky baritone. His electric six-string work paints the backdrop. The only real exceptions are the downright rocker "Strange Night," where White displays everything that Mark Knopfler copped from his style inside of five minutes. The levels feel off, overloaded; the vocals come from the backdrop as the guitars and drums smoulder, smoke, and bubble. A broken love song, everything in it bleeds into everything else: it expresses pain as an immediate, crushing experience; it evokes everything from anger to tenderness. "Something to Soften the Blow" is an electric country waltz, sad, beautiful, and lonely. The protagonist is desperate for comfort in seeking a one-night stand from what is perhaps a sympathetic other. White somehow manages to pull off his plea without coming off as pathetic; he wears his brokenness with dignity. "Season Man" is a classic White minor-key narrative about a drifter. "Ain't Doing Nobody No Good" is a droning swamp blues, full of dread and sinister purpose. "Long Way from the River" is a backbeat-driven deeply atmospheric folk song that contains a classic White line: "When you're running with the swamp, the rain is gonna fall." "Roll Train Toll" is pure Delta-style folk-blues, played solo on a steel-string acoustic guitar; it's loaded with a quiet yet ever-present menace ready to break the surface, though it never does, and is all the more effective as a result. Ultimately, The Shine is White's most consistent and gratifying offering since he began recording again. ~Thom Jurek

11. Did Someboda Make A Fool Out Of You (4:15)

This 1973 album features one of Tony Joe’s most beautiful and moving breaking up songs with “For Ol’ Time Sake”, in which you can feel the pain and the need of the one that’s just been left behind, and the killer instrumental title track. There’s the ballad, “Ol’ Mother Earth”, but it’s the last track which blows in like a cold breeze off a lake. “Did Somebody Make A Fool Out Of You” is among his best ever examples of songwriting, singing and guitar playing. The centerpiece of the tune is an acoustic guitar solo that has never lost its power and depth. Co-produced by White and legendary Atlantic producer Tom Dowd ‘Home Made Ice Cream’ is very much a back porch acoustic affair and it’s “Swampy”.

Tony Joe White - Take Home The Swamp

Size: 76,9 MB

06. You Got Me Running (2:56)
07. You Got Me Running (Alt.) (Bonus) (1:28)
08. Polk Salad Annie (Bonus) (3:34)

It's difficult to say anything about Tony Joe White's Take Home the Swamp. First, it feels like a bootleg; Europe's Music Avenue Records gave it a kind of stripped-down presentation, and the sound from different sources furthers that impression. Only White can say whether it is or not. If it is, he should get paid double because sloppy or not, this baby smokes. After 2004's Heroines, with Emmylou Harris, Jessi Colter, Lucinda Williams, and Shelby Lynne (can White pick his duet partners or what?) and 2006's slick guest-studded Uncovered, this (perhaps unauthorized?) raw, funky, swamp-rich live album comes as something of a shock. At only a shade over 32 minutes, Take Home the Swamp is a semi load of blasting Swamp Fox that induces chills, fever, and -- to use an over-worn political catch phrase in a new context -- shock and awe. Here are blues standards such as "Baby Please Don't Go" and Jimmy Reed's "You Got Me Running" mixed with White's own classics such as "Roosevelt and Ira Lee," "I Want You Baby," and "Hard to Handle." White is playing his Fender Stratocaster and harmonica and growling with soul and fire. It's all intense, all seductive as hell, all spine-tingling and ass-shaking. Playing lead guitar fills and solo and harmonica at the same time is a White strength, one of the many on display here, but it's the vibe that makes it all happen -- that sexual unbridled need and knowing that pour from the stage like smoke, entering everyone at the gig and spelling them to dance really close. But it's so simple: guitar, bass, drums, harmonica, and vocal in front, taken from different performances, along with what sounds like an outtake of "Polk Salad Annie" with horns and the like that is dirtier and even funkier than the single version, with an in-the-red guitar solo in the middle complete with Louisiana dirt wah-wah pedal. This is one to snag -- and quick, because who knows how long it will be around. ~Thom Jurek

While there was a certain "mystique" surrounding TJ White in the USA, it was in Europe where he gained legendary status. In 1991 he signed with Remark and debuted Closer To The Truth and spent the next two years touring Europe with Eric Clapton and Joe Cocker, among others. He cut two more albums for Remark, 1993s Path Of A Decent Groove and '95s Lake Placid Blues, the latter garnering the first of two nominations for "Best R & B Album" from the Nashville Music Awards, (the second being, The Best Of Tony Joe White, a 1996 retrospective of his work on Warner Bros.). French audiences eagerly embraced White as the ‘Swamp Fox’ and in 1998, he became the subject of a French produced documentary: Tony Joe White-The Man From Down South. In 1999, White went back to his roots and recorded One Hot July, in the swamps of Louisiana. In 2001, Audium and Koch Entertainment released The Beginning - a stripped down in your face acoustic masterpiece that received worldwide recognition and five star ratings in virtually every country. In 1992 TJ White toured Europe again and played this show in the beautiful German town of Baden-Baden.

10. Down The Dirt Road Blues (4:19)
11. Stockholm Blues (3:37)
12. Heartbreak Hotel (3:43)

The blues has never been far from Tony Joe White’s sound. Best known as a swamp rocker and, with early hit “Polk Salad Annie,” somewhat of an off-kilter pop/soul man, White’s dusky baritone voice, laconic delivery, shadowy harmonica and snakelike guitar were never more than a few chords away from a bluesman’s approach. It’s no coincidence that Eric Clapton, Etta James, Joe Cocker, and Robert Cray have covered his songs.

But this is considered White’s first full-fledged blues release. Where he once waded ankle deep in the genre, he fully submerges himself in the muddy Mississippi delta, covering songs made famous by blues legends John Lee Hooker (“Boom Boom”), Lightnin’ Hopkins (“Awful Dreams”), and Jimmy Reed (“Big Boss Man”). White, who has recorded sporadically since 1969, doesn’t need to bolster his organic bona fides. Yet this album’s near primal recording setting (in his barn), with songs played either solo or with occasional skeletal drums and bass backing, scales back White’s already stripped down vibe to its core.

The opening title track, along with a comparatively frisky cover of Charley Patton’s “Down The Dirt Road Blues,” is the singer-songwriter at his most rhythmically propulsive. The majority of songs, such as the muggy Southern summer dog day vibe of “Sundown Blues,” pulse with slow hypnotically repeated riffs, perfect for White’s dry, husky, talk-sung drawl, punctuated by his Dylan-on-downers harp. The approach shifts from unaccompanied solo acoustic guitar on classics “Baby Please Don’t Go,” “Big Boss Man” and arguably the most chilling version of “Heartbreak Hotel” ever recorded, to a fuller electric yet still nakedly intense “Boom Boom.”

No one breaks much of a sweat here. White’s distinctive mumble seems like it was recorded while drifting in and out of a narcotic-induced coma. Nevertheless, this music resonates with the dark, ominous, rootsy authenticity Tony Joe White has always exuded. ~Hal Horowitz

Recorded at his own studio and produced by his son, Jody White, Rain Crow summons recollections of long ago, when animals foretold the weather, tongue-talking worshippers proved their faith by handling snakes and a “bad wind” could drive a man to edge of insanity.

The nine-song set features new compositions White wrote over the past three years, including co-writes with his wife, Leann, and Billy Bob Thornton on “The Middle of Nowhere.” Known for popularizing swamp music, White has written gems like “Polk Salad Annie” and “Rainy Night in Georgia,” and has had his songs performed by Elvis, Ray Charles, and Tina Turner.

9. Sweet Tooth [4:37]

WHILE he could be accused of being an old stick-in-the-mud, Tony Joe White knows he's on solid ground with swamp rock, the enduring sound he helped to legitimise.

The singer-songwriter's roots are so deeply entrenched in the southern backwoods that he risks self-parody. The Louisianan's languid singing style, a bottom-end drawl that long has been a calling card, and his casual fuzzbox/wah-wah pedal-enhanced electric guitar combine with a stripped-back recording approach to suggest that the septuagenarian is barely exerting himself. That is White's strength and weakness.

Cut live-to-tape in White's home studio in mostly single takes with drummer Bryan "Cadillac" Owings and bass player Steve "Troll" Forrest, Hoodoo could be construed as a long jam session with protracted guitar breaks. It's doubtful whether there's anything on TJW's 33rd release to match the calibre of his best-known songs Rainy Night in Georgia and Polk Salad Annie, several tracks could inveigle their way into listeners' grey matter.

Trademark swamp-rockers The Gift and Who You Gonna Hoodoo Now? and the shuffling blues Gypsy Epilogue and Sweet Tooth are potential candidates. Lyrically, 9 Foot Sack, White's mumbled recollection of an impoverished childhood on a cotton farm ("we always was happy having a roof over our head") and the harmonica-boosted The Flood, in which the songwriter talks of witnessing "guitars floating down the river".

Hoodoo
