Though sounding completely different from one another, Gov't Mule's Peace...Like a River is a companion album to 2021's Heavy Load Blues. The dates were actually recorded simultaneously in different spaces inside the same studio. In different rooms, the band - guitarist/vocalist Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, bassist Jorgen Carlsson, and keyboardist Danny Louis - and co-producer John Paterno set up two entirely different recording areas with amps, guitars, keys, and microphones, with the intention of giving each album its own sonic and musical identity. While Heavy Load Blues is an epic blues-rock date, Peace...Like a River is a labyrinthine trek through original songs that nod at the band's classic rock influences, creating an album that sounds like it was written and recorded during the 1970s.

Opener "Same as It Ever Was" offers poetic lyrics about life's difficulties and revelations during and in the aftermath of the pandemic. The fingerpicked lead guitar, psychedelic production, lilting melody, and thunderous rhythm section crescendo buoy Haynes' emotionally resonant vocal. "Shake Our Way Out" is an exercise thundering, riff-centric, distorted blues-rock with Billy F. Gibbons (ZZ Top) joining on second guitar and vocals. While "Made My Peace" introduces itself as a midtempo, swaggering blues boogie, it quickly shifts gears to reflect Pink Floyd's deep influence on Gov't Mule. The vocal harmonies, melody, and dynamics recall both the Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here eras. "Dreaming Out Loud" is a jazzy rock cum R&B production.

Ruthie Foster and Ivan Neville join the crew for the souled-out, steamy, bluesy, jazzy, NOLA-inspired funk on the poignant "Dreaming Out Loud" complete with soaring horns. Its lyrics were compiled from writings and speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Robert F. Kennedy, congressman/activist John Lewis and John F. Kennedy. Billy Bob Thornton contributes vocals to the swampy, spooky dubwise reggae of "The River Only Flows One Way." "After the Storm" cooks, but it's just a little too derivative of the L.A. Woman-era Doors due to Haynes trying too hard to imitate Jim Morrison in the first verse. That said, Louis' fine organ work owes more to the exploratory grooves of Larry Young and Garth Hudson than Ray Manzarek. "Just Across the River" is a slow-rolling, R&B-inflected blues featuring excellent playing and singing from New York-based guitarist and vocalist Celisse Henderson (Brandi Carlile, Joni Mitchell).

"Long Time Coming" is a righteous, horn-drenched, soul-blues rave-up with a powerful vocal from Haynes. Peace...Like a River closes with the slide guitar Southern-fried rock of "Gone Too Long," which nods simultaneously at Neil Young with Crazy Horse and Lynyrd Skynyrd. This set reaffirms Gov't Mule's place as one of the most musical and stylistically restless bands of the last three decades. /Thom Jurek, AllMusic

Gov’t Mule — the band led by Warren Haynes — has released a new album, Heavy Load Blues. The band are calling it their first-ever blues album, and it features a mix of Haynes originals and covers originally made famous by the likes of Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James, Junior Wells, Ann Peebles, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Tom Waits and the Animals. Heavy Load Blues will mark the first time the band have dedicated an entire LP to the blues, with Haynes saying an extended exploration of the genre has “been on my list of things to do for years”.

“I didn’t know if it was gonna be a solo album or a Gov’t Mule record,” Haynes said in a statement. “We play some traditional blues on stage from time to time and although it’s usually never more than a few songs per show, our approach to the blues is unique and based on our collective chemistry as a band. “This album gave us a mission,” he continued. “Although in some way it was, ‘Anything goes,’ we wanted to stay true to the spirit of the blues in a traditional sense. It’s not a blues/rock record – it’s a blues record. We wanted it sonically to sound different from a normal Gov’t Mule record.”

Despite being labelled as a studio album, Heavy Load Blues was in fact recorded live at The Power Station New England on analogue tape with the help of numerous vintage guitars and amps to capture a genuine blues tone.

Some bands, like Pearl Jam and Dave Mathews Band for instance, are known for delivering to their fan-base a live recordings of performances. In Gov’t Mule’s case, that strategy of releasing, as much as possible, the recordings (including bootlegs, shows in small venues, etc.) is one of the most pleasant and delightful acts for the Mule’s fans. But, this time, it isn’t just a simple live performance record. It’s from the rawer and notorious era, still as a power-trio with Allen Woody on bass, at the beginnings of the band. As the album’s name makes clear, we’re talking about Mule’s live performance in Georgia, in 1997.

At that time, Gov’t Mule had released only their debut self-titled studio album (Gov’t Mule, 1995) and the first live album (Live At Roseland Ballroom, 1996). So now, 24 years later, anybody can check all the power of a band that became more than a side project of Mule’s members. Live At The Cotton Club has 29 tracks and over than 2h 20 min, and brings either a refresh or reminder to the newer Mule fans, where the cohesiveness and strength of Gov’t Mule’s songs come from. Some tracks, like “Game Face”, “Birth Of Mule” and “Blind Man In The Dark” are present on Mule’s set-list until today, even because those songs had become classics throughout the years.

They had, and still keep, the spirit of a jam band. Beyond that, inspired tributes of their influences were performed at that occasion, like Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen Jam” and The Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”. Cover songs like “Good Morning Little School Girl”, Free’s “Mr. Big” and ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid” also were included, but always with the weight and personality that have made Gov’t Mule one of the greatest jam bands of all time. As expected, the album also brings plenty of classic blues tributes, including vocal solo performances for Blind Willie Johnson’s “John The Revelator” and Elmore James’s “I Can’t Hold Out”. Another pleasure for the listeners is the small slide blues session formed by “Goin’ Out West”, “Gonna Send You Back To Georgia” and “Just Got Paid”.

Jorgen Carlsson, the current bassman, joined the band only in 2004. But he assumed the “incumbency” of remixing and remastering Live At The Cotton Club, even being bullied by his peers that said on Facebook “…the bass might rattle your windows…”. For real, what you’ll find is flawless post-production work, preserving details and bringing the whole energy of the band straight to the front speaker. For instance, a curious detail occurs at the end of the sixth track “Birth Of Mule”, where Haynes warns the crowd that they were playing a couple of “new” songs and they would go to the studio to start the recordings of a “new” album, what later came to be the Mule’s classic Dose. Another unusual fact is that the album wasn’t released for sales (neither physical nor digital) at least so far, being available only on streaming platforms.

Live At The Cotton Club is an important record not only to realize how the band worked as power-trio but also to verify that, with the incorporation of Carlsson and Danny Louis, Gov’t Mule not only kept their roots but aggregated the natural extensions to their unique music. Blues Rock Review already reviewed other live albums, studio albums and selected our Top 10 Songs, but listening to Live At The Cotton Club makes it clear that Gov’t Mule continues to be one of the most important blues rock bands of the present day. ~The Review: 9/10 ~Marcel Innocentini

Jam band powerhouse Gov’t Mule is doing its part to perk up everyone’s quarantine by releasing Live At The Beacon Theatre, the first in a series of streaming-only live albums that intend to make the best of live music’s current situation. The set hit the streaming platforms November 27th, 2020 thanks to Evil Teen Records, LLC and captures the Mule throwing down on New Year’s Eve 2017 at the Beacon Theater in New York City with special guest Jackie Green as part of the band’s yearly residency there. The gig was one of those inspired nights every musician lives for and featured classic Mule tracks alongside covers of songs by Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Sam Cooke, Bob Marley, Neil Young, David Bowie, Steely Dan, and others. It’s a particularly good choice to kick off this series of live efforts and captures many superb musical moments.

“While there’s nothing like being in a room with all of you, we wanted to release a series of live recordings to share some of that live electricity that we all miss so much,” said Gov’t Mule front man and Grammy Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, producer, and guitarist Warren Haynes. Of course, Haynes and the rest of the group want to resume their tradition of ringing in each new year onstage at the Beacon as soon as it’s safe and possible to do so. Live At The Beacon Theatre should, however, help a lot of Mule fans ease the live show withdrawal symptoms that are affecting music lovers everywhere this year until that can happen. The band is in top form, the song choices are cool and uplifting, and the crowd is devouring every note.

From the moment the Mule opens the set with “Larger Than Life” from 2010’s Mulennium, the vibes are deep and the energy level is high. Haynes solos like a man on fire from the jump over a heavy-duty rock groove that the crowd instantly responds to. “The Man I Want To Be” changes things up and lets Haynes get deep into some soulful vocals and gorgeously powerful lead guitar playing. His tone is epic, as always, and band members Matt Abts (drums), Danny Louis (keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals), and Jorgen Carlsson (bass) flex their considerable muscles in response. Gov’t Mule is one of the finest live bands in existence in any genre and the way this bunch locks into each other so intuitively is positively electric. You can practically feel the atmosphere in the room getting charged up.

The Mule’s complete reinvention of Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground” begins with a nod to Johnson’s atmospheric original version from 1927 before morphing into something else entirely. Haynes turns the group into something akin to what Black Sabbath might have been if they came from the American South. Listening to the track is a physically moving experience and shows that GM can rock as hard as anyone. Prepare to be impressed.

Steely Dan’s “Daddy Don’t Live In That New York City No More” brings on another genre shift, this time into a slick, funky, and sophisticated rock sound. The Mule always shows great taste in cover material and they do Becker and Fagen proud with this interpretation. “Revolution” by Dr. John is a driving minor key workout that features Jackie Greene, Shawn Pelton, and The Chronic Horns (Pam Fleming, Jenny Hill, and Sara Jacovino) assisting Haynes and company in sounding even bigger than they normally do. Bob Marley’s “Revolution” also makes an appearance and finds the band locking down on a righteous reggae beat as well as dropping some social commentary. This part of the gig focuses on songs with social and political leanings and includes Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” Gil Scott-Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” Buffalo Springfield’s iconic “For What It’s Worth,” and CCR’s always-relevant “Fortunate Son.” Putting all of these songs together in a single set is a bold political statement in our current social climate and the Mule leaves little doubt as to where its members stand.

The encore is filled with jam band favorites including the Allman Brothers’ “Melissa” and “Mountain Jam,” Neil Young’s anthemic “Rockin’ In The Free World,” and ultimate Jimi Hendrix/Band Of Gypsies’ masterpiece “Machine Gun.” Gov’t Mule elevates to a whole different plane on these tracks and takes every person in attendance along for the ride. Haynes’ guitar work is uniformly spectacular across them all and reaffirms his standing as one of the kings of American rock music. Live At The Beacon Theatre captures one perfect night in the life of an amazing group of musicians and reminds us of what’s waiting for us on the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic. Stay safe for now and bide your time with this outstanding set. ~Mike O’Cull

On September 21, 2000, following the passing of Allen Woody, a founding member of Gov’t Mule and longtime Allman Brothers Band bass player, many of his friends and musical heroes came together to celebrate his life at a historic concert at Roseland Ballroom in New York City. “One For Woody” was a landmark event that lives on as a cherished memory for all those who were in attendance.

On November 22, 2010 at Roseland, “Another One For Woody” will feature sets by The Allman Brothers Band, Gov’t Mule and The North Mississippi Allstars Duo (Luther and Cody Dickinson) along with many special guests who were touched by Allen’s friendship, music and memory. Like the original concert, “Another One For Woody” all net proceeds will go to a cause near to Allen’s heart. This 10th Anniversary event will raise money for musical education in schools.

By the time the world hears the performances from these two shows, Gov’t Mule will have celebrated 25 years as a band, which is something they never could have imagined. It’s no easy task keeping a band together for 25 years. You don’t get to do that without having built, nurtured, depended on, and tested important relationships. In fact, with any band that’s stayed around that long, it’s all about relationships. When the band decided to document where they are currently (musically speaking), it was immediately clear that, amongst other things, this release should be a celebration of those relationships. Available June 28th via Provogue Records, Bring On The Music: Live At The Capitol Theatre is a commemoration curated with the audience experience at the forefront. “Without our audience, there would be no chance or reason for us to be around 25 years later,” says founding member and lead guitarist Warren Haynes. “They’ve stuck with us from the beginning, and this is our way of including them in the celebration of our 25 years together.”

The worst thing one can say about Gov't Mule's Tel-Star Sessions is that you already know what the album sounds like; that's also the very best thing. No matter how many musical paths guitarist Warren Haynes and drummer Matt Abts have traveled since the death of bassist Allen Woody in 2000, these 1994 demo recordings with engineer Bud Snyder at Bradenton, Florida's Tel-Star Studios represent what they single-handedly pulled off in grand style from the very beginning: Reinvigorating the classic blues-rock power trio à la Cream, Mountain, Hot Tuna, ZZ Top, and Taste. Since joining the Allman Brothers Band in 1989, Woody and Haynes had lamented the dearth of the trio form's rawness, creative energy, and a lack of the "rock bass sound" in modern music. Haynes had worked with drummer Abts in Dickey Betts' band through 1988, and they recruited him. Gov't Mule was originally a "project" with no clear goal other than that of exploration. They learned how to interact through covers and originals, and worked up a repertoire to play live. Seven of these demos -- including covers of Free's "Mr. Big" and Memphis Slim's "Mother Earth" -- were re-recorded for the band's self-titled debut. "Blind Man in the Dark" appeared on Dose. Two more covers -- ZZ Top's "Just Got Paid" and Willie Dixon's "The Same Thing" -- are unique to this release. Put together, they showcase a band not only finding its way, but grasping how much remains possible in this stripped-down form.

This set is also a stunning tribute to Woody's genius. When considering the blues-rock bass, one has to consider the innovations made by Jack Bruce. Woody was certainly influenced by him (especially when it came to using jazz), but his phrasing, timing, and groove were his own. He melded melody and rhythm, jazz, blues, rock, and funk in a manner that made his instrument as much a solo vehicle as Hayne's guitar playing. Check the way he stitches them all together on the Dixon tune, adding a nasty funkiness emulated by players ever since. The improvisational balance in the knotty riff on "Left Coast Groovies" pushes Haynes' solo break to find a terrain not already covered by his monstrous, melodic bassline. The turnarounds on Memphis Slim's "Mother Earth" are so massive, filthy, and rock-solid that Abts gets room to syncopate -- on a 12-bar blues! -- while Haynes discovers layers of lyrical depth under the original tune. As a band, this trio could fill every inch of space and not overplay. Check the way psych, rock, and blues entwine on "Blind Man in the Dark," and -- in both versions -- "World of Difference"'s harmony and rhythm are imbued with expansive southern soul and fluid Hendrix-ian psychedelia. Despite the fact that only two of these tunes are "new," the Tel-Star Sessions are among Gov't Mule's most essential recorded documents. The power and musicality on display here rival anything they've released.

Various - Blues 66 (3 parts)

“(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66”, often rendered simply as “Route 66”, is a popular song and rhythm and blues standard, composed in 1946 by American songwriter Bobby Troup. It was first recorded in the same year by Nat King Cole, and was subsequently covered by many artists including Chuck Berry in 1961, The Rolling Stones in 1964, and Depeche Mode in 1987. The song’s lyrics follow the path of the U.S. Route 66 highway, which used to run a long distance across the U.S., going from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California.

But regardless of length and coverage, Route 66 stands alone among American thoroughfares with regard to history and lore. Jazz, blues, folk, R&B and rock n’ roll have all traveled along the nation’s most iconic stretch of blacktop.

Swamp Blues, the looser, more rhythmic variation of the standard Louisiana sound, also brings more contemporary elements of New Orleans, zydeco, soul music, and Cajun to bear on its style. The guitar work is simple but effective, and is heavily influenced by the boogie patterns used on Jimmy Reed records, with liberal doses of Lightnin' Hopkins and Muddy Waters. Unlike the heavy backbeat of the more popular urban styles, its rhythm can be best described as laid-back, making even its most uptempo offerings share the same mood and ambience of the most desultory of slow blues.

Here's Little Milton's superstar album, finding the R&B legend performing duets with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Keb' Mo', Peter Wolf, Dave Alvin, Delbert McClinton, Gov't Mule, G. Love & Special Sauce, and Susan Tedeschi. By far the most interesting track is John Sinclair's recitation of "Mother Earth" preceding the duet between Milton and Tedeschi of it. While this collection of celebrity duets has its moments, one would definitely want to look elsewhere to start a Little Milton collection. ~Cub Koda

GRAMMY winner Warren Haynes of Southern rock quartet Gov't Mule recently visited The Recording Academy's headquarters in Santa Monica, Calif., to participate in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview. Haynes discussed his views on the music industry today, the positive role his family played in his musical upbringing, and Gov't Mule's forthcoming double album, Shout!, and the cast of special guest vocalists featured on the project's second disc, including Elvis Costello, Ben Harper, Dave Matthews, and Grace Potter, among other topics.

"As impressive as the list [of special guests] is … it was more important that we choose the right singer for each song," said Haynes. "Most of them, it was just one choice. [I said,] 'I know who I would like to hear sing this song.'"

Gov't Mule emerged on the music scene with their 1995 eponymous debut album, a collection showcasing the group's fresh psychedelic blues-rock sound. The group has released 15 albums, including studio and live releases. Their most recent studio release, 2009's By A Thread, peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard 200. Gov't Mule earned a GRAMMY nomination in 2002 for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Sco-Mule" featured on The Deep End, Volume 2.

Haynes has released two studio albums as a solo artist, including 2011's GRAMMY-nominated Man In Motion, a collection paying tribute to his blues roots. Haynes has been a mainstay in the Allman Brothers Band for more than two decades. He won his first GRAMMY with the group for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for a live recording of the classic "Jessica." Haynes was honored as a member of the Allman Brothers Band with a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.

Set for release Sept. 24, Shout! features one disc of 11 new songs performed by Gov't Mule and a companion disc featuring an all-star lineup of guest vocalists reinterpreting the same tracks. Special guest vocalists include GRAMMY winners Costello, Dr. John, Harper, Matthews, Toots And The Maytals' Toots Hibbert, and Steve Winwood, and Glenn Hughes, My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Alter Bridge's Myles Kennedy, and Potter, among others.

Gov't Mule's current lineup features Matt Abts (drums), Jorgen Carlsson (bass), Haynes (guitars/vocals), and Danny Louis (keyboards/vocals).
