Music Makin' Mama starts with a bang and ends with a boogie -- the bang is Rabson's revved-up take on Huey "Piano" Smith's "Baby, Every Once in a While," and the boogie is a solo instrumental ode to two of her piano heroes, Jimmy Yancey and Meade Lux Lewis. Between these two end pieces, Rabson navigates through bluesy territory with her trademark gusto, digging up songs by Ray Charles, Big Bill Broonzy, Bessie Smith, and Cow Cow Davenport, while also throwing in a few originals for good measure. Not surprisingly, Music Makin' Mama will sound a fair bit rootsier than the typical Saffire -- The Uppity Blues Women album; Rabson, after all, has long been the traditionalist torchbearer in the group, and her burning reverence for the dusty, old blues song certainly shines through here. While this is technically her debut solo album, Rabson has been playing some of these songs for decades, and there's nothing tentative about her playing here. The solo cuts in particular (Smith's "He's Got Me Goin'," Roosevelt Sykes' "Skin and Bones," and Rabson's "Blue Boogie") stand out for their simple charm and pinpoint delivery. On the ensemble numbers, Rabson gets a helping hand from an all-star backing band that includes saxman Greg Piccolo, violinist Mimi Rabson (Ann's sister), and Alligator labelmates John Cephas, Phil Wiggins, and Bob Margolin. In 1998, Music Makin' Mama was nominated for two W.C. Handy Awards (for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year and Traditional Blues Album of the Year). ~Review by Ken Chang

Rabson continues to forge her own unique path in the blues world with Not Alone, an album that features the guitar work and vocals of another low-key blues legend, Bob Margolin. It's not exactly an album of duets -- Rabson sings most of the leads and her piano playing is featured throughout -- but it's not entirely a solo effort, either, since Margolin only performs solo on a couple of tracks. What is clear is that both players are having a ball and their energy and good humor are infectious. The album is a delight from start to finish. Except for Margolin's "Let It Go" -- a bluesy rhumba marked by Rabson's rippling piano arpeggios and lyrics delivered in a wry drawl that bring to mind the philosophical ruminations of Mose Allison -- the tunes here are mostly familiar covers. Rabson reinvents the material with her surprising arrangements and on-the-money vocals. "Let's Go Get Stoned," the Ashford & Simpson tune made popular by Ray Charles, gets a downtempo treatment that celebrates excess with a gospel-flavored arrangement. Rabson delivers the Rev. Thomas Dorsey standard "I'm Going to Live the Life I Sing About in My Song" with a wry approach that manages to sound both spiritual and carnal, especially when she sings: "I can't say one thing and then do another, be a saint by day and a devil under covers." A boogie-woogie cover of Louis Jordan's "Caledonia" features Margolin's smooth, laid-back guitar work supporting Rabson's excellent piano work, while her ragtime reading of Hudson Whitaker's almost obscene "Let's Get Drunk and Truck" is a pure delight. ~J. A 1995 club appearance by Big Jack Johnson led to the conception of a new independent blues label. Mark Carpentieri and his wife Catherine were so impressed with the bluesman's performance and personality, that they plunged themselves into the production of his first CD in four years. Carpentieri had minimal production experience with some regional bands but the Johnson recording appeared in June 1996. M.C. Records is still an artist-friendly roots and blues label with a couple of Grammy nominations and a dozen W.C.Handy Award recommendations.
The period of 1996 to 2002 saw the release of 15 successful CDs and the addition of a great variety of seasoned artists. Johnson was followed by Kim Wilson, R.L.Burnside and Odetta. The varied styles of electric, urban, rural and acoustic elements continues today enhancing the appeal of the label to a wide spectrum of blues fans. Having reviewed five releases over the past couple of years, I'm excited over the compilation album to hit the streets on February 25, 2003.
The Best of M.C. Records 1996-2002 features selected tracks from all fifteen issued albums plus a glance at things to come. An upcoming tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe will appear later this year and a tempting appetizer from that record is included. Maria Muldaur and Tracy Nelson perform the Tharpe original, Up Above My Head.
In addition to those mentioned above, this compilation offers you a chance to sample the music of Wild Child Butler, Joanna Connor, Philip Walker's big blues band and Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson. If you haven't already been smitten, as I have, by the explosive Ann Rabson, you're in for a treat! The country tinged Detour by Sleepy Labeef is a delight too. ~Richard Bourcier

While Ann Rabson has made a name for herself as a member of the popular blues trio, Saffire, it's quite a revelation to hear her solo. Whereas Saffire dazzles with multiple vocalists and the occasional risqué number, Rabson reveals herself as more than another revivalist jumping on the acoustic blues wagon. Sure, she can write within the tradition ("I'd Rather Be Alone"), but she's also fully capable of turning in a fresh version of a venerable warhorse like "See See Rider." Rabson's able to pull this off time and again thanks to her deeply felt vocals combined with an excellent backup band. She has a rich, penetrating singing style all her own, and even when singing a swinging upbeat song like "Little Red Wagon," she never sounds like she's showing off. Rabson also plays piano, and she's joined by a crack band featuring violinist Mimi Rabson and trombonist Dave Harris. Mimi Rabson provides a nice, bluesy difference on pieces like "I Can't Get My Mind Off of You," while Harris adds a spunky spontaneity to "I Want to Hop on Your Harley." If In a Family Way seems to sag a bit toward the end, it's probably because it's hard to maintain the kind of intensity Rabson displays forever. In a Family Way will please anyone who demands that his or her blues be delivered with feeling. ~Ronnie D. Lankford Jr
