Roots guitar and lap steel hero Damon Fowler wows us all with tunes, tones, and talent on his new in-concert release Live at the Palladium.

The record is Fowler’s ninth solo effort and was captured live in front of a revved-up crowd. It all went down on Fowler’s native Florida turf, in the city of St. Petersburg. Those assembled were treated to a performance by one of today’s finest and most nuanced guitarists and songwriters backed by a high-octane band. The live recording was produced by Fowler and George Harris and delivers the same experience to all of us who couldn’t make the gig.

Damon Fowler is a complex, multifaceted musician who does a lot more than just stand up and blast out guitar solos. His guitar work and songwriting connect blues, country, funk, Americana, and storytelling in a vivid and personal way that obliterates genre lines as needed. His lap steel playing is soaring and dynamic, adding its own entire level to his coolness, and his vocals are honest and engaging.

When you hear it all come together live, as on this release, you’ll realize that Fowler is one of the players creating the future of American music in front of us all in real time. Accompanied by his regular road band of Justin Headley (drums) and Chuck Riley (bass) and special guests Jason Ricci (harmonica), Eddie Wright (guitar), and Dan Signor (keyboards), Fowler is in his element and unforgettable. This was one of those magic nights musicians and fans live for and it’s a blessing that it was preserved for future generations.

After a brief introduction, DF and friends hit the stage. Fowler rips off a few sweet guitar licks alone then leads the band into the swampy funk of “It Came Out Of Nowhere.” The groove is laidback but heavily funky and provides the perfect beginning to a jam-loaded show. Fowler puts down some tight rhythm work while singing then dives headlong into one of his inventive and colorful solos. Dan Signor shines on piano here, too, and does a lot to open up the energy of the song.

“The Guitar” is one of Fowler’s most impressive creations and an example of just how vast his range gets. It’s a talking blues/spoken word story song that tells a first-hand tale of having a sword-from-the-stone experience with a beat-up old guitar in a dusty, forgotten pawn shop. Damon lays it out over a crisp, minor groove and also adds the appropriate amount of guitar mastery. We won’t spoil the ending for you but it does get a little ghostly. It’s a brilliant, dramatic piece of performance art the likes of which you won’t encounter in too many other places. If you remember one song from this record, it’ll be this one.

Fowler heads back into swamp rock territory with the hypnotic “I’ve Been Low.” Justin Headley’s drum beat drives the song hard, keeping the band and crowd lit up. Fowler’s overdriven guitar tone is a thing of beauty, full of sparkle and bloom. The band pushes this one over the edge into an almost free-form improv section before taking things back home that’s exciting and unpredictable. This is why we love live music.

When it comes time for the real blues, Fowler breaks out with the slow and lowdown “Taxman.” Jason Ricci injects his mighty harmonica into the sparse arrangement and shines brightly. Fowler follows on guitar and also sings passionately throughout this story of IRS devastation. The whole thing is all vibe and you’re going to feast on it.

This night was magic from end to end and the best way to consume it is to put it on and let it blast. Be sure not to miss “Fruit Stand Lady” and “Old Fools, Bar Stools, and Me.” Fowler and his band are able to go from scream to whisper and back again with the style and grace of giants and that makes Live at the Palladium one of 2023’s first must-have albums. ~Mike O’Cull

Damon Fowler - Alafia Moon

Size: 122.0 MB
Time: 52:03
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2021
Styles: Electric Blues, Blues Rock
Art: Full

01. Leave It Alone (4:59)
02. I've Been Low (4:16)
03. Alafia Moon (4:34)
04. Make The Best Of Your Time (5:40)
05. The Guitar (4:02)
06. Hip To Your Trip (3:13)
07. Some Things Change (5:07)
08. Taxman (4:41)
09. Wanda (5:20)
10. The Umbrella (8:23)
11. Kicked His Ass Out (1:44)

The promotional materials for Alafia Moon emphasize Fowler’s guitar prowess. And they should. Fowler’s got guitar game, proven by gorgeous slide lines crying out like a person. But he’s also got a soulful voice and is a strong songwriter, meaning you’re not hearing an album of hot licks, but rather a collection of full-blown songs.

Fowler is from Florida, but sings with a subtle New Orleans lilt, making him occasionally sound Dr. John-esque. He understands his range and works within it, focusing on the emotion of his performance, rather than trying to dazzle the listener like we’re American Idol judges. Fowler also mixes things up with his songwriting. Every song is blues rock based, but he explores plenty of styles within that larger one.

The title track is a ballad allowing Fowler to showcase his voice. There’s a bit of sandpaper to his singing, which helps reinforce the tune’s underlying sadness. But backup vocals add a celestial quality to the song, making it a Beauty and the Beast type of situation. And it’s a tie between the two until Fowler’s slide comes in, wave after wave of gorgeous melodies dazzling the listener, beauty triumphing. I tend to listen for the technique beneath the music to help myself understand songs. Is someone playing a lot of notes? A few notes? But with Fowler, I’m unable to focus on anything but melody.

Fowler also knows his way around up-tempo tunes. “Hip to Your Trip” bounces along with a peppy groove, providing plenty of space for Fowler’s voice and more of that addictive slide. When we think of slide, it’s easy to go straight to Duane Allman, who perfected it within straight rock and roll. But Allman played in a huge band that was always jamming hard. He had to battle for every inch of audio space if he wanted anyone to hear him. He also played at an incredible intensity. Fowler, especially on this track, doesn’t have to fight for anything, so the slide lines are Allman-esque, but sound less focused on cutting through the music and more content to lay back and stay with the song.

The album checks in at ten tracks, but one track, “The Umbrella” is a long monologue set to music that doesn’t lend itself to repeated listenings. It sets up the next song, “Kicked His Ass Out,” a funny 50s-inspired novelty tune sung by Betty Fox, Fowler’s vocals rumbling way in the background, that shows off some of Fowler’s impressive rockabilly playing. However, it mostly feels like it’s from a different record. It’s always a good sign when you wish an album had more music, though.

Fowler’s guitar work is the real deal, but he’s more than that. Alafia Moon is full of great songs and vocal performances. He’s made a true album and not backing tracks for showing off his considerable six-string skill. Instead, Alafia Moon shows off Fowler’s many, varied skills. The Review: 8.5/10 ~Steven Ovadia

Damon Fowler - The Whiskey Bayou Session

08. Holiday (5:18)
09. Running Out Of Time (5:09)
10. Candy (3:43)
11. Florida Baby (4:52)

Damon Fowler was born in Brandon, Fl. eleven miles east of Tampa. He first picked up the guitar at the age of twelve and has since also mastered lap steel and Dobro. His songwriting reflects influences from blues, gospel, soul, country music and swamp rock. His debut recording “Riverview Drive”, produced by Rick Derringer, was released in 1999. Two more independently released albums followed before he signed with Blind Pig Records in 2007. Fowler’s Blind Pig debut was 2008’s “Sugar Shack” and it was followed with “Devil Got His Way” in 2011. Later that year Fowler teamed up with JP Soars, Victor Wainwright, Chris Peet and Chuck Riley, to form the southern rock band “Southern Hospitality”. In 2013 Tab Benoit produced their debut “Easy Livin’”. The following year Benoit produced Fowler’s last album “Sounds of Home”, his third for the Blind Pig imprint. Fowler has since played with Butch Trucks and The Freight Train Band, and The Dickie Betts Band.

When Benoit decided to begin his own label “Whiskey Bayou Records” Fowler was the first signed to the label. This album recorded at Benoit’s Houma Louisiana studio has been named “The Whiskey Bayou Session”. The band includes Fowler, guitar, lap steel and vocals; Todd Edmunds whose credits include Jason Ricci and New Blood, bass; and Justin Headley from Bill Wharton (The Sauce Boss), drums. Producer Benoit plays guitar on three tracks.

Fowler has co-written two songs with his regular writing partner Ed Wright. The opener “It Came Out of Nowhere” is a soulful tune sung by Fowler and it includes a fabulous guitar solo, while Benoit plays rhythm. “Candy” a country styled tune features Benoit on acoustic guitar and the lyric “mama gets all the candy she wants”.

Fowler has also written six songs with Benoit. “Fairweather Friend” features Fowler on his telecaster. “Ain’t Gonna Rock With You No More” features Fowler on slide; on “Pour Me” Benoit plays rhythm again while Fowler solos. “Holiday” is another soulful vocal; “Running Out of Time” a great groove, while “Florida Baby” features Fowler on a lap steel guitar.

Fowler and Benoit have also chosen to cover three songs. “Hold Me Tight” was written by reggae superstar Johnny Nash and it’s a perfect vehicle for Fowler’s soulful voice; “Up The Line” is from Little Walter Jacobs; while “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” is a traditional gospel tune and another great vocal from Fowler as he again plays lap steel.

Fowler has chosen Benoit as his producer but Benoit has also chosen well. Benoit has taken his sparse production values and applied them to Fowler. The result is the best we have ever heard from Fowler. This is a fabulous album but I would like to hear them sing together. ~Richard Ludmerer

Damon Fowler is a master of the six string, slide guitar, lap steel and Dobro who’s been compared to Johnny Winter and Jeff Beck, while his slide guitar has a hint of the late Duane Allman.

Born in Brandon, Damon Fowler’s first association with the guitar began at the age of twelve, and by experience has expanded his skills and range to include playing acoustic, electric, lap steel, and dobro, incorporating slide techniques. In his teenage years, Fowler played at small clubs in the Tampa Bay Area. With a growing local reputation, he began to appear as a support act, both on other musicians tours and at music festivals. His debut album, Riverview Drive (1999), was self-released and included material all written by Fowler. Rick Derringer both played on, and produced the record. Further self releases of Roots and Branches (2000) and the live album, Live at Skipper's Smoke House (2003) followed, which gained Fowler critical notice from the music press.

Severe injuries sustained in a car crash in December 2005 sidelined the acclaimed singer-songwriter and ace guitarist for almost a year. Then, in March 2007, Blind Pig Records announced the signing of Fowler. His first issue with them was the largely blues based album, Sugar Shack (2009). Sugar Shack rose to No. 12 on Billboard's Top Blues Albums chart. Billboard commented that "Fowler may be so skillful that he prefers pickin' tasty to larger-than-life guitar heroics. Fowler wrote nine of the 12 tunes on the album, and his original material is solid." Fowler also performed at Memphis in May in 2009. Following the release of Devil Got His Way two years later, Allmusic remarked that "Fowler's creative lap steel work is what sets him apart from the rest."

Fiery soul-blues guitarist Damon Fowler was born and raised in Brandon, Florida, just outside of Tampa. He first picked up a guitar at the age of 12, and after being shown a few chords, quickly developed an affinity for the instrument. He also fell in love with the blues, and he was soon gigging regularly in small clubs in the Tampa Bay Area. By now adding hints of R&B, soul, and country to his approach, Fowler learned to play lap steel guitar and Dobro and also added a wicked slide guitar style to his arsenal, while developing a serviceable singing voice along the way, too. He continued to build his fan base and reputation with his impressive shows until he was earning support tours and featured spots on the festival circuits. Along the way he worked with artists like Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter and Edgar Winter, Robin Trower, Gregg Allman, Jimmie Vaughan, Junior Brown, Rick Derringer, Delbert McClinton, and many others. Fowler self-released an album, Riverview Drive, which featured all original material, in 1999, following it with two more self-releases, Roots and Branches in 2000 and the concert set Live at Skipper's Smoke House in 2003, all three of which garnered accolades from blues critics. Signing to Blind Pig Records, he released the swamp blues-tinged Sugar Shack album on the label in 2009, following it with Devil Got His Way two years later in 2011. The impressive Tab Benoit-produced Sounds of Home was next on Blind Pig in 2014. ~ Steve Leggett

Damon Fowler - 2 albums: Sugar Shack / Sounds Of Home

With his hybrid of roots rock, blues, and sacred steel, Florida native Damon Fowler started wowing audiences with his musical exploits as a teenager, building a reputation as one of the hottest young players on the scene. Adding songwriting and vocal skills to his repertoire over the years has brought him many accolades, with critics extolling his originality and maturity as well as his technical guitar expertise. In last year's "Best of Tampa" poll, Creative Loafing magazine named him "Best Guitarist... And Slide Guitarist... and Lap Steel Player... And Dobro Player."

Born and raised in Brandon, Florida, just outside of Tampa, Damon Fowler first picked up the guitar at the age of twelve. After being shown a few chords, it was apparent that he was a natural. While his friends were listening to the musical flavor of the month, Damon was digging into the Blues, and was soon playing small clubs in and around the Tampa Bay area. Years later, with thousands of shows behind him, he is one of the most unique and seasoned artists on the national circuit.

Damon, already a master of the six string, developed a powerful command of the lap-steel, dobro, and slide guitars, and continues to astound audiences at every performance.
