Christoffer "Kid" Andersen was born in Norway in 1980. Twenty-one years later he left for the United States to become the most decisive and visionary multi-instrumentalist and producer of blues music in the last two decades. His destination was the West Coast and he debuted playing in Santa Cruz, but shortly after he moved to neighboring San Jose and in one of its suburbs called Los Gatos he founded his own recording studio, Greaseland Studios, which has become, under his intuitive compass, in an active and dynamic factory of the best and most modern contemporary blues. Greaseland will soon reach one hundred and fifty albums recorded in its facilities. As a solo artist, between 2003 and 2007, he has released four worth knowing albums.

Lisa "Little Baby" Leuschner Andersen is a singer, vocal coach, dancer and unconditional fan of Michael Jackson. She made her presence known nationally as a singer on “American Idol” and “Showtime at the Apollo” TV shows, which brought her a record contract and the release of two albums. After marrying Kid, both founded Greaseland Sudios and Lisa became the voice of the label, appearing as vocalist and backing vocalist on more than fifty albums recorded in the studio, in addition to advising many of the artists who come through the studio on singing. Both have formed the perfect team for Greaseland to become the best prepared and most demanded recording studio for labels and blues musicians in the country.

Kid and Lisa Andersen work hard at Greaseland Studios, but they also have a good time together jamming with any of the numerous musicians circulating around the recording studio. Kid is a genius with the buttons and an exceptional musician like few others today, Lisa is a music professional, methodical and demanding, she has an electrifying voice and smiles constantly. Their last two works in Greaseland concern themselves, they have recorded twenty-four songs with the help of a stellar backing band made up of regulars in the studio, drummer D'Mar Martin, bassist Jerry Jemmott, keyboardist Jim Pugh among many other guests. Of those songs, nine have ended up on Kid's album "Spirits" and the rest, a total of thirteen, have gone on to "Soul," Lisa's first solo album recorded in the studio.

Both are an encyclical addressed to fans of the Greaseland sound, supreme production, groundbreaking arrangements and sublime performances, all in songs that border on perfection elevated by Lisa's voice, always at the right point. Little Village Foundation has included both albums in its already vast catalog and has launched jointly, an excellent idea for the listener since they will have an entire indivisible homogeneous work and will be able to enjoy a musical work without pause to be listened to in its entirety.

Ashbolt Stewart has been a professional drummer since 1964! Tommy “Blue Sky” McCoy has released his new CD, Coast to Coast Jump, and it is BMA bound. Green Swamp Records has submitted it to the Blues Music Awards for 2019. This is Tommy’s 9th CD and his best to date. “This is a modern jump blues record,” McCoy notes, “combining traditional elements of West coast jump with my contemporary songwriting, bare-bones production and minimalist combo interplay.”

Recorded at Greaseland Studio in San Jose with Kid Andersen who helped enlist an all-star lineup to record this most relevant album. The end result… a smart, well produced, original jump CD, featuring blues luminaries with performance off the charts. Start with Mitch Woods, piano extraordinaire, who put a touch of class on the ivories, followed with Jimmy Pugh blowin’ up the B3, as does Nancy Wright on the sax and McCoy’s unique guitar style. All 11 cuts are strong recordings, with first-rate performance, showcasing original McCoy compositions, all but one, a cover of Zappa’s iconic “Cosmik Debris” featuring Rick Estrin bringing the characters to life as he recites Frank’s storytelling dialog. “Guava Lava” is another dynamic track, slightly outside the box, bringing a Latin flavor into the mix, featuring sultry vocals by Lisa Andersen. Chuck Berry, the artist, was a genius. We owe just about everything great about rock and roll to Berry (and his pianist/collaborator, Johnnie Johnson). Singer/guitarist Mike Zito pays tribute to the artist on Rock ‘n’ Roll – A Tribute to Chuck Berry.

Berry, the man, was more complicated. He was an African American who perfected a largely white artform. His career stalled due to a Mann Act conviction, which many believe to be a racist statue. People have maintained that after his 20-month jail sentence, Berry came out a changed, meaner person. In the 1980s and 1990s, there were all kinds of allegations against Berry: assaulting women, video cameras in bathrooms, and videotapes of minors. He is both survivor and a perpetrator, easy to sympathize with but hard to root for.

There’s a fantastic scene at the end of Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll, the documentary about the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards efforts to organize a tribute show for Berry. Berry tortures Richards for most of the film, treating Richards more like a court-appointed dentist than as a huge rock star trying to honor Berry’s legacy. At the end of the show, Richards, who has seen some things, looks completely desiccated, totally broken by Berry. Altamont and Hells Angels were one thing. But Berry was next-level pain.

But people like Richards and Zito pay their respect because Berry’s music is just that good. Blasting this album over a weekend, my one-year-old daughter would consistently bop to Zito’s takes on these classic, instantly-recognizable songs. It says something when music resonates that powerfully with a person so young.

Zito says the album originated from his time living in St. Louis, Berry’s hometown, where he got to know Berry’s drummer and son. I suspect Zito also hoped to introduce Berry’s music to younger fans, who might not be familiar with many of these classic songs. Similarly, Zito features an impressive array of guests across the album, using this as an opportunity to promote lower-profile artists (although there are also big names, like Joe Bonamassa and Luther Dickinson, who finds time to appear on what seems to be thousands of albums a year).

There are also some cool surprises. “Downbound Train” is trippier than Berry’s original, featuring guitar right out of Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused.” The guitar comes courtesy of Alex Skolnick, best known for this work with the thrash-metal band Testament (but also an accomplished jazz guitarist). “Rock and Roll Music” is re-imagined with slide guitar and backing vocals from the amazing Joanna Connor. And “Too Much Monkey Business” features a laid-back Dickinson co-vocal that gives the song a different complexion than Berry’s higher-energy original.

Despite the stunning number of guests, Zito is never lost. His vocals and guitar are present on every track, gracefully allowing his collaborators to shine, but also not deferring to anyone. Zito never lets the songs stray too far from the Berry originals, but provides space for different takes on material that is canonically seared into the minds of many. For instance, “Brown Eyed Handsome Man,” one of my all-time favorite Berry tunes, here features singer/guitarists Kirk Fletcher and Josh Smith, but doesn’t deviate too far from Berry’s original. They throw in some slightly flashier guitar licks and put a little mustard on the vocals, but otherwise the performers know better than to mess with perfection.

The perfection of Berry’s music is the challenge of an album like this. Back to the Future, which wasn’t a documentary, features a scene where Michael J. Fox, having traveled back in time to the 1950s, performs Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” at a high school dance, using all of Berry’s moves, both of the guitar and duckwalk variety. Berry’s cousin runs to call him, holding the phone up so Berry can hear the new sound he’s supposedly been looking for. It’s a goofy joke, but there’s a larger message: that Berry’s music is historically significant. The world would be a sadder place without the music of Cream or the Allman Brothers, but would things be that different? Now think about where we would be without Berry. What music wouldn’t have been written without his (and Johnson’s) coming first? Would we have a Beatles or a Stones without him?

And that’s what works about this album. It’s timeless music respectfully presented by talented artists. Zito uses his visibility not just to honor Berry, but to also re-introduce him to a generation (or two) of fans who might not be familiar with his work, which still stands up remarkably well, all those decades later. Adding on to the good deed, Zito also uses this as an opportunity to showcase contemporary artists who might not be as well-known as they should be (and many of whom have been produced by Zito, like the criminally good Albert Castiglia, who performs Berry’s “30 Days”). Great music and great intentions makes for a beautiful tribute. The Review: 9/10 ~Steven Ovadia

Arsen Shomakhov, is a Maple Blues Award-nominated guitarist and singer-songwriter with a Russian background. He is an electrified blues artist who is really committed to roots music. But he also does not shy away from the related musical styles. Arsen had status as a blues-dedicated virtuoso musician in his native Russia and reached the International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis in 2005. He also won the new talent competition at the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, AR in 2007. After his moving to Vancouver, BC in 2008, Arsen formed the Arsen Shomakhov Trio together with bass player Bruce O'Neill and drummer Chip Hart. He is truly an international artist who is now also conquering Europe and the US outside of Canada. Arsen's album "On the Move", released in the US in 2010, reached number two in America and a top ranking in Canada in the airplay charts of Roots Music Report. The release reached the top 25 of "Blues Albums of The Year" worldwide. In the same year, the Toronto Blues Society nominated Arsen for the Maple Blues Awards. Arsen Shomakhov Band went to Memphis to represent the White Rock Blues Society at the IBC in 2014 and 2016, and progressed to the semi-finals. The third album "Dynamic" was released in August 2014. Now there is "Rain City Blues". For this, singer / guitarist Arsen went with drummers Alexander Pettersen (track 1-5) and June Core (track 6-10) to Kid Andersen’s Greaseland Studio in San Jose, CA. The ten original songs diverge like never before. Kid is not only responsible for the production, but is once again becoming a true instrumentalist. The kick-off is given with the handsome blues shuffle "Full-Time Lover". Special guest Aki Kumar immediately comes into the spotlight with his blues harp. "No More" is an exciting piano jump boogie-woogie song and contrasts with the soul-sensitive "Sunset Beach" and the deep groove from "Woman and Whiskey". A quick trip to the West Coast for the swinging "Strolling In San Jose" and then head north for the Chicago blues driven "Rain City Blues". From the funky "Boogaloo!", Which is full of wah wah pedal tricks, the quick goes to the instrumental "Three Arrows" and the jazzy "Sitting On A Fenche". “You know me, I'm Fillmore Slim” has been spoken out loud most everywhere in the city of San Francisco. As Clarence “Fillmore Slim” Sims turned 85 years old in the month of November, 2019, this legendary bluesman continues his music and magic.

Born November 7, 1934 in the rich musical heritage city of New Orleans, Louisiana, “Fillmore” has lived a transformation like no one else. Bestowed upon him are some of the most significant monikers that truly intertwine with a very real American history. “Tailbone”, “Guitar Slim”, “Fillmore Slim”, “the O.G.”. His respect and love for music runs through them all.

He grew up on a farm picking cotton and plowing the fields utilizing a mule. As a youngster he discovered music from his grandmother. He moved to the Los Angeles area in 1955, performing with his band Eddie and the Blues Slayers; he relocated to San Francisco opening shows for the likes of BB King and Dinah Washington; his first single released in the late 50's, was a song entitled 'You Got the Nerve of a Brass Monkey' on the Los Angeles based Dooto record label.

This VIP of the music and underworld would go on to be revered by the members of the hip hop world including Snoop Dogg, 50 cent, Big Daddy Kane and MC Lyte. Among other celebrated musicians, he has toured with Joe Tex, Harmonica Slim and Little Willie John, performed with Sly Stone and T-Bone Walker, and recorded with Joe Louis Walker, Bobbie Webb and Rick Estrin. “Fillmore Slim” continues to master his gift of storytelling as singer/guitarist/songwriter.

Since Charlie Musselwhite planted roots on the West Coast decades ago, San Francisco has evolved into a hotbed of sensational harmonica players, most notably Rick Estrin, Mark Hummel and the late Norton Buffalo. But as most locals already know, there’s a new reed-bender in town, and he’s ready to make a name for himself on a broader scale.

Born in Mumbai, India, and only working as a musician full-time for the past six years or so, Akarsha “Aki” Kumar is the real deal if you love traditional blues harp with an extra dose of originality. As a teen, he studied keyboards and tabla (Indian drums) before picking up a tremolo harmonica, instrument commonly used in popular Hindi music. Now in his mid-30s, Kumar emigrated to the U.S. in 1996 to study software engineering, settling first in Oklahoma City before transferring to San Jose State University, where he earned a degree that landed him a job in the industry.

Aki’s love for the harmonica eventually lead him to the San Jose School of the Blues, where master instructor Dave Barrett quickly turned him onto to the works of Little Walter Jacobs, George “Harmonica” Smith and James Cotton. Kumar burst onto the West Coast scene in 2009, fronting one of the Bay Area’s favorite bands, Tip Of The Top. He now fronts his own tight ensemble and also does service with Little Jonny And The Giants.

Kumar makes his recording debut on this disc, which was co-produced with Chris “Kid” Andersen at Andersen’s award-winning Greaseland Studios. Joining him for the session is lineup that includes four of the best guitarists in the area: Andersen (who also adds keyboards, tabla and sitar), Rusty Zinn, Little Jonny and Johnny “Cat” Soubrand of the Terry Hanck Band. Blues Music Award nominee June Core and Vance Ehlers contribute drums and bass, while Frankie Ramos sits in on saxophone. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, June is a self-taught musician. He got his first paying gig at 17 after only playing for a year. Over the next few years June gigged in and around Cleveland with organist Eddie Baccus and with various funk, jazz and soul groups. In 1978 June was introduced to Robert Lockwood Jr. and Johnny Shines. Eddie Baccus suggested that Robert use June for an upcoming tour. Lockwood reluctantly agreed to hire an unproven drummer and, consequently, the band was fired after the first week because June insisted on playing funk grooves over blues. The club owner recognized talent however, and allowed the band to practice in a broom closet. Robert and Johnny taught June, in one day, five different shuffles to use in any blues. “That was start of my career”, says June. Robert and Johnny Shines became June’s second father’s and June’s musical relationship with Lockwood lasted nearly ten years. In 1980, June moved to New York and played pickups with jazz and funk bands doing the club circuit that included The Bitter End, Lonestar Café, and Freddies Café. In 1982, June returned to Cleveland. As a result of his relationship with Robert Lockwood, June shared the stage with BB King, James Cotton, Mighty Joe Young, Willie Dixon, and Albert Collins.

In 1987 June headed west to San Jose, California. Shortly thereafter, he was hired by Mark Hummel, a stint that lasted two years. He soon met Andy Santana and the West Coast Playboys and then, along with Andy and Mike Schermer, founded the Soul Drivers, a highly successful Santa Cruz based blues band. In 1991, The Soul Drivers became Angela Stehli’s backup band. June also worked as a side man for Miss Laverne Baker. In 1996 June was asked to join Little Charlie and the Nightcats and spent five years touring with that band. Throughout the next few years June played with various west coast based bands such as Terry Hanck and Mighty-Mike Schermer. In 2004 Charlie Musselwhite hired June and has been touring with him since.

“HOWLIN’ AT GREASELAND" is an exciting new tribute CD, showcasing the music and lyrics of the legendary Howlin' Wolf.

This collection of recent recordings of songs originally recorded and performed by Howlin Wolf features many of the best Norhtern California artists working today. Rockin Johnny Burgin, Kid Andersen, Aki Kumar & Rick Estrin are just some of the talent on display here along with Wolf's piano player Henry Gray and Wolf emulator Taildragger. The bands all play with the respect and taste required to cover a Howlin Wolf song.......something rarely attempted and seldom done right.........

Here’s a the story of how this unique recording came to be: THE PLACE:  Guitarist and recording engineer Kid Andersen started Greaseland Music Services in San Jose CA as a humble home studio to record and rehearse with his musician friends.  In the last five years, Greaseland has grown to be a locus of exciting blues activity that is known to blues lovers the world over, with a client list including the best in the business such as Chris Cain, Elvin Bishop and more.  The consistent stream of exciting and notable recordings from Greasleand garnered Kid Andersen a Keeping the Blues Alive Award in 2016 from the Blues Foundation.

THE MUSICIANS:  Over the last few years, a core group of loosely affiliated Bay artists became a sort of blues “wrecking crew” — regular players for sessions which seem to go on practically every week, year-round.  These players have an easy camaraderie that comes from working with each other consistently in various combinations, and many of them are featured on “Howlin'”:  Alabama Mike, Rick Estrin, Terry Hanck, Aki Kumar, Johnny Burgin (Rockin' Johnny), Johnny Cat Soubrand, Vance Ehlers, long-time Robert Cray pianist Jimmy Pugh, John Blues Boyd, D’Mar Martin and many others.   Each of the participants has always been inspired by the gripping voice and haunting music of the Chicago blues legend Howlin’ Wolf.  To collaborate with this group and bring the music and spirit of Howlin’ Wolf back to life and back on disk, producer Stephanie Tice brought in two legendary blues singers, Taildragger and Henry Gray.  These two artists have deep personal and professional connections to Howlin’ Wolf.   Taildragger started singing in the early 70s under Wolf’s strict mentorship, and has since performed much of Wolf’s material in addition to his own.   Henry Gray played piano on many of Wolf’s most famous recordings and at 92, he’s considered a national treasure.

For the cherry on top, Kid kept the recording light on as the musicians  spoke among themselves, informally and between takes, about personal remembrances of Howlin’ Wolf.  These unguarded anecdotes turned out to be precious spoken word histories.  Interspersed through the songs on this CD, they illustrate in a unique way the impact Howlin’ Wolf and his music has had over the decades.

I’m not applauding this CD just because I happen to have the honor of joining Harpdog on a tune…it really is some great smokin’ blues. Every tune is a winner. If you love the blues you won’t go wrong with this wonderful session. I LOVE the killer guitar playing! It’s hard to say what my favorite is but I gotta say I REALLY like Must’ve Been The Devil. I’ve always liked that tune and Harpdog does it great. I love his harp playing on this one especially. Home Is Where The Harp Is has a cool 8-bar blues groove and I love 8-bar blues progression. Fool Like Me, Hayward Boogie, Cloud Full Of Rain, Fine Little Girl, are all fine and For Better or Worse has especially good lyrics. What’s Your Name has some tasty first position harp playing. All in all I think you have a very satisfying album on your hands. I really enjoy listening to it again and again. The tune I did with Harpdog, Moose On The Loose, was a lot of fun. It’s got a good feel and good energy and I remember the fun we had recording it. Give it a listen. I hope hope you can hear the fun like I can. It was recorded the old school way…right off the floor….with fine old tube amps and the works…at Big Jon Atkinson’s studio, Bigtone in Hayward, CA. Jon knows how the blues are supposed to sound and he totally captured that sound with Harpdog and his great band. ~Charlie Musselwhite
