When Lonnie Mack’s treatment of Chuck Berry’s ‘Memphis’ broke into the US Hot 100 on 8 June 1963 and peaked at #5 during its 13-week stay, he was initially pigeonholed as an instrumental artist. This perception was heightened by ‘Down In The Dumps’ on the flip, and furthered by his double-sided instrumental follow-up whose topside, ‘Wham!’, reached #28. Six months later the other side of Lonnie was revealed with his first vocal 45. The topside was a dynamic re-vamp of Jimmy Reed’s ‘Baby, What’s Wrong’, backed with a version of the gospel classic ‘Where There’s A Will’. Here you could hear him emoting in a way white singers never did – hollering, pleading and screaming in the very finest gospel tradition. The track was even picked up by some black radio stations in the south, but quietly dropped once it was realised that Lonnie was white. ‘Memphis’ was recorded at King Records Studio in Cincinnati on 12 March 1963. Carl Edmondson had been booked to produce a split session for Max Falcon, Kenny Smith and the Charmaines, but Edmondson’s band had recently broken up, so Lonnie and his crew were drafted in. With some time left at the end of the session, Lonnie was asked if he had anything he might like to record. ‘Memphis’ was the result. Edmondson thought the track had potential and suggested to Fraternity Records boss, Harry Carlson, that he should put it out. Within weeks it was climbing the charts, launching Lonnie’s long career. Post-Fraternity releases on Elektra, Capitol, Epic and Alligator cemented his reputation as the man who brought gospel, soul, blues, country and rock’n’roll together. He was one of the creators of blue-eyed soul, as well as the leading light for the legion of blues-based rock guitarists who plied their trade from the 60s onwards. It has to be said, though, that the bedrock of his legend rests on his Fraternity recordings, which highlighted both sides of Lonnie Mack – the vocalist and the guitarist.

Lonnie Mack - Strike Like Lightning

Size: 97,4 MB

Released: 1985
Styles: Electric blues
Art: Full

1. Hound Dog Man (4:08)
2. Satisfy Susie (4:33)
3. Stop (5:26)
4. Long Way From Memphis (3:24)
5. Double Whammy (3:38)
6. Strike Like Lightning (3:43)
7. Falling Back In Love With You (5:00)
8. If You Have To Know (4:34)
9. You Ain't Got Me (2:41)
10. Oreo Cookie Blues (4:52)

Co-produced by Stevie Ray Vaughn, this was Lonnie's ticket back to the show after a few years on the sidelines. To say it was an inspired date would be putting it mildly. With his batteries recharged, Mack was in peak form, playing and singing better than ever. A major highlight is an inspired duet between Stevie and Lonnie on "Wham (Double Whammy)," going toe to toe for several exciting choruses. /Cub Koda, AllMusic

Cut in front of an appreciative throng at Fitzgerald's in suburban Chicago, Mack cuts loose the way he so often does in concert, sticking almost exclusively to his Alligator-era tunes ("Satisfy Suzie," "Cincinnati Jail," the tortured soul ballad "Stop") and never looking too far backwards. /Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Lonnie Mack - Lonnie Mack And Pismo

Styles: Blues Rock, Country Rock

07. Lucy (4:01)
08. Ebony And Ivory (4:32)
09. Adobe Man (3:31)
10. Drift Away Again (3:58)

Signed to Capitol Records in the late 70s, Lonnie Mack made a brief return to recording with two albums both released in the same year. After the country-flavored Home At Last, Lonnie Mack & Pismo was something of a return to blues-rock. Indeed his flashy electric guitar playing featured prominently for the first time since the 60s. The band Pismo consisted of keyboard player Stan Szelest, bassist Tim Drummond and drummer Ian Wallace. Guitarist David Lindley also made a guest appearance.
The album was no doubt welcomed by those who missed Mack in his role as an electric guitar slinger, but it lacked any truly memorable songs. 1977 turned out not to be quite the comeback it could have been - that would have to wait until the 80s.

Cars had become one of the centers of American life by the 1920s and plenty of blues musicians we’re singing about them. It’s interesting that Blind Lemon Jefferson sang in several songs about driving cars, something he could never do as a blind man. In 1931, Memphis Minnie sang about her house burning down, but the only thing she’s worried about is losing her car. Robert Johnson sang some of the most poetic lyrics sexualizing the car as a woman. Modern day bluesmen have continued singing about cars as these titles show.

10. Stay Away From My Baby (3:46)
11. She Don't Come Here Anymore (4:24)

With the exception of his comeback album for Alligator, Strike like Lightning, nothing Mack has done since leaving Fraternity Records has come close to the wham-fisted brilliance of those seminal sides. This LP isn't bad at all, though -- besides passable remakes of "Memphis" and "Why," Mack attacks Frankie Ford's "Roberta," Ted Taylor's "Stay Away from My Baby," and Little Willie John's "Let Them Talk" with a slightly rockier edge than his previous stuff. R&B vet Maxwell Davis did the horn charts. ~Review by Bill Dahl

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Happy New Year Blues

11. Oreo Cookie Blues (With Lonnie Mack) (7:15)

By late 1986, Stevie Ray Vaughan had been through rehab in London and, according to all reports, was feeling like a new man. His dependency problems, which had haunted him right through his career, were he felt, now behind him and he was intent on two things; getting back to playing the blues and helping others overcome their own, similar problems. He achieved the former with ease and passion - this was, after all, what the master guitarist existed to do. The latter did not come so naturally, but SRV made commendable effort in his oft-witnessed stage announcements, advising and guiding his audience members, sharing the wisdom he had garnered in going through the hell he had suffered.

The concert featured on this CD is taken from an FM radio broadcast, transmitted live from the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, on New Year's Eve 1986, was clearly a dynamic event. Stevie and Double Trouble perform with gusto and flare, whilst the audience are wild with ecstasy. Joining Vaughan on stage after the new year kicks in is none other than guitar legend Lonnie Mack, and the two bluesmen bounce off each other beautifully for a magical rendition of Mack's Oreo Cookie Blues, which ends this extraordinary performance and readies Stevie Ray to enter what, tragically, would become the final, albeit majestic, era of his career - and sadly his life. /Amazon

He unleashes his vibrato-drenched axe on the torrid "Soul Express," "Lonnie on the Move," "Florence of Arabia," and an astonishing instrumental version of "Stand by Me" that'll send aspiring guitarists' jaws crashing to the floor. For a change of pace, "Men at Play" mines a jazzy walking groove to equally satisfying ends. ~by Bill Dahl

Over 74 minutes of scorching keepers from Lonnie Mack’s celebrated Alligator years. Modern rock’s first true guitar hero, Lonnie burst onto the national scene in 1963 with his groundbreaking single, Memphis. With his lightning-fast picking, soaring solos, wild whammy bar and huge, rough-hewn voice, his recordings (including the original Wham!) were venerated by a whole generation of string-benders. They had a huge influence on his #1 disciple, the young Stevie Ray Vaughan, who produced and played on Lonnie’s Alligator comeback album, Strike Like Lightning. This Best Of features six tracks from that record, plus three from the follow-up, Second Sight, and six from his thunderous live release Live-Attack Of The Killer V.

Songs of prison and captivity shaped what we have come to know as the blues. Angela Davis suggests that imprisonment was a central theme in blues music. This is borne out over and over. One of my favorite musicians, the great John Lee Hooker (who Bonnie Rait re-introduced to the mainstream in the 1990s) recorded his version of Prison Bound in 1949. In the song, he tackles the important ideas of the separation from loved ones and the sense of abandonment that can come from being incarcerated.

When they had my trial, baby
You know you couldn’t be found
When they had my trial
Baby, you could not be found
But it’s too late to cry, baby
Your daddy’s prison bound
