'Heart Rock & Soul Fire' is the 5th Bacon Fat studio album. For a start it is the first album featuring Tommy McDuff on drums. With his heavy metal background it was obvious the new songs would be a little heavier than the material on the previous 'Band of Brothers' album (2016). On the other hand the new album is what you might expect from Bacon Fat. The diversity in musical genres surrounding the band's solid blues rock sound are even more present than ever. Bacon Fat has always been and always will be compared to ZZ Top, which makes perfectly sense as W. Johnson (vocals/guitar) learned to play the instrument solely by playing along 70ies and 80ies ZZ Top records. 'Heart Rock & Soul Fire' covers a musical spectrum containing elements from heavy rock (Motörhead, Five Horse Johnson,...), stoner rock (Masters of Reality, Kyuss,...), psychedelic rock (Monster Magnet, Hawkwind, Gong,...) and reggae rock (Big Sugar). There's some blues and even 5 seconds of ska somewhere but in the end it sounds just like Bacon Fat! So there's eleven new original tracks here carefully composed to make sure rock 'n roll stays alive. The only non-original on this album is a take on Big Sugar's 'Little Bit a all Right' which fits in perfectly with the other tracks. Guitar and bass are tuned down to 432Hz because it sounds better according to W. Johnson. So if you're tired of hearing the same flat stuff again and again and you're looking for a fresh wave of rock 'n roll gems you should definitely check out this album.

Bacon Fat is a three-piece rock 'n roll band, rooted deeply in the blues and drenched in a hard-rock/funk-soul-reggae/free-jazz sauce. These guys make sure the 60ies and 70ies musical heritage will live on. Whether you bang your head on hard-rock, trip away on psychedelic jazz or melt down for smooth howling bluesy guitars and funky beats, it is all there. The band-name comes from an obscure hit of Andre Williams in 1957 called 'Bacon Fat'. It fits the band in many ways one could say. As with most great performers the best chance for you to feel the vibes from this unique band is to watch Bacon Fat perform live on stage. Having said that you know what to do!

2015 becomes the most important year in Bacon Fat history so far. For the first time in over 10 years the band plays over 20 shows in one year thus making the Digging for Root Tour the most successful one to date, clocking in at 37 gigs. In between the boys recorded the fourth full album "Band of Brothers" which was released in early 2016. Recorded at Noise Factory studio in Namur, this is the first digital recording of the band. Ironically it will also be the first Bacon Fat album to be released on vinyl. And if that wasn't enough the boys produced their first ever video clip under guidance of Pascal Baillien who does the videos for Channel Zero, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Buscemi a.o.

George Smith & Bacon Fat - The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions (2 CD)

For dedicated followers of Post-war blues harp, the mention of George "Harmonica" Smith's name certainly stirs enthusiasm, and rightly so given his influence over a host of modern interpreters, among them Rod Piazza. This solid 2-disc stands up well more than three-and-a-half decades after it was recorded and combines two long-absent titles; Grease One For Me which was listed under the Bacon Fat banner, plus George's own No Time For Jive. Bacon Fat consisted of Buddy Reed and Greg Schaefer on guitars, Jerry Smith's bass, the drumming of a young Richard Innes, and J.D. Nicholson on piano, who wasn't in the lineup for George's effort.

There are a handful of shortcomings here including the less-than-pristine sound we've grown accustomed to in the age of remastering. The original multi-track tapes are long-gone so the studio recordings aren't quite up to snuff in the clarity department. Another miss was producer Mike Vernon's admitted blunder in not combining the talents of Smith and Piazza together as the potent twin-harmonica tandem they were with Bacon Fat behind them. However flawed that opportunity was, it doesn't lessen the importance of this incredibly interesting two-and-a-half hours of blues. Many listeners might not be aware of Piazza's lengthy history but he was undoubtedly strong more than thirty-five years ago and the proof resides here; hefty versions of Little Walter's Up The Line, Off The Wall, Ah'w Baby, Mellow Down Easy, and more prove his mettle while he was still in his early twenties.

Smith was in his middle-forties when these 1970 recordings were tracked and sported a recording history dating back to 1955 so it should come as no surprise that he was in top-shelf form on Someday You're Gonna Learn, Blue Switch, No Time For Jive, Mississippi River Blues, and others. Vernon also admits in retrospect that not using the abilities of guitarist Pee Wee Crayton to better effect on Smith's Good Things was another blunder, but don't pass on this because of the errors - it was still a well-played game. The extra-innings win comes in the form of fifteen previously-unreleased 'live' recordings from a handful of British venues in late 1970 evenly balanced between those featuring Piazza and Smith.

While it does have its small share of warts, don't let a few youth-related managerial mistakes deny the pleasure derived from delving deep into this fine document of a legendary harmonica master and one of his key students. The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions featuring George "Harmonica" Smith & Bacon Fat lands in the 'win' column and that's what counts.

A monumental audio document in the history of the Los Angeles' blues scene. This is during a stage when elder statesman like Smith and J.D. Nicholson taught the nuances of the trade to youngsters Piazza and Richard Innes. For Piazza, it shows him in an embryonic stage in his career, displaying his potential while still learning. ~Char Ham
